BluntNigerian: I bought a new line last two weeks. I wanted to use it to register for my BVN, and unfortunately, it cannot be registered. .. Reason: “Someone else had already used my number to register for BVN..” ... Even with all the receipts and evidences that I am the current genuine owner of the number, the bank still refused. .. I told them to de-register the number from the other BVN which belonged to the previous owner of the same number, but they said that it cannot be done.. They said that I had to contact the person, so that he can apply for the change by himself.... (So, how do I contact him?? Do I even know him? I am the user of the number, so how do I get his current number and call him?) .. I don't know why the Banks couldn't contact the Network Service Providers to run a history-check of such lines... Or, do I have to go and get a police report by myself and proceed to my Network-Provider in order to run the history-check on the line, just because I happened to be the unfortunate citizen who happened to purchase the recyled number?? I would like to know your opinions to this.. Sanchez01: .... Sanchez01: .... seunayantokun: ... Bossman: Exactly! Not an issue at all. Registering the recycled/new sim card will require that an NIN be provided. Or once a number is recycled, Telco's will automatically delete all the owners data associated with the sim card. NobleDeSage001: Number recycling will not stop.
Rather, once a mobile number is determined to have become dormant and out of use for the prescribed period, the personal details of the former owner can be erased at the time of reissue to a new subscriber. DonOms: Yes, number recycling will continue so the number blocks are not wasted since it costs these telecoms company (TELCOS) money to get extra numbers.
What I expect the TELCOS to do is to update the NIN info at the point of re-registering a recycled number i.e. a recycled number will get updated with the NIN and data of the new customer buying the recycled number. DukeJoe17: Very simple: NIN will be replaced while registering for the recycled number. Shikina. alawiiyeyoruba: Very good question, but I think once a number isn't in use again, the entire database would be wiped alongside the NIN |

BluntNigerian: In the case of criminal cases, or any court cases that happened to involve the Recycled SIM, (Since the Network-Providers had supposedly wiped out the information of the previous owner of the SIM, and they didn't keep any backup information about the previous owner), it then means that the new owner is in for a troublem he knows absolutely nothing about. ... Same issues are also experienced when trying to register for BVN with a recyled number which had already been captured on another pre-existing BVN Number. |

kutashi: It won't stop it! All they need to do is to keep track record and time line of when the line recycled! If Mr A is presently using the number, his NIN and all other infos will be active until he discontinue using it and recycle by the Network.
Immediately Mr. B start using the same number, his NIN and other infos become active on the line.
In case of theft, criminal cases, or any court cases that happened to involve the SIM, the network will just provide the time of who, when and what regarding the activities on the line but it's highly advisable if you lost your phone to quickly make a formal report to the police.
I had an experience on this and GLO did a fantastic job with just only email where I detailed what happened with date because I keep records a lot! And they confirmed my story and responded immediately! (@bolded) This is exactly what they don't do. They would just wipe out all the information about the previous owner from their own database too.. A lot of police tracking that got the wrong persons involved are as a result of wrong information given to the police by the network providers who just provided the information about the current owner of such numbers to the police. |
Phones › Re: With The NIN Synchronisation In Place, What Happens To Number Recycling? by BluntNigerian(op): 4:55am On Dec 18, 2020 |
Sanchez01: Its a tricky question. I believe the NIN synchronisation will force the hands of telcos into either pushing the period of recycling backward, say two years or might be totally abolished.
Even before now, there have been instances where an old customer's details still show up on new customer details on specific telco work tools.
The NIN synchronisation does not in any way favour telcos because a sizeable amount of their gross comes from SIM sales. The idea of recycling in the first place is to leave no stone unturned. But with the new move, it would mean your number becomes your identity, and as such, can't be handled carelessly. (@bolded) That's the aim. |

overseasnbeyond: Your wisdom will never die. Be mindful Nigerian government and leaders already know the end products of their strategies as an avenue to make /steal money from the unsuspected citizens. To set Nigeria on the right track is just very easy but Personal interest is always overriding National interest in the mind of the leaders. A good biometric data is what the country needs to restore her sanity. As at today 1. 85% of drivers don't have driver's license because they are not traceable or have falsified license. 2. Law enforcement cannot trace criminal or do background check. 3. Millions of Ghost worker are on payroll and even get pension. 4. Millions of dead voters. and lots more (@bolded) It's a pity. |

Start a hashtag

If you think it's not true, then tell me why they always use projected values to estimate the population of Nigeria. But if the NIN policy is properly adhered to, the true Nigerian Population can always be estimated |

seunayantokun: Yeah, with all that now, we should be able to pick our voter's card from any bank, telecom operator's office, NIS offices, etc. Underage voting can be dealt with easily and disenfranchisement in area of voters registration will stop. During voting, voter's NIN or NIN must be written on each ballot paper, then we are getting there. (@Bolded) It's supposed to be a secret ballot. So, no need for that. |

CodeTemplar: Biometric data in the hands of private entities is considered safer and arouses lesser suspicion worldwide. Once the govt is involved, the tendency for absolute power to corrupt absolutely is amplified almost immediately and that creates a monstrous problem. Look at how they used CBN regulatory power to frustrate endsars donors. Once the have your VIN tied or linked to your NIN, they can discriminate against those who voted who in election when doing welfare schemes for example so that question of the limit of its use must be properly defined. Let it be synchronised... When they mentioned that some people constituted 5% and discriminated against them badly, there were no synchronisations then... So, if such happens now that there are synchronisations here and there, we can easily know how the information got known. |

CodeTemplar: Brilliant idea but in Nigeria the abnormal is always triumphing over the normal and sensible options. They can use it to check multiple voters registrations and many more ills but what happens when some section of the country subtly reject on religious ground and circumvent the system to their advantage and to the disadvantage of those who complied?
I am talking of core northerners. This is where the so-called enlightened Nigerians should come out and take a strong stand |
