Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government was unfaithful in its promises to workers in 2023.


In a statement on Sunday, Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, berated the federal government for not keeping to agreements with Nigerian workers despite the patience demonstrated by the labour unions.

Ajaero noted that members of the Union “have faced uncertainties, overcome obstacles, and witnessed moments that may have left them feeling disheartened.”


According to him, the government had failed to live up to expectations on the promise of an N35,000 provisional wage for three months, completion of the Port Harcourt refinery, and implementation of the Compressed Natural Gas initiative.

“Whether these have been faithfully implemented is open to every discerning Nigerian.

“The N35,000 Wage Award has not been faithfully implemented; the Port Harcourt PH refinery has not come on stream as projected while the National Minimum Wage Negotiation Council has not been inaugurated as agreed; agents of government have distorted the Compressed Natural Gas CNG project for the benefit of a few,” he said.


DAILY POST recalls that the organized labour comprising the NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC, declared a nationwide strike over fuel subsidy removal in September.

POWA,being the owners of the building complex, had earlier duly issued quit notices to their tennants and communicated clearly that they intended to renovate and remodel the building owing to its derelict state.

The tenants, under a trade union association , took the landlord to court seeking not to be evicted despite the owners having plans for their own building.

The court ruled in favour of the landlords (POWA) who will later give the tenants up till December 31st to evict the building -this was about 2 weeks ago.

In a trending video made by one of the affected tenants who spoke in Ibo, he was captured saying that the state government demolished a federal building.

These people and their lies.

Never ever take anything that comes out of their mouths as facts.


They knew the dispute was between them and their landlord but they still wanted to make it an ethnic issue.

I have had several runnings with them and I know how they can easily slander and make false accusations and allegations against someone.

Port Harcourt Refinery is still test-running to ensure operational readiness before the commencement of commercial operations.

The Refinery was expected to resume refining after a Turn Around Maintenance, TAM in December 2023.

But checks by Vanguard on Sunday indicated that the exercise, to be followed by crude supply is still ongoing.


Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Oladapo Soneye, who confirmed the development, said: “We have said that the Port Harcourt Refinery has been completed. Test running is ongoing. It is targeted at ensuring that everything, including the lines, is in perfect condition. It is when everything is confirmed to be fine that supply of crude for refining can start.”

Previously, NNPC Ltd. had said it achieved the mechanical completion of rehabilitation work on the Area 5 Plant of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC).

According to NNPC Ltd., “Rehabilitation work has been ongoing at the Refinery for over two years and the NNPC Ltd. had pledged to complete Phase One of the project (mechanical completion and flare start-up) of Old Port Harcourt Refinery (Area 5) by 31st December 2023.”

Speaking during an inspection tour of the rehabilitation project, which also coincided with the 15th Refineries’ Rehabilitation Steering Committee Meeting, the Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, had said as of December 15th, 2023, 84.4% of Area 5 Plant, a key component of the Refinery, and 77.4% of the entire rehabilitation project have been completed.

He said: “In our quest to ensure that this refinery is re-streamed to continue to deliver value to Nigerians, we made a promise that we will reach a mechanical completion of phase one of the rehabilitation project by the end of December and get the other plants running in 2024. Today, we have kept those commitments.”

Similarly, the Chairman of the NNPC Ltd Board, Chief Pius Akinyelure described the milestone as “historic”, stressing that the board was proud of the staff and management of the refinery.

“We are just starting. We want to be at the highest level of production so that we will keep the prices of petroleum prices in the country stable to give comfort to our people and generate more revenue for our country,”[/b] Akinyelure noted.


Also speaking, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, said the milestone is another landmark of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He thanked Nigerians for their patience and the trust they have in NNPC Ltd.’s ability to deliver on this huge project.

[b]On his part, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo said re-streaming the Refinery will herald a good omen for the nation’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) industry, as LPG, also known as cooking gas, is a major by-product of the Refinery.
