During its Google for Nigeria engagement held on Thursday, July 27th, 2017, Sundar Pitchai, chief executive officer of the global digital giant, had announced the company’s plans to launch an affordable mobile device for the Nigerian market.
Produced by Japanese smartphone brand Freetel, the ICE 2 smartphone will go on sale for N13,000 (about $40).
The announcement has generated heightened expectations among Nigerians, many of whom are excited about the prospects of a moderately-priced smartphone in the market.
Here are six things to expect from the expected launch of the Google-backed N13,000 smartphone:
Round-the-clock security with Google Play Protect The ICE 2 smartphone set for launch in September 2017 will be the first device to be equipped with Google Play Protect: a newly-developed security software which continuously works to keep one’s device, data and apps safe. Google Play Protect actively scans your device and is constantly improving to make sure you have the latest in mobile security. Most importantly, the device is automatically scanned around the clock, so users can rest easy.
Latest Android software and apps The ICE 2 smartphone will run on Android 7.0, one of Google’s most recent Android operating system which boasts a suite of impressive features including the ability to use two or more languages at a time and the ability to switch between apps with a double tap, and run two apps side by side. In addition, the device will come pre-loaded with the latest Google apps. Vice President, Product Management at Google, Cesar Segunutpane lauded the global popularity of the company’s Android Operating System when he disclosed that: “Android is the largest tech ecosystem in the world today. In nine years, it grew from one phone to 2billion smartphones across the world. The ICE 2 device comes with all Google apps and will start shipping in September.”
MTN apps-enabled As disclosed by Google during its much-heralded announcement, the company is also working in partnership with telecoms giant MTN on the ICE 2 smartphone. While speaking at the Google for Nigeria event, Segunutpane highlighted the fact that Google has continued to work with partners and OEMs to develop devices for Africans, especially Nigerians, noting that the ICE 2 is being rolled out in partnership with MTN. For prospective users of the device, the foregoing means access to some of the latest MTN apps and/or special data bundles.
Japanese Quality Designed for the Nigerian market, the ICE 2 smartphone is one of the devices from the stable of Japanese brand, Freetel. Others include the ICE 2 Plus, ICE 3 LTE and Priori 4. Japanese products are associated with good quality – a factor that will go a long way to assuage some of the fears expressed by industry watchers over the low price point of the ICE 2 device while also bucking the trend of the influx of poor quality phones in the market. Furthermore, the device is Google GMS certified. GMS certification is the confirmation that a specific device meets Google’s performance requirements and properly runs the Google apps.
Further rise in smartphone penetration Nigeria with its booming youthful population remains one of Africa’s most attractive smartphone markets. However, smartphone penetration (the percentage of the population owning a smartphone), while admittedly on the rise, has been hampered by the slightly high price points of smartphones. With the entry of the ICE 2, Nigerians will have a relatively affordable and quality smartphone – a factor that will not only boost the country’s smartphone penetration rate but also encourage more people to make the transition from feature phones to smartphones.
Disruptive effect on smartphone market The imminent launch of the affordable ICE 2 smartphone will have a potentially disruptive effect on the Nigerian smartphone market. In addition to offering more Nigerians a good quality and pocket-friendly smartphone, the development will ignite keen competition and spark a ripple effect that will potentially drive down prices in the market. Furthermore, the entry of the ICE 2 smartphone will encourage the influx of more quality-minded but price-sensitive manufacturers into the Nigerian market, all of which will translate to more investments, job opportunities and other benefits for Nigerians.
A wife who can not do 'suffering and smiling' with her husband is that one a wife?
I dedicate my FTC to all our mothers who stayed happily with our dads, despite the beatings and maltreatments they received just for the sake of marriage and still made us see our dads as heroes.
This write-up could be true but lacks depth. Merely stating 'facts' without giving vivid analysis of the empirical proof backing up the 'facts'. Facts in quote because they are unverified claims being repeated in different words all through the article.
nototribalist: We need to supply them with serious weapons against our enemies from SW and Northerners.
In case you don't know these security guys are called agulere. They look simple but extremely dangerous. They're the same agulere group we use in dealing with touts that come to disturb ladipo market in Lagos.

And your name says 'nototribalist'. No be only Agulere. Small threat of eviction from the North and you're wailing up and down. I see who the real cowards are. What a joke.
fastgyal: I'm writing this from my own personal experience. Dear girls, don't just fall 'head over heels' for a guy without knowing the nature of his job or any of his close relatives.
There's this guy who's been inviting me over for quite sometime, we met at an event and exchanged contacts. I did that because he assisted me with something at that event. He calls me for about an hour or two every night. That was early this year.
When I asked about his nature of job, he said he was a contractor, he couldn't tell me which firm he works with. He stays at home 24/7 from Monday through Friday, weekends inclusive.
I finally agreed to go out with him sometime in February. This guy owns a Bentley and a Range Rover. Each time I try to bring up the issue of his job, he waives it off. The way he spent money on me and my friend that day was lavish and suspicious. I wasn't comfortable at all. He paid for my Uber ride to and fro. Spent about 80K at the exquisite restaurant just for food and drinks. We were three;Him, my friend And I. He uses two iPhones, one infinix hot4 and a smaller phone. I felt so much discomfort with him that day. Thank God my spirit never accepted him. that evening, he had a minor issue with his friend. I was listening to their conversation and I found out my guess was right. I had to cut up all ties with him after that day. abeg I can't be spending money whose source I know nothing about.
The second was a guy I loved, I won't lie. I met him at the mall and there was this kind of attraction. We flowed freely, got talking and all that. I won't say everything I witnessed at his place for personal reasons. I asked what he's been doing since he graduated, he said business. What kind of business? He replied; 'online business'
The day I visited him, his friends came over and for more than one hr, they were glued to their laptops, doing 'heaven knows what' and making calls to dupe victims. I also saw about 7 master keys for cars. I had no access to his FB account then. only whatsapp and IG.
When I checked his pictures on FB, I was trembling with all the things I saw. he's in a gang, probably a cult. Always wearing shirts with that devilish logo of a skull printed in it. Wearing all Black and all that.
And girls, please don't open your legs for any guy you've just met until you're very sure he's clean. I really loved this last one but although its hard to let go, I just have to. I'm not saying I'm a virgin, but I just don't open my legs for any one because he throws money at my face whatsoever. I'm being very plain here so girls can learn.

ipreach: On a certain day some years ago, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi was aflight en route Nigeria after ministering at a crusade abroad.
On the plane he sat by a chap who initiated a discussion. In the course of the discussion, this guy made Deeper Life Bible Church, its members, mode of dressing and several other aspects of the church the topic of discussion. He took his time to disparage Kumuyi's church and members while Pastor Kumuyi just smiled away.
At some point in the discussion the guy asked that they exchange acquaintances. He introduced himself and asked Kumuyi to do same. To his utmost surprise, he was not just sitting side by side with the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry but also had spent over an hour castigating him and his church, unknowingly.
After his exclamations, he asked Kumuyi why he never put up any defence or express disapproval of his critical attitude towards his church and members. And Kumuyi just smiled and replied there was no need...and the man was inspired to give his life to Christ.
I pray our pastors who are currently embroiled in recent attacks on their persons and personalities would learn from Papa Kumuyi.
Take note:
You don't fight your battles, God does.
You do not need to be asked to forgive, you forgive.
No man can pull you down, except you allow him.
The church cannot be destroyed by Satan and his army of demons and humans. Never!
It's only in lifting up Christ will all men be drawn to Him not in defending ourselves.
IF THERE'S ANYONE TO DEFEND, IT IS JESUS AND JESUS ALONE.
Smallbaby: So I was arguing with a colleague yesterday about the company that first brought fingerprint Technology to Nigeria. I said it was Infinix, but she said no that it was one other brand like that. Since we tried Google and it not help matters, I decided to bring it on here, which phone company first brought Fingerprint technology in Nigeria first. Thank you.
My friend had one of these premium Nokia series 5 years ago and it had a fingerprint sensor.
PaulKillerman: . ; He says he believes religion is important ; which of course it is to his patrons , who patronises his platform; and as such he is suppose to wish them well as they mark their event. .
I'm Christian; but to be true with us, religion has a way of dimming ones mind and make u very bleak and dismal in reasoning; it doesn't help u delve into that pool of inquisition, to find answers to the unknown; reason why most inventors whose ideas have changed mankind are atheist ; and Africa which is very religion have always lived in mediocrity and have never invented anything to help humanity...
So how come Religion didn't dim the minds of the Galileos and Einsteins of this world. It's a question about the depth of the insight you have in your belief system. It's not about the religion but the way it's been practised.
Akdegreat: With an honest aim of understanding the nature of God and his wonder displayed in nature, I had set out on a quest for 'truth'. As a very inquisitive person, a sound background in scientific methods further fueled my already curious and inquisitive nature beyond normal.
As a kid, I asked several questions; "Since God created everything that exist, what if God never existed, and hence nothing whatsoever exists? I often tried to picture a dark and void space remaining that way for all of eternity!! Whenever I did, I got lost in my wild imaginations" "How did God come to be? Who created him?" "What if God never created life? How would the earth be then? I often repeated same imaginations again but this time with planets, asteroids and other heavenly bodies. Of course I got lost again, severally" "What if I was never born? So I would never have experienced the beauty of life? Scary!" "Why did Lucifer ruin the Paradise? For Christ sakes we all would have been there now. Why didn't God even kill Lucifer at once earlier to prevent it? He knew the future!"
I grew up into a devote Christian with different questions; "With the so many religions on earth could we possibly be worshipping the same God in different ways?" "If the God I worship in the bible is the one true God and creator of the universe, would he destroy non-christians in hell simply because they worshipped him wrongly?" "Would God really condemn a devote Christian to hell after years of righteous living simply because he erred one time and dies without repentance? Would he now allow a person who has done heinous things into paradise simply because he finally accepts the salvation story in the end?". I had many more questions that bothered my mind but I'd stop there.
These questions didn't matter so much as I still upheld the Bible as truth and lived by its doctrines. On a second thought they must have sown the seed of doubt in my mind; a seed that came to germinate later on. A lot of things happened during my undergraduate study that shook my belief but for the sake of brevity, I'd mention a few.. I held the opinion that "compared to clerics, scientists better understood the awesomeness and magnificence of God". Come to think of it this way, with every scientific discovery, scientists reveal God's wonder in nature while clerics keep 'recycling' doctrines written in our ancient Holy Bible. The beautiful works of God in nature were unreconcilable with the barbarisms attributed to him in the bible. When some Bible claims corroborate with scientific findings we're good, but when 'outrageous' claims are found in the Bible, we are convinced that they're metaphorical with deeper meaning. Gradually, it became obvious that science had more credence compared to religion. My religiosity reduced drastically as well as my total trust in the bible as ultimate truth. Not sure anymore, I wondered if there's a creator (God) or not. I mean, 'the Bible must have so poorly described God' I thought.
Aside from bible, I sought knowledge of God from various books on religion, spirituality and nature. I read the Qur'an and it bored me. I came across "Earth's Chronicles, The 12th Planet, and other controversial books by Zecharia Sitchin. They were indeed controversial, and I asked myself 'how did he know all those things?' The works of Thomas Paine is worthy of mention. I agreed with him largely, especially his 'Age of Reason'. I discussed my thoughts with another 'thinker' (I choose not to mention his name) and he introduced me to the 'Sumerian Texts', the 'Epic of Gilgamesh' among other amazing books. Wow! What have I been doing. They shared similarities with the Bible so I couldn't help but wonder and ask more questions. 'Did I believe in a big lie all these while?' ...
Seek God For Yourself Whenever anyone asks me how I can be so certain about who and what God really is, I am reminded of the story of the little boy who was out flying a kite. It was a fine day to go kite-flying, the wind was brisk, and large billowy clouds were blowing across the sky. The kite went up and up until it was entirely hidden by the clouds. “What are you doing?” a man asked the little boy. “I’m flying a kite,” he replied. “Flying a kite, are you?” the man said, “How can you be sure? You can’t see your kite.” “No,” said the little boy, “I can’t see it, but every little while I feel a tug, so I know for sure that it’s there!” Don’t take anyone else’s word for God. Find Him for yourself, and then you too will know by the wonderful, warm tug on your heartstring, that He is there, for sure.
Remember the story of the widow that wanted to prepare her last meal and wait for death along with her son? She met Elijah and the first thing the prophet requested for was that meal. If such a thing happened in our age, Elijah would have been bashed on a thread on Nairaland. If she had refused to give Elijah that meal, she would have missed the blessing that followed. This is not to justify Benny but you need to understand that there are principles that govern the universe. One of them is giving. I don't know what miracle you were looking for but some breakthroughs may never sping forth if you don't learn to sow. Even Paul exclaimed '...is it too much if I reap materially as I sow in you spiritually?' when referring to some greedy Christians.

Also known as 'Buy now pay later', the spread payment plan allows paid employees of selected organisations to get a device and pay in installments over a maximum period of 4 months. First, you provide your employment details (name and address of organisation). You'll be sent a form which you will fill and scan back along with your work ID and postdated chaques. You'll get a breakdown of how much you'll be paying monthly (which will be written on each of the cheques).
Alternatively, if you bank with FCMB, you can shop on Yes Mobile and spread payment for up to 1 year. How does it work? On request, you get an invoice from Yes Mobile which you can take to any FCMB Branch. You'll get a voucher from the bank with which you can make your purchase in any Yes Mobile outlet or online (for those outside Lagos, you'll have to scan the voucher, the invoice and a valid means of ID to info@yesmobile.ng)
Guys... I recently stumbled on an interesting ad on Facebook. Unlike Jiji, Efritin and OLX, these guys actually offer you payment for your phones directly. That means you no longer have to look for a buyer. From the picture, I guess it's a project birthed from the partnership of two companies (Yes Mobile and Xtra)
