Science/Technology / Team UNILAG, UNIBEN Shine At Car-making Contest by brainzdh(m): 12:18pm On Sep 17, 2014
UNILAG recently gained some global acclaim as 20 students from the school designed and built an electric power racing car that successfully passed technical competence tests at an international competition in the Netherlands.
The car was designed to use solar-electric battery shaped like a teardrop to minimize drag, and its body was built with natural material from raffia.

The students came from various departments of the school, including the electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering departments, plus the physics, architecture and creative arts departments.
The competing teams at the Netherlands competition had to complete two tasks. The first task was to design and build ultra-energy-efficient vehicles to see how far they can drive using the least amount of energy.

There were two classes and seven fuel categories: the prototype class focused on maximum efficiency, while the urban concept class encouraged more practical designs.
Prototype vehicles were futuristic and streamlined, and the objective was to reduce friction and maximize efficiency. Urban concept vehicles were more conventional. They were designed and built according to the needs of today’s drivers.

Teams also opted for one of six fuel types: petrol, diesel, electric battery, hydrogen and alternative fuels ethanol and GTL. The competition encouraged teams to use eco-friendly materials in every way possible.
With UNILAG’s success in the competition, the university got a recent invitation for another exhibition in October, holding in South Africa.

UNIBEN, in conjunction with Shell Nigeria, also designed and assembled an urban concept car for the competition. The project was done by Prof. Akii Ibhadode and 13 students from three departments in the Faculty of Engineering.
Although the car the UNIBEN team built had an engine failure and couldn’t finish the race, they performed remarkably by getting their car certified.

While in Netherlands, Team Nigeria spent over three hours touring the Shell Technology Centre in Amsterdam, one of the facilities around the world where the foremost scientists create oil and gas industry innovations.
The students and faculty members were inspired by the persistence and passion for excellence shown by the Shell scientists. Both teams were happy with their performance on the whole and thanked Shell Nigeria for engaging them in such project.

Science/Technology / Football Pitch Unveiled In Brazil Where Lights Are Powered By Players' Footsteps by brainzdh(m): 11:12am On Sep 12, 2014

Brazilian football legend Pelé, on Thursday, helped Shell shine a light on the world's energy future by unveiling a first-of-its-kind player-powered community football pitch in Rio de Janeiro favela.

The project, an invention of a young entrepreneur, has helped solved the electricity challenge experienced by the Morro da Mineira community. The football pitch, a key part of life for favela residents, was refurbished by Shell using 200 high-tech, underground tiles that capture kinetic energy created by the movement of the players. This energy is then stored and combined with the power generated by solar panels next to the pitch to convert into renewable electricity for the new floodlights, giving everyone in the favela, and especially young people, a safe and secure community space at night.

The tiles developed by British startup Pavegen were installed the width and breadth of the field and covered by a layer of AstroTurf.

While the Head of Pavegen, Engineer Laurence Kemball-Cook, took pains not to reveal the exact science behind the tiles, his father and the company's chairman, Richard Kemball-Cook, said they use a system of cogs. When stepped on, the cogs spin like tops and act like generators, he said.

Each tile now costs about 500 US dollars (£310), but the price is falling as the 35-employee company refines its manufacturing process, Mr Kemball-Cook said.

Pavegen has installed similar tiles in train stations in Europe, shopping centres in Australia and Terminal 3 of London's Heathrow Airport, Laurence Kemball-Cook said, but the football field is a first.

Speaking on the innovation, André Araujo, Shell Brazil Country Chair, said: "By 2050, the world will be using 75 per cent more energy than it does now. Meeting that extra demand will require a set of energy sources - and a new generation of scientists and engineers with the passion, ideas and innovation to develop it."

"The pitch proves the potential and power when scientists and entrepreneurs focus their efforts to develop creative and innovative energy solutions. By tapping into the world's passion and interest in football, we aim to capture the attention of youngsters around the world so they think differently about energy and the opportunity of science studies and careers."

The Morro da Mineira project is part of the Shell #makethefuture programme, which aims to inspire young people and entrepreneurs to look at science and engineering as a career choice, and in particular use their minds to develop energy solutions for the future of the planet.

Pelé who joined Shell to officially open the pitch, said the project showed the impact science and sports, when combined, can have on the community.

"Football is Brazil's biggest passion and the sport has gone through so much technological innovation since the last time I played. This new pitch shows the extraordinary things possible when science and sport come together. The Morro da Mineira community will now be able to use this sports facility as a safe gathering place - all thanks to the floodlights powered by the community's football players," Pele said.

Jobs/Vacancies / The Graduate That Advertised His CV At The Railway Station Finally Gets A JOB!! by brainzdh(m): 4:01pm On Sep 09, 2014
Graduate who held up sign advertising himself at Waterloo Station starts work after he's handed dream job by passing commuter

*Alfred Ajani applied for more than 300 jobs after graduating in marketing
*He tried different approach after growing sick of the crowded labour market
*22-year-old handed out CVs to city workers passing through busy station
*The result has seen him flooded with offers by impressed executives
*This week, he started work in a marketing position at a recruitment firm

A graduate who held up a sign advertising his skills to commuters at Waterloo Station has landed his perfect position after his direct approach to job hunting paid off.
Alfred Ajani, 22, feared he was getting nowhere after unsuccessfully applying for more than 300 jobs following his graduation in May.
He got up early to intercept passing city workers at the busy London station last month, holding a sign saying: 'Marketing Graduate - Please ask for a CV'.
His approach was well received by passing executives and one director who saw him has now signed him up.

Determined job-hunter Alfred Ajani (centre) started work for recruitment firm, the Asoria Group, this week after one of the firm's directors walked past him as he handed out CVs in Waterloo Station last month

Alfred stood on the busy station concourse with a sign advertising his skills after failing to find a graduate position despite applying for 300 roles

Alfred, from south London, started in a marketing role at recruitment agency the Asoria Group yesterday and now works just yards from the spot where he once stood looking for a job.
He said: 'The director walked past me when he saw me that morning, but later got in contact through [the website] Linked In.
'The company said they were looking for someone with out of the box ideas and so they were keen to get me in.'

In recognition of the fame his stunt brought him, Alfred's new colleagues made special T-shirts with his photo on them to welcome him on his first day.
He added: 'The job is one I wouldn't have got if I hadn't gone to the station that morning, so I advise anyone out there who is in the same position I was to think of more direct ways to speak to employers.'

After his story was reported by MailOnline, his new colleagues printed T-shirts to welcome him on his first day

Thousands of commuters pass through Waterloo Station every day on their way to jobs in the City of London

Statistics show that almost half of recent graduates are now in 'non-graduate' or 'stepping stone' roles, such as bar-tending, and are struggling to get the positions they had hoped for.

Alfred had always wanted to work in advertising, but after three years studying for his degree in the subject, was losing hope of ever joining the industry.
In a last-ditch attempt to speak to potential employers, he went to Waterloo Station with an armful of CVs and was later inundated with offers.
After months spent struggling to get an interview, he suddenly had a flood of offers and found himself able to choose his career path.
He said: 'I knew this was somewhere I wanted to come and am really looking forward to the opportunity.'

Business / 17,000 Customers Lack Electricity Meters In Benue by brainzdh(m): 2:44pm On Sep 08, 2014

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) has reported that over 17,000 of its customers in Makurdi, the Benue State capital don’t have electricity meters.

Benue State Director of the Jos disco, Mr. Abraham Ochelle disclosed this at the company's maiden consumers’ consultative forum in Makurdi, stating that metering issues were inherited from the defunct PHCN.

The inability of the electricity distribution companies to provide pre-paid meters to electricity consumers has resulted in energy theft and indiscriminate allocation of outrageous estimated bills by some of the
distribution companies.

Ochelle expressed regrets at the lack of pre-paid meters that made it difficult for the company to effectively control and monitor power consumption in homes and businesses in the state. However, he assured that they have procured meters that would be distributed to their customers soon.

"The good news is that the JEDC has taken the initiative of ensuring that all our customers are provided functional meters in order to ensure that the system is properly regulated and monitored and customers only pay for what they consume.

"This is part of the reforms our company has introduced into the system to ensure that our customers are not exploited at any given time," Ochello explained.

However, Makurdi Business Manager of the distribution company, Mr. John Emeruwa. disclosed that the company has initiated moves to install new transformers to augment the 620 in use currently.

Emeruwa pleaded for understanding on the part of consumers, and said that the privatisation of the power sector was yielding positive results with the "steady increase" in power supply in the state.

In his reaction, one of the customers, Mr. Lemon Atero, who lauded the efforts of the officials of the company in ensuring steady power supply in the state, stressed the need for the disco to improve on its billing system in order to check extortion of its customers.
