All the gurus in the house, all these una RSI, OBV, STOCHASTIC INDICATORS and other furmula's just dey give me headache, I chanced on this article on the net sometime ago, and I felt I should share it with the house, you can confirm that this study actually took place in the mentioned university.

And my two cents advice is this, if you can't understand all these big big big grammer, you can still do well on the NSE with patience and simple tools like the PE ratio, a companies historical perfomance down the years and the number of shaareholders they have. The NSE is maturing, but E never mature reach all these statistical abracadabra. If yuo wait to learn all, you will probably never put your money into stocks

The gurus, make una no kill me o, but thats my opinion

cheers

How Equities Markets Work

In a recent university experiment, three people were given a chance to show their stock picking expertise. They were:

A professional stock analyst
An astrologer
A five-year-old girl (right)

The experiment, devised by Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire in England, set up three imaginary portfolios, each with stakes of £5,000. The participants chose their stocks, a year went by, and the picks were compared.

The professional stock analyst used all his expertise and computer power to make his choices. The man on the street would choose this person if he wanted his money to grow.

The astrologer used the position of the planets to guide her choices. Common sense says this shouldn't work very well, compared to a roomful of computers.

The five-year-old girl just made random picks. She could be expected to perform about as well as the average, untutored investor relying on instinct.

The results?

The professional analyst's picks went down 46.2%.
The astrologer's portfolio went down 6.2%.
The five-year-old girl came out ahead, with a growth of 5.8%.

How is this possible? Isn't stock picking a science? Can't professional portfolio managers perform better than ordinary, uneducated people? Is our trust in stockbrokers misplaced?

Well, contrary to what you may have been told, fair, open stock markets are not predictable — not by anyone. Not in principle, not in fact.

If this were not true, if stock markets could be predicted, those markets would be neither fair nor open. In fact, the unpredictability of stock markets is proof of their overall fairness.

Hold on a minute. Did you hear me right? Yes, I'll say it again, for emphasis:

The unpredictability of stock markets is proof of their overall fairness.

Why is this true? Why are markets unpredictable by definition? Why can't there be a consistent "winning system," a "sure-fire stock picking strategy," as is so often claimed in articles and books?

Well, there are many reasons. Here are two:
If someone came up with a stock-picking strategy that worked for a time, someone else would surely notice the strategy. That person wouldn't be able to resist telling his relatives, then the stocks targeted by the strategy would go up in price (because of increased demand), thus wiping out the strategy's advantage.

The market is not a bunch of stocks sitting in a warehouse. It is a living organism — people, companies, all competing with each other to maximize their gain. These people are not acting in any predictable way, because predictable people, predictable actions, invariably result in loss. This is true because someone, somewhere inevitably anticipates, and acts on, any predictable behavior. Just like in nature.

There is only one method to gain a real advantage in the stock market, and that method is illegal: insider information. Example? At the same time top Enron executives were telling the public the company was doing fine, they were liquidating their own portfolios. That is how insider trading works — the trader knows something the general public doesn't. And that is why it is illegal.

Here is a very important secret of the stockbroker's trade, a secret stockbrokers pray you don't find out — there is no legal stock picking strategy that can outperform the average, long-term market. This is true logically, scientifically, and it is proven by history.

Why don't the professionals want you to find this out? Because their existence depends on your ignorance — if you found out this dirty secret, you would fire your broker, pick a broad, varied portfolio of stocks, and sit on them. This strategy is called "buy and hold," and it is the approach recommended by most market commentators who are willing to tell the truth.

In many studies performed over decades, the "buy and hold" strategy, as boring as it sounds, is proven to outperform all other (legal) strategies. And there is no reason a "buy and hold" portfolio should perform better than a portfolio overseen by a professional manager, except for two crucial facts:
The expense of brokerage fees.
The risk that the manager will gamble with your money by putting too much of it into too small a market segment, and lose that gamble.

Given that regularly buying and selling stocks is a bad strategy, you may wonder how people make any money in the stock market at all. Well, the reason is simple — the average market increases in value over time. This means if you bought a wide, diverse portfolio and waited twenty years, chances are your portfolio would have increased about as much as a typical market indicator like the Dow-Jones average (a portfolio of typical stocks used to measure market performance).

Which leads to this description of the two primary kinds of investment (and investor):

"Buy and hold" portfolio:
Steady, predictable performance.
Maximum gain in the long term.
Managed portfolio:
Occasionally very exciting.
Wild swings in value compared to the average market.
Added cost of brokerage fees.
Less long-term gain than buy and hold.

A very big thank you to all the ogas in this house, who have done better than my yeye stockbroker, God will bless all of you.

Please can anyone give me any info on Nestle? Whats the outlook for them, am sure there won't be any bonuses this year but any chance of good capital appreciation in the next 6 to 8 months?

After the scandal at Cadbury, it looks attractive at below 35, but is there really anything to work on with this firm? Looks juicy to me at below 35, but it's all based on their pedigree before the scandal, any good thing in the offing for this one?

What's this story about berger paints and CAPL merging, if it is true, will it make berger a good buy at below 8 naira? If it is not, should I still buy berger at below 8 naira.

Whats the likely best price NGC can do in the next 6 to 8 months?

Thanks to you all in advance

Autos / Has Your Car Ever Been Stolen?/security Tips by blablabla(m): 12:17pm On Sep 01, 2007
Last Sunday my car was stolen at church, relatively new car (2 months, very clean) car was parked outside the church premises in Yaba and I went in to church, came out later and the car was gone. Gone. Reported to the police at Sabo police station, but no news from them yet.

Started this topic so the house can help offer tips on how to secure your car anywhere, not only in Lagos. I have a few.

Install a security system as soon as the car becomes your own if it did not have one before.

Buy a good pedal or steering lock.

Never leave your original documents in the car

Always come out every now and again to make sure your car is where you left it.

I may sound paranoid, but you would too, if you just lost a car.
Computers / How Starcomms Internet Service Dupes Subscribers by blablabla(m): 5:50pm On Jun 28, 2007
Saw this in the papers recently, I think Nigerians should learn how to say no to corporate stealing like the one below. Does anyone have a similar experience?

Dear Editor,

Thank you so very much for providing hapless Nigerians an opportunity like this to air their views on the situation in the country and the world at large, without such a vibrant and authoritative medium a lot of corporate cheating and injustice would never see the light of day in this country. My Encarta dictionary defines fraudulent as "designed to deceive, not honest, true or fair, and intended to deceive people". Yes, fraudulent that is the summary of Starcomms Internet service in Lagos.

I have used Starcomms 24 hour Internet service for the last 9 months and it has been a horrible experience, I have not bothered to change them because my friends on other networks have the same sorry tales to tell. As soon as you go on line with the Starcomms air card, a message pops up saying 'STARCOMMS IS NOW CONNECTED, SPEED 115.2 KBPS' (I beleive kilobytes per second), with this speed you can do most of the things you want online except maybe download audio or video files promptly. Unfortunately, the air card can actually be checked for the real speed it is doing, simply divide the time shown by the number of bytes downloaded for the given time and you get the actual speed of download. For the nine months I have used Starcomms, they have never done more than 5 to 10 kilobytes per second, even when browsing right under their mast. The problem can't be with my laptop because I have used the same system in the UK and the USA with both broadband wireless and dial up connections and the speeds are usually awesome. I challenge Starcomms to prove me wrong, by going on live television to actually show that they have speeds anywhere close to 115.2 kbps. It takes over 20 minutes to open an Internet page with Starcomms air card.

The problem with Starcomms is that of greed and disregard for installed network capacity, they have been aggressively marketing and expanding their subscriber base without a corresponding increase in network capacity, again, I challenge Starcomms management to go on air and prove me wrong on this point. Am also sending a copy of this letter to the toothless telecommunications industry watch dog, I don't know why everybody has been praising them.

Somebody should please call Starcomms to order, they should stop making spurious and fraudulent claims, I wish it was possible to sue them and collect all the money they have been collecting from me without any service.

Nigerians must learn how to complain, not only about inept governments but also about corporate thieves who make fraudulent claims and behave as if they are doing customers a favour by been in the market. It is also worthy of note that the same Starcomms has the most lousy, in fact near non existent customer care center amongst the PTO's. My only prayer is that the market be deepened to accommodate more players who will provide competition and force corporate dupes like Starcomms off the face of the earth.

Crime / Inec Amends Anambra Results, Uba Still Wins/rigging Extraordinary by blablabla(m): 2:15pm On Apr 17, 2007
CAN ANYONE HELP ME EXPLAIN THIS PLEASE

INEC amends Anambra results, Uba still wins
From Uzoma Nzeagwa, Awka
TWO results were yesterday presented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Anambra State governorship election. The separate results however gave the victory to Dr. Andy Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The development came as the opposition parties in the state called for a fresh election. They said people did not vote during the exercise.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Nasiri Ayilara, had earlier said that Uba polled 1,930,004 votes to beat the deputy governor and APGA's Dame Virgy Etiaba to the second position with 71,296 votes while Njideka Anyadike of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 14,506 votes.

According to him, 1,987,197 voters were registered in the state. He said that his commission achieved over 95 per cent success in the election. With the result, the total number of people that voted in the polls was 2,015,806, which is higher than the registered voters by 128,609.

Later yesterdeay evening, INEC put the total vote cast at 1,207,557 while 39,942 were declared void. The new result gave Uba 1,093,004 votes, the score by Etibia remained at 71,296 and ADC retained 14,506 votes. Another party, the APS polled 13,959 votes.

Others are DPP, 13,133, CP (9,192), NDP (8,060), PMP (6,688), CPP (1,951), PPA (8,058) and CDC (1,697).

He also declared that 28 of the 30 constituencies in the House of Assembly were won by the PDP. Ayilara explained that Nnewi-North and Nnewi-South local councils' polls were cancelled due to what he called electoral irregularities.

But a coalition of political parties and eminent citizens of the state have declared that there was no election in Anambra. They have, therefore, called on INEC to fix a new date for another election in the state.

The parties and their governorship candidates that rejected the results are Dr. Chris Ngige (AC), Nicholas Ukachukwu (ANPP), Etiaba (APGA), Dr. Alex Obiogbolu (APS), Mrs. Njideka Anyadike (ADC) and Ossy Ezenwa (DPP). They vowed not to accept any result announced by INEC on the basis of the last polls.

i love my nigeria, something new, usually bad, every other day,
just when an adhoc committee sitting on one breaking news is about to submit it's report, something entirely new happens.

soon a new panel of enquiry, soon life returns to normal for most of us but not the affected ones, soon the victims will become villains as they are arrested for trying to survive this nigeria,

where is frank, my frank information maestro, who will listen to him now? the international newswires are awash with this story, what will he say, who will he blame now? ATIKU?

where is soludo, the foreign reserve guru? rumour has it this fuel scarcity started because the FG was owing the oil majors 18billion naira (140 million dollars), now the if game will start, if, if, if only they had paid, how much is a nigerian life worth?

do the maths, 10 liters of fuel = 2500 naira today(black market price)  10 liters of fuel = 650 naira two weeks ago(fuel pump price). a man retrenched from the nitel, npa or any other gov agency without gratuity calculates how much  food he can provide his family by scooping  only 100 liters (25 000 naira), what would you di if you were in his shoes? life is risk, no risk no success or what the hell!!!!!

finally, check out this term>>TACHYPHYLAXIS, medical term which describes a gradual attenuation of the effects produced by a drug following repeated exposures to that drug, compare that term to the nigerian situation now, my warri people will say, WE DON SEE SOTEY NOTHING FIT SHAKE US AGAIN, God bless and deliver us from us.

All these is scary,
Don't know who Joshua Dariye is personally,
Don't care what bloody crimes he committed,
He is a governor, there are laid down rules on how to impeach a governor in our constitution,
These rules have been completely bastardised, no impeachment has been done the right way so far,
two wrongs don't make a right,
dariye was impeached by ONLY 7 legislators, assisted by federal might,
what all this does is to create a state where the constitution is trampled at will and where the laid down laws are continually bypassed, ANARCHY, ANARCHY ANARCHY is the final endpoint, what goes around comes around, may the good Lord deliver us

CHOICES

the best thing in life is the ability to make a choice, and it is absolutely free.

choices, what would life be without the freedom to make a choice?

"Life's not about expecting, hoping and wishing,
it's about doing, being and becoming.

It's about the choices
you've just made,
and the ones you're about to make,
it's about the things you choose to say - today.

It's about what you're going to do after you finish reading this."

The things I have witnessed

The management of many sickler women during ante natal care up to their delivery, it was not an easy affair for the woman, her husband, her doctor(me), the nurses and everybody who had something to do with her.

I lost the most brilliant guy in my class (a sickler) in final year to complications of a rare disease that afflicts only sicklers.

I have been unfortunate to be the one to console several mothers when a sickler child dies after several years of nuturing and sleeping in uncomfortable hospital beds and making so many sacrifices, but then the child dies,

The most painful, a young girl almost killed herself because her only brother, a sickler, hale and hearty in the morning, both boarded a bus in the morning to BENIN from lagos, the young man took ill on the way and by the time they where in benin he was gone, wetin i go tell my mama? the girl kept on wailing.

bottomline, love is just an emotion,
like a tree, if you water it, it grows and becomes a very big, if you starve it, it dies a natural death.

So, flee from misery, break this engagement.

On the other hand;

you can adopt children when you are married,
or
you can do genetic testing in the first trimester, if it's a sickler you terminate, if not you carry on to term, what if the first 4 pregnancies are sicklers?

flee from misery

the okada man is a neccessary evil,
it would take at least 10 years of high grade urban planning and provision of massive employment opportunities to take the okada man out of our streets.

Who's afraid of Okada?

By Reuben Abati

THE decision of the Lagos State Government to ban the movement of commercial motorcycles during a specified period of 7pm-6am would on the surface of it, seem a genuine expression of concern about the emergence of the okada, as the motorcycles are better known, as a major tool and icon in reported cases of armed robbery in the state. But a close examination, compels a sociological investigation of the place, and circumstances of the okada in our lives, and whether indeed, the state government's directive is sustainable, and not one of those episodic, knee-jerk responses that are at variance with reality.
