BusinessThe Killing Of 40 And More Companies by Blue3k2(op): 5:37pm On Feb 03, 2018
By Eric Teniola

As at 1979, when the Army handed over power, there were 40 companies operating in the country. These companies, with their locations and the percentage of federal government shareholding in them, were as follows: Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company Limited (35 percent); Nkalagu Cement Company Limited, Anambra (10 percent); Steyr Nigeria Ltd., Bauchi (35 percent); Ashaka Cement Company Ltd., Bauchi (30 percent); New Nigeria Salt Company Ltd., Bendel (100 percent); Delta Steel Company Ltd., Bendel (100 percent); Nigerian National Shrimp Co. Ltd., Bendel (51 percent); Nigerian National Fish Co. Ltd., Bendel (66 percent); Benue Cement Company Ltd., Benue (39 percent); Calabar Cement Company Ltd., Cross River (40 percent); Nigerian Newsprint Manufacturing. Co. Ltd., Cross River (80 percent); Serwood Industries Ltd., Cross River (20 percent); and Opobo Boat-Yards Ltd., Cross River (43.75 percent).

Also, Savana Sugar Company Ltd., Gongola (72 percent); Aba Textile Mills Ltd., Imo (70 percent); Electricity Meters Company Ltd., Kaduna (80 percent); Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Ltd., Kaduna (35 percent); Batagarawa Steel Rolling Mill, Kaduna (100 percent); Super-phosphate Fertiliser Co., Kaduna (100 percent); North Brewery Ltd., Kano (50 percent); National Trucks Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Kano (35 percent); Nigeria Sugar Company Ltd., Kwara (19.7 percent); Ajaokuta Steel Co. Ltd., Kwara (100 percent); Nigeria Paper Mills Ltd., Kwara (100 percent); Lafiagi Sugar Company Ltd., Kwara (90 percent); and Nigeria Yeast & Alcohol Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Kwara (51 percent).

Equally, there was Flour Mills of Nigeria, Lagos (12 percent); West Africa Distillers Ltd., Lagos (100 percent); Volkswagen of Nigeria Ltd., Lagos (35 percent); Nichemtex Industries Ltd., Lagos (9.23 percent); Sunti Sugar Company Ltd., (90 percent); West African Portland Cement Co. Ltd., Ogun (20 percent); National Salt Company Ltd., Ogun (100 percent); Nigeria National Paper Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Ogun (70 percent); Nigeria Transformers Ltd., Ogun (65 percent); Nigeria-Romania Wood Industries Ltd., Ondo (25 percent); Leyland Nigeria Ltd., (35 percent); Oshogbo Steel Rolling Mill, Osun (100 percent); Jos Steel Rolling Mill, Plateau (100 percent); and Sokot Cement Company Ltd., Sokoto (31 percent).

If I may ask, how many of these companies or industries are still operating today? The truth is that most of them have ceased to operate. Why? MISMANAGEMENT. Am aware that President Muhammadu Buhari is preparing to pour money into re-activating the Ajaokuta Steel Company. But what about others? But the story is not the same with some foreign companies operating in Nigeria established years ago. Let’s take a look. May & Baker was the first pharmaceutical company to be founded in Nigeria, having been incorporated in 1944. Many of the company’s leading brands are house-hold names in ethical pharmaceutical and family health-care products. The company maintains technical and management services agreement with Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the world and a major stakeholder. May & Baker Nigeria’s leading brands include M&B Tixylix (a paediatric cough medicine), Oruvail (a anti-rheumatic), Peflacine (a antibiotic), Flagyl (a anti-infective) and vaccines. Over 75 percent of its sales are derived from human pharmaceuticals, manufactured at its Ikeja, Lagos factory. Its suppliers cut across indigenous and foreign companies. The major off-shore suppliers are Rhone-Poulenc Rorer SA of France and Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Exports Limited of United Kingdom. At the local level, the major suppliers include Smurfit Cases Nigeria Limited, Avon Crown Caps Limited and Guinea Glass Limited.

Paterson Zochonis & Company Limited of Manchester, England commenced business in Nigeria in 1899 as a traditional West African merchant. The major Landmark in PZ’s development in Nigeria came after the Second World War, when the company acquired P.B. Nicolas & Company Limited, a small soap factory in Aba in 1948. The name was changed to Alagbon Industries Limited in 1953 and then to Associated Industries Limited in 1960. The name was finally changed to Paterson Zochonis Industries Plc in 1976. Today, since its incorporation in Nigeria, the PZ group of companies now spans a wide range of manufacturing and commercial activities scattered across Nigeria.

Nigerian Bottling Plc’s path to greatness began in a modest way in November 22, 1951, when it was incorporated as a private limited company, to establish and operate factories for the bottling and distribution of soft drinks in Nigeria. It rolled out its first cases of Coca-Cola in 1953 from one plant bottling operation in Oyingbo, Lagos State. Since then, NBC and Coca Cola have become synonymous in Nigeria and this dynamic company is the largest bottler of soft hard drinks in Nigeria, and a bottling giant in Africa.

The Nigerian Breweries Plc, the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria, was incorporated in 1946 and recorded a landmark when the first bottle of Star Lager Beer rolled off the bottling lines in its Lagos brewery in June 1949. This was followed by the building of the Aba Brewery, which was commissioned in 1957, the Kaduna Brewery in 1963, and Ibadan Brewery in 1982. In September 1993, the company acquired its fifth Brewery in Enugu. Thus, from its humble beginning in 1946, the company now has five breweries from which its high quality products are bottled and then distributed to all parts of this country. Nigeria Breweries Plc has a portfolio of six high quality brands: Star Lager Beer; Gulder Lager Beer; Maltina, with its winsome strawberry, exotic fruits and classic varieties; Legends Extra Stout, Amstel Malta; and Schweppes range of carbonated soft drinks (Schweppes Bitter Lemon, Schweppes Tonic and Schweppes Soda Water). Together, the brands have facilitated its strong leadership position in the total brewed products market in Nigeria.

Julius Berger Nigeria Plc began operation in Nigeria in 1965 with the construction of Eko Bridge. It was incorporated on February 18, 1970 as a civil engineering firm. The competence with which the company executes contracts won the confidence of Nigerians. A few prominent works executed by the company include: Third Apapa Wharf Extension and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos, Sapele and Warri Ports in Delta State. Others are the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Apapa Oshodi Expressway, Lagos Inner Ring Road, Lagos Eti-Osa Road Phase I and II, Amuwo Odofin Road, Lekki Peninsula Road Scheme I, Igbokuta-Imota Road. It also built the Ajaokuta Road Bridge in Kogi State, Jebba Road Bridge in Kwara State, Ethiope and Jamieson Bridge at Sapele, New Carter Bridge with its West Ramp, Third Mainland Bridge (Oworonsoki End) and Opebi Bridge in Lagos.

Lever Brothers Nigeria Plc, the longest surviving manufacturing outfit in Nigeria has seen the best, as well as worst in Nigeria’s economy over the last 74 years. The company came into existence in 1923 through the efforts of a pioneering entrepreneur, Lord Leverhulme, who rather than taking palm oil from Nigeria to make soap in England and shipping it back to sell to us, decided to manufacture the soap right here where the palm oil is produced. It should therefore not be surprising that Lever Brothers has since been in the forefront of local raw material development and backward integration. Lever Brothers Nigeria PLC was re-classified as a conglomerate a few years ago. The company started as a soap company and expanded to non-soapy detergents. The company later went into foods, producing table margarines and bakery fats and eventually went into personal products, producing dental care products, creams, jeellies and lotions.

Nestle Foods Nigeria Plc is a leading food manufacturing and marketing company renowned for its top quality products. The company began simple trading operations in Nigeria in 1961. The company’s manufacturing facilities, located at Agbara Industrial Estate in Ogun State, produce Nido milk, Cerelac, Nutrend and Cerelac Chocolate – baby weaning foods; Golden Morn, an instant breakfast cereal; Milo, Nescao, Chocolim – beverage drinks; Choco Milo – chocolate sweet; Maggi cubes, Maggi Super Onion Spices, Maggi Chicken, Maggi Crayfish, Maggi Mutton Tomatoe and Maggi Pepper Soup – kitchen seasonings; and Maggi 2-Minute Noodles.

These are companies operating in Nigeria that have expatriates connections. Some faced certain problems a few years ago, including Guiness Nigeria Limited, but they have since bounced back.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s transmission grid covers an estimated maximum 40% of the country by Blue3k2(op): 5:28pm On Feb 03, 2018
I overlooked this news but it's pretty nice arrangement. The big part that Interesting is 60% of nation isn't connected to the transmission grid.
PoliticsNigeria’s transmission grid covers an estimated maximum 40% of the country by Blue3k2(op):
The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, on Wednesday announced the issuance of N10 billion to a private group to enable it expand its captive electricity generation capacity.

The issue is the first infrastructure bond facilitated by the agency in the country’s debt capital markets.

The inaugural guaranteed bond will connect infrastructure as an asset class to the country’s long-term local currency debt capital markets.

The issue was facilitated by InfraCredit, an infrastructure credit enhancement facility established by NSIA in collaboration with GuarantCo, a private infrastructure development group.

A statement by NSIA sent to PREMIUM TIMES said InfraCredit, along with Viathan Group through Viathan Funding Plc, accessed the 16 per cent Series 1 Senior Guaranteed Fixed Rate bond from the Nigerian debt capital markets. It will become due by 2027.

Viathan Funding Plc is a special purpose vehicle established to raise debt capital, with Renaissance Capital (Nigeria) as the Lead Issuing House and Lead Bookrunner for the transaction.

The bond, the first corporate facility to be successfully accessed from the Nigerian debt market for infrastructure development, has a 10 year tenor, extending the yield curve for corporate debt issuances.

Backed by the InfraCredit irrevocable and unconditional guarantee, the bond is accorded ‘AAA’ long term national scale rating by Global Credit Ratings, GCR, and Agusto & Co.

The net proceeds of the bonds will be utilised by Viathan Group to expand its electricity generation capacity by 7.5MW; construct a 104,800 standard cubic metres per day Compressed Natural Gas, CNG plant and refinance short term bank debts.

The Managing Director of NSIA, Uche Orji, said by leveraging on InfraCredit’s financial strength and high credit ratings, the Viathan Bonds was subscribed by 16 institutional investors, comprising at least 12 pension funds and two insurance companies.

Already, the investors’ commitment has exceeded the total issue size (N10 billion) by N500 million.

This translates to about 105 per cent subscription, with the Viathan Bonds priced at an 82 basis points, bps, premium to the 10-year sovereign benchmark bond, using the 60-day yield average adapted for the book-build exercise.

The ‘AAA’ rated bonds would be listed on Financial Markets Dealers Quotations over-the-counter, FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange.

NSIA said Viathan Group develops and operates captive and embedded (off-grid) power solutions for governmental, commercial and residential off-takers across Nigeria, using natural gas as fuel with a combined generation capacity of 50MW.

Although Nigeria’s aggregate electricity demand is estimated at about 160,000 MW, the country’s installed capacity stands at just over 12,000 MW.

While the country’s current power generation capacity is estimated at 7,000 MW, only about 5,155 MW is actually available to consumers due to inadequate transmission infrastructure. Nigeria’s transmission grid is estimated to cover a maximum 40 per cent of the country,

Viathan Engineering Limited CEO, Ladi Sanni, said the success of the bond issuance would have significant implications on the group’s expansion strategy, particularly its foray into the development of the country’s power infrastructure.

“With 10-year funding at relatively lower borrowing cost, Viathan Group is better positioned to efficiently execute its capacity expansion plan in captive power generation and increase its diversification into gas processing,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of InfraCredit, Chinua Azubike, said the company was pleased to support Viathan Group’s business expansion programme in the captive power market, by enabling them raise long term local currency funding with favourable terms.

“The success of our maiden guarantee transaction is a significant milestone, demonstrating strong investor confidence, diverse investor base and market acceptance of our credit standing and ‘AAA’ guarantee.

“This transaction will create a new investable asset class to match the long-term maturity structure of pension fund and insurance companies’ assets,” he said.

The Chairman, InfraCredit, Uche Orji said, “the success of this transaction aligns with the overall objective of InfraCredit’s sponsors, the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and GuarantCo, in establishing InfraCredit to serve as a catalyst for facilitating private investment into infrastructure from pension funds and other long-term private institutional investors in order to support sustained economic growth in Nigeria.”

Possible, but I think the north has been thinking about the eventualities of a breakup scenario. They have suddenly become more aggressive about oil discovery also. The also planning a power plants for Abuja, Kaduna and Kano Through NNPC. Plus they must have realized that their population growth has negated any free flow of oil money in the past 60 years.
Your theory makes sense to me. I concur with bold. I would to add the sane can be said about Nigeria as a whole. I compare it to UAE they moved past oil. They could have been like other gulf states but had different policy in mind.

PoliticsIGP Directs Police Commissioners To Disarm Militias In States by Blue3k2(op): 3:10pm On Feb 01, 2018
…Silent on herdsmen
By Joseph Erunke
ABUJA – THE Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has directed all state Commissioners of Police to immediately disarm militias in the various states they are in charge of.

This was even as he warned state governments against arming militias to protect citizens of their states, saying no law in the land empowers them to do such.

He said the Nigerian constitution made it clear that only the security agencies were responsible for carrying arms and ammunition, vowing that those who violate the law in whatever guise would be dealt with accordingly.

Idris, who gave the directive Thursday, a meet with Commissioners of Police and officers above, was however, silent on whether the same applies to herdsmen, who have been not only been accused of carrying sophisticated weapons but also being responsible for killings across the country for over some time now.

Details coming….

And what's wrong with my submission? I sampled my first comment already. Juxtapose them and stop that twisting oe words. Plus I expect you to be able to sort out my stance on the project and the article itself.

Some of my points;
-It is still a long term project.
-The said article still has the coloration of desperate propaganda.
-Refineries are still shorter term projects compared to the project and
-Our raw material (crude oil) is still being underutilized & a more logical investment for the FG to me.

State your points clearly and stop fooling around.
How can I be twisting words when your comment right there. You talk about government investment in refineries like they haven't screwed up that. They already had private sector operators stepping in so it's better they don't. Dangote, petrolex and who every serious about modular refinery. I guess decades of TAM and talks with mapet haven't changed mind. The 4 NNPC refineries are doomed.

• you said article propaganda but they gave both sides to story. (Mostly because you didn't read it)
• you brought up Boko Haram when project eould be at tributary of Congo Congo river. Is bolo Haram in Central African Republic?
• it's a long term project so what.
• you also said it's propaganda to get middle belt minorities to vote for buhari even they they don't directly benefit from project. The would be more cinverned with herdsmen security issues.

Your conspiracy theory didn't make sense then and now. You read same thing and suddenly had change if heart. If you think article talking about project was propaganda then you didn't want project.

It was informed by the tone of the writer. I have always supported every region playing to their strength as against the blind crude focus.
These were also your comments. If you felt it's propaganda project I doubt you were for it. It's stil weird you felt writer was bias when they gave every side of story. I remember two opposing hyper links. Then other reasons this could fall apart.

Does this author's tone makes everything more viable? It's weird you read you read same thing and have 2 different opinions. This author told you less information funny enough.

Desyner:
If what you post here is beyond your brain, there is a romance section.
We have oil already, that's quality raw material that can add value being sold to fund a projects that's beyond the FG's control. What's the wisdom in it? To me it is a propaganda article void of realistic, medium term prospect.
PoliticsRe: UNESCO, FG Partner To Launch Project to refill Lake Chad by Blue3k2(op):
Lol Nigerians going to be mad when they find out what refillimg would entail financially. They needs to people utilize water efficiently. The best way would be tradeable water market. Look up Australia if you want I mean.

Then in Nigeria nobody paying attention to water use by farmers. It's basically one part environment annother part tragedy of commons.

These are some of the things Buhari should be channelling his fast-depleting energy towards instead of chasing phantom oil and gas in the north.
What made u change your mind. This is same transaqua project you were staunchly opposed to. Oh a fun fact I learned researching project. If this project happens it would be biggest water transfer project ever assuming they're planning on diverting 2% of Congo river.

News Summary:

●…To use scientific and cultural methods to restore river Basin

●…Partnership to be done through Water Resources Ministry

●…To strengthen capacities of member states of commission for three years

●… Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Niger and Nigeria are the member states

●…To launch BIOPALT  Feb. 15 and 16…BIOPALT to be funded by ADB for three years

●…Discussions between Buhari, Ex-DG UNESCO Ms. Irina Bokova

The UN Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on Wednesday said it is partnering with the Federal Government to use scientific and cultural methods to restore the Lake Chad basin.

The partnership will be done through the Ministry of Water Resources to launch BIOPALT, a project targeted at scientifically and culturally restoring the basin.

Dr. Osuji Otu, the National Programme Officer for Sciences of UNESCO disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

BIOPALT project aims to strengthen the capacities of the member states of the Lake Chad Basin Commission – Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Niger and Nigeria for three years.

The project is to safeguard and sustainably manage the hydrological, biological and cultural resources of the Lake Chad basin across their borders in order to support poverty reduction and promote peace.

“Presently, we are having consultation with partners which is aimed at launching BIOPALT in Feb. 15 and 16.

“This is a Lake Chad project that restores the depleted basin using scientific and cultural methods to restore peace in Lake Chad as well as sustainable development within the basin.

“The BIOPALT is the launching of the special project funded by African Development Bank which will last for three years and benefiting five countries- Chad, Nigel, Cameroon, Nigeria and Congo.

“It has been launched in other countries. Once it is launched here, we can start the project implementation within the Lake Chad basin for the next three years,” Otu said.

According to him, the consultation meeting involves lots of partners working together toward the implementation of the project when it is launched.

The restoration of the Lake Chad basin became necessary following discussions between President Muhammadu Buhari and UNESCO’s former Director General, Ms. Irina Bokova in August 2016.

The discussion was on issues of mutual interest toward attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and to reflect on the future of the lake.

At that time, President Buhari called for UNESCO’s assistance to organise an international conference to reflect on the future of the Lake and support the preservation of the surrounding environment.

Buhari in Dec. 2017 approved the conference to be hosted in Abuja with the objective of creating global awareness on the socio-economic and environmental challenges arising from the shrinkage of the Lake Chad.

Other concerns to be discussed at the conference are threat to livelihoods including insecurity with a view to developing a comprehensive programme for action to save the lake from extinction.

The conference is expected to also discuss and develop consensus on the different options to restore Lake Chad, including the Inter-Basin Water Transfer project from the Ubangi River in Central Africa to the Lake Chad.

In fact the Flash herdsmen issue makes it imperative to protect aboriginal rights.
Over run how what math are you doing to come to this conclusion. I can name a bunch of places where it works like India. We would have to assume these groups would move to these other spots for a reason. Let's say there's 32 million Igbos what move to Benue or Akwa Ibom in vast quantities like that.

i can GUARANTEE everyone that you are Igbo....the ONLY tribe that carry this indigineship thing for head. Whats wrong with you guys dragging indigineship? Are you not proud of una areahuh?africa is NOT America! It is in africa that you see totally different custom, language, mode of dressing, dialect, religion in just 30 kilometers from different towns. Our customs are so unique compared to america hence its preservation. If you no like am, move to your zone!
Well you are wrong I'm not igbo. It's funny people assume I must belong to certain tribe st any different time depend on what opinion i hold on a subject. Im Yoruba one day, Igbo the next or Hausa annother. You should know opinions don't determine tribal affiliation.

I do like my place it doesn't change fact having it legally enshrined is stupid just like your argument and assumptions. America is great to hence why you guys run over here for better life or die on boats to get to Europe. Anyway your rant was nothing but tribal chest beating devoid of logic.

The fact is residency is better considering we're one Nigeria. It more logical to go off of residence because it makes more sense to run for office in the place you live in. You living and doing business in Lagos then running for office in Edo becsuse your ancestor lived their in nonsense.

What happened when you marry a Ghanaian?because we all know that woman is another peoples property, let me use that word.
To answer your question the woman would become a Nigerian citizen. The inverse is not true for men. I assume state of origin transfers from man (Consult lawyer on that part)

hammer6F:
In actual fact, both exist at sametime. Human beings are constantly migrating in search of greener pastures. That was why states where created to force us to settle on a particular land permanently. It is similar to a woman being an indigene of her father place of origin but yet share same origin with her husband. It is complimentary rather than opposition/competing.
I can't agree with that since I don't think a person who doesn't spend time in place he want to govern should run. Those type of connections like origin are historical in my opinion.

My last question would be what should employers base their quota hiring on. You know have conflicting choices of residence or origin. It will make quota hiring more complicated.

State of Origin is not the problem here.

The problem is the law failure to recognize State of Residence.

People should share an equal right with indigene in their state of residence.
Can both exist at same time. Second should they? My cousins live in Lagos their entire lives should the ne able to wake up one afternoon and run for office where the Akwa Ibom? To be president in USA you have to be resident 14 years in United States living your whole life outside and say you want to run country.

Now you are talking.
Another example I can add is office holding. Hillary Clinton is from Illinois but she became a new York Senator because lived their long enough to qualify. Only weirdos are fixated about where their ancestors are from. Why should that even be a question for an employer to ask.

Oga go and have a seat.
1) You didn't properly understand my post.
2) You and everybody like you who support sectarianism are pushing Nigeria up the list of shithole countries.

Good day.
It's funny people like yourself fancy yourself educated. When you can answer simple questions. I see how you didn't respond to Niger rail line or Jonathan failures after it was presented to you. Again read my initial post before losing you mind in victim mentality blame game.

1. Because it's nonsense.
2. Where did I support sectarianism

Since 2013 we've been hearing we will. It's almost like the second Niger Bridge who ever finishes it will be crowned king author. They need to dredge and concession these river ports.
