No . I do not personally think so . The military service , I think , is quite a different thing from the type of programme that you have for the National Youth Service Corps . Military service entails full military training and to give someone that kind of training , the person must pass through basic training in a military depot. In the case of the Nigerian Army, that kind of basic training lasts for nine months . So , if you are going to convert the NYSC scheme into military service , it means the whole service year will almost be spent on military training alone . After nine months of this kind of training , a corps member will have only three months left to engage in active NYSC service year . What are you going to do within the three months left ? NYSC is a kind of civilian service with a bit of quasi military training at the outset to give the corps members proper orientation towards national service . It was not designed for full military service . It should remain the way it is . If the government wants to beef up the training , fine ; it can do that . But with the economic situation , as it is now , I do not know whether Nigeria is even going to consider doing so . All of us are aware of what is happening in terms of the economic challenges. I do not know if there is money around to do a number of things that the Federal Government wants to do. At least , they tell us that the money is not available and we have no reason to doubt them . We shouldn ’ t talk of embarking on a new thing that will involve a lot of financial commitments . What I believe that operators of the scheme can do is to keep updating the scheme , reviewing its objectives and commitment to the service such that it will continually be in keeping with the ever changing situation in the country. If you do that , you update it and you find that every year , it has something new to offer the country. That is what I think we should do. It should restrict itself to what it was designed to do from the very beginning. I will however suggest that it should be constantly updated to address modern challenges in order to remain relevant. • Col . Peter Obasa ( A former Director -General , National Youth Service Corps ) If we convert the NYSC service year to military service , is the government going to arm them ? Are you going to train them in the handling of weapons ? To me, the talk about converting service year to military year is not reasonable . The suggestion is not reasonable. The intention of the NYSC when it was created was to promote unity and national integration in the country and I think the scheme is still serving that purpose . But there is no rationale behind converting the service year to a year of military training. This is because you are not going to arm them and secondly, this will negate the aim and objective of setting up the scheme . Now , looking at the safety of corps members , you will recall that the NYSC authorities too have taken a decision not to post corps members to volatile areas. They now post them to areas nearest to their communities. In the interim and until the country stabilises , I think the NYSC should maintain the policy of posting corps members to non - volatile communities. The NYSC must continue to consider the welfare of the corps members |

EKITI State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has told Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, to stop continuous complaints about alleged corruption in the immediate past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governments. Rather, he admonished him that: “Nigerians are now more interested in what the government has done to make life more meaningful for them and not what the previous governments did or failed to do.” Fayose said, “today, the most difficult question any student can be asked to answer in an examination is to list just five landmark achievements of the government in which Prof Osinbajo is the Vice President.” The governor, who said corruption has become more endemic in the present All Progressives Congress (APC) government added that; “If the Vice President can look around himself with honest eyes, he will see majority of those who called the shots during the previous PDP governments that he claimed mismanaged the country’s resources holding sensitive positions in the present government. “Today, even prosecution witnesses are suddenly disappearing in corruption cases involving those who have decamped to the APC and properties once seized are being returned to them. Obviously, PDP has purged itself of corrupt elements in its fold and offloaded them to the APC.” In a statement issued on Friday, by the Special Assistant to the governor on Public Communications and New Media, Mr Lere Olayinka, Fayose said he was beginning to have a second thought on the Vice President, saying, as a pastor, he should not be seen playing to the gallery or defend falsehood. Instead, Fayose said, “Osinbajo should be telling Nigerians what happened to the report of those probe panels that he headed. How many of those members of the APC indicted by his Probe Panel have been charged to court? What happened to those involved in the fraudulent reinstatement of wanted ex-Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina? Fayose: Buhari’s govt confused, says police conflicting statements on Dapchi girl, Leah, release embarrassing The governor said; “To me, it is time for Prof Osinbajo to say something new and stop playing to the gallery because he is expected to know better. Even if the President does not know, he should know that Nigerians are tired of this directionless government that keeps blaming its predecessors for its inability to prepare even budget. “Even though I have great respect for the Vice President, but of recent; I am constrained to begin to have a rethink. As a Professor and Pastor, methinks he should be a light in this government of darkness, and the engine room of the government. But shamefully, he goes about saying things that are not true. “Despite being a Professor of Law, the Vice President defended EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu that was indicted of corruption by the Department of State Service, an agency under the President, by saying that Magu does not need the National Assembly to clear him. He is always jumping to defend what is indefensible in this government.” While challenging the Vice President to list the government’s achievements, Governor Fayose said; “It was under three years that PDP government solved communication problems in Nigeria by providing Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) that has made it possible for Nigerians to use the internet, social media and even bank in the comfort of their homes. Tambuwal’s wife inaugurates 3 dryers to empower 135 women “Also, it was under three years that the PDP government of Dr Goodluck Jonathan established nine federal universities, 127 Almajiri schools, 34 new Colleges of Education, among several others. The exchange rate was kept at N197 and petrol was sold at N87 per litre while a bag of rice remained at N7, 000. “It is almost three years; Prof Osinbajo should tell Nigerians what their government did and stop the blame-game, please. “Most importantly, if the Vice President has evidence of corruption against anyone that served in the previous governments and the present, he should be bold enough to present the evidence to the court at a proper trial, not at public functions because alleged corruption cases are not tried at social |
