The semblance of improved power supply experienced in the past weeks in some parts of the country has evaporated with the announcement on Thursday by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria that electricity generation had dropped by 700 mega watts.

According to the company, it received a notice from the Nigerian Gas Company on Wednesday informing it of the shut down of Utorogu gas station due to vandalism.

In a statement, the management of the PHCN said this development had further reduced its power generation capacity, which depended mainly on gas fired thermal plants.

PHCN said, “As a result of this development, Olorunsogo, Omotosho and Delta power stations have been completely shut down while Egbin, PHCN’s largest power station is constrained to reduce its generation to 400MW.

“Similarly, Sapele power station was shut down since November 2008 as a result of gas limitation.

“The loss in gas supply had led to a cut back in generation by over 700MW, and would entail load shedding in many parts of the country.”

However, President Umaru Yar’Adua said on Thursday in Abuja that everything that would esnure that the nation generates 6,000 megawatts by the end of 2009 had been put in place.

He also announced that by 2011, a total of 10,000 megawatts would be generated in the country.

Yar’Adua said, “The plans have been concluded; implementation have begun and all the required funding for the attainment of this objective is in place.

“I want to express my confidence that by the grace of God, these targets would be achieved by the end of this year and by the end of 2011.”

Statistics released last week in Abuja by the Minister of Power, Dr. Lanre Babalola, indicated that PHCN currently has the capacity to generate 3,955MW, but was constrained by gas shortage, hence it could only generate 1,945MW.

On their part, Independent Power Producers generated 1,073MW and lost 70MW to gas inadequacy.

Babalola put the quantity of gas needed to activate the wasting PHCN/IPP capacity at 580 million metric standard cubic feet per day, while the extra gas that would be required after the rehabilitation and improvements by PHCN and the IPPs would be 420mmscf.

By the latest development, total power generation by PHCN may have dropped below 1,245MW.

Pah!
The problem with Nigeria isn't with the leaders. It's with Nigerians.
On the roads, in the office, at home. . .the vast majority of Nigerians are happy to break rules for their own selfish ends.

We have discussed this matter so many times. The EPl is highly overatted more emphasis is placed on speed rather than technical ability. The only difference in comparsion to other european leagues is money . The league is so bad that it is only dominated by the top four team. The remaining 16 teams have nothing to write home about
