By Ochereome Nnanna

COME this time next year, we will have our general elections. Like other states of the federation, the Zamfara State electorate will have an opportunity to pick a new helmsman to govern their state. This time, they should search very carefully and not make the mistake of electing governors that are famous for the wrong reasons.

Remember, it was from Zamfara State that Governor (now Senator) Ahmed Sani Yerima, in November 2000 suddenly and unilaterally launched full sharia as a means of reining in sexual immorality in the state. The effort became a wildfire throughout the Muslim North and most states there followed suit. Years later as a senator, Yerima went to Egypt and made news again by marrying a 13 year old child. Yerima not only completed his two terms, he has produced all governors since then. And he has been cooling his heels at the Senate for the third straight term. That shows his political sagacity in his locality, but with what result in terms of development in the state?

I ask this question because only in September last year, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, shocked many Nigerians when he disclosed that Zamfara State, with 14 local government areas and land mass of nearly 40,000 square kilometres and an estimated population of 3.8million had only 24 hospitals and 23 doctors. This means that one of the hospitals did not have a doctor!

A state like Zamfara is desperately in need of a chief executive officer with a progressive mindset who will sit down and tackle its daunting developmental challenges on a 24/7 basis. From the look of it, the state will have to wait for 2019 for a new beginning. It will probably pay them more if they look beyond the Ahmed Yerima political bandwagon. The man on the gubernatorial seat right now, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, like his political mentor, Yerima, is an oddball of sorts.

Remember sometime in April last year when meningitis struck in some parts of the North as usual during the heat of the dry season. It took the lives of hundreds of people and Zamfara was the worst hit. The state’s chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, blamed Governor Yari for not being “proactive” in combating the scourge. An angry Governor Yari released a shocker in reply to that. He said it was not his fault. It was “God” who sent the strain of meningitis that defied vaccination! According to him, whenever there is too much fornication “God” sends diseases that have no cure to punish the people. With this kind of mindset, how can anyone successfully govern a modern state?

Governor Yari has forever been accused by his critics of negligence of duty. They will tell you that he is hardly around to tackle problems. He is mostly in Abuja and either trampling the corridors of Aso Villa or warming his seat as the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, or cooling off somewhere outside the country, despite the fact that Zamfara is probably the fifth among the most highly insecure states in the country after Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba. The US Department of State in a security advisory in August 2016, listed Zamfara among the states American citizens must stay away from due to kidnappings, robberies, terrorism, killings or armed attacks.

The state has been scourged by bandits and cattle rustlers of late. Almost every part of the state is threatened, and deaths and destruction have been reported in Zurmi, Shinkafi, Maradun, Maru and the more remote and rural local governments where the presence of law enforcement agents is weak. Despite the fact that the Nigerian Army was dispatched in May 2016 to clear the bandits at Yan Mangu forest in Maru Local Government, they regrouped and made fiercer comebacks.

Two weeks ago, Governor Yari claimed that he got wind of an impending attack in Birane, Zurmi and alerted the security agencies. But of course, he was in Abuja. On Wednesday, 14th February 2018, the attacks began as predicted because apparently, no action was taken on the governor’s alert. The governor and the security agencies failed the people. While his people were being killed, Governor Yari chaired meetings of the NGF, attended the National Economic Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja and travelled to Daura in Katsina along with other APC governors to snap photos with President Buhari. He only returned three days after the attacks, in company of three other governors to perform condolence visits, only to take off again to a foreign country!

An enraged Senator Kabiru Marafa, who represents Zamfara Central has shouted himself hoarse that Governor Yari seems to see himself as the Chairman of the NGF rather than job he was given by the people. A state besieged by bloodthirsty criminals cannot afford to have an “absentee governor” as Yari is derisively referred to, especially on the social media.

In July 2016, the Zamfara State House of Assembly could no longer stomach Governor Yari’s proclivity for “abandoning” the state as they put it. They decided to have a “special sitting” to discuss the matter. A panic-stricken Governor Yari quickly got the Department of State Services, DSS, to arrest the Speaker, Sanusi Rikiji, his Deputy and all the principal officers for alleged plots to “impeach” him. In so doing, Yari effectively defanged and cowed the House and continued his junkets.

Right now, it is the Senate and House of Representatives that are doing the job of mobilising support for the security of the state. For the second time, President Buhari has ordered the military into Zamfara. How far can they go when the governor is hardly on seat to perform his primary duties? The last time they went there, the bandits beat a tactical with some of them pretending to have repented and surrendered arms. Once the military left, Zamfara returned to square one.

Abdulaziz Yari should hand over to his Deputy if he is tired of governing Zamfara State!

PoliticsDespite Security Concerns, NNPC To Return To Lake Chad For Oil Exploration by Blue3k2(op):
John Shiklam in Kaduna

Notwithstanding the security concerns in the North-east, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said that it will return to the Lake Chad Basin in Borno State to continue the search for crude oil.

The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, disclosed this Wednesday, saying that with the release of the staff of the corporation who were abducted while exploring for oil in the area, it will return “with full force” to continue with exploration activities.

Some lecturers of the University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) who were contracted by NNPC, were abducted last June by the Boko Haram terrorist group.

They did not regain their freedom till recently, following negotiations with the terrorists.
Speaking at the NNPC Day at the 39th edition of the Kaduna International Trade Fair, Baru said the corporation has also intensified exploration activities in the Benue trough.

According to him, the corporation will explore for oil in Benue, Nasarawa, Niger and Sokoto States, adding that with what the corporation has seen so far, it was sure of success.

He said the NNPC has been working tirelessly on the Lake Chad Basin, adding: “We thank the president (Muhammadu Buhari) for rescuing some of our lecturers that were involved in exploration in the region. We are going back to the Chad Basin with full force.”

He said although the oil and gas industry has been the main stay of the Nigerian economy, providing 95 per cent of the nation’s foreign exchange earnings, the major challenge in the country’s monoculture economy is that it exposes the nation to the vagaries of oil price volatility, which during a period of glut could spell doom for the country.
While emphasising on the need for diversification of the country’s economy, Baru said: “The feat achieved decades ago in mining, agriculture and commerce which even sustained the economy of each region of the country can be replicated if we re-channel the country’s productive sector.”

Baru pointed out that the NNPC was poised to provide the enabling environment for the nation to optimise its commercial, industrial and agricultural potential to attain a competitive edge in these sectors. “This is a commitment which we shall continue to abide by,” he said.

“To demonstrate our commitment, the NNPC has set up the Renewable Energy Division that is focused in not only developing solar and other renewable energy sources but also in the development of biofuels that are heavily dependent on agricultural produce as feedstock.

“The multiplier effect in such ventures are enormous: reviving and revitalising our agricultural sector, huge employment generation, significant contributions to power generation, high volume of animal feed, starch and by-products, in addition, biofuels will be blended at our refineries for petroleum products, which will significantly reduce the import of petroleum products into the country,” he noted.

He said the country needs to focus on undertaking a holistic policy action towards rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, which he acknowledged was not in a great shape.

He said the NNPC had taken steps to ensure that the hiccups witnessed recently in the distribution of petroleum products are overcome.

Some of the steps taken, according to him, include the full deployment and activation of a 24-hour real time fuel war room for the effective monitoring of fuel supply and distribution dynamics across the country; sustenance of 24 hours loading and sales operations in all depots and mega stations; and collaboration with and sharing information with the oil industry regulators and other agencies in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

PoliticsRe: Exposed! Akwa Ibom Environment Ministry In Alleged Fraud by Blue3k2(op): 5:12pm On Feb 27, 2018
Has anyone experienced what this article is talking about?
PoliticsExposed! Akwa Ibom Environment Ministry In Alleged Fraud by Blue3k2(op): 5:04pm On Feb 27, 2018
Despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s effort to ensure that corruption is reduced to the minimum, Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Environment under Dr Iniobong Essien is allegedly hiding under the guise of environmental sanitation to defraud and extort money from innocent and unsuspecting citizens and visitors to the State of their hard earned money.

The ministry’s mode of operation is to move about in buses with men and women adorned in green T-shirt and black trousers with the inscription, Akwa Ibom State ministry of Environment, during sanitation hours to forcefully abduct unsuspecting victims to their office at number 8 Eyo Eduok Street off Nkemba in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, thereby violating the human rights law which allow every citizen of the federal Republic of Nigeria freedom of movement.

Recounting her ordeal in the hands of the fierce looking abductors of the Ministry, on Saturday, February 24, 2018, Miss Esther Ime, a student told this reporter that she was on her way back from church when men numbering about five accosted her in a white Toyota Hiace bus along ring road, Mbierebe Junction and asked her where she was going to.

According to her, upon telling them that she was coming back from church where she went for sanitation and was on her way back which is a stone throw from the church to Continue the sanitation, the men ordered her to enter the bus for them to take her to the church to confirm if she was actually coming from the church for sanitation, only for them to turn their vehicle and drove straight to the Environmental Sanitation Court at 8 Eyo Eduok Street. On getting there, she said that she and others numbering about one hundred were forcefully pushed into the court room like cows.

Hear her, “when we went inside the court, one of the officials dressed in black and black suit came and addressed us, he told us to pay a fine of five thousand Naira (5000) for bail immediately or risk going to jail for offense we didn’t even know the charges.

“Those who were with money out of fear had to comply with his directives and pay the said amount after which they were given a slip that would allow them access outside the compound. According to her, some of the victims who were not with physical cash were asked to make their transactions through bank transfer to one First City Monument Bank account with account name Matthew D. Odiong and account number 3041408016.

Another victim, an elderly man in his late Seventies, Mr. Thomas Akpan recounting his ordeal, the same Saturday, said he was picked along Atiku Abubakar way while on his way to mortuary to retrieve the body of his only son, a graduate of University of Lagos, who died in a ghastly motor accident along Aba Ikot Ekpene Road on January 4 this year.

The visibly sober man said that he was released after he gave them the sum of three thousand naira, the only money that was left with him after much plea, adding that the money was meant for the mortuary attendants who were dressing his late son.

He said; “it shall never be well with those people for adding more pain to my pains. I lost my only Son two months ago, due to some financial constraints we were unable to buy a coffin to bury him immediately but just three days ago, a good Samaritan offered to get us a coffin that’s why we decided to bury him today to at least reduced the cost of mortuary which has accumulated over the months.

The only money I had with me was three thousand naira which was meant for the mortuary attendants who were dressing my late son. I had to trek so as to cut cost. It is not as if I didn’t do the sanitation, I did my sanitation very early in the morning. I’m deeply hurt, does it mean that they don’t have respect for old age”.

One of the ministry’s officials who was not comfortable with what the gang were into, who did not want her name on print, however, told this reporter the same Saturday, that; “it is the Ministry’s way of extorting money from people during sanitation. They always pray for last Saturday’s to come so that they can make money from their illegal business.”

She alleged that the loot is normally shared among officials of the ministry of Environment, alleging further that the Commissioner and other senior officials of the ministry are aware of the fraudulent practices and the act seems to be enjoying the Commissioner’s endorsement, which has become a norm in the ministry since the advent of the Udom Emmanuel’s administration.

A human rights Activist and lawyer, Barr. Inibehe Effiong said that the exercise as carried out by the Ministry’s official is illegal and a way to extort money from individuals who are ignorant of the law. He noted that the act violets a section of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria that allows freedom of movement of citizens.

When Radar Newspapers contacted the Commissioner for Environment, Iniobong Essien, for comment, last Saturday, February 24, 2018, he denied knowledge of the development.

He promised to investigate the matter and get back to the paper before press time. He got back to this paper on Sunday after failing to keep his promise, only to request for more details on the matter, which were given to him by this paper.

He, again, promised to get back to Radar newspapers on Monday, which made the paper to suspend her Monday’s publication, only for the Commissioner to fail to keep to his promise.

Politics2016 Church Collapse: APC Criticises Akwa Ibom Govt For Not Releasing Report by Blue3k2(op): 1:38am On Feb 27, 2018
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, has criticised the state government for refusing to release a white paper on the report of the judicial commission of inquiry on the church collapse that killed 27 people and injured 37 in 2016.

The state government said on Wednesday in a statement that, “The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice has been mandated to commence the process of taking appropriate actions against all persons found culpable in the church building collapse.”

The statement, issued by the Commissioner for Information, Charles Udoh, added that “All cases of proven professional negligence will be dealt with decisively within the ambit of the law.”

The APC said the government statement did not offer succour to families who lost their loved ones in the Reigners Bible Church collapse or take specific action to prevent such tragedy from happening again.

The party condemned the government’s position on the matter and called on the victims’ families and the Akwa Ibom people to reject it.

“There are clear indications that this government cannot be trusted to tell the truth,” the APC said in a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Edet Bassey.

Mr. Bassey described the government’s statement as “a prescription designed to deceive the people and protect the culprits”.

He said it would have served public interest if the Akwa Ibom State Government had deployed the Coroner’s Law in the church collapse, just like the Lagos State Government did in 2014 when a guest-house within the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed, killing more than 100 persons.

“Whoever advised Deacon Emmanuel (governor) cannot feign ignorance of the Coroner’s Law but knowingly opted for a Commission of Enquiry in order to protect hidden interests and subvert the course of justice,” the spokesperson said.

“Under the Commission of Enquiry law of the state, evidence obtained from and in the course of the sittings of the commission are inadmissible against anyone in civil or criminal proceedings.

“It is reported on good authority that the commission indicted government for failing to properly exercise its regulatory functions during the construction of the collapsed church building. As expected and customary with this government such an indictment cannot find space in the public domain,” Mr. Bassey said.

The state government is yet to react to the APC’s criticism.

Special economic zones are not determined by the central government. In a federal system, the economc developement of each region/state is entirely in the hands of the region/state. The only time when the federal government comes in is, if the projects seeks a loan/capital infusion from the central government who then gives conditions to be met by the loan seeker before the loan is approved.

What a tragedy of nation!
You are mistaken. Special economic zones are determined by federal government because the tax incentives are only possible because the government decided not to collect. The other perks are only possible because they gave the ok.

Take OGFZ they allow complete loads of tax benefits, no quota for expatriate employees, fast tracked immigration etc. These can't be done by a state obviously. Every example I know from USA- Singapore had federal intervention. I'm sure Switzerland did as well.

PoliticsEnyimba Industrial City: Abia Seeks Presidential Approval by Blue3k2(op): 8:22am On Feb 26, 2018
The Project Consultant, Enyimba Industrial City, Chief Darl Uzu, has said that arrangements are in top gear to get the President’s approval for an Export Processing Zone licence for the project.

Uzu, who disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said there might be delays in realising the project because of its nature which would take a long time to achieve.

He said that the handlers submitted a Free-Trade Zone application to Nigerian Export Processing Zone Authority (NEPZA) which had been processed and passed to the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment for approval.

“We are going on to follow-up on that because he has to make recommendation to the President who would take the project to the Federal Executive Council for approval.

“Every other thing is coming up. Aside the infrastructure, we are putting all things together. The likes of Dubai have joined us and Group Five of South Africa and AFC have come out to show interest.

“World Bank also has a stake but what happens with World Bank is that you have to get the private sector just like a guarantor. Anything you are doing has to be bankable for World Bank to come in.

“But we have been engaging them. We have had a meeting with them in Abuja here and we have also had a meeting with them in Washington DC in November 2017,” he said.

Uzu said that the proposed commencement of work at the site had been shifted to February.

NAN reports that Abia Government had earlier said in December 2017 that work on the project was billed to start in January 2018.

He said that although the project involved a Singaporean Urban, Industrial and Infrastructure firm (Surbana Jurong), they would work with local town planners.

Uzu said that he would leave for Singapore sometime in February to finalise all the design arrangements with the company.

He said that the Federal Government had approved N5 billion to support the Enyimba Industrial City project in the 2018 budget.

Uzu further said that the city, spanning Ugwulagbo, Ukwa East and Ukwa West areas, would connect South-South and South-East states.

He said the project was expected to provide jobs for one million citizens following massive industrial development and expanded business opportunities coming with it.

NAN reports that although the Abuja office of World Bank, in a message signed by its Public Affairs Officer, Olufunke Olufon and sent to NAN, said “Kindly note no such project exists”, Abia Government is working hard to realise the project because of its huge benefits. (NAN)

If the victims or law firm were smart they would file a class action lawsuit and get pay day. Join everyone who could possibly be involved and get paid. The firm that takes case can simply get 20% -25% of overall settlement since they probably won't be paid up front retainer fee.

I'm interested to see the government's response.
PoliticsDapchi Parents Release Names Of 105 Schoolgirls Abducted By Boko Haram FULL LIST by Blue3k2(op): 12:26am On Feb 25, 2018
Parents of schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in Dapchi secondary school in Yobe state have released the names of 105 girls missing by Saturday.

The parents said they were the only source of credible data, dismissing figures provided by the state government as false.

The parents, who have created a group to collate names of the missing girls, advised the governor of Yobe state to stop listening to “fake data” given to him by security operatives.

“Governor Ibrahim Gaidam must call us to a meeting so that we can give him a firsthand data on the number of our daughters that have gone missing since the attack on Monday,” said Mr. Bashir Manzo, who acts as the chairman of the Forum of Missing Dapchi Schoolgirls Parents.

The governor had on Friday, while hosting governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje, said 86 girls were missing after the attack on Monday.

Mr. Manzo, who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES by phone, said they created a forum to check such “misrepresentation”.

“We have decided to form a forum not for any other purpose other than seeing that we also contribute to how our missing daughters can be rescued and brought to us safely,” said Mr. Manzo.

“So our forum has since been collating the bio-data of all the girls that are not accounted for. And to achieve the best result, we do not take information from any third person or through phone call except by physical presentation by the father or mother of the missing schoolgirl.

“When any parent come here to meet us, he has to give us his name and the name of his daughter; her class and then we also collect his phone number along the name of his town and local government area.

“So far, from what we have collated as at today Saturday 23rd February 2017, we have a total of 105 schoolgirls who have not been seen since the attack of Dapchi on Monday 19th February. This list did not come from the school management or any government source but (was) collated by us from the parents of the girls.

“As far as we are concerned, the governor is still being fed with fake information about these poor girls. Our major concern now, is for us to have a direct meeting with the governor of Yobe state so that we could tell him the home truth about our daughters that have gone missing.

“Whatever report that is given to him, (if) they don’t tally with what we have, amounts to fake information. He needs to know that truth and only we the parents that can confirm it to him that our daughters who are students of GGSTC Dapchi had been kidnapped by Boko Haram.

“From the feelers we are getting it thus seem the governor is still not been made to understand that these girls were abducted; he is still being made to believe that they had gone missing because they ran into the bush and have not been able to find their ways back to town.

“The fact of the matter is that all those that fled into the bush had been brought back to the school on Tuesday, and a roll call was taken after which they had all gone home to meet their parents.

“So far, we have a total of 105; we don’t know if there could be more of them,” he said.

Mr. Bashir said his teenage daughter, Fatima Bashir, a Junior Secondary III student, is amongst the missing girls.

Boko Haram gunmen on Monday attacked Dapchi town of Yobe state and went away with students of the town’s girls’ secondary school.

Neither the military nor the management of the school have given yet an accurate figure of the schoolgirls that were abducted.

The minister of information, Lai Mohammed, visited Dapchi on Thursday where he told the media that the federal government still needs “some few days” to confirm the figures with the parents.

PoliticsRe: Akwa Ibom Govt Refuses To Release Report On Church Collapse That Killed 27 by Blue3k2(op): 12:08am On Feb 25, 2018
This is completely wrong. The report dhould be released for public to see because the point of these special investigations. Oh well this corrupt behavior only flies because the population enables them. If possible these should use FOIA request to get them to release documents.

Akwa Ibom people are more enlightened and intelligent,” he said.
These guys are certified idiots and extremely passive. They're running out of collapsing building like Indiana Jones and have not sued. The issue will probably be swept under carpet because only a select few have memories longer than 6 months.
PoliticsAkwa Ibom Govt Refuses To Release Report On Church Collapse That Killed 27 by Blue3k2(op): 11:44pm On Feb 24, 2018
The Akwa Ibom State government has made it clear it will not release a white paper on its inquiry on the church collapse that killed 27 people and injured 37 in 2016.

The Reigners Bible Church, Uyo, which was under construction, caved in during a ceremony to consecrate the church founder, Akan Weeks, as a bishop.

The Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel, who was a special guest at the ceremony, narrowly escaped unhurt.

Seven months after the commission of inquiry, headed by a retired judge, Umoekoyo Essang, submitted its report, the state government said on Wednesday in a statement that, “The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice has been mandated to commence the process of taking appropriate actions against all persons found culpable in the church building collapse.”

The statement, issued by the Commissioner for Information, Charles Udoh, added that “All cases of proven professional negligence will be dealt with decisively within the ambit of the law.”

The statement took many people by surprise because of the expectation that the report was going to be made public soon.

Those who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES expressed anger against the government’s decision not to release a white paper on the commission’s report.

“The statement by the commissioner is pointless,” said Inibehe Effiong, a human rights lawyer, who has been campaigning for the release of the report.

“It does not resolve the questions which the people of the state have been asking on the outcome of the investigation by the commission of inquiry.

“The procedure is that when government constitute a judicial commission of inquiry, upon the conclusion of the assignment, it is expected that a white paper be issued by the government wherein the government would state the recommendations that it accepts and those that it rejects, and a clear statement on actions that would be taken in respect of the recommendations,” Mr. Effiong told PREMIUM TIMES
.

Mr. Effiong accused the government of having a hidden interest in the report.

“The government has an interest in that report which it does not want to come out openly to say.

“If the government is interested in the truth, why not release the report. In fact, given the scale of the tragedy that took place, what stops the government from publishing the report on the internet. I am not even talking about the white paper, I mean the report itself.

“I am saddened that the government has not deemed it fit to, at least, honour the souls of those who lost their lives,” said the lawyer, who hinted that he may sue the government on the matter.

Victor Iyanam, a lawyer and a former commissioner for justice in the state, said if the government knew that they were not going to release a white paper on the commission’s report, they should have simply used the police to investigate, arrest and prosecute those culpable.

“Let us know those who have been indicted by the commission,” Mr. Iyanam said. “That is the transparent thing to do.

“Let the government not give the impression that the whole essence of setting up the judicial commission of inquiry was to sweep things under the carpet.”

Another lawyer in the state, Nsikak Akai, said the government’s statement succeeded in keeping the people in the dark on what really led to the church collapse, apart from the fact that it did not mention names of persons to be prosecuted which the people would also want to know.

He said the government’s position was “wrong” and “totally unacceptable”.

“Akwa Ibom people are more enlightened and intelligent,” he said.

Mr. Akai said people who feel aggrieved over the government position could approach the court to compel it to not only release a white paper but initiate criminal proceedings against those culpable.

He said they could also team up to file a civil suit, seeking damages from the Reigners Bible Church.

Franklyn Isong, a journalist and a member of the Civil Liberty Organisation, CLO, has been among those putting pressure on the government “to do the right things” as far the church collapse is concerned.

Mr. Isong expressed shock over the government action. He said the human right community and the people would continue to agitate for Governor Udom Emmanuel administration to take proper actions on the matter.

“A press statement from the government is not enough.

“The government claimed that they have paid all verified outstanding medical bills of the victims of the church collapse. The question I want to ask the government is: how many victims were affected and which hospitals treated them? How many survived and how many died? These are tax payer’s money,” he said.

When PREMIUM TIMES contacted the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Udoh, he said there was no law that says a government must release a white paper on the report of the commission.

The state Commissioner for Justice, Uwemedimo Nwoko, declined comment on the matter.

Such fun to see them sad over good news. cheesy
Why do you still bother? The government showed it's not above lying so people are right to be skeptical about information presented. They made Yobe state government look crazy because of false reports. The military captures a top commander every 6 months. Look at the Google headlines. The cockroaches will get a new commander. The news is good but more work will need to be done to stomp them out.

Troops in Borno killed five Boko Haram insurgents and captured a top commander of the group in the ongoing operation in Sambisa Forest and the Lake Chad basin, the army said.

Onyeama Nwachukwu, a colonel and Deputy Director, Army Public Relations of Operation Lafiya Dole, in a statement in Maiduguri, said troops also rescued three civilians, recovered vehicles and high calibre ammunition in various operations in the past two days.

Mr. Nwachukwu said on Thursday, the troops engaged and neutralised a number of fleeing insurgents while attempting to escape the military blocking position in one of the cleared enclaves ‘Sabil-Huda’, deep in Sambisa Forest.

He said the troops also recovered one G-III rifle magazine, one life jacket, a light Machine Gun metal link, four rounds of Anti-Aircraft ammunition, four rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and three rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

“Unfortunately, two soldiers were injured in the process; they had been evacuated by the Nigerian Air Force and are responding to treatment,” he said.

Mr. Nwachukwu said the troops on Friday launched offensive targeting a terrorist’s hideouts up ‘CAMP ZAIRO’, and neutralised a number of insurgents in spite of initial damage caused to their Armoured Fighting Vehicle by Improvise Explosive Device (IED) planted beneath the ground.

He said the troops killed five insurgents, wounded several others and recovered ammunition at a hideout in Parisu, Sambisa Forest.

Mr. Nwachukwu disclosed that troops of 151 Battalion in conjunction with “7 Division Support Group’ have also cleared nine terrorists’ hideouts along Frigi-Izza area.

The director added that the troops also recovered one motorcycle, two bicycles, 10 bicycle tyres, one bicycle, three Boko Haram flags, a solar panel, five drums filled with grain, two mattresses, two grinding machines, three bags of metal scraps, two motorcycle tyres and two underground grain silos.

Also recovered are one AK-47 Rifle Magazine, 1 dummy rifle, a round of 12.7mm ammunition, 12 empty cases of 7.62mm ammunition, assorted IED materials and a tool box.

According to him, the Air Task Force of Operation LAFIYA DOLE provided air cover for the land troops in the conduct of the operations.
