Role of Russia in the Biafran War
.1- Russian interest early in the war was to support Biafra. They sent an emissary, who appear in Enugu like a mystery, but Ojukwu refused to give him audience believing doing so will pit the British against him. The emissary came to propose moving Russian naval assets into Lagos and PH waters to prevent British interference. We would have won the war but would also have be a communist country.

2. Yes, Ojukwu was correct in his assessment of British fears, how ever his failure is that he did not realise how badly Britain wanted Niger delta oil and were already pitted against him. The now declassified intelligence files from UK shows they had only two reasons for the war, 1. Recouping 220 million pounds they invested in the infant niger delta oil, 2. Fear of Russian entry into west Africa, which they believed will rob them of their control of agricultural products mainly from Northern Nigeria. (Probably same Reason Yaradua was extinguished, as he was making deals with Gazprom and planning to move oil licences to China)
Both reason are just how to loot resources.

Since the 1800s the various British visitors were not just explorers but scholars profiling each African group. They already did not believe they could control or loot the Niger Delta oil from Igbos.


3. With Ojukwu's gaffe or miscalculation (he thought Britain was honourable and would do the right thing eventually, same way we see America today), Britain took the opportunity to show Russia the Ogbunigwes developed by Biafra, convincing them we can do more harm and become a future military power, and reached a deal with Russia not to back biafra. Having been rejected already by Biafra, Russia simply agreed.

4. The massive British supply of arms to Gowon even when they were documenting the ineffectiveness and poor performance of the Nigerian army, was simply because Gowon was trying to buy arms from Russia, and the wanted to keep Russia away from their food. This is also well documented in the UK declassified intelligence files.

There is no reason why Biafrans should not move towards Russia, they might be underdogs, but are big underdog that is undefeated. More importantly, the Russian man talks straight, no British diplomacy viz a viz deception and lies like forcing Kenya to arrest MNK and pretending they do not know anything about it.

The answer to your question is that the map of the nations formerly held together against their will by the West in Black Africa will be redrawn according to cultural/linguistical affinity not for the economic benefits of the west as usual.
