chino11:Yes, the poor health of infrastructural development needs to be addressed by the state Gov. They are our elected representative and we expect them to travel far and wide on our behalf, to dialogue with businesses abroad and offer incentives for them to invest in Nigeria and create jobs for the Nigerian residence and indigences. Southeast need now to focus on infrastructural development, in terms of hard and soft infrastructure cumulatively. Incentives have to be created for our people out of the region to invest at home alongside whatever they manage outside the southeast zone. This is basics and really not hard to accomplish for the Gov's as it is their jobs. |

Very good strategic route to industrialise Nigeria but exactly how do they intend to execute such project successfully with out handing over ownership of industries to Foreign Direct Investors or Multinational Companies? The Nigerian Stock Exchange would fair better with Nigerian Stakeholders in such industry. Development is never one way but cumulative and diverse. It is a bit like synchronise swimming with all industries and players coming in line. |
Nothing to discuss on Jonathan watch. Try again later. ![]() |

This just makes me laugh, to think not much have changed till this day. Only recently was a black girl permanently excluded from University for stabbing a group of racist white men that physically attacked her boyfriend whilst they were walking together. |
Such is the story of Lena Baker, an African-American mother of three, who was electrocuted at the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville. She was convicted for the fatal shooting of E. B. Knight, a white Cuthbert, Georgia mill operator she was hired to care for after he broke his leg. She was 44 and the only woman ever executed in Georgia’s electric chair. For Baker, a Black maid in the segregated south in the 1940’s, her story was a tough sell to a jury of 12 white men. And rumors that she was romantically involved with victim E. B. Knight did not help. Her murder trial lasted just a day, without a single witness called by her court-appointed lawyer. She was convicted and sentenced to death. John Cole Vodicka, director of an Americus-based inmate advocacy program known as the Prison and Jail Project, said Knight had kept Ms. Baker as his "virtual sex slave." She was his paramour, she was his mistress, and, among other things, his drinking partner. If you read the transcript and have any understanding of black-white relations, Black women were often subjected to the intimate whims of their white masters, their white bosses, or some white man who had control over their lives or the lives of their families. "Here is one who resisted and paid the price.” The undertaker who brought her body back to Cuthbert buried her in a grave that went unmarked for five decades, until the congregation of Mount Vernon Baptist Church raised $250 for a concrete slab and marker. Relatives are still trying to clear her name with the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole. Lena Baker, who had a sixth-grade education, stated publicly her innocence to the very end. “What I done, I did in self-defense," she said in her final statement. "I have nothing against anyone. I am ready to meet my God.” A novel, The Lena Baker Story, authored by Lela Bond Phillips, chronicles her life. This book was the basis for a screenplay by actor/director Ralph Wilcox filmed in 2007 in Southwest Georgia. The film, also entitled "The Lena Baker Story," stars Tichina Arnold in the title role, Peter Coyote, Beverly Todd and Michael Rooker and is due for theatrical release in Spring 2009. ChinenyeN:Very true! The level of decay in both state is something that can no longer be ignored. PDP clearly has done nothing for them since democracy was instituted in the country. It is time an alternative solution is sought and APGA is not a wrong place to start that search for accountability and progress. |

Nor would you see so many Anambra indigenes fed up with his tenure (at least, in the media and from forums like this.)[/quote]He really has done alot of wat he promised to do. Obi managed to acomplish so much for Anambra State whilst maintaining a low level of debt and today Anambra is ranked amongst the most developed State outside the FCT or Lagos. Going by recent reports on the Media and the productivity of South east States, it is clear dat Abia and Ebonyi have been left to rot by their PDP Administrator. Monday, September 26, 2011 Coordinating Minister of the Economy and the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called for debt relief for African countries, most of which are in the low income bracket. Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Addressing journalists in Washington DC., United States (US) of America, venue of the on-going Annual General Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), Okonjo-Iweala said Low Income countries (LICs) are facing high and unsustainable debt burdens, which is stagnating their growth, urging the IMF to further strengthen its engagements with African countries through enhanced financing, using its various lending facilities, policy advice and technical assistance. Specifically, she called on the Fund to increase the concessionality of fund lending to LICs and extend the interest-free moratoriumon fund concession resources beyond 2011. Equally important, she said, was the need for the IMF to actively support LICs’ efforts to access international markets and also review the sustainability framework in order to accommodate the higher investment needs of most LICs, while preserving the soundness of public finances. The minister expressed happiness at the rapid recovery of the majority of LCIs from the global economic crises which she said reflect their strong structural reforms efforts,pre-crisis macroeconomic policybuffers built during the good old days and increased ownership of policies and flexibility in the funds financing and engagement with the authorities. The reform efforts, she said are instrumental to attracting investment inflows into the African region. However, she said continuing the trend would hing on robust growth and recovery in advanced economies, even as she lamented the negative effect of rising flood prices which has put upward pressure on inflationary trends and exacerbated food insecurity for many countries in the region, particularly net food importing countries. For emerging markets and developing economies, there is a need to accelerate the unwinding of accommodative macroeconomic policies to avoid overheating in the face of strong economic activity, while ensuring that the poor are protected from the effects of higher food and fuel prices. Okonjo-Iweala said that while growth has remained robust, some vulnerability still exists, noting that many LICs remain vulnerable to the resurgnce of the global fuel and food price increases which is slowing down growth. LCIs, she lamented, also face inadequate financing of priority development projects in the face of possible decline in aid flows as well as slow recovery in exports with the persistent slow recovery in advanced economies.http://odili.net/news/source/2011/sep/26/502.html |
We ‘ll conquer Goliaths – Jonathan Headlines Monday, September 26, 2011 By Emma Ujah, Abuja Bureau Chief ABUJA-In anapparent response to criticisms that he is weak and too tolerant, President Goodluck Jonathan vowed yesterday to bring down those he described as "the Goliaths of Nigeria", declaring that he did not have to rule with autocratic powers like the Biblical Pharaoh to change Nigeriattp INDEPENDENCE SERVICE-President Goodluck Jonathan with CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim and Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinri at the Interdenominational Church Service to mark Nigeria's51st Independence Celebrations at the National Christian Centre, Abuja yesterday. Photo: Abayomi Adeshida. advertisement Speaking at the interdenominational church service to mark the 51st anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence in Abuja, Dr. Jonathan said his critics expected him to govern the nation like a ruler with autocratic powers or a military general but that he would rather disappoint them, as he wasn't cut out as such a character. His words: "You have been praying for us but others will not even want us to move an inch, especially those of us who are politicians. But one prayer I will continue to request because if you listen to Nigerians or read their statements, some Nigerians still want the President of this country to be a lion or a tiger, somebody that has that kind of strength and force and agility to make things happen the way they think. "Some others will want the President to operate like an army general or my Chief of Army Staff commanding his troop. Incidentally, I am not a lion, I am not also a general. "Somebody will want the president to operate like the Kings of Syria, Babylon, Egypt, the pharaoh, all the powerful people that you read about in the Bible. They want the president to operate that way, the characters of the Goliath, unfortunately I am not one of those. "But God knows why I am here even though I don't have any of those attributes, or those kinds of characters I have used as an example. But through your prayers God placed me here. The only thing I ask you to do for me and that is the prayer I pray every time, is for God to use me to change this country. "I don't need to be a lion, I don't need to be Nebuchadnezzar, I don't need to operate like the Pharoah of Egypt, I don't need to be an army general but I can change this country without those traits. "You know these days for you to be an intellectual and for people to listen to you, you have to abuse government. Somebody was asking, is Nigeria on an auto pilot? Meaning a plane without a pilot and I say Nigeria is being piloted by God himself." President Jonathan therefore urged Nigerian Christians to pray fervently for him and Nigeria, as he admitted "it will not be easy for us but with God, we will get where we want to be". He added: “It is not going to be easy because just like Rev. Yusuf Turaki said, there are Goliaths every where, very terrible Goliaths; the ones that can even kill their father and mother and even their children in order to stop government. So we have these terrible Goliaths that are trying to frustrate us but surely with God we will conquer them. “As Pastor (Ayo) Oritsejafor said recently, every Goliath has an exposed forehead. God will expose their foreheads to the stone of David." The president also reacted to insinuations that participants at the just-concluded United Nations General Assembly in New York, abandoned the hall the moment it was his turn to address the gathering, out of disregard, saying that "those critics missed the point and that Nigeria was commended by President Barak Obama of the United States, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, the UN General Secretary, the South African President Jacob Zuma and a host of others, but back at home we were not appreciated". "I just got back from the US, the President of America is like the president of the world because it is the most powerful country. In most cases if you go for UN General Assembly, if you are to speak immediately after the US President then you are in trouble. Immediately he speaks about two third of the hall will leave because everybody wants to listen to the President of America. "Obama when he spoke commended Nigeria but back home we are being abused. We had the security council meeting outside the General Assembly but here we are being abused. When the President of South Africa, Gabon, spoke, they commended Nigeria but here we are not being appreciated. But what I can assure you is that Nigeria is on course and with your prayers and guidance of God we will surely get to the destination we are going", he said. Dr. Jonathan said he remained committed to the pursuit of the common good of Nigerians, in spite of the criticisms and opposition which his administration was facing, as he took solace in the help of God and the cooperation of well-meaning members of the Nigerian public. The President who was said to have flown directly from New York to the service expressed deep appreciation to Christians in the country for their prayers for him and his administration, urging them not to relent, as according to him, "politicians don't want this government to move an inch but they can't stop us". In his sermon, the President of ECWA Seminary, Prof Yusuf Turaki, condemned the religious crises in several parts of the country, as according to him, both Christianity and Islam, the two dominant religions in Nigeria had their roots in Abraham and claim to be serving God. He wondered why anyone would take up arms against a fellow human being in the name of serving God and therefore urged all adherents of the two religions to stop the hostilities. According to him, the nation had been blessed by God and that as such, all Nigerians needed to do was to work together in love in a peaceful atmosphere for all members of the public to enjoy the benefits of God's provisions in the country.http://odili.net/news/source/2011/sep/26/335.html |
Monday, September 26, 2011 Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, has described the Golden Book project embarked upon by The Sun Publishing Limited as “a bold initiative.” He said the book would give Nigeria an opportunity of telling our own story to the outside world. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim (L) receives a copy of Nigeria’s Golden Book, a publication of The Sun Newspapers from the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the company Tony Onyima during a visit to the SGF in Abuja recently advertisement While commending The Sun management on the upcoming public presentation of the book, Anyim assured Nigerians of the “principled commitment of the present administration to promote good governance through the transformation agenda. “I will like to express my deep appreciation to you for the kind invitation, and sincerely convey my best wishes to you on the successful completion of the publication which will, no doubt, serve as a useful guide in our march to nation-building”, Anyim said in a letter to The Sun. Anyim, a former Senate president, is one of the many distinguished Nigerians invited to the public presentation of the book scheduled for tomorrow at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja. Titled ‘Nigeria’s Golden Book’, the 512-page work narrates the nation’s history with some freshness. From the 1914 amalgamation through independence and the post-independence crisis, to various leadership challenges to current democratic dispensation, the book truly tells Nigeria’s story with an eye on the future. President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Dr. Yakubu Gowon differently wrote foreword to the book. Describing it as “a truly rich trove on Nigeria’s developmental history”, President Jonathan noted that the book “charts a course for the future; a future of hope, peace and progress”. In his foreword, Shagari observed that “in content and character, Nigeria’s Golden Book, a worthy and highly commendable initiative by The Sun Publishing Limited, bears an unflinching testimony to the nation’s ground-breaking achievements of the past 50 years.” On his part, Gowon described the book as “a priceless companion to those who seek deeper knowledge about Nigeria, chroniclers of history-journalists, writers, researchers and historians as well as those who might desire it for general use”. Reflecting on the content, Obasanjo wrote that “as you go through the pages of this work, it will be a good time to reflect on the transformative capacity within the human mind and the transformational leadership required for progress in Nigeria. We can tap into this reservoir and build the leadership for progress. The time to start is now.” Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar has accepted to chair the occasion while Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Governor of Ondo State will deliver the keynote speech. Senator (Dr) David B. Mark, Senate President, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, Governor of Kano State, Mr. Peter Obi, Governor of Anambra State, Mallam Sule Lamido, Jigawa State Governor are guests of honour. Mr. Ifeanyi Patrick Ubah, Managing Director/CEO of Capital Oil and Gas Industries, Chief Chika Okafor, Chairman of Chicason Group of Companies and Dr. Obinna Uzoh, Chairman of Gocuz Group are official presenters of the book. His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubukar 111, the Sultan of Sokoto and His Royal Highness, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi), Obi of Onitsha are the royal fathers of the day. Explaining the reasons for the book, Onyima said at 50 “we feel that the true Nigerian narrative deserves to be packaged, not only for the imperatives of the present, but more importantly, for the demands of posterity”. He further said that “this modest endeavour will help to achieve, at least, two purposes to reposition the country so it can take its deserved place in the comity of nations. And secondly, so that Nigerians will have the chance to pursue their full measure of happiness”. As the nation steps unto its journey to the next 50 years, Onyima called on the leaders at all levels to “explore and exploit the riches of this great nation” for her progress.http://odili.net/news/source/2011/sep/26/509.html |
Monday, September 26, 2011 From Saxone Akhaine, Kaduna TRADITIONAL rulers in the North have urged the Federal Government to provide constitutional roles for them in the wave of intense security challenges facing the country. Sultan_of_Sokotohttp://odili.net/news/source/2011/sep/26/23.html advertisement The monarchs, who met in Kaduna at the weekend under the chairmanship of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, also condemned the level of insecurity and poverty in the country. In a statement yesterday signed by the Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Hussaini Adamu, the Council of Northern Traditional Rulers "resolved to pursue all efforts for relevant legislative and constitutional review to empower traditional rulers to effectively participate in the affairs of the Nigerian state. The monarchs condemned all crises in the North, as they called on "all northerners to embrace dialogue with one another, by speaking the truth to each other, with a view to healing the wounds inflicted in the course of advancing individual's causes". Adamu said that traditional rulers in the region would remain "politically non-partisan regardless of the enormity of the pressure on them to act otherwise, as they are fathers to all in their domain". "The sustenance of peace and harmony within respective communities depends on the ability and the willingness of the elected leaders to effectively discharge their responsibilities to the electorate", he added. The traditional rulers also called on the government to live up to its responsibilities by implementing all reports on the Jos crises, in order to put an end to the violence in the state. "We call on the all relevant governments to implement the recommendations of reports made by committees of inquiries on various crises in the North, especially that of Solomon Lar committee on Jos", Adamu stressed. |
National Vice-Chairman of the PDP in the South-East, Chief Olisa Metuh, denies plot against Anyim -Pu From TAIWO AMODU, Abuja Monday, September 26, 2011 The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South-east zone has described as unfounded, allegations that chieftains of the party from the zone were hatching a plot to ensure the removal of the Secretary to the Federal Government and former Senate President, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim from office. advertisement National Vice Chairman of the party from the zone, Chief Olisa Metu yesterday, in a statement said there was no plot to remove Chief Anyim as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), stating that the South-east zone was now politically mature to warrant a repeat of succession crisis when the office of the Senate Presidency was allotted to the zone. “The South-east as a geo-political zone wishes to categorically state that there was no such plot to remove Chief Anyim from office, as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.” He further submitted that the zone had come of age as to warrant a repeat of what happened when the office of the Senate President was zoned to it in the past. “We are no longer divided by individual ambition. Chief Anyim was unanimously chosen as the SGF from the zone and he has so far continued to enjoy the support and confidence of the South-east geo-political zone and we are also proud of his leadership qualities as SGF,” Chief Metu stated. Metu, who expressed the zone’s vote of confidence on Anyim, further said the SGF, though from the South-east, should be seen as a Nigerian offering qualitative leadership and support to President Goodluck Jonathan transformation agenda. Metu noted that the South-east had never been more than united as it is now, calling on those he described as ‘political jobbers’ to steer clear and not distract Senator Anyim as the SGF, explaining that the zone would stop at nothing in ensuring the unity and integrity of the South-ast. Also, in a similar vein, a group, South- east Renewal Group, in a statement signed by its coordinator, Willy Ezeugwu said it was disappointing that people could engage in acts that amount to distracting Chief Anyim, whose choice for the position of SGF was unanimously reached by the entire people of the South-east, after they initially rejected the position as being inferior to other posts in the country. “Anyim’s appointment was hailed as capacity of SGF, just because the people of South-east nominated him and Mr. President accepted the nomination. “When the people of the entire South-east nominated Chief Anyim, it was commendable that President Goodluck Jonathan accepted the nomination and the SGF has since then served with such humility that the office is now rated positively among Nigerians. This is why it is troubling to discover that there are people who are bent ondistracting this humble man in the performance of his duties.”http://odili.net/news/source/2011/sep/26/512.html |
