Webmasters / Re: Registering Nigerian TLD .ng by BOLAJIAJANI(m): 1:24pm On Dec 02, 2014
MissMeiya:

Sorry I actually disagree with both of you. There are millions of "valuable" domains and ccTLDs that can be gotten for under $30 a year. .ng is not the only ccTLD in the world. I bought one from Saint Lucia this year for $26. As I mentioned earlier, in the past two years, ccTLDs have become increasingly popular, as customized short URLs due to their ease of sharing and remembering, but most ESPECIALLY due to the character limits of Twitter. That means anyone can shorten their long URL with a custom tiny URL with a simple purchase of any two letter TLD... which happen to be ccTLDs. Why else would an American buy .lc? Because it matched my brand name.

In addition, tons of domains are parked in America. It's not illegal. There are even services that allow you to park domains, auction domains, and watch for parked domains to expire. It's up to whoever wants it to pay whatever they think it's worth to whoever got it first.

And don't forget, I did ask NIRA what their deal was with the bogus prices, and the representative could barely understand the terms I used. You give them way too much credit, because I doubt very much if the people responsible for those prices are even computer-literate.

It's good to disagree, and I like someone who does that because it shows they have their own mind. To start with, I don't think you can get any valuable ccTLD under $30. IMO, .lc isn't all that valuable outside of Saint Lucia. Perhaps, it has other uses outside of Saint Lucia, but it is limited(this I'm sure a lot of people would agree. Moreover, .ng is way better than .lc, they shouldn't even be in the same league, lol.

I'm sorry for the naive nature of the guy at NIRA. Perhaps, the guy and some others at NIRA lack the knowledge of how these things work. They are probably one of those people that work somewhere and don't know why 'A' is not 'A' there. And I didn't remember saying parking domain names, auctioning them etc is illegal - I've looked into starting a business around flipping domain names in the past.

In fact, whenever a new ccTLD is out, very valuable ones(combined with a name) are not sold at normal price, but auctioned out at very high prices. And the others that are not really general but valuable are left at normal prices which are mostly expensive compared to general TLDs.

Truth is, we should be grateful(lol) because I saw some very general names combined with .ng up for sale. That rarely happens when dealing with some other valuable ccTLDs. Although, the normal price for .ng still makes such very valuable ones inaccessible to people that are not really serious.

MissMeiya, maybe you will see this differently if you look at it from another perspective. And yes they are mostly used for custom tiny urls, but they don't purchase them 'cause of that alone. They do also because they are creative, easy to remember(like you said), matching brand names among other reasons.

We all have rights to have a different opinion though.

I'm hoping to get a car soon, so after getting the car, would I now go through all these layers of stress just to get a licence

The truth is, knowing something and practicing it are two different things, after going through their screenings and driving classes and whatnot.. Does that really make anyone a better driver?.. Would the fact that I have a valid driver's license authenticated by all the safety organisations in Nigeria, make me slow down at a roundabout?... Would it make me slow down at the sight of a Zebra crossing?.. It wouldn't necessarily make me do so... My point is, good driving is more of a subjective concept.... Some people don't drive well because they are just naturally insensitive, callous and indifferent people... Or let's even consider those that drink and drive... What's to say a guy doesn't leave the licensing office with his valid licence and that same night goes to the bar, drinks to stupor and the next thing he is swerving along 3rd mainland bridge.

I think they should place more effort on public sensitization of road safety, instead of sort of putting the cart before the horse by making it unusually difficult and expensive to get a license...create consistently catchy TV commercials and campaigns that border on road safety / driving standards... Imagine coughing out 15k just to get a license.. or packing your new car athome for months and jumping from bus to bus because you're waiting for your license.

I think they can do better

You are very right about this. Sensitizing has a long way to go, just like you said, knowing something and practicing it are two different things. But that does not mean they should cancel the standard procedure of obtaining a license. I believe everything works together in ensuring safety of the people and competency of drivers. They should just find ways to fast things up, and make the standard procedures work as expected.

Yeah right.
I can't say they don't take bribes because some people's experiences with them might be the other way around, lol. However, I'm certain that 80% of the time they won't collect bribe. Meanwhile, I've never seen them collecting bribes.

Meh, can't work here. First, you have to attend Driving classes (theoretical for 2 weeks), then do the written test (usually computer-based) and if you pass that, you can do your road-test. After all that, they only give you a Provisional Driving license (PDL), for a year, before you get your Driver's license (if you've managed not to get any traffic violations or tickets under your PDL). . .

In as much as I get where you're coming from regarding how some Nigerians(those at the receiving ends) would feel about the implementation of something like what you have up here. However, I still believe enforcing such law by taking certain measures, and covering loopholes would go a long way.

True, it is typical of a lot of Nigerians to want to jump procedures and cut corners. But if jumping procedures go wrong would result to the person trying to jump losing a lot. And cutting corners would go wrong 70% of the time, I think people will start having a rethink.

Meanwhile, don't you think, "Nigerians don't deserve good things" is too strong? Well, I'm a Nigerian, and we deserve good things.

Jail?

When you can just settle the officers who caught you be the road?

Certainly not in Nigeria.

The only way we can have sane drivers on the road is if we adopt the American style of obtaining driver's license.

I'm not sure of how it works, but we can give it a try.

Americans have the technology to manage drunk driving on the road but we don't and I'm afraid corruption won't let us reach that point.

We have been copying the wrong things from the West, i think this is a right thing to adopt.

Anyone who goes to jail for an offense like that in a Nigeria of today is an OZUO.

Vehicle Inspection officers rarely take bribes. I'm not trying to pick on you or something, but why would you suggest something you don't even understand?

Entertainment / Re: How Many Upcoming Artists Do U Know by BOLAJIAJANI(m): 2:44pm On Nov 23, 2014
I know a lot of upcoming artistes, they include family, friends, and what have you. And just like you pointed out, most of them are nothing musically, but they don't know this. Perhaps, it's because commercial music gives room for such rubbish. But they should at least hit the mainstream before churning out such. Maybe, it's because they receive positive appraisals from people. But the thing is, people won't appraise you accordingly, if they see that you wouldn't be pleased(in case they need to do so negatively).

Looking at the situation again, I think they are just empty musically. And it's probably the hope of a better tomorrow that the music business promises through the artistes in the know. No, it's not a bad idea to want to make money, and, or fame. But if you can't do music, then you can't do it, and vice versa, there is no door number three to it.

Personally, I can't advise anybody to stop music, I can only tell them ways of getting better if they really want to hear where they're erring. And the truth is, sometimes people do blow with their nonsense, but they just have to put a bit of professionalism and s.p.u.n.k into it.

Meanwhile, some of the upcoming artistes I know are also really good. In fact, I listen to upcoming artistes that dish out stuffs(I like to listen to) on repeat.

May God bless everyone's hustle.

.ng is so good though. Think of all the domains that could end in -ing. Like shoppi.ng, dati.ng, etc.

Also, it's the extra characters that make it annoying when we have to settle for .com.ng
or hacks like ---ng.com. In this Twitter age, extra characters matter.

NIRA is wasting .ng's potential.

@MissMeiya, I believe you already know why it's expensive(@bold). .ng TLDs have lots of potentials, and they are really good for domain hack which you stated above.

I would gladly pay for a .ng or any TLD(I can use to make a perfect domain hack) even if it's $200, if I had the resources to make one of my ideas work.

Meanwhile, I believe it is plain silly to pay that much for .ng, if you are not really making that much from your website. And I'm sure some people would pay for .ng when other TLD(s) are better suited for the job. Na dem sabi.

Onegai: Thanks. You don't have to be an artist to draw or learn, a lot of graphic artist would benefit from it. Overseas, graphic arts learn Art skills, but in Nigeria, we just buy a mac or download PS and CorelDraw. It usually shows the lack of drawing skills and design skills afterwards.
You are welcome, and what you wrote about some graphic artists in Nigeria(and other places) is true. But, personally, what I do not have now is time. However, by God's grace in the next 4years I'd be going into game design and development.

So, if I'm still alive by 2015 to that time, I'd have to take art classes and immerse myself in related arts to the field. And one thing I'm sure of is practice makes perfect; The more we do something the more we get better in it.

I told the woman I was aware of the waiting and I'd no problem with it. I convinced myself that I didn't need to be scared since I did nothing wrong except drinking. So, I waited at the reception for the cops whom arrived about 45 minutes later. To cut the long story short, when the cops came, they asked me to follow them to their station to drop my statement which I obliged. When we got to the station, their previous friendly faces became very unfriendly. After I'd told them what I knew about the woman and what she told me, the cops questioned me about the smell of booze from my breath. There was no need for me to lie, so I told them the truth. But, they went ahead to do a test on me which I failed. I didn't fail the alcohol behavioural test but, I did fail the bloodstream alcohol limit test.

Once I failed the test, the cops had a propaganda that I must have hit the woman because I was drunk, and I only took her to the hospital for help due to guilty conscience. So, I was detained as a suspect. Few weeks later, trials started, and during the course of this, I found out that the lady I'd supposedly hit was a prosecutor. On the night of her demise, she had been working late at her office, and her car must have broken down when she was driving home at night. After which she probably decided to work home or get some help.

Well, by the end of the trials which I pleaded innocent all along, I was found guilty. And due to conflict of interest, I was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labour over a crime I didn't commit. My whole life shattered right in front of me, I'd only seen this kind of situation in movies. I'd never once thought that it could happen to someone in reality not to talk of happening to myself. During my trials, I thought the police force and the judicial system couldn't sentence an innocent man like me to jail, I thought they would do some investigation and in no time I would be a freeman. But, I was wrong. . . Someone told me that if I'd pleaded guilty that my sentencing would have been more lenient since I was a first time offender but, I couldn't lie on myself or plead guilty over a crime I didn't commit.

"That was my story." Said John.

"Thanks for your time, hopefully when we broadcast this, people would hear your story and help might come to you." Said the lady opposite John.

The woman opposite John Emeka was a journalist that worked with a broadcasting corporation. She contacted John few weeks earlier and told him that she had heard his story and would love to help him. She further stated that her name was Miss Juliana Simmons and that she was a journalist with RTWTV. At first John was hesitant but Juliana encouraged him. However, John never got how she became aware of his predicament.

*Emeka nodded his head in reply*

"ehm, before I leave. . .Mr John, what was your hesitation all about when I first contacted you?

"Miss Juliana, you see when you contacted me weeks ago about my story and how you believed in it. And that you were going to help, I didn't want to concede because I see this whole situation as a cross I've to bear. I believe that all those years I led a not so good life, I must have influenced one or two persons badly which had probably led to their detriment or still going to do so later. I think this is my punishment for all the wrongs that I have done. That I'm sorry for, and if I could turn back the hands of time, I'd probably sail a different sea. But, sadly I don't have that luxury."

This is off my blog.

"Next time you see somebody in need of help on the highway, think twice. Otherwise, you just might end up another victim of circumstance."

At the reception of the prison, John sat with rasp attention. But, had a blank stare at the visitor who was sitting before him.

"Are you ready?" The woman sitting opposite him asked.

"Yes, I'm." John replied.

"Ok, start at the count of 3." The woman replied.

"1, 2, 3"

My name is John Emeka and I've been a prisoner for the past four years. Before I became a prisoner, I was a banker whose salary was in the 6 figure range. I lived comfortably in one of the nicest location in the country. I had the best life could offer, and I really enjoyed life, but to a fault. I partied almost every night, and on weekends I partied overnight. I thought I'd arrived, I didn't think life was about partying, drinking and womanizing alone. But, I was of the opinion that there was no point in not living life to the fullest while one still can. However, I was wrong because everything calls for moderation and I'm sure that the person who invented the quote, "living life to the fullest" wouldn't have approved of living a reckless life which was the kind of life I lived.

It all started on the fifth of July four years ago. The day was a Friday, and as usual by 9 0'clock in the night I got to the club and minutes later I'd started with the clubbing. But, I was feeling somehow on that day, my interaction with people was on the low. I couldn't drink much, I only drank slightly above the legal alcohol limit allowed in the bloodstream of drivers. Normally, I drank thrice the legal alcohol limit which made the quantity I'd on the fifth of July normal in my bloodstream. By 11.30PM I decided to leave the club which was very unusual for me because on Fridays I always spent the night over and returned back to my home by 3AM the next morning. I left the club in my car by 11.40PM, and by 11.50PM I was on highway 99.

One thing about highway 99 is, by 11PM every night one could only see a handful of cars and one or two or no pedestrian at all. Towards 12PM, the highway was always as dry as a desert save for one's car and sometimes another night crawler either in a vehicle or just walking. I hadn't elapsed 3 minutes on highway 99 when I spotted a strange figure ahead with my car's full lights. At that point, I reduced my pace. When I got closer to the strange figure ahead by the roadside, it was the body of a woman, she was soaked in blood and was shaking. I stopped my car and wound down.

"Help Me." She muttered.

I didn't need anyone to tell me that she was in great pain. So, I got out of my car to help her since I couldn't just leave her to die on the highway. I carried her with her blood dripping over my clothes and I dropped her on the back-seat of my car to take her to the nearest hospital. She thanked me, and briefly explained how she was hit by an over speeding driver. She told me she managed to drag herself to the roadside and that two other vehicles had passed her but didn't wait to help. All along her explanation, she was barely audible and I noticed that the explanation was taking a toll on her. So, I asked her to keep quiet and I assured her that she was going to be alright.

Fifteen minutes later we got to the hospital, and she was rushed to the intensive care unit of the hospital. But, some minutes afterwards, one of the nurse that took her into the intensive care unit came out to announce her death. I was bereaved even though she was no relative of mine. Her death saddened me because she seemed innocent and I hate to see innocent people die just like that. While I was pacing around and blaming myself how her life could have been saved if I had gotten to the highway earlier, another hospital official came to tell me I needed to wait whilst the cop came around to get a statement from me. Exactly then was when it daunted on me that I was treading on slippery grounds. I'd been drinking all night, and I knew I'd gone above the legal alcohol limit and that could implicate me.

To be continued. . .

To start with a 24yr old person is not a kid, and they can pretty much make decisions by themselves. Like someone suggested age isn't the threshold for maturity, because he's 24(you're just a year older) doesn't make him naïve.

However, I get part of where you are coming from, and it's only normal for you to want what you think is best for your brother. But, if he feels and believe he's doing the right thing, sister, I really don't see why you should work your nerves on it.

I know from what you stated, he's not making enough money to run a family and also support himself through school. But, I doubt it's just about that, I think(not sure) you feel that the girl isn't right for your brother which can be deduced from the way you wrote, "She's an illiterate", "She's quite older than him."

Nevertheless, the following questions should be looked into:

Why is he marrying the girl, is it because it's the right thing to do even though he's not really into her? Or is it because it's the right thing to do, he feels strongly and definite about the positive outcome of the relationship and he's also in love with her?

I like to believe it's the latter because there are only so many people that would go through with marriage just because they popped someone.

Jaynec, my advice to you is, try to show support to your brother instead of acting like he dissapointed the family when it's not like he stole a goat from the market. If you keep acting this way like you've got a panic attack or something, he's not going to open up to you.

BTW, your brother don't have to do a marriage with the girl right now. They can just do a light-weight introduction between family, stay together to take care of the baby and figure things out. But, don't try to separate them especially when the two parties believe strongly that they have everything under control.

Wow! Actually, Nairaland is a discussion forum for almost anything discussable. Moreover, what would a family board be doing here if not for the purpose of discussing family issues.

People discuss about issues like this to get advice on how to deal with the issues from others. And by so doing providing information for others that need help one way or the other as well.

Uyi, if I were in your situation, I would have done the same thing you did. But, I still can't fault your sister for being the cause of why the guy left because she saw things differently.

I know that you mentioned how she'd been bringing in friends prior to when your story happened. But, I reckon you didn't stop her 'cause you had no problem with her bringing in her friends.

My previous point is because you didn't stop her doesn't mean that she can't do the same to you. She brought in her friends which she could vouch for. And they probably were not directly or indirectly connected to any problem tied to your family. However, the guy you wanted to harbour is a friend to someone who was directly connected to some chaos you guys experienced in the past.

Of course, it was very wrong of your sister to judge the guy with your cousin's character since they are two different persons. But believe me, a lot of people that I know personally would have done the same thing your sister did. In her own mind she was protecting the family.

My advice; let it slide and avoid forcefully allowing people others don't approve of to stay around 'cause if anything bad happens due to their staying around, you are going to bear the consequences.

Webmasters / View Websites Remotely From Different Geographic Locations Using Geopeeker by BOLAJIAJANI(m): 3:46am On Aug 10, 2013
I know it's somehow when we need to check how a particular website would display to people from a particular location. And we've to start worrying about the ip, proxies and whatnot. Moreover, getting some websites fooled takes more time than necessary. Plus, nobody really likes to resort to calling friends abroad to help them check. Hence, the reason I searched for a more better solution, GeoPeeker.

How I Came Across GeoPeeker

Some days ago, I wanted to see what ads a particular website would display for people viewing outside my location. I was about to begin all the hassle when something came to my mind. I felt there should be a tool that does this perfectly. Without further ado, I landed my browser on a search engine, and within minutes I found what(GeoPeeker) I was searching for.

Why Would You Need To View Websites From Different Geographic Locations Remotely?

If you are checking this page, I believe you already know the purpose of this post. But, for the sake of people who are just curious to know more. I guess it's only right for me to write some instances where this is needed.

1). It can be used to ensure that the DNS is propagating properly
2). It can be handy if you write codes(to change contents) for a website based on location. e.g. you could want a different greeting shown for people visiting from a particular location, you could even have a different outlook for people from other location(s) etc.

What Is GeoPeeker?

GeoPeeker is a tool that was developed by Christopher Lewis using the Dinkly PHP Framework. It remotely views a site from different geographic locations and displays how they appear. This is very helpful when starting out a website, as it can be used to ensure that the DNS is propagating properly. It's also pretty handy for troubleshooting CDN and caching issues.

What you can do with GeoPeeker
View localization differences
Check if a site is available in other countries
Get the IP address of a site from different locations
See if a site is down for just you, or for everyone
Check global DNS propagation
Troubleshoot content caching issues

How To Use GeoPeeker?

GeoPeeker is a very easy tool to use, which comes with a nice and smooth GUI. To start using GeoPeeker, you have to first visit http://www.geopeeker.com/. After getting to the index page, you'll be provided with an address box. All you have to do is, enter the web address you would like to view from other geographic locations remotely and push the go button. e.g you enter blog.onegist.com. and press enter or use the submit button(go) as the case may be. Depending on how fast your network is, your last action should generate another page almost immediately. The last page generated should bring out six different frames, showing the images of the web address you entered previously as if you were viewing from six different geographic locations. You can now zoom the images which are rendered using WebKit with a screen width of 1280 pixels.

NOTE: GeoPeeker is still in a kind of beta version presently and as such can only view from just six different locations(San Jose, California, United States, Ashburn, Virginia, United States, Sydney, Australia, São Paulo, Brazil, South America, Ireland, Europe, Singapore, Asia) at the moment. Although, when I contacted Chris, he said he's working very hard to set up additional nodes in different countries. And he also has additional features on mind.
