Politics › Buhari Again Orders Security Agencies To Eliminate Insurgents by Bobloco(op): 12:39am On Aug 19, 2022 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his directive to security agencies to take the fight to the hideouts of the criminal elements and ensure they are completely eliminated. He gave the directive in Maiduguri, Borno State, on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day 2022, according to a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. He said: “The men and officers of Operation Lafiya Dole, security agencies and the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) are very much appreciated for their commitment to the fight against insurgency. “I commend their professionalism and tactical penetration to the hideout of the criminal elements, leading to appreciable improvement of the security situation in this North East Region, without which the resettlement of the IDP’s would not be possible. “I, therefore, implore you not to relent in your efforts, continue to take the fight to their hideouts and ensure they are completely eliminated. “I also implore you to ensure adequate security for farmers in their farming activities. Agricultural activities are most needed for settlement and development of the rural areas and this can only be achieved if the farmers are sure of their safety.” The President also directed the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and its agencies to come up with specific programmes to address urgent threats posed by explosive remnants in the North East region. He affirmed government’s commitment to reducing the effect of disasters, climate change, insurgency and challenges of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) In directing the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and its agencies to pay particular attention to emerging issues amid the return and rehabilitation of Nigerians displaced in the 13-year conflict and insurgency in the region, the President said: “The emerging issues include the increasing number of orphans and widows. “From our experience in the unfortunate Civil War, I know the threat that unexploded ordnances can pose to returnees even after the conflict has ended as we saw in the latest IED incident in Bama just last week. “I urge the Ministry and its agencies as well as State Governments and the Special Committee I have set up under the Chairmanship of the Vice President to come up with specific programmes and projects that respond to these emerging challenges of explosive ordnance as well as that of children orphaned by insurgency.” On World Humanitarian Day, commemorated annually on August 19, President Buhari commended all humanitarian aid workers that provide the much-needed assistance to those afflicted by the conflict. He praised humanitarian aid workers across the globe for distinguishing themselves through their courage, commitment and drive to help their fellow humans in need – often at extreme personal risk to themselves. “This typifies the nature of humanitarian work and sacrifice, and it is a great testimony for the theme of this year’s World Humanitarian Day which is: “It takes a village.” He led other guests at the event in Maiduguri to observe a minute of silence in memory of all who lost their lives in disasters and humanitarian workers who died in the line of duty. “On this 2022 World Humanitarian Day and every other day, we stand and shall continue to stand in solidarity with humanitarian aid workers and recognize their tremendous service and sacrifice. “We celebrate their tireless efforts to save lives, preserve human dignity, and alleviate suffering. Their selfless commitment and actions stand as an example to us all. “We will also make sure that they have our backing by ensuring that the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Social Development facilitates their work,” he pledged. President Buhari also used the occasion to appreciate General Theophilus Danjuma (retd) for his support to Borno State Government in rehabilitating many IDPs in the North East. He described Danjuma’s humanitarian assistance as significant and patriotic and urged other Nigerians and organisations with the means to support humanitarian work to emulate him. He also thanked the UNDP, the European Union, the government of USA, United Kingdom and Germany, as well as other foreign establishments for their support in complementing the Administration’s effort to stabilize the North East Region. He urged all relevant public, private and international agencies to support government’s drive to rehabilitate IDPs, care for victims of insurgency as well as commitment to “on-going processes concerning Boko Haram/ISWAP members willing to surrender.” Governor Babagana Zulum said the state was enjoying relative peace and stability and applauded the sacrifices of soldiers, security agencies, local vigilantes and the MNJTF. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/buhari-again-orders-security-agencies-to-eliminate-insurgents-3/ |

Politics › $418m Paris Club Refund: Malami Lied, Actions Self-Serving – Governors by Bobloco(op): 6:13am On Aug 18, 2022 |
The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has reacted to comments by Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, where he said they had no basis to reject the proposed deductions of $418 million from the Paris Club refund.
The governors said all claims made by the AGF were lies and his actions self-serving and fraudulent and have vowed to pursue the matter to the highest court of the land.
Malami at the State House Ministerial Briefing organised by Presidential Communications Team, had said the governors originally created the liability whose payment they had also indemnified, therefore all the “noise making that is now being generated arising from the Governors forum” is unjustified.
Fayemi who read the outcome of the meeting as contained in the communique said: “Governors extensively reviewed the purported attempts by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Finance, to circumvent the law and a recent judgment of the Supreme Court to secure the approval of the federal legislative council to effect illegal payment of a sum of $418 million to contractors who allegedly executed consultancy in respect to the Paris Club refund, to state and local governments.
“The forum set up a committee comprising the chairman, the governor of Ekiti state, the vice chairman, the governor of Ondo State, the governor of Plateau State, the governor of Nasarawa state, and the governor of Ebonyi State to interface with the committee set up by Mr. President to review the matter.
“But the position of the Governors’ Forum is clear and unequivocal. Although this matter is sub judice and we are very reluctant to get in the way of a matter that is still being pursued in the court. We’re constrained by the manner in which the honorable attorney has been going around various media houses and purporting to create the impression that this is a liability to which governors had committed themselves to and agreed to, even though he is very much aware that that’s not the case.
“And we reject all of the claims that he has made on this issue. And we also insist that state will not give up on insisting that these purported claims are fraudulent and will not stand as far as governors are concerned and we would take every constitutional and legal means to ensure that these purported consultancy are fully litigated upon by the highest court in the land.
“If the courts now fine governors, and the Nigerian governors forum and state liable, then we will cross that bridge when get there. As far as we’re concerned, this is a matter that governors feel very strongly about and we do not believe that the Attorney General of the Federation is acting in the public interest, we believe he is acting in personal, selfish interest that will ultimately become clear when this matter is fully addressed, in the law court.”
On the ongoing strike which has is now on the sixth month, the governors appeal to both parties to sheath their sword and reach amicable resolution.
The governors said: “On the prolonged strike by Nigerian universities. The forum encourages the federal government and the academic staff union of universities to find meaningful resolutions to the lingering impasse and as proposed to engage with both parties just as we have done in the past in a bid to end in the strike.”
On the state of the economy, the governors said: “Finally, the forum extensively discussed the state of the Nigerian economy and security. Following a presentation by Mr. Bismarck Rewane, a member of the President’s Economic Advisory Council. The forum resolved to immediately engage with the federal government and other critical stakeholders labour, the presidential candidates of political parties and corporate actors on finding resolutions and suggestion to implement a set of immediate actions to ameliorate the worsening economic conditions in the country.” https://www.sunnewsonline.com/418m-paris-club-refund-malami-lied-actions-self-serving-govs/

Politics › PDP Crisis: Wike, Atiku’s Men Disagree Over Iyorchia Ayu by Bobloco(op): 5:35am On Aug 18, 2022 |
The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike’s team has given a condition for holding peace talks with the representatives of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar on Friday.
Sources in the governor’s team told The PUNCH on Wednesday that Wike’s men would, on getting to the meeting, insist on the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, as a condition for the talks to proceed.
It was, however, learnt that Atiku’s delegation had vowed to reject the call for Ayu’s resignation.
The PUNCH had reported that the rift between Atiku and Wike started after the governor’s ambition of becoming the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections failed following the emergence of the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as Atiku’s running mate.
According to sources in Port Harcourt, the first demand of the governor’s men at the meeting is Ayu’s resignation.
The sources added that if Atiku’s men failed to support the call for Ayu’s resignation, the meeting would not proceed.
A member of Wike’s team, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Ayu has shown that he cannot be trusted. He once said that once a presidential candidate emerges from the North, he will resign. Now, he cannot honour his own words. Can such a man be trusted?
“Ayu should leave in the interest of equity and fairness. He has to go before we agree to hold the reconciliation meeting. He is not an unbiased umpire. He worked for Atiku.”
The PUNCH reported that the meeting to settle the rift between Atiku and Wike could not materialise on Monday because Atiku’s representatives on the panel were absent.
It was learnt that the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, who should have led members of the reconciliation committee in Atiku’s camp to the meeting was the chief host during the defection of some All Progressives Congress members in Yola.
There were strong indications on Wednesday that both sides had yet to agree on the venue of the Friday meeting.
A reliable source in Atiku’s camp claimed that both parties agreed to hold the meeting in Abuja.
But a source in Wike’s camp said no one in the governor’s team was aware of the decision that the meeting would hold in Abuja.
The source further said if Ayu resigned in the interest of the party, the reconciliation meeting would be held in no other place than Port Harcourt.
“In respect of the meeting to settle the disagreement between Wike and Atiku, and as a counter to the statement that an agreement had been reached for the meeting to be held in Abuja on Friday, we are stating categorically that the meeting will be held in no place other than Port Harcourt.
“That is our position; we are unaware of the agreement that informed the claim that the reconciliation committee will meet in Abuja on Friday,” the source in Wike’s camp said.
‘Ayu won’t go’
Confiding in one of our correspondents, a member of the reconciliation panel, loyal to Atiku, said the party could not afford to remove Ayu at this time, noting that such a move would put the PDP on the back foot in the run up to the 2023 general elections.
The party stalwart further explained that the panel expected Wike’s representatives to focus on resolving the crisis and not present conditions that may be impossible to meet.
Speaking to The PUNCH on Wednesday, the party leader and reconciliation panel member stated, ‘’The panel is empowered to resolve the crisis between Atiku and Wike but that does not mean the governor can push the party around or dictate impossible terms and conditions.
‘’Though, he is important to the PDP, he cannot dictate to the party. So, the various conditions attributed to his camp such as the resignation of the party chairman cannot sail through. Removing the chairman less than eight months to the election is a recipe for defeat and we cannot accept that.’’
When contacted for reaction, the media aide to the PDP chairman, Simon Imobo-Tswana, referred our correspondent to his earlier statement in which Ayu said he would not resign.
The Media Adviser to the PDP presidential candidate, Paul Ibe, declined comment when asked for reactions to the demands by Wike’s camp.
Addressing the clamour for the resignation of the PDP chairman, especially, the demand by a chieftain of the party, Chief Bode George, that a meeting should be convened to address the matter, the party spokesman, Debo Ologunagba explained that the party had a procedure for handling such issues.
He stated, “The party always has procedures to convene meetings, we are not even aware of what he said. The party has not received any call to that effect. You are just telling me now as news. The PDP is one, we are united.
“We are working towards the goals and mission of this party, discussions are going on. We recognise the need to be steadfast in the interest of the Nigerian people.’’
Reacting to the crisis, Olabode George, in an interview on Channels television’s Politics Today, monitored by one of our correspondents on Wednesday, said it was as if some kind of devil had entered the party.
He said, “It is not only a bother to me, it is a bother to a lot of the committed, the elders, and members of the upper chamber of the party. It looks like some kind of devil has entered the midst of our party. But let me tell you something; our party has the capacity to resolve our crisis, our party has enough experienced leaders, committed leaders, and followers who will sit and be able to handle and resolve this crisis once and for all.
‘’Fortunately, we have about five weeks from now before we commence the campaign. All my appeal now is that Governor Wike should cool down. Presidential candidate Atiku should also cool down because none of their ambitions should be bigger and higher than the ambition of our party. We are appealing to both of them because there is no organisation anywhere in the world that will not have crisis but the capacity and the ability to handle the resolution of such crisis will be a measure of how developed or reliable or respectable that organisation is.”
Backing the call for the resignation of the PDP chairman, George said the North could not hold the presidential and chairmanship positions of the party.
According to him, it would be difficult to convince people in the South if the current situation continued
He argued, “All we are saying, for purposes of inclusivity: give us a position that we in the south will take home to convince our people that now the North has the presidential candidate. What are we going to use on the platform to convince the larger members of the party?
“If we don’t do that, we will not be able to convince Nigerians, especially people in the South. And I’ve told my friends from the North that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Imagine, if it was from this side that it happened, would they have accepted that? No. https://punchng.com/peace-threatened-wike-atikus-men-disagree-over-ayu/
