In the news recently has been stories of enslaved migrants stuck in Libya, and the 26 girls who drowned in the Mediterranean sea, trying to cross from Africa over to Europe.

But what about the girls who actually make it to Europe?

In a report by Milena Veselinovic and Isa Soares for CNN, we meet Anna (not real name), a 17-year-old girl from Edo State who was trafficked at the age of 15.

Anna, an orphan, was raised by a foster family, she said, and worked as a maid but dreamed of one day becoming a doctor.

Her boss’s daughter who was living in Europe would regale her with stories of abroad. Anna said:

She told me, when you come to Europe you’ll have opportunity, you will go to school, everything is going to be OK for you.

She said you can do whatever you want, the world there is very free. I was like, wow, that would be great. And she said, OK, maybe my sister can bring you. I was so happy, I wanted to go to Europe.

Things, however, didn’t go as smoothly as Anna imagined they would. Arriving in Libya through Niger, she was held in a detention camp for 5 months, she said, where she was reportedly beaten and raped.

After her trafficker paid her ransom, Anna discovered she was pregnant. She however lost the baby after her smuggler gave her a liquid to drink. She said:

“I don’t even know how it happened. All I know is I was given a bottle of water and then I started bleeding. I was in a lot of pain. It was so painful.”

When she finally arrived in Italy, she discovered she now owed her traffickers €35,000, and was made to become a sex worker, bringing in €200 daily. She said:

“They dressed me up, they make my hair, they make me up. I didn’t even know what they were doing. They gave me a bag with condoms.”

“If a man sleeps with you the most he can pay is €30. Calculate how many men you have to sleep with to get that. You pay, pay, pay, and it never gets finished.”

Eventually, and luckily, Anna escaped, and is now being looked after by Progetto Integrazione Accoglienza Migranti (PIAM) – a migrant rights charity run by a Nigerian trafficking survivor, Princess Inyang Okokon.

Anna now knows better, and has words for people who wish to take the same leap as she did. She said:

“I would not advise anybody to take the same journey I took. Because I might have survived it, you may not survive it.”

Words of warning

Turin deputy chief prosecutor Paolo Borgna, who spent years tackling the trafficking of Nigerian women, says that the girls who are forced into prostitution are getting progressively younger.

Borgna says it is difficult to get victims to report their exploiters to the police. He says the Italian state used to be able to offer the incentive of temporary legal residence to victims who came forward, but that’s no longer the case, as those claiming asylum now get a temporary residence permit while their claim is being evaluated — a process that can take years.

“What needs to be done, on an administrative level rather than on the judicial level, is to reduce the waiting time to grant or to deny the status of refugees,” says Borgna.

Though Becky counts herself lucky to have escaped the clutches of her traffickers, her ordeal haunts her, and she has been seeing a psychologist to deal with her trauma.

For those thinking of making the journey to Europe, the teenager has stark words of warning: “Many people, if you ask them not to come, they would not listen to you. Because they think that living abroad is the best life ever,” she says.

“Everybody wants to come here, everybody wants to see what it’s like. But it’s not what they think it is.

“I would not advise anybody to take the same journey I took. Because I might have survived it, you may not survive it.”

A 22-year-old Ghanaian prostitute, Queen Farcadi has revealed how much she rakes in from her line of business.

During her interview with Berla Mundi on the “Late Afternoon Show” on a Ghanaian Tv she disclosed how much she earns from engaging in prostitution.

Speaking on the show, Farcadi who runs a premium snapchat disclosed to Berla Mundi that she makes GH¢30,000 a month from the prostitution business, thus GH¢10,000 offline and GH¢20,000 online which is the equivalent of 2.3 Million Naira.

She further added that she does not feel ashamed of what does but rather feels very comfortable since she does not need to commit murder or do drugs in other to make money.

“So far as I’m not doing drugs and I’m using my body to make money, I don’t care,” Queen Farcadi said.

Queen Farcadi is a mother of one who makes a lot of money from her premium snap-chat account, and has over 50, 000 followers on Instagram.

A 50-year-old Ugandan man, Mohammed Ssemanda, has wowed many and sundry after he married three women at a wedding ceremony, and quite surprisingly, the newly weds were all captured on camera, all smiles at the event.

While speaking to New Vision newspaper, the groom who is a food vendor in Kasenyi landing site, a Kampala suburb, said he opted for the joint wedding with his three wives due to lack of finance to hold separate functions.

He said; “My wives are not jealous against each other. Good enough, each one has got a home and I promise to work harder and support them”.

The man’s first wife, 48-year-old Salmat Naluwugge, has spent 20 years with him and they have five kids, while the others are; 27-year-old Jameo Nakayiza, and 24-year-old Mastulah, who are sisters.

“I thank our husband for marrying us all at once, a sign that will not discriminate or sideline any of us,” a visibly overjoyed Naluwugge said at the wedding.

Singer, Burna Boy has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly sending armed men to attack his colleague, Mr. 2kay at Eko Hotels and Suites.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Chike Oti, in a statement said the ‘Soke’ crooner was “subsequently arrested, interrogated and detained and is expected to be charged to court on Monday alongside four of members of the gang earlier arrested”.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, after the interrogation, said the State Police Command has zero tolerance for all forms of crime and would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable in any criminal offence perpetrated in the State.

“There would be no sacred cows. This Command is poised to ensure that every resident can feel safe wherever they are and carry out their businesses without fear or favour. Anyone, therefore, found to be involved in this case would be made to face the law to clear his or her name or face prosecution,” the statement quoted Imohimi as saying.

The pop musician, who was declared wanted by the Lagos Police Command in connection with the robbery attack on another popular musician, Mr. 2kay at Eko Hotel and Suites early last month, reported to the Command headquarters in Ikeja at about 5pm.

Tunmise Omotore, gang leader of the suspected robbers, had confessed on how they disguised as room service to rob Mr. 2kay at Eko Hotel and Suites on the instruction of Burba Boy’s Road Manager, Joel Kantiock.

The Federal Government this week announced that when some power generation projects were completed by 2018, they could generate additional 1,129 Mega Watts to the current 7,000 Mega Watts in the country.

Minster of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said this at the 22nd monthly meeting of stakeholders in the power sector at Geregu, Kogi.

Fashola said “the Azura power plant will give us another 450MW; I know that we will also get 10MW of wind power from Katsina State. I know that we will get 115MW from Gbari and 30MW from Kashimbila.

From Afam III, we will give 240MW of power in 2018, while Gurara is working to deliver 30MW, as Dadinkowa in Gombe will provide 29MM and Kaduna will generate 215 MW. All these power plants do not involve the mini grids and solar systems that are coming.”

The minister explained that in spite of the attainment of the current 7,000MW in the country, 2,000MW of the total power was not being distributed to Nigerians.

He said it was important to devise means of taking the unutilised 2,000MW to Nigerians who needed power, noting that “we cannot afford to keep power; that is not good for business, especially those who invested in it.

One of the steps we are taking with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPH) is to try and complete some of the distribution projects under the Nigerian National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) projects.

In Kogi, the distribution project that will affect the people positively are the ones in Okene, Igba, which will be completed in the first quarter of 2018.”

Fashola said the narrative must change from not enough power to how unutilised power could be distributed. He explained that he had contacted the President of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to discuss how its members could key into the undistributed power.

He added that “Director Generator, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and other chambers of commerce had been contacted on how to take up the 2000 unused megawatts

He attributed the success recorded in the sector so far to government polices, “especially the provision of N701 billion assurance guarantee fund that enabled the payment to gas suppliers by Generating Companies (Gencos).

“The assurance guarantee brought confidence to power production business, which resulted to increased power production which took us to all-time high of 7,000MW power availability.

As at Dec. 5, 2017, power supply stood at 5,019MW, which was below the 5,074 MW achieved in January 2016. However, grid supplied power peaked at all-time high of 5,155 MW on Dec 8, an increase over the January 2016 figure of 5,074 MW” he said.

He said the success was due to teamwork and leadership provided by President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice-President Yemi Osinbanjo and other stakeholders.

He then urged stakeholders to join hands in solving the problems in the sector, saying it was a privilege to be involved in salvaging the challenges in the sector.

You call your ambition, “your hustle”, and you have several of them because you are tireless and eager to achieve financial independence – no matter how elusive it appears. You are optimistic but you are also anxious.

You have seen others toil long and hard for economic security in vain, decades of labour without fruit. Some of your friends may have discussed emigrating with you – legally or illegally, and some may have lost their young lives crossing the Mediterranean in search of a future overseas where their talents are recognized and rewarded.

You may even know a few in Libya, unsuspecting victims to the ugly acts of slave trade. A combination of these factors has left you disillusioned and disconnected. You don’t believe in politics. There is no use in getting involved.

You have seldom experienced good governance, so you think, “What’s the point?” But despite the gloom, there actually is indeed a point.

My generation and the ones before may have failed you, and the infrastructure for success glaringly absent – a persistent darkness in place of electricity, a stifling business environment that discourages enterprise and innovation, debilitating bureaucracy, inaccessible public officials who remain oblivious to your needs, an outdated education system in urgent need of reform– and the list goes on, but, if there’s anyone with the power to transform our continent and reshape our economic and social trajectory, it is YOU.

There is formidable power in your intellect and creativity, your talent and ingenuity are rare, and your resolve and determination against all odds, can drive great change. But most importantly, the greatest force is in your numbers.

Together, all 600 million of you that are under 30 years old, have the potential to be the most influential bloc on this continent. The indescribable influence that you can collectively wield, I hope that you soon fully understand and hopefully, deploy.

Today, I’d like to discuss the inescapable reality of politics with you. It has been a busy week of traveling from Lagos to Boston, to Los Angeles, and in a few hours to New York, to receive BCIU’s inaugural Dwight Eisenhower Entrepreneurship Award, but I thought to take time out this evening to share a few thoughts with you.

I have been inspired to share this with you after listening to my former professor at Harvard, Prof Michael Porter, whose session during our leadership council meeting of the Harvard Kennedy School Center of Public Leadership, was insightful, powerful, and very thought provoking.

His well-articulated argument emphasized that as a people we cannot afford to remain passive about politics. Though his reference region was America, there are strong parallels with our own situation in Africa.

The main root cause of our continent’s underlying failure to pull the majority of its citizens from the unyielding clutches of poverty is poor leadership, so then why do we continue to tell ourselves that politics exists in a realm outside our own realities?

Why do we refuse to engage in the political process of identifying and supporting visionary candidates, instead we remain at the mercy of political leadership committed to putting private interest ahead of public interest.

Leaders who are beholden to the ideology that political parties come before citizens. Leaders who are private gain-seeking actors.

What we desperately need is a continent-wide awakening. We must grow to become active citizens who are committed to getting involved. The system is not self-correcting, there are no market forces at play to ensure that it corrects itself.

It will require human actors – me and you – to identify and dismantle the structural impediments that fuel the status quo of bad leadership. We must address this issue both systemically and systematically. Our democracy has become very disconnected from being democratic, we must bring power back to the people.

We must reform the rules of our electoral processes to inject more transparency. We must transform politics from being an industry for a few interests, to being about the people and addressing the public needs. We must change the oligopoly nature of our politics today to being one for the majority.

The barriers to entry are high in politics, and very often, our best brains and talent are discouraged from running for office. We must dismantle these systems that keep away talented, individuals from joining the race.

We must open the door for generations knocking after us. We must take advantage of our demographic dividend, millions of young people who are ready to make a change. We must welcome this new generation of new ideas and we must democratize access to opportunity for all.

We must get more women involved in the process because when you empower women you empower communities. Structural reforms mean that no one individual can make this change alone, but with our collective voices and the realization that this is our time and that no one but us can save our continent, we can achieve change.

We can no longer outsource politics or governance to people we do not trust. We must understand the inextricable link between governance, economic growth and national security. To pretend that politics does not influence the entirety of our lives harms us more than it benefits us.

We must change the rules of the game. We must put up a coordinated front to reorient our values and bring power back to the people. Our leaders must be the best amongst us – those with the most transformative ideas and the capacity to deliver. .

It should be the best amongst us leading us in government, in the military, in our judiciary and of course the corporate sector. We must instill accountability in our processes, but also hold ourselves accountable.

We must play our own role in identifying and empowering those amongst us best placed to make this difference. To abscond from this duty is to be negligent of our responsibility to our continent.

It won’t be easy, but nothing good comes easy. A famous man once said you should learn to categorize all your problems in three sections: Easy, Impossible and HARD but doable. When it’s easy, you should give it to someone else to handle. When it’s impossible, you shouldn’t bother with it.

But when it’s hard but doable, you should go straight to work to make it happen. My fellow Africans, I appeal to you that though this task seems hard, it is entirely doable and we must begin this journey.

Let us rise to this challenge and begin to elect leaders who we trust in and are confident will help us realize the social and economic hopes of our continent.

Police Service of Northern Ireland has been outed on social media following a tweet by them which read “If you bump into that special someone under the mistletoe tonight, remember that without consent it is rape #SeasonsGreetings”, was posted to its 159,000 followers.

The tweet apparently drew criticism on Saturday, with hundreds mocking the force for ‘trivializing’ rape.

However the Police Force then pulled down the tweet after they were contacted by MailOnline. In a new message, posted this morning, the PSNI wrote:

“We posted a message on Twitter yesterday that some may have taken out of context but the message remains the same; when you are out socialising over the Christmas period, please remember without consent it is rape.”

This however, is not the first time PSNI has faced a backlash for social media postings, about sexual violence.

In March the Newry and Mourne division posted an image of a distressed woman under the caption ‘without consent it is rape’ and a message warning people not to ‘overindulge’.

Comrade Solomon Okoduwa, a member of the Edo States Task Force on Libya Returnees says the State has the highest number of Nigerians who are being repatriated from Libya, with indigenes of the state consisting about 70 per cent of the

He said the victims were subjected to dehumanising experience by their captors.

He also disclosed that about 560 Nigerians are expected to be repatriated into the country from Libya this week, while some of the female victims, who were recently evacuated from Libya, are said to be pregnant after being raped by their captors while in detention in Libya.

According to him, the expected Libya returnees consist of two groups of about 280 people each. He gave the expected date for the arrival of the Nigerians as Tuesday, December 5, 2017.

He stated that about 780 Libya returnees, who were indigenes of Edo State, had been brought to the state upon their arrival at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

He said that the state government was solely responsible for the rehabilitation and training of the Libya returnees, calling on local and international organisation to assist the government in rehabilitating the Libya returnees.

He said: “Apart from taking care of the returnees from the moment they land in Lagos, Edo State government pays children returnees N10,000; adults get N20, 000, while pregnant women get N25,000 each within the first three months of their arrival.

“We also provide accommodation, medicare, training and other important needs while they are with us.”
