EducationUniversity Of Ibadan Has Never Had A Muslim Vice Chancellor - Group Alleges by BornorBang(op): 3:48pm On Oct 03, 2021
Update from

The process of electing a Vice Chancellor for the University of Ibadan (UI) in the past months has proven abortive due to the numerous disagreements and misunderstandings between various groups of interest for this position, Siggy reports.

It was gathered that crisis in the institution started in 2020 when the indigenes of Ibadan land under the aegis of Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) insisted that it was time for the host town to produce a VC, who is an indigene of the town after 73 years of its existence on their land.

Currently, no fewer than 16 Professors from different areas of specialisations in the institution are jostling to emerge as the next vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Siggy gathers.

The new VC, when elected, will assume office for a single tenure of five years.

A group of Islamic Scholars have stressed that in the last 73 years of the institution's existence, no Muslim professor has been elected as the Vice Chancellor. They insist that a Muslim must emerge as the VC this time around.

Women also petitioned that a female professor must be considered for the position as they have never been considered at all since the institution’s establishment.

Due to inability to resolve these crises, Professor Babatunde Ekanola of the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts was appointed by the Senate as the acting VC in November, 2020 for a period of six months.

His tenure was extended in June for another six months.

However, the process commenced afresh after a decision to that effect was reached at a meeting of the university Council presided over by its Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

The 16 contestants will on Monday present their agenda to the university community, via Zoom (virtual platform).

This forum tagged: “The Voice of the Next UI VC, Who is Next?”, offers a platform for staff, students and other members of the university community to meet the aspirants, listen to them and ask them questions.

The event is organised by the UI Community Forum consisting of five unions in the premier institution ― Academic Staff of Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Students Union (SU), Non-Academic Staff Union of University (NASU) and the Non-Academic Technicians (NATS).

The UI Community Forum established in 2000, has maintained a culture of having a town-hall meeting with aspirants to the position of the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

It was learnt that the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Babatunde Ekanola, has joined the race.

Others in the race include: Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science; Professor Aderemi Raji-Oyelade of the Department of English, Faculty of Arts; Professor Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto of the Department of Sociology; Professor Emiola Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa of the College of Medicine; Professor Temitope Alonge of the University College Hospital (UCH)…

Professor George Olusegun Ademowo of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutic, Faculty of Basic Medical Science; Professor Kolawole Clement Olusegun Olaniran, Department of Teacher Education; Professor Ganiyu Adesola Aderounmu, Professor Ebenezer Farombi of Biochemistry, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Faweyinmi of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Rasaq Olatunde Kalilu of the department of Fine and Applied Arts, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Professor Anthony Kolawole, Professor Oladele Layiwola of the Institute of African Studies; Professor Nazeem Oluwafemi Mimiko of the department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Babatunde Salako.

Chief Julius Oshadumo, an ex-provost of the College of Education Technical Kabba, who was abducted at a church service in Kabba, Kogi State has been reported dead ten days later after a failed rescue mission, Siggy reports.

The 78 year old was among those kidnapped from ECWA Church in Okedayo-Kabba together with a 70-year-old worshipper on September 26 during a church service. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of ten million naira for the ex-provost who was said to be asthmatic. However, two million naira was offered for his release.

Oshadumo was said to have died when vigilantes attempted to rescue him and others abducted in a forest around the Ogori area of the state. He was said to have been hit by a bullet during an exchange of fire between vigilantes and the abductors.

The other person abducted was however said to have been rescued, although he was injured. He is presently receiving treatment in a medical facility. Oshadumo’s body, which was recovered by the vigilantes, has been deposited at the Ogori General Hospital.

His wife and the other worshippers who were shot during the Sunday service are still recuperating in an undisclosed hospital in the state.

A sixth-grader at Forest Edge Elementary School in nearby Oregon, Wisconsin named Carolanah Schenk was shot and killed at her apartment complex on Tuesday by her 15-Year old brother, Siggy reports.

According to the Fitchburg Police Department, police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to a report of a person who had been shot at an apartment in the Curry Court neighborhood shortly after 9:30 p.m.

They found the 11-year-old girl victim, who was then transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. An hour later she was pronounced dead.

The Edo State Police Command has paraded three aye cultists who allegedly beat and stripped naked a female TikToker identified simply as Perry, Siggy reports.

The cult boys who brutalized and stripped a lady naked for using their slang in the video-sharing and making app, Tik Tok have been reportedly arrested by security operatives of the Delta Police Command.

Recall that a lady was stripped naked, held down, and beaten while she pleaded for mercy after making a Tik Tok video of herself using one of the dreaded confraternity slang.

The viral video sparked outrage on social media with a lot of Nigerians condemning the cult group for outrightly dehumanizing the young lady over mere slang.

The victim, whose whereabouts are unknown, was taken to an uncompleted building. In a footage that surfaced online, the culprits interrogated, hit, stripped and sexually molested her. Perry explained to her captors that she learned about NBM activities while in a relationship with a guy. Confessing, Smart tried to downplay his role but admitted he was part of the gang.

“We were six: Osahomen, Kparapos, Asoro, John and Odion. They live at Idowina. I don’t know where the girl lives. We took her from Polingo where she works. I don’t know the girl. It was one of my friends who said he knew her. He complained that she made a video singing Aye’s songs. “He played the video and pointed the girl. I said I wasn’t sure…I wasn’t there when they stripped her, it was later I saw her n*ked. Nobody had sex with her”, one of the suspect claimed.

Harrison Gwamnishu, a human rights activist shared a picture of the suspects in the police custody.

Sharing the pictures, he wrote; “Yesterday, I flew into Edo State and for the rest of the week, we will be Mobilizing the Security Agencies to fish out the remaining suspects involved in dehumanizing the TikTok user. Don’t ever fight illegality with illegality.

Kudos to the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security and Edo State Behind Bars Team for their Swift response. To those who warned me to stay clear from this case, dare STOP me on the way and that marks the end of your existence. We all must STOP legalizing illegality and stop justifying abnormalities in this unjust system.”

The 20-year old student said that he tried so many times before he could build an unmanned aircraft that could stand the wind.

has learnt that the drone was made from locally sourced materials. He works from a store he calls his factory.

In a video documentary, the young man could be seen filing the body of one of the aircraft to make it smooth as he coated it with paints.

Rejoice said he started out drone-making using bamboo. The young man added that it took him a long time before he perfected his skill.

I hope to come first, followed by Liquorose then Angel, BBNaija Emmanuel lists his preferred winners
At a time when he kept hitting a stumbling block, the young man took a long break to make more research.

Rejoice revealed that when he made his first flight in 2013, he could not control the drone as the wind swallowed it up.

The 20-year-old man had to rely on the internet, his Physics textbook and his teacher to improve his creative art.

The SS3 student explained how different materials used contribute to the whole making. He started out by using a wired remote which always made him lose the aircraft as it can only fly a short distance.

With the ability to create a wireless remote, he said that he can now control it as far as possible. Out of the 50 aircraft he has built, only seven have survived crashes.

Update from

As is the tradition for Waec, exam supervisors were assigned across all centers to function as ad-hoc staffs for the ongoing exams that began on August 16 and scheduled to end on the 30th of September.

But in a chat with Siggy, some parents and guardians lamented that WAEC officials deployed to oversee the conduct of the exams in some schools in Rivers were imposing mandatory fees on candidates.

It was also alleged that some of the supervisors threatened to sabotage the exams if the payments were not made.

On average, most candidates in Nigeria will sit for nine papers during the 2021 WASSCE, with a couple of practicals to top it for subjects like Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, among others.

As for the likes of English Language and Mathematics, sources who spoke on the issue said payment of about N3,500 was made per student while N1,500 and N2,000 were requested for practical tests and other subjects respectively.

Based on this, if a student sits for a total of nine subjects and at least two practicals, they might have had to set aside about N24,000 for illegal payments so long as the fees were demanded during each of the papers.

If a school in Rivers had 120 WASSCE candidates for 2021, an estimated N2.9 million would have been paid.

A source who pleaded anonymity to alleged that their sibling who sat for the exams at one Rich Model Secondary School in the Oyigbo LGA of Rivers state had to pay over N15,000 in what was termed “exam settlement” to supervisors.

“It’s coming from supervisors sent to schools. They intimidate the students and the schools themselves. When they decline, they threaten that the results from the school might go missing,” the source told Siggy.

“They’ve been doing this since they started this exam. The one that got me angry was when they requested between N3,500 to N4,000 the day they wrote their English paper.

“The supervisor said, ‘if you don’t pay, whatever comes next, you’ll have to accept it.’ I asked my sibling to tell them she had no interest in it but she said they were told it’s a mandatory fee.

“It was when I reached out to the school and her colleagues that I learned there were some students who couldn’t participate in the ongoing exams due to their inability to keep up with the incessant levies.

“I went to the school to speak to the principal but his response was that the supervisors threaten to sabotage their papers in the process of transporting them to the WAEC centres.

“Some dropped, not because they couldn’t pay WAEC fees but due to other kinds of extortion that come alongside.”

Another source who confirmed the trend said many schools in the state fail to confront the supervisors, leaving the WAEC ad-hoc staff to go unchallenged. This, the source added, was to avoid their candidates being victimised.

“Most schools in Eleme, Oyigbo, Obi-Akpor LGA are involved. SSCE candidates are mandated to settle the WAEC supervisor in charge of the paper for the day,” he said, communicating via instant messaging.Advertisement

“The pay varies depending on the paper written on that day and the amount the supervisor has decided to extort from the candidates. N3,500 was paid to the supervisor in charge the day English was written.

“N2,000 was paid to the supervisor in charge on the day Chemistry practical was written. When you decline or decide not to pay, the supervisor would threaten the candidate that they won’t see their results or paper for that day.

“It’s standard practice here; no one has been able to challenge them. Supervisors now act as a sort of mini-gods. Some of the schools equally ask for ‘Assistance Fee’, another extortion before students are allowed to sit exams.

“Some guardians withdrew their wards from participating in WAEC/SSCE exam not because they can’t afford to register and pay for the standard WAEC but because they can’t afford the extortion.”

Suleiman Kum, WAEC’s zonal coordinator in Rivers, said the exam body had been receiving reports of irregularities.

“We only sent them to conduct exams, during which the respective principals should be in their respective schools. You shouldn’t be a principal and someone from outside would come to collect money from your candidates,” he said.

“For what? Candidates paid for the exam and we’re only asking them to administer it. We paid supervisors transport allowance and a fee for the job. I’ve been receiving some reports about irregularities in some schools.

“And we send our officials to investigate. We were told some schools even asked students to pay for the calculators and other accessories we gave out. Those items are free. A parent called, saying they billed students N3000.

“I asked my staff to go there, one Army International School. From the beginning, they should draw our attention to these, not keep quiet till exams are almost over. We’re really not happy that supervisors go about doing such things.”

On his part, Demianus Ojijeogu, WAEC’s national PRO in Nigeria, vowed that the exam body would punish erring ad-hoc staff.

“When a candidate registers for WASSCE; pays the standard fee and this payment is remitted to WAEC, there is no other fee to be charged. These supervisors and the schools are not billing the students on our behalf,” he added.

“A Kobo from these monies don’t get to WAEC. We’re not aware of these. We neither condone it nor ever be a party to such a scheme that exploits children. They are doing this on their own and soiling the name of WAEC.

“Most of them are teachers nominated by their principals and endorsed by the state ministry of education. They are not actually WAEC staff but there’s a good sum WAEC pays daily. I think it’s for them to encourage malpractice.

“We’re compiling the names of supervisors that infringed on the rules. They will be punished and blacklisted.”

As of when this report was filed, neither the schools nor the state ministry of education was available for comments.
