Update from SIGGY .ng

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd.) on Wednesday, February 9, requested that the management of tertiary institutions in the country make drug integrity tests a compulsory policy for students in order to curb the rising cases of drug abuse amongst youths, Siggy reports.

Marwa made the call during the launching of an anti-drug abuse initiative campaign tagged ‘Drug-free University Campaign’ at the University of Abuja, saying as part of the NDLEA effort to curtail drug abuse, it is proposing a partnership with all the tertiary institutions in the country to carry out drug integrity tests on both new and returning students.

The DG clarified that the drug test wasn't a punitive measure on students but an early detection tool to know the status of an individual’s drug use in order to apply appropriate intervention, timely treatment, and care. He further stated that he was hopeful that the University of Abuja would be its first partner to adopt the policy while others follow suit.

He explained that to achieve this, the university would have to create an NDLEA outpost on the campus where NDLEA operatives will be deployed to assist the university's authorities to scare off drug dealers and users within the university.

Education / Lady Narrates How She Spent 12 Years On A 4-year Course In OAU (Photos) by BornorBang: 12:06pm On Dec 27, 2021
Update from SIGGY .ng

A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) named Omobolanle Adenle has narrated how she spent 12-years on a 4-year course, Siggy reports.

Omobolanle gained gained admission to study Linguistics and African Languages in 2010, but instead of graduating in the 2014/2015 session, she graduated in 2021.

Narrating her ordeal to PUNCH correspondent, Adenle who is now an entrepreneur, said her challenges started from the first and second semesters spent on the OAU campus.

She said, “A journey that started in 2010 and finished in 2021. I thought I would finish with my mates in the year 2015 when I obtained admission to study Linguistics and African Languages in Obafemi Awolowo University in 2010, but my first and second semesters result were nothing to write home about after putting my best foot forward. So, I got discouraged.

“I thought I will obtain Jamb and change my course the following year which I tried but failed again, so I made up my mind to finish what I’ve started but it was almost late already.

“I couldn’t handle retaking courses and doing my main courses altogether, but I did it anyway and it was a disaster throughout – but I just can’t quit and it saddens my heart at that time.

“I felt like a total failure in life and everything academics saddens my heart then till I decided to find another interest that will fill up the grief I nurse in my heart daily.”

After the “failed” semesters, Adenle had to start a business to raise money for survival.

This time, she said, the move was successful as she was able to settle many bills, including school fees on her own.

She continued, “I decided to explore the business world with my almost collapsed academics then because I needed to start generating some extra income to sort out my school bills and my general well-being.

“My business became the only get away from the deep sadness I nurse on my academics, I finally found fulfillment beyond the four walls of the classroom – buying and selling different products and services.

“I became a professional at selling anything sellable on this earth and there’s no product or service under heaven that I can’t sell with ease and speed right now as a product manager and Digital Marketer, I mastered the art of selling from hawking different products after classes to my fellow students in female hostels in OAU.

“I was actively investing in myself beyond the four walls of the school while pursuing academics, I became so good in my craft that I won a business grant in 2018.

“I became a business mogul with two physical stores in Lagos State and Osogbo, Osun State till I shifted my focus to more of digital product recently and required no physical location in Osun State anymore. ”

Determined to be a graduate, Adenle returned to academics but failed again.

She narrated that she sailed through different hurdles before being allowed to complete her studies.

At the point she had retaken all the failed courses, one of her results was said to be missing again.

She said, “I was supposed to have an extra year to sort out all the courses I failed, but I failed again and had to come back again to retake some of the courses but I choose not to come back, I was tired already and told my part adviser that I’m done with school and I want to travel out because I was frustrated.

“I came back the following year after a year break and paid dearly with several medical reports before I was allowed to retake the courses two years later. And when I thought I was finally done to be fully cleared from OAU, one of my results got missing, an elective for that matter, and for over a year we were on it till I finally gathered the courage to retake it after which it was found after retaking the course.

“The shame was unbearable when every year that I thought I’ll be done left me hanging and then I learn patience, persistence, doggedness, and how to trust God with my life exclusively.”

According to Adenle, her ordeal thought her to believe in the divine set and never to be hard on herself.

Education / Covenant University Donates 30KVA Power Generator To Nigerian Police (Photo) by BornorBang: 6:13am On Dec 27, 2021
Update from SIGGY .ng

Christmas came early for the officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force, Onipanu Division, in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Council, when the Management of Covenant University, through her Community Development Impact Initiative Committee (CDIIC), donated a 30KVA power generating set to assist the Division in her quest to serve and protect lives of members of the community.

Speaking at the commissioning of the power generating set, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, said the gift was a way of reinforcing the University’s commitment to impacting the host community, as no organisation can exist in isolation.

Professor Adebayo, who led a delegation of the University Management to the commissioning, said that Covenant has chosen to remain intentional in her approach to community development initiatives from inception, which has been the reason that the University has staged numerous social, economic and health interventions in various areas of the community.

“Going into our 20th year, we are still conscious of our role in the development effort of our host community; thus, we are rededicating our effort in this regard,” he added. Professor Adebayo said the University had championed community development in areas such as rural electrification, provision of potable water systems, healthcare-related outreaches, and much more.

“The University recognises how essential electricity and security are in social and community development, thus the need to provide this token to the Division, and as a University, we will not relent in doing more towards making our local community a peaceable place to live and do business in,” the Vice-Chancellor added.

In his remark, the Area Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Muyideen Obe, appreciated the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr David Oyedepo, for the ‘wonderful Christmas gift’ coming at a very auspicious time, while assuring the gathering that the Command and Division will see this as a morale booster to improve on the service being rendered to the community.

ACP Obe said the multifaceted benefit that Covenant University has conveyed upon Ado-Odo/Ota community is one that cannot be underestimated, and as a result of their partnership in good governance, the Command would also improve her performance to deliver on expectations. “This will propel us to do more, and we cannot afford to let you and the entire community down,” he posited.

While thanking the State Commissioner of Police, CP Sikiru Bankole, for supporting the Command in crime-fighting, ACP Obe said the investment of Covenant University in the operations of the Police in Ota had spurred the Command to become a willing partner in advancing the course of crime-fighting and community policing.

The Chairman, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Council, Honourable Sherriff Adewale Musa, commended the Management of Covenant University for abiding by the biblical doctrine of bringing light to a dark world. According to him, it is the collaboration between the government and those in the private sector that makes governance work.

Honourable Musa appreciated the University’s involvement in filling the void identified in the community. “Giving is part of life, and Covenant has consistently taught her products to abide by that tenet, as exemplified by the 2021 graduating class donation of sanitation baskets to remove plastics wastes in the community,” he stated.

The Local Council Chairperson said some institutions had existed centuries and decades before Covenant, yet they could not boast of the kind of impact Covenant has brought to bear in the last 20 years in Ado-Odo/Ota community.

Education / We Don’t Have Money To Meet ASUU Demands At Once – FG by BornorBang: 9:25am On Dec 21, 2021
Update from SIGGY .ng

On Monday, the Federal Government through the Minister of Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba said resources were not enough to meet all the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at once, Siggy reports.

This is as the minister faulted claims of the union that the Federal Government was blackmailing it.

In the Minister’s words:

We cannot possibly be blackmailing them; we tried to explain to them that we will fulfil the agreements when we have the resources. Agreements have been signed and they are meant to be fulfilled.

But we do not have all the resources to meet all the demands at once. The thing is that we all are working together – ASUU and the Federal Government. The goal is to produce graduates, who will serve Nigeria, and to make sure that the academic calendar is running smoothly.

So, the government will always pay its dues; you do not have to go on strike to drive home your points. They need to know that it is not the government versus ASUU. It is about doing what is right. Let us use the resources as they come. There are lots of sectors that need attention.

All we are saying is that once there are resources, we will meet your needs; all you have to do is to keep the academic calendar running. So, please, where is the blackmail?

However, ASUU said it would not go on strike yet even though the government had failed to satisfactorily address all the issues raised in the 2009 agreement and the subsequent Memorandum of Understanding and Memorandum of Action between it and the Federal Government.

This was the outcome of the meeting of the ASUU National Executive Council in Abuja to review the implementation of the Memorandum of Action of December 23, 2020.

The National President, ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said in an interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday, “It is certain, we are not going on strike. ASUU is not going on strike; every other information will be in our press release.”

In the video posted on instagram by @SiggyNG, the schoolgirl was told that her parent came to pick her and just as she was exiting, she saw her dad whom she has been visiting in prison in the company of her mum.

She was very excited but emotional as she ran to him and they embraced passionately while tears dropped from her eyes.

Really, it is a wonderful scene to witness as father and daughter reunite after many long years.

You may have someone you have been longing to meet for some time now, but you are unable to, imagine how you will feel when you eventually meet them. This is the same with this girl.

I studied Statistics bro and I can tell you it's a great course... It will open your scientific mind to learn tech/data stuffs.
Go for it! Don't just wait for them to teach you everything (cos they won't). Make sure to learn things on your own... Data science, for example is one of the highest paying jobs 2021
