This article is an eye opener and there was really lack of funding for the project with all the banks rejecting to fund the scheme except ecobank. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/03/politics-of-lagbusbrt-management/ |
AjanleKoko: Ideally, for the bus system to be efficient, it needs to have its own management. This idea of involving NURTW members in the scheme was always going to be a problem. They are used to doing whatever they like. They caused the problem of the white buses also introduced earlier in ikoyi and the island but they form a powerful block that you cannot do away with them easily. Here is a report that explains the whole problem affecting the system and even the lagbus too was not spared of nepotism and profit induced ideas. I will post the other evaluation report later and one of the problems was contracting vehicle procurement from india so they had spared part supply problems and service expert to repair the vehicles. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/03/politics-of-lagbusbrt-management/ |
You don't say!!! I hope people are reading this o! This is exactly the kind of unwholesome management practice I suspected was being practised. So why will the driver or other staff refuse when people demand to board the buses despite being overcrowded already?
The average Nigerian establishment only cares about profits and revenue so am not surprised by the overloading if that is the kind of contract they signed with them. Same way delta state government is spending huge sums of money to introduce e payment for her bus service but neglects the aspect of developing an all round efficient and intelligent transit system. I think we have discussed this before and Naptu2 was able to explain why the white buses failed in Victoria island, ikoyi and those places. I am not in support of throwing these commercial drivers away but we have to do away this kind of profit induced strategies to get better quality from them. When you observe them in their park then it is the usual first come first load system they use. They even have the freedom to withdraw their bus from the system outside the peak period due to issues like repairs, lateness or whatever instead of them having a fixed amount of bus that should operate according to the signed contract with the state. The only solution is to give them a job within the transport industry after you contract the service to bus companies that would guaranty their present income plus other benefits. By Gods grace we will surely make a difference. |
temitope23: Even the picture of the brt bus you there is still okay compare to the company where i worked. The company's mode of operation is just like molue we were told to stop at each bus-stop to load with a ticketer in the bus. It is a serious offence if you don't load the bus to its maximum capacity. Then it means they have used the wrong strategy of contracting the service by amount of passengers carried instead of the distance covered or scheduling over a certain time-frame at a fixed agreed amount. With this system then just kiss quality service goodbye as they the operators are at a liberty to maximize profit and no incentive to improve or develop the system. Do you know how many years the contract is contracted and development targets set for the operators?. |
The best option is for us to go our separate ways but as one poster mentioned, it seems doing so in peaceful circumstance is not possible. The only option to make it possible is to settle some important issues that i would equate with the final status issues in the isreali palestine conflict. They are 1) Access to the sea 2) What happens to the offshore crude after disintegration 3) Sharing of existing national wealth and infrastructure 4) What happens to the federal and state debt 5) What happens to existing private properties and investments 6) Dredging of river Niger 7) Drawing up the right borders for the countries coming out of the nation. If we can sort the issues above and any other burning issue then peaceful disintegration might be possible else we have to buy our freedom with our blood. |
kingoflag: I totally agree with you, and am myself worried about how fraud and misuse of the system could be made when we know of the corrupt nature of present day Nigeria. But, I am even more worried about the Central Govt's ability to be able to track, setup, and harass its citizens when so much power is concentrated in its hands. Nigeria should only give Unique numbers and then strengthen the power of her investigative agencies. Just Yesterday, I was gonna send some money to my girlfriend through Western Union, the agent asked for my ID (which had never happened before), I gave it to her, then she proceeded to scan it and take my picture! F*UK THAT! I took my ID back and insisted she delete my info from their database while I looked. She refused and claimed she couldnt; I called the Police and made a scene. When the Police came they made her delete every info she had put in their Computer since I hadnt completed the transaction.I feel you but there is nothing we can do really about it except we will be schemed out of these services. Government monitors their citizens even without collecting biometric data. China, Iran, India, USA, UK, North Korea comes to mind readily and Nigeria will surely head there someday. Both western union and moneygram requires your national ID, passport or drivers license i think to send money. That was the first time for you under the new system so they will do all that and do we have option since sending money is damn important to us. I understand you and that was why i felt bad when i was giving my data out in order to use a registered simcard in Nigeria then. i don't think we had any option, same way INEC is collecting peoples data and JAMB is collecting biometric data of students in Nigeria. You can't go to uk without given them your biometric info so for me this is the future and as you said we should be worried about fraud and misuse of the system. Just like the previous poster @jmslimx above you mentioned not linking it with a payment service but there is nothing we can do really than voice it out here. Except we reach-out to them or protest, they will always do what they want to do. The unique ID kinked to other services is what we need but we also need to find a foundation to make it unique, facial recognition etc or biometric data. Biometric data collection is the new fad in Nigeria now hence why it is lumped with the NIN process and will you blame master card when this is more of a business opportunity for them. They are coming as the superior partner and i trust our incompetent civil servants to do according to their bidding without thinking properly about it. @mark-ren talked about working with local partners and knowledge transfer but i believe we can never do those things when there is money to always throw about to get what we always want. We are not ready to learn or develop as long as crude oil money is flowing in to do our bidding. |
EmmyDe25: I really dont think the BRT buses are meant for all... if you cant stand d delay, you should then make use of the other means. More reason(s) why we have commercial buses around. You dont expect the BRT buses to cater for the needs of all commuters in an overly populated city like lagos. Mind you, the project was introduced to subsidize the huge amount of money lagosians spend on transport, and complement d activities of the commercial buses... not to substitute them. I can't even remember d last time i boarded a BRT bus...... It is what you and i know, if you are in a hurry to catch up with an appointment, d BRT wouldnt be your best bet. I really dont buy into the headings you cast for this story. It is actually meant for anyone who wants to use it, i can decide to travel to Ghana by bus or airplane as the final choice lies with me in relation to my present circumstance. I agree with you that it was not meant to cater for everyone and should be in conjunction with the other operators or modes of transport. This is not a Lagos state versus them issue and we are discussing this thing here because we all desire for our transport system to be efficient. The issue here is about proper management of the blue line, i have never used the ones colored red but their buses are far better and they are managed well with room for improvement. Please visit the Lagbus website and see for yourself. Anywhere in the world where routes or bus service are contracted to private individuals then you will have a low quality service and mismanaged system. The lagbus uses bus companies to operate the areas assigned to them and you can see the difference. Proper scheduling, route planning, bus numbering system, proper fare model, service contract usage, bus timetables and various delivery options. The blueline is not working like the lagbus service and this same idea can be extended to the commercial operators without turning them to the brt system. During rush hours two to four buses can always drop and load at the same time instead of one bus at a time. In this case you have four points of entry and they all leave, then you have another set of two or three leaving at spaced intervals. Ticket sale and inspection can actually cause delay but there are strategies to overcome that like using electronic cards ( Lagbus does this ). You can move one bus every ten minutes or move three buses every twelve minutes but at the end of one hour, the number of passengers moved by this two options are different. The blueline needs proper planing, improvement and adequate management to meet up to present challenges. Our problem has always been implementation and management since we do not lack ideas or introducing laudable initiatives. Rossikk: Have you considered sending an email to Fash and his guys? They have their digits on the LASG website. No i have not considered that but thanks for the suggestion and i will see to it. |
@kingoflag Thanks for your write up and i don't think we are too far apart from the points we are both trying to make. I do support the issues you raised above but you have skipped the process or implementation aspect of it. Concerning bio-metric data, the centre already has it through the new e-passport process. The same united states you are referring to do not have their electoral body or telecommunication companies taking the biometric data of the citizens ( not so sure though ). The system above can always be manipulated and it is this manipulation that presents the need to use biometric data for unique identification. People had multiple voters registration cards, multiple national ID because there were no security features or central database to manage the exercise properly. Even common jamb takes biometric data of Nigerian students so i don't really see the fuse about this whole thing. Nothing stops me from having multiple Identity with the system you created above or how will you ensure the uniqueness of your proposal. Master card is only a provider of the technology and i don't think they will be having any access to our biometric data. A system is only efficient to the extent the managers want it to be efficient and without biometric data capture, we might just mess up the whole thing like INEC did with the voters registration. |
staaari: Good Idea but wrong procedure.Do we have a local alternative to the service master card is providing? |
Nokia should follow this up with an app market for this platform so that popular and local apps can be created to draw and keep consumers apart from the price and design. |
webdezzi: we need a database system, so each person should be uniquely identifiable with all past criminal records. That is what the NIN stated in this thread is for, unique identification and national database. The security forces like the police will take care of criminal databases and they can be linked or referenced if need be. |
We don't follow proper regulation because of lack of control, corruption and greediness. It is high time we pay serious attention to safety issues in this country. |
^^ We just bloody have too many deadwoods in every agencies in this country, from police to pensions, local government, nitel, nipost, nepa, nnpc, customs and every place you can think off. |
Thanks. Be expecting your response. I'll try to do some homework from here too
This is all i can find for now but i think you will surely find something from them so just save them and study it later. lagos brt system in worldbank http://web.worldbank.org/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/NEWS/0,,contentMDK:23025996~menuPK:141311~pagePK:34370~piPK:34424~theSitePK:4607,00.html reducing congestion strategy http://luts.epfl.ch/ Simple introduction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_transport_bus_service http://www.reinventingtransport.org/2008/10/bus-systems-that-work.html brt brazil model http://www.urbanhabitat.org/node/344 http://www.pps.org/great_public_spaces/one?public_place_id=613 example of what lamata should be http://www.hsl.fi/EN/Pages/default.aspx How to set up and run brt http://www.itdp.org/microsites/bus-rapid-transit-planning-guide/ http://www.nbrti.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_rapid_transit city examples http://www.corvallisoregon.gov/index.aspx?page=167 http://bmetro.cob.us/routes Cclick on each route for more info ) service provider http://www.goalsystems.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=164&Itemid=221&lang=en comparing different models http://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/1998/wp_039.aspx |
onandon: I wish this card could also serve as a drivers license, imagine after registering and paying for my drivers license since March I still haven't been given a date to come "capture". This country is sickening. It is not done that way, assuming this card was in operation then your NIN number is what the agency issuing the drivers license would have used to verify the data capture for the national ID and no need to redo another one with them. Only one data capture to serve them all within a country and that is how it is obtainable the world over. |
Everybody knows what rush hour means and we cannot used that to overlook the other sore aspects of the system. I don't think we should even be having overcrowding if it is properly managed. The pictures shown above are those of metros or trains but not bus like we have in the BRT system. It is possible to manage rush hours but it will come at a loss of revenue or profits so that's why it is mostly left that way. The BRT system needs to be properly managed well and we will not have issues like those mentioned in the original post. There will always be crowding during rush hours but this is more like an artificial induced rush hour than the system reaching is maximum servicing point during this periods. @nu_well I will check for that later, UN or Worldbank has a comprehensive model but i will research later. |
^^ It is mostly the same data captured as with the international passport process but they can include more to make it far reaching. Also from their website there will be three document identification to proof your address, date of birth and identity. The process is ongoing right now and there are one location for each state of the federation, the one in Lagos is at alausa. They made mention of mobile centers but no info about that from their website and also if the Nigerian embassies can register Nigerians living abroad. |
^^ It will also help Nigerians to transact business online as there will not be any case of fraud when paying with this card. The sad thing is that this process has been going on when i visited the website but there is lack of awareness or drive for people to go and obtain their NIN. I am so happy for this and the potentials or opportunities that lies with it but we need to invest and upgrade technologically for this to be very effective. All those partners, agencies important point of identity usage need to upgrade and integrate into this system. Some of them are good to go like our banks, telecom companies but the others need considerable investment in IT and adequate training to make this work. I am talking about the ones that do not have the technological infrastructure to key in at the moment. The police for crime fighting Immigration for border control and all that The hospitals for proper health care delivery Road safety for proper drivers licensing and transport management FIRs for Taxation etc INEC for proper voting registration NPC for census and other demographic statistics Education management waec, Jamb and enrollment issues. Nipost for proper addressing system and identification. pension board so we don't get the recurring verification exercise CAC for proper company registration. We should do all these and ensure that you cannot do anything without a NIN, then the issue of ghost workers will be greatly reduced and different kind of frauds. |
The system has not been really managed well in my opinion, it is not different from the normal non BRT service if the operators are rendering their service based on per bus system. The truth of the matter is that the implementation should have been from the angle of licensing routes, areas through tenure, time or days slots to existing bus or transport operators. That is how a transportation system works, you license it to companies, give them a service contract to follow with penalties and set targets for development or milestones to meet as the years passes by. We have countless transport companies in Nigeria like ABC, Chisco, Young shall grow and all that. You license to them for three to five years and they bid for it again with other operators at the end of the contracted tenure. Through this system they will sit up or loose those contract to other operators in the system. You can do the same for the none BRT system and trust me things will not be as choatic as we have it today. Then empower ( is it LAWMA OR LAMATA ) to do the route, scheduling and price planning. They should be the one to negotiate and award contracts to service operators. Monitor them to follow the agreed contractual terms and to curb corruption the staffs of these service companies are fully contracted to the state or partially. To me the lagos state government is just throwing her legs into stuff that is meant for private management. |
The best thing to do is to create four sub-section . . . Islam. Christian, Atheist and traditional religion. Each sub-section is meant for those who practice those religion while the general one is for everyone to interact with each other. So with this arrangement, there will not be a issue of someone going to a subsection to cause problems or throw insults. |
We should first start by having a unique identification system and we can then build on that to create different options or solutions that caters for the various literacy level of the populace. |
This is very nice and a welcomed development, once this is done then the unique identity can be extended to all other identity services within the federation. |
slimyem: His point was it being a Non-nigerian name and Damasus is not as far as i know and i was just calling him out on his trivialising of something similar on another thread.Oh okay i get you know and you have really put him in his place then. |
slimyem: What do you think i was expecting? You should not have been wasting your time arguing with the shymexx guy if you had actually looked at the spelling of her name and shamed him instead for linking it to syria lol. |
vivian chinaza: I really hate to give or be given ultimatums. It turns my blood to blue. What you described above is a good example of what am talking about, they are needed sometimes to make your partner reasonable and sometimes see the bigger picture. |
I don't understand you...try and be lucid plss
In our culture and for what kneeling down signifies, it was not deemed fit that a man should kneel down to a woman unless it is culturally demanded. We do not by bypass this ideology even in the case presented above which relates to what you can do for love. Yes it turns out negative when the lady disrespects you or takes advantage of you because of this or when she is out of love. I don't think it will be a positive thing if a girl starts broadcasting to other men that you do kneel down for her. If you need to say sorry to a lady or express your love to her then a verbal communication is enough. People say most men who are against this idea of kneeling down say so out of pride and yes it could be termed so but there is nothing wrong with being proud and putting limit to things that could demean you or rub negatively on you in the future. |
As a last resort sometimes in resolving issues, they are needed if one partner is becoming too unreasonable. When given an ultimatum then you act on it based on the fact that it is reasonable or it is not and this will determine how you are going to react to it. You can either let it slide and dame the consequence or make your partner see reasons to why the ultimatum is not needed to resolve the issue. |
I don't think it is culturally right and from experience this act do turn back negatively on men in the future in most cases. So i would not advice any man to do this but take the verbal path to pass your message across to the female folks. It is women who should be doing the kneeling while when should doing it through verbal communication and not kneeling down for a woman. Yes it might be put of pride or cultural demand to have such mindset but there is sense in it and we should not dismiss this things because of superficial terms like love. |
freetowns: I never make discussions on any of my start ups on a forum. All I do is give a snippet, then any interested party can join. Like i said earlier, the site is ready to go live except for some changes that we need to do. We might hold back on going live wit d site untill we'v done all ads necessary. You mean the same start-up idea that you got from a thread created and presented by another member of this forum?. You are even creating a website before making all your plans ready or discussing with potential partners. No one is going to steal any idea from you as it is not even new and only government agencies maintain national libraries from my personal knowledge. You think students own the theses solely by themselves or its jointly owned with the relevant partners or companies?. Some of us have actually uploaded our bachelors and masters thesis in a national library so i do know what am talking about. Creating a national library is bigger than what you are drumming up here and hoping that it is your idea that you are going to profit from it is absurd. National libraries all over the world are not profit ventures sorry and there is no way a student will upload a thesis anywhere in the world not approved by the school. You actually need to work with most of the schools and the government to get this done, but let me leave you in your arrogance anyway since u don't discuss start-up ideas in a public forum. No wonder you dismissed the suggestion of having a team and real time programming skills, guy wake up and come down from the tall tree you are standing on. My 2 shillings |
