Politics › Buhari Administration Not A Failure – Ngige by Bobloco(op): 2:41pm On Jan 06, 2024 |
The immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has insisted that the All Progressives Congress government of former President Muhammadu Buhari was not a failure as he was part of the government and witnessed projects carried out by the administration. Ngige listed the completion of the Second Niger Bridge, school feeding programmes, and Enugu Airport, among others, as some of the projects carried out by the last administration. The former Anambra State governor stated these in an interview with journalists on Saturday, in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, while distributing palliatives to indigenes from the 21 local government areas of the state. He explained that his faction remains the authentic APC in Anambra, insisting that there was no crisis in the party. He said, “It is not true that the Buhari administration was a failure. I was part of the government and the administration completed a lot of projects including the Second Niger Bridge, school feeding programme and numerous railways across the country. “There is APC one and two in Anambra State. I won’t deny that fact. I am the father of APC here, I am the face of APC in Anambra State and I know for certain that we have newcomers who have been coming since the year 2021 and because the party is like a church, you don’t stop people from entering a church to seek salvation, so also you can’t stop people from entering a party to support government in power. “We allow everybody but there is a segregation already because the new members don’t want to reckon with the old members who have laboured for the party from the time we were SDP to ACD, AC to ACN and then finally liberated as APC when we collapsed with NNPP and CPC. These are facts, and I don’t like denying things are facts.” While responding to how APC will wrestle the ruling APGA in Anambra for the governorship race in the state in 2025, Ngige said, “Don’t worry for us, this is politics and in politics, you disagree to agree. One day if you don’t agree, you bear the consequences. We didn’t agree in the 2021 election and the result was clear in Anambra State. “I am optimistic that APC will take over in Anambra come 2025 for if you are not optimistic in life, then you go and commit suicide. So, optimism is with us. It is our watchword in APC. We have not done what we are supposed to do here but I am hopeful that between now and 2025, when the governorship election will be held in Anambra, we will have put our house in order and take over from APGA.” The former minister who promised to distribute more food items like bags of garri and cartons of tomatoes to citizens next week, said, “I am still on sabbatical leave, resting and by the end of May this year when I would have rested for one year, I will decide and publicise my next line of action. “Previously, we distributed 2,000 bags of rice, this time around, it was increased to 4,500 bags with yams because lots of homes and people are hungry and I do not want to call it poverty. “Last farming season, Nigeria was unlucky as banditry and flooding caused havoc to farmers. Food-producing areas of Anambra State were affected and more of our people fell into that category, so we have three categories of the people we are catering for – APC members, people living with disabilities and elderly from the 21 Local Government Areas of Anambra State.” https://punchng.com/buhari-administration-not-a-failure-ngige/?amp |
Politics › N585m Controversy: AGF Denies Honouring Edu’s Payment Request by Bobloco(op): 2:32pm On Jan 06, 2024 |
The Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, has denied honouring the reported N585.198 million payment request by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betty Edu. The minister had asked the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to pay the said amount to the personal account of a certain Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola. Dr. Edu’s request was contained in a letter referenced: FMHAPA/HQ/S.208 and dated December 20, 2023. Her explanation was that the payment was meant for grants to vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom , Cross River, Ogun and Lagos States. However, reacting to the controversy generated by the payment request considered to be illegal, the AGF said she did not honour the request as it was not her responsibility to make payments for projects and programmes on behalf of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). Dr. Madein position’s was contained in a statement by the Director of Press, Mr. Bawa Mokwa of the OAGF, in Abuja this afternoon. She stated that allocations are released to self-accounting MDAs in line with the budget and such MDAs are responsible for the implementation of their projects and payments for such projects. The AGF explained that although her Office received the said request from the Ministry, it did not carry out the payment. The Ministry was however advised on the appropriate steps to take in making such payments in line with the established payment procedure. The AGF noted that in such situations, payments are usually processed by the affected Ministries as self-accounting entities and no bulk payment is supposed to be made to an individual’s account in the name of Project Accountant. She added that such payment should be sent to the beneficiaries through their verified bank accounts. Dr. Madein reiterated her determination to uphold the principles of accountability and transparency in the management of public finances. She advised MDAs to always ensure that the requisite steps are taken in carrying out financial transactions. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/01/n585m-controversy-agf-denies-honouring-edus-payment-request/amp/ |

Politics › Guber Poll: Anxiety As States Await Supreme Court Judgements by Bobloco(op): 6:29am On Jan 06, 2024 |
• More security personnel deployed in Kano, Nasarawa, Plateau, others
• We’re hoping for the best – APC
• We expect justice – PDP
There is tension and an uneasy calm across some states in the country as the Supreme Court is set to deliver its final judgments on the governorship elections that are still being challenged in courts.
Governorship polls were held in 28 of the 36 states of the federation in March 2023. While the outcomes in many of the states were not seriously questioned, others were challenged in courts. All the various cases have gone through the tribunals and the Court of Appeal. But the opposing parties are now awaiting the verdicts of the Supreme Court.
In states such as Kano, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Delta, Bauchi and Plateau states, which are the main battlegrounds, there is apprehension in the political atmosphere. The frontline parties in the Supreme Court legal battles are the All Progressives Congress (APC), The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
In Nasarawa State, for instance, the PDP said there is a palpable sentiment that if the Supreme Court adheres strictly to the merits of the case without entangling itself in technicalities, David Emmanuel Ombugadu of the PDP stands a chance of being declared the winner.
In preparation for any eventuality, Saturday Sun gathered that additional security personnel have been deployed to flashpoints where there could be violence, especially in Nasarawa Eggon, Akwanga, Lafia and Karu Local Government Areas of the state. In Delta State, which is predominantly a PDP state, there is uncertainty as a cross section of party faithful still entertains fears over how the apex court would interpret Section 137 of the constitution. Their fear is not unconnected with the covert support for former Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege during the election by a PDP leader and former governor, who is now said to be pulling some strings at the presidency.
But a chieftain of the PDP, Sylvester Imonina, said APC was only daydreaming by thinking that the said section would be interpreted in its favour.
Imonina, a lawyer, cited the December 22, 2023 Supreme Court ruling on the governorship election in Enugu State as well as the 2017 decision on Bayelsa State governorship election to buttress his argument.
He contended that Section 137 required oral evidence to breathe life into electoral materials dumped at the tribunal in order to prove non-compliance, noting that the APC failed in that regard as the party called only three witnesses during trial.
In Plateau State, the incessant killings and general insecurity have necessitated the deployment of security personnel in parts of the state, including the capital, Jos. Residents who spoke to Saturday Sun said the Supreme Court verdict on the March 18, 2023 governorship poll in the state might escalate the insecurity in the state, even as they expressed satisfaction with the fresh deployment of security personnel. In Kano, one of the most volatile states, there is also apprehension as the APC and the NNPP await the Supreme Court judgment, which is due to be delivered in the coming days.
Investigations by Saturday Sun indicate that supporters of the APC in the state are on the edge, though they talk less about their fears and next moves. But a highly placed party member in the state said they are keeping their cards close to their chests since they won at the tribunal and at the appeal court.
At the moment, there is some light deployment of security personnel on the streets of Kano, especially in areas considered as political flashpoints. It was gathered that the number of deployed security personnel would definitely increase once a date is fixed by the Supreme Court for the judgement.
In Kaduna, in an apparent solidarity support for Governor Uba Sani, some women supporters from the opposition parties who did not want their identities revealed told Saturday Sun: “We are just waiting for the Supreme Court ruling so that we can defect to APC because we believe that the court ruling will favour Governor Sani. Even from the governor’s body language, you can see that he is sure of victory at the apex court. We cannot remain outside political happenings and die of hunger.”
There has been a security beef-up across the state since the governorship election petition tribunal and Appeal Court judgments that favoured the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its candidate, Governor Uba Sani. The police authorities said they were leaving no stone unturned for the expected outcome of the Supreme Court ruling.
But in a chat with Saturday Sun, spokesman of the ruling APC, Felix Morka, said the party is unperturbed with the impending judgements, noting that it is certain of emerging victorious at the court.
“We are hoping for the best. There is no need prejudging the outcomes. We have had the opportunities to make our cases and we are hoping for the best outcomes,” he said. On the other hand, the PDP Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, said that the party expects the Supreme Court to do justice in the governorship appeal cases involving governors elected on its platform, which are currently before the apex court.
“We are expectant. We are looking up to the judiciary, the Supreme Court Justices, that they will rise up to the occasion and deliver justice in the matters. You know that it is opinion of the people that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man.
“And today the matter has gotten to the highest court of the land. So everybody expects them to do the needful and deliver justice.” https://sunnewsonline.com/guber-poll-anxiety-as-states-await-supreme-court-judgements/?amp

Politics › Wike Receives N50 Billion For Capital Projects In FCT by Bobloco(op): 7:49am On Jan 05, 2024 |
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday, said the Ministry of Finance has released N50 billion to the Administration to finance ongoing capital projects.
The amount, according to Wike, is 50 per cent of FCT’s N100 billion 2023 supplementary budget approved by the National Assembly in December, 2023.
The minister made the announcement, after an inspection tour of some ongoing projects in the FCT, in Abuja on Thursday.
He said he has directed the Permanent Secretary to immediately make payments to the contractors handling projects in FCT.
“I am happy to announce to you that the Ministry of Finance has released 50 per cent of the national supplementary budget.
“That in a way, has given us that hope that the contractors will be paid anytime from now.
“We have also gotten assent to the FCT Statutory Budget, which again, has given us hope that no project will be left uncompleted as promised. As you can see, these are quality projects, which we are very satisfied with.
“We believe that the arrangements made by the contractors will enable us to commission the projects to celebrate Mr President’s one year in office.”
The minister commended the residents of Abuja for their support, while assuring them that there was no promise made that would not be fulfilled, stressing that a promise made would be fulfilled.
He expressed confidence that the projects would be delivered on schedule, saying “we are quite hopeful; we are quite convinced that they would keep to the time scheduled as agreed.
“We are happy with what we have seen, and we will continue to do things to the satisfaction of the residents of Abuja and assure them that the renewed hope agenda is not a mere talk.”
Wike acknowledged some challenges at the course of delivering the projects, adding, however, that the challenges were surmountable.
He added that with the kind of support from President Bola Tinubu, there were no challenges that would not be surmountable.
One of the projects inspected is the Outer Southern Expressway, which stretched from A.A Rano, through Deeper Life Junction, SARS, Apo roundabout to Wasa District.
The road is being constructed by China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) Nigeria Limited.
Wike also inspected the Northern N-20 Expressway in Jahi District being constructed by Gilmor Construction firm and the Vice President’s residence being constructed by Julius Berger.
The Area Manager, CGC Nigeria Ltd., Yong Hong, assured the minister that the Outer Southern Expressway would be delivered before May.
Similarly, the representative of Julius Berger, Mr Oliver Berger, said that the team were on site for the past two months and have done a lot of work on the VP residence project.
“We have done a lot of cleaning inside and outside. As you can see a lot of infrastructural work has happened; earth work around the fence line has been done, sewage and other trenches have been done.
“All the procurement processes have commenced already and from the preparation point of view we are in a good position to turn all our plans and procurement activities into action,” he said. https://sunnewsonline.com/wike-receives-n50bn-for-capital-projects-in-fct-2/?amp

Education › 15,000 Nigerian Students In Benin Republic Affected By FG Ban – NANS by Bobloco(op): 6:25am On Jan 05, 2024 |
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Benin Republic says there 15,000 Nigerians studying in the country.
This is as NANS called for leniency over the ban on validation of degree certificates from the country and Togo.
Recall that an investigative reporter had recently exposed certificate racketeering in schools in the neighbouring countries.
Following the development, the federal government announced a ban on the validation of degree certificates from the countries.
But, the NANS president in Benin Republic, Ugochukwu Favour, said the government should consider legitimately admitted students.
Favour spoke Thursday on Channels TV’s breakfast show Sunrise Daily.
He said the government should step up efforts to probe the matter and punish those involved in the saga.
He said NANS in the Benin Republic had constituted a committee to probe the matter, adding that the report of its findings would be vital in curbing future occurrences.
“For now, I will say that the Federal Government should look into the issue. Now, you can’t, because it is happening in this school, punish everyone because it involved close to 15,000 students in the Benin Republic.
“I have really not validated if it has been happening for a long time. This is just like what just came out on social media and we are still trying to find out how long it has been happening. So, that is why I set up a committee as the president to investigate it,” he said. https://dailytrust.com/15000-nigerian-students-in-benin-republic-affected-by-fg-ban-nans/

OldSkoolHeadBoy: If Atiku should truly contest in 2027, then the political landscape would be an interesting one to watch. The permutations would be as follows;
ATIKU He would not receive any reasonable votes from the SE/SE and the SW would still vote overwhelmingly for BAT and SE is for Peter Obi to take again. However, just like in the 2023 General Elections, he would receive a moderate vote from the North but it would not be sufficient to make him the President.
Peter Obi He had his best shot in 2023 but it fell short of the requirements to make him the President. In 2027, his fortunes would plummet badly because he would receive far less votes from the North and the SW. The calculation from the North would be that they would rather support BAT for another 4 years to fulfil the maximum of 8 years allowable by the constitution, instead of Peter Obi, who in the event if he wins, would start another 8 years tenor, which would make the North to wait for a total of 12 years to mount the saddle again. If the North supports Tinubu to win again in 2027, automatically in 2031 the SW would return the favour to support a Northern candidate overwhelmingly.
Bola Tinubu From the scenarios above, if he can stabilise the economy the odds are in his favour to win again. If rigging is reduced to the barest minimum, Tinubu cannot defeat any of the two above |
