Hello seniors in the house

Is it necessary to get reference letters from the companies one has worked with in Nigeria before landing?

Will Canadian employers ask for it?

Hi, it's a good idea to get it if you can. Smaller employers will find it useful in getting an idea of what your previous supervisors think about you. I've seen recruitment decisions swayed in favor of applicants because they were able to present favorable reference letters at face to face interviews. For some bigger employers, they tend to contact/write directly to past employers/supervisors in some cases and get the reference.

is 20 million Naira enough to move to Canada?

It depends on your family size but N20m in readily available funds seems like a fair sum. See the expected funds one needs to have in place while processing an application for permanent residence through Express Entry below and at this link, https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/documents/proof-funds.html

Hello guys,
I want to thank you for assisting fellow nigerians to settle down in Canada. God bless you.
I am a Nigerian trained veterinarian with a nigerian masters in food animal medicine and a UK masters degree in global health and development. I will be landing in Canada in September.
1) Please what are the cities that have good job opportunities available for veterinarians or people with my background (vet with global health ) in Canada. Indeed.ca, eluta.ca, workopolis are just a few of the job search sites that can help you check various cities and determine which have the most opportunities for your field
2) I have an expired driver's license (2016) obtained in Nigeria. Do i have to obtain an international driver's license to facilitate my driver's license permit in Canada. If yes, how can I go about obtaining the international driver's license in Nigeria. International drivers licence is not required to drive or get licensed in Canada, don't bother with it. Instead, you will have to process and obtain a valid Nigerian driving licence or licence of whatever country where you are currently driving and bring with you. You can drive with your valid foreign drivers licence for 3 weeks in most provinces but the moment you present it for processing to get a Canadian licence, you can't use it in Canada anymore. You will then have to wait until a class of licence that allows you drive here
3) Are there any bridging programs for foreign-trained veterinarians in Canada? Yes, check this, https://cvo.org/For-Applicants/Applicant-Types/Internationally-Trained-Veterinarians.aspx and this http://canadianimmigrant.ca/careers-and-education/veterinary-medicine

Hi, I hope the responses above are useful to you.
Thank you as you help me out.

Hello everyone. Please I have a question. We intend landing at the end of January next year. However, my driver's license is expiring ending of February. Is it possible to conclude the G2 driving test within a space of one month before my license expires? Or is it better to get a new license reissued? cc; @salford1 @blackbuddy @Ballerz and anyone else please

Hi, it is possible to conclude the G1 and G2 within a month depending on your ability to pass them in that time. Once you present your valid Nigerian drivers licence as soon as you land and register for the G1, you wont need to present it again even if you don't get to G2 within a month. All the best.

Hello Sir, one last thing. I got the HST credit cheque in the mail yesterday, do I send it back with my explanation letter?

If the HST cheque was issued based on the inaccurate filing you earlier did, then yes. Please return it along with your explanation letter.

Greetings to everyone @vcole, @salford @salford1, @ovie @blackbuddy @maternal
Okay I got a question to ask as this is the final step before I apply for my PR.
I wanted to take the IELTS but the last sit closer to my centre got filled up quickly. Now I am considering taking CELPIP.

What is your advise on taking the CELPIP instead of IELTS?

Please I need advise from experienced individuals

Hi, as at now, CELPIP General Test for PR status to Canada is only available in Canada, Philippines, UAE and USA. Unless you're based in any of those locations, it's not a feasible option. If I may suggest, the earlier you get a date for IELTS and begin to study for it, the better for you. Hope this helps, https://www.celpip.ca/test-locations-fees/

Hi everyone, please I need good advice.
While doing the initial application for child benefit, I made a mistake in the incomes for both 2016 and 2017 (converted using USD rate instead of CAD rate leading to an understatement ). When and how to I correct this?

Hi, write back (explanation letter) to the Tax Office you initially sent the application for child benefits to, explaining the use of wrong currency exchange rate in arriving at your equivalent income for the years you stated. Attach a new set of application forms you've filled out with correct income stated and send all with a copy of the previous form containing the wrong rates (for reference) and you will be fine. There may be a delay in processing your new application as they need to reconcile your position but it's better that you are getting it rectified once and for all.

Hello everyone, I have a peculiar situation. I have a certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology, its a 3 year program run by Colleges Of Health Technologies in Nigeria.
After the 3 years in a College Of Health Technology, you sit for a licensing exam organised by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria(MLSCN).
If you pass, you're inducted and given a practicing liscense which you renew annually. My question is this:

1. Do I send the transcript and certificate issued by the College Of Health Technology or the transcript and certificate issued by the MLSCN (NB: IQAS says you must submit a record of all the years of study, but the MLSCN transcript only has the record of the licencing exam.)
*I have called iqas and explained my situation and they referred me to their website, but the only information available is for Nurses. I also called the MLSCN but they don't seem to have any idea.
Mcstan18 sunvick glisteringstar newmum0615 Elfman is back to judge cocthrane 40manlappy blackbuddy ethelia ifeoma77

Hi, you could send both as the cost to evaluate either, 1, 2 or more certificates sent together is the same. Then you would receive an ECA that covers both or just the one that IQAS feel is relevant, cheers.

Hi guys! Are students required to show cash (POF) at point of entry? I might be carrying something less than $900CAD because i will be getting more money from a relative in Toronto after i open a bank account in canada. Is something less than $900CAD too small to show? I am thinking of also showing my tuition fees receipt since i have paid that.

Hi, everyone is expected to declare cash they are landing with including students. This is more so for amounts equal to or over $10k. In your case, just declare what you have which shouldn't be an issue per your profile as a student and if asked, indicate that your relative will give you access to more funds as needed. It is a good idea to have evidence of tuition paid with you, have a safe trip and happy landing.

Hi,
I believe she can go to the nearest International Airport(with a CIC department) or the closest Land Border to where she lives to get it resolved. Both options seem to be the most efficient way of resolving this kind of issue from what I have heard so far.

Yes please, since she is in Ontario, let her return to Pearson Airport and have the intake office address the error @noblebirth.

Please let us know how it goes, cheers.

Hi All please any updates on anyone who applied through this ELB FiRM and ESQ6 Nigeria@blackbuddy what's up with your friend that applied through them. There seem to be sketchy info about these guys. Anyone with Info kindly post.

Hi, the gentleman who earlier raised the issue of the firm, ELB, recently reached out to me that he would not be using them. As you rightly pointed out, the online details about them are sketchy. I would suggest pursuing your Canadian immigration application on your own with assistance from knowledgeable folks at the Canadian Express Entry/Federal Skilled Workers Program-Connect Here Part 4 thread on Nairaland.

dear landed seniors, pls I need your help with this contemplation. we are considering leaving our kids(2boys 5 and 3) behind with my mom, so we can integrate and hustle easily when we land. then come back for them once we've settled, and before their medical expires. pls what are your thoughts. it will be highly appreciated.

There's nothing wrong with your plan provided your kids land here before the expiration of the one-entry visa that's issued in your passports with COPR. Please take note of this date, all the best to you and your wife.

About this PTA, does the bank not give in Canadian dollar? Where will i change to canadian dollar if i am given USD please?

Also, a minimum of how much canadian dollar do you recommend a graduate student going to alberta should have in her pocket?

No, you get USD in Nigeria from the banks and then walk into any bank in Canada after you arrive and change to CAD. You can open both USD and CAD accounts here, change some to CAD for your use and deposit the rest USD. As exchange rate fluctuates, you can change to CAD to your advantage, that's how it is done,

It is advised to bring as much money as you can as there's no limit as to what is recommended, you are the one who knows how much you have or how much your sponsors can afford. Just declare how much you have when required throughout your trip, cheers.

Hi everyone, I'm asking on behalf of a friend (silent reader) who just got ppr mail yesterday. The head of department for her previous company (the one she used her work experience in) just passed away last week and the company has removed his details from the website. The deceased was the one who signed her reference letter.

She is worried that another review of the file will be done before her passport is stamped and that if they don't find his details on the website it can cause problem. Can this be an issue? I do remember seeing somewhere that another review may be done but I'm not sure, hence her asking me to put the question here.

Your response will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, this will not be an issue as the HOD could also have resigned and moved on with his career the day after he issued the reference. It does not invalidate the reference given. IRCC/VO will simply reach out to another officer in the company through the HR group for validation, get validation from HR directly or request (through ADR - additional document request) that you send an updated reference letter if at all that they really need to review/request at this stage.

No need to be worried, this happens all the time all over the world and the VOs have a process in place to address this. All the best with the rest of the application processing.

For those who landed with kids of school age, is there a possibility of getting places for them in public schools if one lands after September?

Of course, once you show proof of residence in the school's catchment area and there is space in their respective grades to accommodate them. Where a school can not accommodate kids due to space constraints, you will be referred to the closest other school in the neighborhood that can take them.

Hello E-Fam,

Please would like some input on this.

I have some pending interviews like part of this week and next week.

I have an offer of 65k/yr presently from the first interview I have ever done in Canada just last week.

Just got into the country last month...started applying for jobs the first week of this month.

For someone in ONT is this good offer or should I see what the other guys will offer.

Elder Blackbuddy Help your boy oh!

Hi, you need to provide more context smiley

What is your experience and what is the role? With more details, we could see if it's a fair offer but I must say, 65k on its own is a fair first offer. Congratulations!

Thanks bro. You don't get a certificate after traditional solemnization in Nigeria. I am therefore left with the option of attaching an LEO alongside my marriage certificate while filling my documents.

Thanks again bro

Hi, you actually get a certificate in certain communities after traditional marriage, recognised by the customary/magistrate courts. I have mine as do many others. All the best with your LoE.

Hello friends,

I know I shouldn't be asking this question here but I uderstand thhere is no where else I would get first hand counsel.

I am hoping to get ITA soon and I intend to come over with my wife and kids, we have been married since over five years and blessed with children but the thorny sissue is that we only got married traditionally. We are considering going through the process of getting a marriage certificate from a Local Govt. registry but I am also feeling that might hinder our getting PR since the certificate will bear a recent date.

Note: My children have valid birth certificates and my wife's masters degree carries my name(Her new name).

Should we apply as common law partners or go ahead with registering our marriage legally?

Thanks

The date of marriage on your marriage certificate has no bearing on your application, no negative effect in this your stated situation. Use your traditional marriage certificate to show when you first became a couple and your registry marriage certificate to show when you went to court. Even unmarried couples with children get granted PR, common law unions are equally recognised. Don't forget Canada recognises unmarried couples here as valid families. The province of Newfoundland just granted legal parents status to 3 people who have a child together in their polyamorous 'family' here. All the best with your application smiley

OK . thanks a lot. After I adopt her she would need to change her surname to mine right?

No, that is not a must. It's not compulsory. The child can still keep the birth surname to honour the birth family or change to yours, it's by your collective choice. All the immigration processing requires is evidence that the relevant government body in Nigeria has formally given you adoption rights. Just like evidence of marriage is marriage certificate but the bride may choose to keep her maiden name or add the two. All the best.
