Politics › You Lied, I Didn’t Pay My Children' School Fees From Kogi Coffers; Bello to EFCC by Bobloco(op): 10:48pm On Apr 26, 2024 |
Embattled former governor of Kogi, Yahaya Bello, has debunked allegations surrounding the payment of school fees for his children from the state coffers. Recall Chairman of the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Mr Olanipekun Olukoyede, during a media briefing on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, alleged that Bello withdrew funds from the Kogi State Government account to pay his children’s school fees, just before leaving office. Reacting, Yahaya in a statement titled “Payment for school fees: Setting the records straight” and signed Friday by Ohiare Michael, denied the allegations. “While we reserve our rights to seek redress against the said defamatory statements, permit us to briefly state the following to set the records straight: “His Excellency, Yahaya Bello’s children have attended the American International School, Abuja well before he became Governor and he has paid fees for his children as and when due and without fail. “His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello did not pay the sum of USD720,000 as alleged by the EFCC Chairman or USD840,000 as is being bandied about on the internet. “The payment of the fees was not effected at about the time his Excellency was to leave office as claimed by Mr. Olukoyede but same commenced in 2021. “Alhaji Yahaya Bello DID NOT pay the fees of his Children with monies from the Coffers of the Kogi State Government. “When the EFCC approached the American International School Abuja (AISA) to illegally recover funds legitimately paid by Alhaji Yahaya Bello and other family members, a member of the family challenged the EFCC’s unlawful acts to recover funds legitimately paid. The FCT High Court, in Suit No. “FCT/HC/2574/2023 between: Mr. Ali Bello v. The Incorporated Trustees of American International School, Abuja, held that AISA could not lawfully and unilaterally refund to a third party, including the EFCC, fees paid by the parties to the suit. “The Court subsequently mandated AISA to continue to provide the services it had been paid with respect to the fees. “From the foregoing, it is clear that no money belonging to Alhaji Yahaya Bello or his family members with regard to school fees has been recovered by the EFCC. “Now, let it be known that, contrary to misleading narratives by the EFCC, all the documents published online i.e. receipts and letters, that the EFCC has released online, in furtherance of its unrelenting persecution of the former Governor, are documents filed by lawyers in the suit instituted on behalf of Alhaji Yahaya Bello and others who paid fees for their wards under the Advance Fee Payment Agreement with AISA. Those documents, having been filed by his lawyers, are thus public documents, which show that His Excellency, Yahaya Bello, has nothing to hide with regard to the payment of advance fees for his children. This unending harassment and persecution, even while in office, were among key reasons he sought to enforce his fundamental human rights. “We state that the payment of these fees and the legitimacy thereof is the subject matter of Charge No. FHC/CR/573/2022, filed by the EFCC since 15th December 2022 at the Federal High Court, Abuja. The Charge is pending and the Court has yet to make any finding or convicted anyone in respect of the said sum,” the statement partly read https://tribuneonlineng.com/you-lied-i-didnt-pay-my-childrens-school-fees-from-kogi-coffers-yahaya-bello-replies-efcc/ |

Agboola Ajayi, the winner of the primary election of the PDP which took place on Thursday, Jegede appealed to other aspirants to join hands with the party’s candidate to rescue the state. The statement reads, “I congratulate H.E. Alfred Agboola Ajayi on his emergence as the governorship candidate of the PDP in Ondo State in the upcoming contest for the office of governor later this year. I equally congratulate the PDP family on the successful conduct of the party primary. “No doubt, the outcome of the primary conducted signals the beginning of the great struggle to wrestle power from the APC-led government and put Ondo State again on the path of growth and development. “It is time to join hands and build a party that will fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people. “I call on all the aspirants/contestants in the race, who coincidentally are from the southern senatorial zone, to cooperate fully with the candidate and be part of the great push for the rebirth of our dear state,” the legal luminary said in the statement. https://leadership.ng/jegede-confident-of-pdps-victory-in-ondo-govship-election/#google_vignetteCc Mynd44 Nlfpmod fergie001 |
Politics › Hardship, Insecurity Fueling Mental Illness In Nigeria – Archbishop by Bobloco(op): 7:10pm On Apr 26, 2024 |
The Catholic Archbishop of Kaduna, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso has said that hardship, insecurity and other challenges in the country are pushing so many Nigerians into mental disorder.
Archbishop Ndagoso said this at the 2024 Annual General Assembly of Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna with the theme; ‘Integrating Mental Health Into Pastoral Care in the Archdiocese of Kaduna’.
The respected cleric said the country has in the last 13 years been going through insurgency, banditry, kidnappings for ransom, farmers/herders conflicts, ethno-religious conflicts, armed robbery, alcohol and substance abuse.
He noted that of late, very high cost of living,l caused mainly by the unplanned and hasty removal of fuel subsidy and the free floating of the Naira which led to its unimaginable devaluation have brought unprecedented and untold hardship on the vast majority of the citizenry, thereby causing mental and physical illnesses.
“Many people have lost, not only their sources of livelihood but above all their homes and ancestral lands. Acute hunger leading to malnutrition and death especially of children are the order of the day in our country today. Many are at a loss. Depression, anxiety and fear of the unknown are on the increase in the land,” the cleric said.
He further blamed insecurity for the people’s mental health, noting that “security challenges seem to be still in the thick of the woods.”
He lamented that the spate of kidnappings for ransom is on the increase in some rural communities.
“We must continue to be vigilant and work together with all security agents especially the local vigilante groups.
“Communities must be ready now to take their destinies into their hands. Many have done it with good results. Like I said last year, the involvement of locals as informants within our communities has further compounded the problem. I believe there is something each community can do to protect itself,” the Archbishop charged.
Ndagoso therefore lamented on the increasing cases of mental health in the country, urging the government at all levels to urgently proffer solutions to the problem by addressing poverty and insecurity which he noted were responsible for mental health disorder in most homes.
He therefore urged religious leaders to continue to preach messages of hope to the people as a measure to help them see reasons to live. https://leadership.ng/hardship-insecurity-fueling-mental-illness-in-nigeria-archbishop/

Politics › "Corruption Fighting Back" – Kano Anti-Graft Agency Boss Reacts by Bobloco(op): 3:55pm On Apr 26, 2024 |
...... to withdrawal of Police officers Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, PCACC, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado has described the withdrawal of policemen attached to the agency as corruption fighting back.
Addressing newsmen in his office, he said policemen working in the Commission exhibit professionalism and do not compromise especially when investigating high profile cases.
“If you are fighting corruption you step on toes and you would not be forgiven. So corruption is fighting back.
“From the look of things there are people trying to stop the commission from its work,” Rimin Gado stated.
However, he commended the police authorities for clarifying their position on the withdrawal, which was hinged on personnel audit, saying that there was a communication gap on the development.
Rimin Gado noted that he is not the only one taking the heat “as police officers involved in investigation of high profile cases are also taking the heat”.
He, however, vowed that they will not relent but continue to do the job without compromise.
He added that the Commission will continue to learn from its mistakes, stressing the need amend the law establishing the agency to give specific roles to the police and other law enforcement agents.
According to him, between 50 and 100 suits were served on the Commission asking it to stop investigation in high profile cases.
Rado said the Commission has worthy partners in the police, DSS and Ministry of Justice, adding that states like Jigawa and Benue are emulating what the PCACC is doing. https://dailypost.ng/2024/04/26/corruption-fighting-back-kano-anti-graft-agency-boss-reacts-to-withdrawal-of-police-officers/

Politics › LP, PDP Kick As US Report Says 2023 Poll Reflected Nigerians’ Will by Bobloco(op): 9:37am On Apr 26, 2024 |
ABUJA — The opposition Labour Party, LP, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, expressed shock over how the United States 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices arrived at its conclusion that the 2023 polls reflected the will of Nigerians, despite widespread irregularities.
However, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Presidency hailed the report but said the party did not need external validation of its victories at the polls.
The report published by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, US Department of State, highlighted human rights practices and violations in different countries, including Nigeria.
It said the last general elections in Nigeria reflected the will of the populace, despite widespread irregularities.
Picking holes in the conclusion, LP and PDP said they are committed to deepening democracy in Nigeria and averting a one-party state.
Highlights of report The report stated that supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, suppressed votes in Igbo-dominated areas during the March 2023 governorship election in Lagos.
“National elections were widely reported to have reflected the will of voters, despite technical and logistical difficulties, and some irregularities.
“Many independent observers who assessed the results of the presidential, legislative, and state-level elections during the year reflected the will of voters despite reports of voter suppression and vote-buying, campaigning at polling stations, lack of ballot secrecy, violence, and intimidation.
“During the March 18 state election in Lagos, All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters reportedly intimidated and suppressed voters in Igbo-dominated areas, which Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, won in the February 25 national election.
“Viral videos on social media showed APC supporters in Ojo (LGA in Lagos) threatening to attack ethnic Igbo voters presumed to be pro-Obi.
“In Eti-Osa, APC supporters also attacked journalists and, in some cases, shut down voting and prevented non-Yoruba voters from accessing polls. They similarly destroyed property and physically blocked voters in Amuwo-Odofin. “According to videos posted on social media, police officers were present but failed to respond to attacks,’’ the report read.
It said there was no evidence that individuals who perpetrated violence in Lagos during the election were arrested or prosecuted.
Corruption in govt
The report also stated that the Nigerian government has not “consistently” implemented anti-corruption laws. It said there was “widespread” corruption across the country, including the judiciary.
“In August, President Tinubu appointed former Governor Abubakar Bagudu, the Minister of Budget, despite Bagudu’s widely reported history of helping then-President Sani Abacha steal hundreds of millions of dollars from the government in the 1990s,’’ the report stated.
We remain committed to democracy — PDP, LP However, the two main opposition political parties, the PDP and the LP, in reaction to the report, restated their commitment to the development of democracy in Nigeria, despite its shortcomings.
National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, in a telephone chat with Vanguard said: “I am yet to read the report but one thing we, as a party, can assure Nigerians is that we remain committed to the advancement of democracy in our country. “We are also committed to ensuring that our country does not become a one-party state or slide into dictatorship.”
Speaking in a similar vein, his counterpart in the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said: “With all said and done, we take solace in the fact that the report was fair enough to admit that there were irregularities, including but not limited to vote buying, ballot box snatching, intimidation and physical attacks on our party supporters, especially in Lagos.
“The report was magnanimous enough to note that supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, suppressed votes in areas dominated by our supporters during the March 2023 governorship election in Lagos.
“To say the outcome of such an election reflects the majority view of Nigerians is left for the people to judge. Our commitment to the development of democracy in Nigeria remains unshakable.”
Report is welcome devt, but… —APC On its part, the ruling APC said while it welcomed the report, it does not need any external validation in that regard. Deputy National Organizing Secretary of the party, Nze Chidi Duru, told Vanguard that the party had since moved on, concentrating on developing Nigeria’s electoral democracy.
He said: “It (report) is a welcome development but I want to restate that we do not need any external validation on the outcome of the 2023 general election.
‘’That election, as far as the party is concerned and as far as the people of Nigeria are concerned, is now behind us and we are looking forward to the 2027 general election.
“All the infrastructure of government at all levels, whether it is at the federal, state, local government or ward level, are already in place. Our councillors, National Assembly members and governors have been elected and are in place. ‘’Where there are issues arising from that election, those elections have been contested at the courts and we know that the courts have heard and given their well-considered ruling. So, we have gone beyond that.
“We also believe improvement, development and change are constant things and then as a government, we will continue to encourage and fund INEC in a way that empowers them to be able to further improve the electoral process in Nigeria. “As we continue to march on the path of democracy, we hope to continue to conduct elections that would reflect the will of Nigerians.
“So, in a nutshell, as much as this is welcome, we do not need any external validation. Elections have been conducted and those elected have assumed offices and where there are disputes, they were taken to courts and the issues have been resolved.”
We don’t require any foreign validation to make our election free, fair — Presidency
Speaking in like manner, the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, said INEC “conducted a free and fair election.’’
He noted that there is nowhere in the world the electoral umpire conducted a 100 per cent error-free election. His words: “INEC conducted a free and fair election. We don’t need any foreign country to validate or make our election free and fair.
“The report doesn’t require any validation. As far as we are concerned, it was a free and fair election. We (the All Progressives Congress) won the election.”
The presidential aide also debunked the allegation of voter suppression in Lagos State. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/04/lp-pdp-kick-as-us-report-says-2023-poll-reflected-nigerians-will/amp/
