coolhayor: Hi, Hamilton is a nice, small and younger city and a manufacturing hub especially for steel production. Some steel production plants are located including one owned by Arcelor Mittal, world's largest steel producer. If you have a blue collar background in manufacturing, you could consider settling there. You can use this link to search for different spec of cars in Hamilton to get likely prices, https://www.kijiji.ca/b-cars-trucks/gta-greater-toronto-area/c174l1700272 This link will help you get started in looking at accommodation options in Hamilton, https://www.kijiji.ca/b-apartments-condos/hamilton/c37l80014 Here's a link to the elementary schools in Hamilton, http://www.hwdsb.on.ca/elementary/schools/ You can do school comparison here, http://ontario.compareschoolrankings.org/elementary/SchoolsByRankLocationName.aspx All the best ahead. 14 Likes 6 Shares |

Negotiate: salford1 is right, the bicycle as a primary use of transport in Canada is only possible in dreams And now that winter is here where even car driving takes skill, bicycles have all gone into storage and it's not an exaggeration. It's just not feasible so rathe,r budget up to $4,000.00 for a decent used car to get you around depending on your taste. But beware of cars that are dirt cheap to avoid buying a lemon, you want to own/use the car and not the other way around. After landing for me, it was buses, taxis and trains until my wife got her job then I opened my tight hands and got a car I just wanted to hold on to our POF until Canadian income was coming in to avoid using money for family living to maintain a car, pay insurance, etc. It helped that we landed in summer and that my kids loved the buses here since they had never used public transport/taxis back in Nigeria. I remember the first time I took them on keke Napep in my Gbagada neighborhood for the experience, it was like Disney World to them! Anyway, once you're used to Google Maps as a means to plan your movements and get a travel card like Ontario's Presto, you will do okay. The key is to plan your trips out, note the route and the wether you will need buses/trains (I recommend using them just to help you learn to get around your city) and always set out early. If you have young kids, then taxis will do the trick for you for family outings. 12 Likes 8 Shares |

DatechMan: Pardon my late response to your PM. On this issue, it could be real painful to go through but please have patience and follow up with phone calls. They may process it faster so in the meantime see what you can do per job search, reaching out to recruiters and attending an immigrant training/bridging program. Just find ways to help you pass the time. For the phone, not all carriers need to see your SIN so find one who will issue you a line to use with your phone from Nigeria so you just get a simple pay per use line and not a contract. When the SIN issue is sorted out, you can move to any other desirable carrier with the same phone line by just porting. Be encouraged, you are a PR now 24 Likes 2 Shares |

XX01: Using the insurance companies here will be expensive for an immigrant especially considering the issue of lack of credit history when it comes to pricing. This tends to make the premiums quoted on the high side and for someone converting dollars to naira, you need all the savings you can find. This is why I mentioned reputable Nigerian insurance companies as I personally had good experiences with them before I left Nigeria but please go for what gives you comfort at the end of it all. Some Canadian companies you can Google in Ontario include Ontario Blue Cross, CAA Travel Insurance, Allianz and Sun Life which I currently use here through my employer. 1 Like 3 Shares |

Tombrook0: Generally speaking, BC and Ontario are the more pricier provinces to live in but there is a trade off that they also host more work opportunities. BC has great weather while Ontario is home to the headquarters of many Canadian employers especially in the GTA. There is no green card system in Canada. You should study the requirements for Canadian Express Entry program instead. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Tombrook0: Hmn, I would advise caution as the classes of jobs you mentioned are not what government usually gives work permit for. Ask your friend which agency obtained those blue collar roles for him so we can research them to see of its a legitimate arrangement. I've had to counsel people in the past who almost fell victim to employment scam. It's not a pretty situation. 3 Likes |

Tombrook0: Hi, does your friend already have a post graduate work visa or permanent resident visa? Does he already have a visa that gives him leave to remain status in Canada? If yes, the sales manager position is obviously a better choice. If your friend does not already have a visa that gives leave to remain and work in Canada, then I'm not sure if you asked the right question to begin with. Perhaps he should begin with finding out how to apply for a permanent resident visa which he can learn from the first page of this thread. Please direct him there or clarify your enquiry. |
