Hi btw is the AUS sun hotter/burns more than the Nigerian sun?

Very few people in Nigerian use sunscreen so wondering why people living in AUS have to use sunscreen.
Copied from google search

Australia experiences high rates of sunburn due to its geography, which places it closer to the equator, and atmospheric conditions, such as clear skies and low humidity, that allow more intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the ground. Additionally, the Earth's elliptical orbit means the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, is closer to the sun in January during their summer months.

Geographical and orbital factors
Proximity to the equator: Australia's location near the equator means the sun is more directly overhead, and its rays travel a shorter distance through the atmosphere.

Earth's orbit:
The Earth's elliptical orbit brings the Southern Hemisphere, and Australia, closer to the sun during its summer (around January) compared to the Northern Hemisphere's summer.
Atmospheric and environmental factors

Clear skies:
Australia's climate often features clear, blue skies and low humidity, which means there are fewer clouds and less moisture to filter the sun's UV rays.

Reflective surfaces:
Surfaces like water, sand, and even light-colored pavements can reflect UV radiation, increasing overall exposure.

Ozone layer:
While not the primary cause, the thinning of the ozone layer over Antarctica has contributed to higher UV levels reaching the Southern Hemisphere, although global efforts are leading to a slow recovery.

Thank you I will send an email also should include a picture of myself in the presentation.

You can’t go into a meeting with a professor with mere words. It wont fly, he won't even get your points. You would fail miserably to impress.

So, I will advise to make a presentation with at most 3 slides.
Share slides with Professor 1-2 hours before re-schedule zoom meeting.

Slide 1 Introduction
Add your picture
Name: Musa Chima Segun
Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Comp Sic form University of bla bla Nigeria.
Language spoken: English fluently, Japanese: zero
Work Experience: CEO and Front-End Engineer with Shell and Chevron
Vast experience in Java, Pascal programming language, Robotics etc

You get the gist.

Slide 2 Your research intention in master’s Program
With my knowledge in a pascal, I want to write a program to fly an unmanned car to the sun and back.
Hint: Add image of car flying to the sun.

Slide 3 Your future after master’s program
I want to continue to phd, so that I can invest more in my master’s research and program the car to fly to the sun and into heaven to and come back to earth safely. I would also like to do a post-doc program in Japan.
Hint: Add image of car flying to the sun and into heaven.

OR.

I want to us my knowledge from my master research to work in Japanese company like JAXA (Japan equivalent to NASA) bla bla etc.

You get the gist. So that Prof can understand you clearly and know how to help you. So, during your zooming meeting you would be sharing your slide presentation.

Keep your slides brief, no write plenty English, straight to the point and let illustrations, images speak more for you in the slides.

Hello Everyone,

I have a question please. I have secured a supervisor for a phd program and he told me to prepare my application documents. One of the documents listed is the oral presentation outline. I want to clarify does that mean the power point itself or just table of content.
to be safe i would assume presentation itself.
But best to clarify by email.
Anyways, during your research you would be doing almost weekly peer review presentations.

I studied dental technology, but I have 3+ years of experience as a software engineer. What are my chances?
1. Chances of a Software engineer, not so good now, as this is over saturated.
2. Chances in the dental profession, good i reckon. So why not try to use a dental tech profile for your submission with your zero-work experience?

No one knows.

If you want a trend , you can check for the history of past invites for both professions.

However, the higher your points , the better your chances.
So aim for above 100 points.

Congratulations, Tenza!
Tenza, abeg, the bolded part of your post really resonated with me. I need proper orientation and guidance on how to job hunt for web development roles in a foreign country. I’m spreading my tentacles because I genuinely want to work hard and build wealth. I’m already in my 30s, so I’m very intentional about this journey.

From the very first week I arrived in this country, I’ve been actively job hunting for web development roles. Along the way, I’ve had my fair share of rejections and “sorry” emails. Most advertised positions explicitly require fluent or business-level Japanese.
However, I did manage to secure an interview with a recruiter, and I could tell he was genuinely impressed with my skills—especially during the interview, where I really sold myself. He later sent me the job description and asked for my updated resume to forward.
To the experienced seniors already here in Japan—Gerrard59, blackbriar, and Judecares1—happy holidays! I have two quick questions:
Q1: It’s been over a week since I forwarded my resume, which the recruiter acknowledged receiving. Do you think it would be a good idea to follow up?

[A1]
Be patient with the Japanese, do not rush them, if you try to, they will lose interest quickly.
So, keep your options as numerous as possible.
Do you have a LinkedIn profile open to recruiters in Japan?

Q2: Apart from learning Japanese, what other advice would you give me as I continue sending out applications?
[A2]
Besides learning Japanese. the other advice is learn JAPANESE. even if it is street Japanese. MOST IMPORTANT
Also do more networking by engaging in your hobbies (Soccer, tennis etc ) or learn a new hobby and be apssionate about it.
the friends you meet here, discuss your job hunting issues with them, they may have some help or advice.

Second advice is have a plan, Japan salaries are crap.
Do you want to stay in Japan forever or for a long time?
If not , what are your plans to migrate somewhere else say like canada, USA or australia?

My humbe 2 cents as always.

Okay, thanks bro….. I’ll look out for the school and give you feedback
Why not just try vocational schools?
Mechanic, heavy vehicle operator, fashion designer etc and also learn Japanese at the same time for free.
This is what Cameroonians and kiwis do.

We have said it several times, the easiest way is through school.

Thanks Judecares1! I actually already made a katakana hanko on Thursday and also visited the City Hall to register my address.

Oga blackbriar, hope you are good? It's been a while.

Modified: I am just got my Japanese SIM card now. I used my Nigerian ATM(MasterCard).
Congratulations and welcome to Japan.

Transportation Saving Tips
1. Get a bicyle from a used shop for like 1 -2k yen, registered and get insurance for like 500 yen.
2. Usually schools sell discount public bus tickets, try to find out about this.

Phone saving tips
Be very very careful with this one. it can get really expensive fast.
I have seen students get into big debts of 20,000 yen monthly for phone and internet.
I dont think anyone uses their phone (sim i mean) but most of apps (LINE) and Whatsapp.
if you have wifi at dorm and at school, do you need a sim for now?

Credit card
I think you can get a rakuten credit card. but be careful again.
you will need a japanese student colleague to help you apply for this one, so that your sign up for a wrong option.

Food
1. See that "SAIZERIYA"; life saving restaurant!!!!!!!!!
however, if you cook, it is way way cheaper and healthier.
No foolow japese student dey eat cup noodles and ocha everyday abeg.
You will enjoy japan for its convenience with shopping.
keep a budget sheet for now to track expenses.

Winter Shopping
Winter is coming soonest.
Start planning for winter shopping.
Just go to UNIQLO. Must get are
1. Heat tech ( long johns and Vest)
2. Warn slipplers/mufflers for feet.
3. A good warm jacket. [You can check used store fo rgood cheap jackets, as brand new one would cost around 10,000 yen]
4. And if the snow are thick like in niigata and aomori, a very very good winter boot.

Nihongo
Please, sign up for and attend dedicatedly the free basic japanese languge classes that the univeristy offers.

And most importantly, have fun.
if you play any sport, get into it again.
I know a guy, who got a Job becuase the people he associated with all do taekwando, currently posted to USA branch of a global japnese comapny. that is networking.
Enjoy yourself and explore.

My humble 2 cents.

I have ND in metallurgical engineering ( I started working after this as a maintenance technician), I also have HND in mechanical engineering. I want to assess with TRA for Fitter general ( I have a trade test certificate). My concern is should I use only the ND or both the ND and HND. I can easily get the 5 years working experience with only the ND, the HND will only give me 2 years working experience since the work experience counts only after graduation.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm self employed and have been doing contract jobs for year.

The assessor demanded for letters from the clients and forwarded the PROJECT COMPLETION LETTERS from various clients and it details project cost and amount paid, duration of the works done and this is inline with what's obtainable in my bank statements.

I thought this will cover it.

They said I didn't forward reference letters from clients and because of this, no period of employed will be given to me.

How do you give someone Level 1 skill and professional engineer outcome without awarding any experience?

It baffle me
Sure, it could be baffling.

Engineers Australia evaluates you on 2 things:
1. Your eligiblty to referred to as a Professional Engineer.
2. Your Relevant work experience as a Professional Engineer.

It seems you have gotten item 1.) but did not get item 2.) due to lack of documentation.

This will not affect your job hunting in Australia.
This will only affect your points and hence the ability for you to get invited quickly to apply for the visa.

My humble advice, get the documents Engineers Australia is requestign for and re-submit for relevant working expreience evaluation and recognition.

I have already started my skill assessment with vetasses. Civil Engineering degree is actually considered as one of the most relevant and closely related degree required for construction project management skill assessment with vetasses.

I think I have a better chance with construction project management and it also closely aligns with my experience. I was just worried if I could change skill assessment after lodging an expression of interest. Note: I didn’t assess my previous civil engineering experience, I only did skill assessment for degree with Engineers Australia
Yes Sir.

You can change your skilled career as much as you want to which ever you believe that you are more qualified in.

It is all about the Benjamins.

If you have the funds, go for it.

Hi everyone, please is it possible to switch your occupation on an already submitted expression of interest? I submitted my expression of interest as a civil engineer but I am looking to change to construction project manager. As you know, civil engineering role are very similar with that of construction project manager. I have a civil engineering degree but only assessed my degree without experience with Engineers Australia.

I have prior experience and a construction company which I currently run, I believe I will be better positioned with a construction project management. And besides, most of my role are tailored more to that of a construction project manager.
1. Do you have an assessment from any of Immigrations authorized professional body for Construction Project manager?
2. If you want to assess your degree for Construction Project manager, best to check with VETASSESS and pay the fee as required.
3. If you have close to, and more than 90 points on Civil engineering, why bother? the last invitation round was 90 points for Civil Engineer.

My humble 2 cents.

I have transited using Beijing airport and Singapore airports using my Naija passport without issues. You can get 24hrs visa upon arrival 😀 in china if you wish to see the beauty of china while i await my connecting flight to Nagoya or you can stay at the airport if you don't feel like going out of the airport. But in Singapore i stayed at the airport. As long as you don't want to leave the airport you won't have any issues cos the airline knows how it works
Advising him to take bullet train looks very expensive and remember you will need to pay extra luggage if your luggage exceed 20kg which is very expensive unless upon arrival you can take the bullet train and waybill your luggage to your apartment using yamato delivery company that is less expensive 🫰, you can do that at 7-Eleven or familymart. Alternatively you can take night bus (cheapest means). Please try to be economical in spending since you are coming to Japan new.
Yea.

My advice would be find a flight to Osaka.

Take a highway bus from Osaka to Fukuoka.
Thats the best route.
no need for him to go near Tokyo.

Airports in asia that you dont need transit visa are Malaysia and Singapore. Sadly, malaysia iarlines and Singapore airlines do not come to naija.

another option is Air France, you dont need transit visa for connecting flight.
But of rhong kong, you nee connecting flight.
For mainland China, probably also do not need, cantconfirm nor dsiprove.

Good day, Gerrard59 and blackbriar. I'm trying to book a flight using Qatar Airways and would appreciate your advice.

Do you know if a transit visa is required when passing through Hong Kong? This route is the most affordable and would take me directly to my final destination.

The other option is to travel via Osaka and take a train from there.

Going through Tokyo is not feasible, as it requires a self-transfer between Narita International Airport and Haneda International Airport, which is not included in the fare (Lagos – Doha – Tokyo), even though it's more expensive.
Yes, a transit visa is required for Hong Kong.

Fly via Osaka and take a train to complete yoir journey.
Besides, i thought school was offering free aiport shuttle?

Yes, courses in law are scarce as they will have in Japanese.

Kindly fill out all the forms as directed by Admissions and submit back to them. Seems straight forward here.

Well you asked the porfessors and you were sent a mail to say sorry, we dont do pre-approvals anymore, direct all you inquiries to admission office right?

Do you want to do MSc or Phd?
Why research student, if you already have MSc from cyprus.
Why not Phd directly?

You can focus on any course, as long as you meet the admissions requirment.
IN my hubmle opinion, Why not an MBA? [ GRIPS tokyo, TODAI, SOPHIA, KEIO, WASEDA etc]

In regards to the visa, Do not listen to the School nor any Japanese person about VIsa
The average Japanese person including japanese institutions dont understand the VIsa system.
Get all your information about Visa from the Japanese Embassy.

By your mail to ISI language school, the visa requirmeent even seem herculean.

In my humble opinion, Go through University route and not lanaguage school.

Hello everyone.

I completed my assessment with Engineer Assui.

It was granted as a professional engineer and skill level 1.

But didn't include the employment period in the outcome letter.

The assessor recommends I applied for relevant skill assessment or review of the CDR he's issued outcome.

The reason being failing to provide letters of reference from employers.

As an independent practitioner who has worked little period with companies, I do contract works and my bank statements was able to prove it.

They demanded letters from the clients which was provided but according to the assessor, it didn't outline my duties.

Please people, should apply for review or go for relevant skills assessment?

Thanks
Well, it depends on your on tentative points.
Do you have close to 90 points, without the relevant work experience?
It would be nice to have those points for relevant work experience.

In the meantime, submit an EOI immediately.
do not go for review. Just waste of funds.
Simply apply for relevant experience recognition.
Well, you will need to contact your employers for job description employment letter and tax payment receipts.
If you are self-employed, simply refer t Engineers Australia booklet for self-employment documentation.
