They reflect what they hear from their parents, teachers and everyone else around them. They are too young to dissimulate or be bribed. They don't know tribe or worry about religion. Politics / Goodluck Jonathan’s Ph.d. Thesis Cannot Be Found, Tam David-west Alleges by biodunid: 2:12pm On Feb 05, 2015
Goodluck Jonathan’s Ph.D. thesis cannot be found, Tam David-West alleges

Tamunoemi David-West, a professor and former minister of petroleum and energy, has suggested that President Goodluck Jonathan does not have a doctorate degree from the University of Port Harcourt as widely believed.

Ahead of the February 14 presidential election, one of the popular comparisons of Jonathan with Muhammadu Buhari, the two leading candidates, is that the president possesses a doctorate degree while his opponent does not even have a secondary school leaving certificate. But speaking in Asari Toru, Rivers state, at the governorship campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC), David-West said that all efforts to trace the thesis for which Jonathan was awarded a Ph.D. in Zoology by the University of Port Harcourt, had proved abortive.

David-West urged Rivers people to vote for Dakuku Peterside, saying he had not lied about his academic qualifications. “Dakuku Peterside is God-fearing and without the fear of God, we cannot move forward, both at the state and federal level,” he said. “Another reason is that I have discovered Peterside’s thesis: Corporate Political Strategy, but I have asked and I stand here on my honour, I have asked people to look for the thesis of my brother Jonathan and they have not found it. “I sent another person and said ‘If you have not found the thesis, go and look for the title’. He came back to say, Oga I no see am. “

I am not saying that he lied but I want to see. I have been a professor since 1974. If you say you have Ph.D., the least I want from you is to give me the thesis, which university and where you got it. “My name is Tamuno, which means there is God. If you are lying, there is God o. I advise our brother to look for his shoes and leave. Why am I in love with APC? It is because its members are God-fearing. One of the problems with Nigeria is that there are so many politicians but few statesmen.”

British School Holds Mock Nigerian Pre-Election Presidential Debate

05 Feb 2015

A well-known Roman Catholic independent school for girls in Surrey, London, Woldingham School, has conducted mock elections ahead of this month’s elections.

In a highly spirited and empassioned ‘pre-election’ debate which featured the two dominant Nigerian political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Amarachi Onyebuchi and Siobhan Obi filled in for President Jonathan and Vice-President Namadi Sambo, while Oreoluwa Ogunbiyi and Susannah Peppiatt stood in for General Buhari and his Vice-President candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo respectively.

The issues discussed during the ‘pre-election’ debate ranged widely from corruption to feminism, to the future of Nigeria’s largely oil-based economy, given the global fall in oil prices. Speaking for the PDP, Amarachi and Siobham, focused largely on President Jonathan’s economic achievements during his six years in office, pointing to the fact that the Nigerian economy, in the last year, became the largest in Africa, something the two speakers claimed was linked to the rebasing of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).

The APC representatives, Oreoluwa and Susannah fired back, insisting that the rebasing of the economy could not be attributed solely to the PDP presidency.
Speaking further, the APC spokespersons picked upon Jonathan’s poor record on corruption and also discussed the issue of “the missing N20billion” and the unjust firing of Sanusi Lamido, especially in the light of the fact that the PDP has just gone to visit Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, to appeal for his vote.

Although the pre-debate mood had anticipated the win of the APC, many attendees were impressed by the argument put forward by the PDP, acknowledging that despite Jonathan’s failure to deal with Boko Haram and increasing unemployment, what Nigeria needed the most was continuity.

They also raised concerns about Buhari’s role as a former military head of state who had imprisoned many journalists and activists, in what seemed to be a fight against free speech, and also, the potential significance of his identity as a Muslim in his role as President.

APC’s Susannah and Oreoluwa were no less inspiring, referring to Doyin Okupe’s use of ‘Bring back Jonathan” slogans as being distasteful in the light of the continuing plight of the missing Chibok girls.

Both sides stressed the need to bolster Nigeria’s agricultural sector and diversify the economy by supporting farmers across the country and improving inter-regional competitiveness, to ensure that the Nigerian economy was not left at the mercy of oil.

The representatives of both political parties took questions from the floor, which were answered with diligence, in evidence that both sides had done extensive research into the policies in the respective manifestos of both parties.

After the debates, voting took place in mock elections. When the results were announced the next day at the full school assembly, the APC scored 79.24 per cent of the votes cast and 20.7 per cent went to the PDP.

Woldingham School also plans to hold another debate and mock elections ahead of the May British elections.

'In sum, the group agreed that the President had ‘outperformed’ his predecessors except that it is in reverse order. First, my friend was educated that re-basing the GDP is no achievement: it is a routine statistical exercise, and depending on the base year that you choose, you get a different GDP figure. Re-basing the GDP has nothing to do with government policy.'

'Fourth, poverty incidence and unemployment are also simultaneously at all-time high levels. According to the NBS, poverty incidence grew to 69% in 2010 and projected to be 71% in 2011, with unemployment at 24%. This is the worst record in Nigeria’s history, and the paradox is that this happened during the unprecedented oil boom.'

'Government officials rely on the artificial construct of debt to GDP ratio to tell us we can borrow as much as we want. That is nonsense, especially for an economy with a mono but highly volatile source of revenue and forex earnings. The chicken will soon come home to roost. Today, the combined domestic and external debt of the Federal Government is in excess of $40 billion. Add to this the fact that abandoned capital projects littered all over the country amount to over $50 billion. No word yet on other huge contingent liabilities. '

'What debt relief did for Nigeria was to liberate Nigerian policymakers from the intrusive conditionalities of the creditors and thereby truly allowing Nigeria independence in its public policy. How have we used the independence? Through our own choices, we have yet again tied the hands of future policymakers. This time, the debt is not necessarily to foreign creditor institutions/governments which are organized under the Paris club but largely to private agents which is even more volatile. We call it domestic debt. But if one carefully unpacks the bond portfolio, what percentage of it is held by foreign private agents? And I understand the Government had removed the speed bumps we kept to slow the speed of capital flight, and someone is sweating to explain the gyrations in foreign reserves. I am just smiling!'

'The parallels with the Shagari regime are troubling. First, at the time of oil boom, Nigeria again went on a consumption spree such that the budgets of the last five years can best be described as ‘consumption budgets’, with new borrowing by the federal government exceeding the actual expenditure on critical infrastructure. Second, not one penny was added to the stock of foreign reserves at a period Nigeria earned hundreds of billions from oil. For comparisons, President Obasanjo met about $5 billion in foreign reserves, and the average monthly oil price for the 72 months he was in office was $38, and yet he left $43 billion in foreign reserves after paying $12 billion to write-off Nigeria’s external debt. In the last five years, the average monthly oil price has been over $100, and the quantity also higher but our foreign reserves have been declining and exchange rate depreciating.'

' I remember that Chief Obafemi Awolowo was asked similar questions in 1978 and 1979 about his promises of free education and free medical services. Even as a teenager, I was impressed by how he reeled out figures about the amounts he would save from various ‘waste’ including the tea/coffee served in government offices. The point is that at least he did his homework and had his numbers and I give credit to his team. Some 36 years later, the quality of political debate and discourse seems to border on the pedestrian. From the quality of its team, I did not expect much from the current government, but I must confess that I expected APC as a party aspiring to take over from PDP to come up with a knock-out punch. Evidently, from what we have read from the various versions of its manifesto as well as the depth of promises being made, it does not seem that it has a better offer.'

'Let me admit that the two main parties talk around the major development challenges—corruption, insecurity, economy (unemployment/poverty, power, infrastructure, etc) health, education, etc. However, it is my considered view that none of them has any credible agenda to deal with the issues, especially within the context of the evolving global economy and Nigeria’s broken public finance. 'I note that when I assumed office as Governor of CBN, the stock of foreign reserves was $10 billion. The average monthly oil price during my 60 months in office was $59, but foreign reserve reached the all-time peak of $62 billion (and despite paying $12 billion for external debt, and losing over $15 billion during the unprecedented global financial and economic crisis) I left behind $45 billion. Recall also that our exchange rate continuously appreciated during this period and was at N117 to the dollar before the global crisis and we deliberately allowed it to depreciate in order to preserve our reserves. My calculation is that if the economy was better managed, our foreign reserves should have been between $102 –$118 billion and exchange rate around N112 before the fall in oil prices. As of now, the reserves should be around $90 billion and exchange rate no higher than N125 per dollar.'

In the naija context any job that doesn't allow you to spend the odd N10m on illness, even if it is an abortive effort, hasn't given you freedom yet. How many tithe collecting pastors grin for example do you see launching appeals to fund N10m treatment? Or oil workers?

BTW that is why we say we need change in naija. You and I shouldn't be left playing the lottery of life. The bone marrow transplant treatment he is seeking is available at UBTH but the team has appealed many times for govt support in expanding their facilities so they can offer it to the generality of people at modest cost but na lie. If after years of trading forex, training people and writing extensively about it he can't afford more than the N3m spent so far even with relatives contributing then forex trading isn't worth the hype. Even farming, check the thread on cucumber, should place one in a better financial position to face life's vicissitudes, if practiced at the level this bros took forex trading to.

Again pls note this doesn't mean I don't sympathize with him or poking fun at his condition. Am just pointing out to those seduced by the forex hype that it really isn't the key to financial freedom.

Forex trainer needs N10m for surgery

JANUARY 16, 2015 BY BUKOLA ADEBAYO 0 COMMENTS

For Adekunle Adeyeri, August 17, 2014 shall remain memorable.

It was a day the young forex trader and trainer suddenly fell ill as he was taking his bath in preparation for Sunday service.

The 46-year-old, who narrated his ordeal on his sick bed at the Hamkad Specialist Hospital in Abule Egba, Lagos State, when our correspondent visited him, said since that fateful Sunday, life had never been the same for him.

Adeyeri said, “I was in the bathroom preparing for church service, when everything suddenly became blank. I felt some sensations like electric sparks running through my body. It was as if my system had shut down. I shouted when I felt the jolts. I could not move my left leg and I was unable to stand and I was about to fall when my wife quickly came to my assistance.

“I was rushed to a specialist private hospital where I was revived and later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for further treatment.”

According to doctors, Adeyeri, an Ondo State indigene, is suffering from a life-threatening disease, called multiple myeloma-cancer of the bone marrow.

The bone marrow is the tissue comprising the centre of large bones. It is the place where new red and white blood cells are produced. It is also the tissue inside the hip and thigh.

His medical report also reveals some damage has occurred to his spinal cord. Consequently, Adeyeri has been unable to walk or sit down since the ugly incident last August.

Doctors however said that Adeyeri’s situation was still redeemable. They said he would have to undergo a spinal surgery and a bone marrow transplant that will cost N2m and N8m respectively.

“I had to travel to India for the spine surgery because I was told if I didn’t do it before the transplant I would become paralysed. It cost us almost N3m. I can now move some parts of my body but my doctors insist that I must go back for the bone marrow transplant because the cancer cells are now spreading through my body and eating the spine again.”

The young forex trader, who said he had no money to continue with the surgery, lamented that he had spent all his personal savings.

According to him, even his family members have exhausted their savings while they are trying to manage his ailment.

Before his ordeal, Adeyeri was an award winning forex trader and trainer as well as a newspaper columnist. His business column has been a source of inspiration for up-and-coming forex traders and has boosted many Nigerians’ confidence in forex transactions.

While pleading for assistance, the young man noted that his alma mater, the Federal Government College, Ido-Ani, relatives, friends all contributed to his first surgery.

But for him to undergo the bone marrow transplant, ailing Adeyeri is calling on the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to come to his aid to raise the funds for the bone marrow transplant.

The father of three said, “I have spent all I have and other saved. My family, relatives and friends both home and abroad have given me all they can. In fact, it is their financial assistance that has kept me till today.

“I am pleading with Nigerians to assist me to raise N10m. I am weak and sick. I cannot work or walk. This explains why I am calling on Governor Segun Mimiko, well-meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies. I need your help; I don’t want to die now.”

There is no way you slice or dice it that GEJ can go to bed with both eyes closed when the outlook is this bad. His 'home' regions aren't only the smallest in naija but they also trail Northern regions in PVC collection. Maybe if he had spent the last six years working for naija he would be happy now but he instead counted on tribe and religion to deliver a second term to him. Today with the advent of Mbaka, Osinbajo etc religion has failed and with these PVC numbers tribe can be seen failing big time.

■ ‘Lets rally round and support him’

BY OLAKUNLE OLAFIOYE

Just like in his previous outings, the ghost of Decree 4 of 1984 is haunting General Muhammadu Buhari(rtd), presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as he once again takes another shot at the presidency. The infamous decree which made the duo of Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor of The Guardian newspaper the first victims of military law, has in recent weeks gained currency with political rivals using it as a weapon against the former military head of state.

But Tunde Thompson believes Buhari’s opponents are deliberately confusing and misleading Nigerians . In this interview, he lays bare the issues surrounding their detention as well as unmasked those behind their ordeal. Excerpts:

Did they count the number of days you had spent in detention before you were actually sentenced?

They were not interested in doing that. The sentencing was in July and we were released the following year.

So, how did you feel?

In prison? I wrote a book, Power of the Press, and it’s based on the experience and all the points that were made by the late Chief Rotimi Williams that I could recollect. The arguments of the prosecution and defense counsels were presented from my point of view and the analysis of the ethical issues involved and the publication of the statement I made and questions they asked me. I had to respond to an article that claimed some journalists asked for something but when they were not given they started making accusations against some leaders claiming that they didn’t keep their promises. I had to respond to that article about two years ago in The Sun on the comment by General Buhari, because I believed he was misled into thinking that those of us, The Guardian staff, who were involved in the Decree 4 matter wanted something from the government but because we were not obliged, we decided to write stories. That is not possible.

I responded that the journalists involved didn’t do that kind of thing; they were not thinking about material promises made by anybody. As a matter of fact, nobody made such promises. What happened was that stories were written and sources were demanded and were denied because it was not ethical. But when you look at it now, this is 2015, about 31 years later, I have also reflected on the matter especially when I wanted to do that rejoinder to the comment made by General Buhari that some journalists made some demands, that the demands were not honored and they started blackmailing them.

I have seen that time is a healer of certain wounds because people are still asking that the man who jailed you wants to become the president that what do I feel about it? They asked if I would vote for such a man. I want to say categorically that Buhari as the head of state at the time, didn’t order the detention of Mr. Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor.

He never did. Even Idiagbon did not. It was the head of NSO that ordered our arrest. That was the file my colleague saw when he was brought in to see Rafindadi after I had briefed him. And that was an order that they complied with. Buhari was not responsible for our arrest, so I do not see why at this time, people are trying to make political capital out of what happened in 1984. Apart from that, it was an issue in 2011 election. Between 2010 and 2011 people kept saying this over and over again. I think it’s now over 30 years, people should learn to be charitable; they should learn to forgive and let bygones be bygones especially when we know the truth about who did what. I will like to say that Buhari didn’t order my arrest, so I bear no grudge against him.

Are you saying if there was any hurt he’s been forgiven?

Left to me, the hurt was inadvertent; it was aimed at protecting the government. I know it was not for journalists alone, there were other professional groups other than journalists that the decree was targeted at. I am very happy that we faced the bullet and the bullet was deadened at our end. The press and the government are rivals in the search for information. They are also rivals in secrecy matters. The government wants to keep its secrets secret and we want to make the secrets open because we want to inform our audience. That’s why we always quarrel and that’s why I believe the government and the media need more fora to understand themselves. There are hostilities because we don’t understand ourselves.

Are you saying you wish General Buhari well as he aspires to rule Nigeria?

Yes, as far I am concerned now and considering the fact that there is an order that the Minister of Petroleum should not appear before the National Assembly to defend her conduct and considering the fact that the Naira had been further devalued. Now listen, in Ghana the Cedi we used to mock, the Rupee we used mock and the Yen. The Naira is just not there again. We say revalue the Naira but they said they cannot because we only have one commodity. The government has been saying a lot about agriculture. Cocoa provided the mainstay of the defunct western region under Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Groundnuts provided the mainstay of the defunct northern economy under Sir Ahmadu Bello. Have our farmlands suddenly become infertile? We have solid minerals; we have gold in Ilesa. What I am trying to say is that if we look critically, we have other commodities and if they are harnessed we will be able to say we have more than oil. I appreciate what the Minister of Agriculture, Akinwunmi Adesina is doing now. Rice is being produced on massive scale but the problem is mechanization. They are trying to see if we can grow wheat here. I believe enough efforts have not been made to find alternative income-generating activities.

Some even seem to be too powerful. They are sacred cows and they cannot be tamed. Is that not dangerous? I believe that a person like Buhari at this time can call anybody to order and some people are afraid of that.

The fear of a few people who have plundered the treasuries of this country should not be allowed to hinder our economic progress and political transformation.
I think Buhari is humble. How many times did Abraham Lincoln run for presidency of United States? Was it not about 11 times? But Buhari is running for about three, four times and people are saying he is too old. He is not too old. Let them go to India, let them go to other places there are examples. I will not like people to use Decree 4 as an excuse to deny somebody, who can help bring discipline through democratic means, to Nigeria, another opportunity of getting to the position of president of this country. I think God is getting tired of the injustice in this country.

That is why some of us are seeing the reason to rally round the man and support him.
The Sun is not a newspaper for any candidate, it is a national newspaper. I am very happy that you raised the issue about what my position is on somebody who put me in jail. I think 30 years is long enough, we should forgive and forget and let there be progress. Those who are ready to continue confusing issues out of their ignorance should be pushed aside and let us do what our conscience dictates. Except we want to suffer for another four or eight years, it will be costly to make a wrong decision again.
