CareerRe: For Bankers, Ex Bankers And Bankers To Be by boneruns(m): 2:15pm On Oct 12, 2015
Let me add my 2 and half years of experience working in a bank.

I work in one of the Risk Management sections of the Bank (Risk Management can either be Credit, Market or Operational). I can understand what people in branch, most especially the Marketers go through; it isn't an easy stuff. The ATM Custodians have their own ; they must ensure ATMs are up and paying.

Well, I'm actually enjoying where I am, there is career development and advancement, I can switch to other industries and apply my experience. I've seen colleagues who left to non-banking industries.

Some people here have said working in the Head Office is better, but they forgot that staff in HOs pass through different work stress. Almost all banks in Nigeria have their HO on the island. Traffic is a serious issue on the island. Imagine staying in the traffic for over 2hours before home. This is almost a daily occurrence. One has to leave home before 6am to avert traffic. People stay behind in the office till 9pm before leaving.

Banking is actually challenging, people who left banking to other industries didn't find hard to blend.

I'm passively searching for non-banking jobs even though I'm comfortable where I am. I've had an exit plan since I joined banking. I have period of time to stay.

the value of the scholarship is about 10,000 pounds and the tuition fees. it is generally requested that the tuition fee should not exceed 20,000 pounds else you will have to pay up the difference on your own. you will also be given a flight ticket and a refund of your visa fees, so keep all the necessary receipts.
Thank you.

You sounded like a previous beneficiary.

Please do you have an idea of what the award expiration period may be? Because most good UK schools would have concluded September admission, and next admission period may be in September 2016.

Like I Promised. Here is the transcript. She didn't waste time at all she went straight to business. VO was probably under supervision because her superior was by her side monitoring the interview.
12 inches: Good morning
VO: Good morning
VO: so you're going to Iowa state university of science and technology (ISU)
12 inches: Yes
VO: For what course?
12 inches: for an MSc in transportation Engineering
VO: Why ISU?
12 inches: ISU is a well ranked school involved in transportation engineering in the U.S. The Midwest transportation Centre which carries out transportation engineering research for the Midwestern states is located at ISU and ISU plays a lead role in transportation Engineering research for the Midwestern states and I believe this will help me proffer solutions to transport issues and challenges in Nigeria. The experience and exposure with a faculty with strong industry participation will really help my career.
VO:How did hear of ISU?
12 inches:Online through times higher education.com, Google usnews.com etc
VO:How many schools did u apply to?
12 inches : 4 ( in reality 5... I wanted her to believe only one school denied me admission but it was 2). So I began to name the schools and she cuts me short.
VO:So how many gave u admission?
12 inches: 3 out of 4
VO: So out of the the 3 why did u pick ISU?
12 inches: *I was already getting frustrated because she had asked that question before* So I began again that the faculty had strong exposrue and experience in transportation engineering research. They carry out research for the * she now cuts me short*
VO: You keep mentioning experience and exposure......
12 inches: Frankly Engineering is about experience and exposure and working as a graduate assistant there will give me this and help my career. There is no point re-inventing the wheel. Most of the transportation issues we face in Nigeria have already been surmounted in the U.S and I bliv there is a lot to learn frm the lecturers at ISU in solving transportation issues in Lagos.
VO: * her supervisor now smiling* Why is that u picked a school in the Midwest and not *VO cuts herself short.
When did you graduate?
12 inches: 2011
VO: What have u been doing since then?
12 inches: I work as an engineer in so and so with so and so roles. I have also worked in so and so as a ****** engineer.
VO: Who will be paying your fees?
12 inches: I have a graduate assistantship, tuition scholarship and stipends that shud cover all my estimated expenses. My brother is also willing to provide for any additional expenditure that may arise during my course of study
VO: What does your broda do?
12 inches: He is a **** engineer in *****.
VO: Come and pick ur visa at this location I have circled
She didn't give me much details after abt where to pick it. She already knows me I'm a la cram la pour student. Whatever she asks I av prepared answers to.
12 inches: Thank you very much.

I want to Thank God, thank my parents my siblings,My fiancée, the NL family, walspring slimmy, etc you know yourself. All those who av made this possible. This thread has been so educative.
My advice to anyone with dreams to study in the u.s. Keep at it regardless. You will get discouragement from ur family and even your closest friends as regards ow costly and how impossible it is. But if it is God will for you to go, he will make a way and nobody can stop him.
This is good and motivational.

Congrats

This was my story few months back. Family and friends discouraged me hence they refused to sponsor me cuz I'm a woman who should be thinking about marriage and not education. I was determined to sponsor myself come what may with God on my side. I'm getting my i-20 soon from Murray State University and I've stopped discussing this topic with family and friends. I'll surprise them with my visa soon by God's grace.
The earlier you stop telling people about it, the better. It is your personal dream and you alone can make it come through. Remember that no one actually cares about you until you make it. God bless you
Thank you.

I must commend everyone on this thread. I have been a secret follower since over two years now.

Each time I read through this thread, that burning desire of postgraduate study in USA makes me feel I should begin the process urgently. But, the distractions in Nigeria are not allowing me to concentrate on this pursuit.

I work and earn averagely okay in Nigeria, but the dream of some young employee is to have a comfortable apartment, a nice car and other exuberance, which are my distractions. I had wanted to save up some amount and rely on GA or TA for this academic pursuit, which I believed would turn out to be successful.

Within me, I would not have academic fulfillment without PG study in US or other educationally advanced countries. I pray this turn out to be successful .

I just need motivation and courage, maybe something would turn out good next year. I realized that whenever I tell some people about this plan, even family members, they tend to discourage me.

I will keep peeping into this thread, as I have always done secretly

May God help me! Amen.

CareerRe: Working With The Big4, Your Experience. by boneruns(m): 5:04pm On Jun 29, 2015
My issue with the Big-4, most especially PwC and KPMG is their requirement for 5 credits one sitting O'level, irrespective what the prospective employee graduated from the university.

It pained me that I didn't start my career with PwC after I got to the final stage interview in 2011, I was dropped because I had two sittings O'level.

Anyway it is gone now. I wouldn't mind joining the firm as an experienced prospective job seeker. I just love the firm, I've met some of them and I think it isn't a bad place to work.

Kockane:
Hey, what a sharp memory you got there. It's hard to believe I'd still come across someone who'd remember me from back then on this forum.

Well the reality is, no option of study leave for me anymore. I'd have to resign and come back after the completion of my program, which may be subject to vacancies in the system when I get back. A bird in hand, they say, is worth more than two in the bush. I'd rather stay back and try to combine. From the suggestions on this thread, I've started making exhaustive enquiries though.
That's is good to hear.

I followed that thread from start to finish because I might be in similar dilemma. I enrolled in Masters programme here in Nigeria and I'm about to finish.

Were you able to get refund from Hull?

Hello Kockane,

Congratulations on your promotion to the next level. I remember you contemplated dumping GT job for Hull MBA, and you were advised to take study leave, if possible. Please what happened? Why are changing your plan? Because I followed that thread from start to finish and I gained reasonable advice.

Nigeria does not have any nuclear weapons.

What you would have seen in the past (especially during the Babangida era) was a bagman. There was always one near General Babangida and Admiral Aikhomu.
A military officer told me something about this bagman. He said the bagman always go anywhere the President goes, and this bagman stays somewhere he can't be seen. Also the bag contains codes/instructions concerning bombs.

But the way he said it seemed like it still exist.

Please how true is this?
BusinessRe: GTB Mobile Money Transfer - How Secure Is It? by boneruns(m): 11:33pm On May 25, 2015
bola4dprec:
the platform is very secure and safe #1 to initiate any transaction on your account you need to register your phone number with GTBank meaning that unregistered GSM number will not be able to transact
#2 all transaction made on the platform have reference that is the beauty of BVN if hoodlums hijacks your phone nd ATM any account that receives money will be track with BVN let me stop here
Firstly, does it mean as a customer, I'm automatically enabled, without my consent to perform this transaction on my registered line?

Secondly, you should understand that at the first phase of BVN, the target is to ensure customers are enrolled for BVN, and these numbers are not yet mapped to accounts owned by customers. This would come during second phase BVN.

In conclusion, the bank faces risk of provision for funds lost due to fraudsters in this process since I didn't subscribe to it. And, for now, BVN can not show accounts linked to it.

So this process is still porous.
BusinessRe: GTB Mobile Money Transfer - How Secure Is It? by boneruns(m): 11:21pm On May 25, 2015
This is surely a massive security risk. I don't think the control is adequate.

4 last digits isn't a proper authetication means, and as such, there's no control.

I think GTB was too quick to go live on this procedure without doing proper risk assessments to determine operational risks inherent in this new process. One should have expected such issues are discovered in their controlled-pilot phase and not during implementation.

I expect the Bank to include a valid authentication measure, either by PIN (which could be different from ATM PIN) or a timed OTP.

It takes little effort for a fraudster to hack and transfer funds from a GTB account.

I think it is against CBN's regulation for an unsolicited service such as this, if one doesn't subscribe to it. This can lead to reputation damage and regulatory sanction.
PoliticsRe: Pls Do Banks Get Alert Details Of Customers Atm Withdrawls by boneruns(m): 4:09pm On May 04, 2015
Yes they do. There's a database that stores ATM transaction details of customers. And there's security to prevent unauthorized access to this database.
It isn't infringement.
