HealthThe Great Port And The Things Between by brainzdh(op): 8:52pm On Jul 26, 2014
By YETUNDE AREBI
The woman’s sexual organ is perhaps the most important feature of the entire female reproductive organs. It serves as many ports, an entrance port to the rest of the reproductive system. Through it other features such as the uterus, the fallopian tubes, the ovaries are accessed.
It also serves as an exit port because it is through it that life is brought forth when a baby is birthed, bringing fulfillment and pride to the woman, joy to the man and ensuring the continuity of family name and the human race as a whole.

The monthly cycle (menstruation) is also expelled and urine, a toxic waste from the body passes through it even though from another channel. Finally, it also serves as the pleasure port of the female’s sexual desires. All (well, almost all) sexually built up tensions for both the male and the female are relieved at this port. Some say the pleasures available to both sexes are unimaginable and endless, if properly explored.
Depending on the skill, strength, openness and commitment of the partners, a single entry visa to this port, may quickly turn to a request for multiple entry and even emigrant visa depending on how the package is presented.

A visa applicant might just discover what got Mungo Park hooked on Africa, and the rest would become history.
This sexual organ also has eyes and a mind of its own, no matter what you may think of it.
It speaks a language understood only by its owner and perhaps those it allows into its secrets. For when it spots what she desires, it speaks to its owner. The result of the conversation is the issuance or denial of visa documentations into the entry port or pleasure port.
Once a male manages to secure the visa to enter this port, the importance of this organ is undeniable to the woman, the man she permits into her secret place, the society and humanity as a whole.

Which no doubt explains the amount of care and attention given to it by both the owners and the men who use their services. Yes! Men too, do show concern and care for it. This is because of our conviction that should anything go wrong with this great port, a whole lot of things would likely be affected.
Apart from the physical discomfort and pain to the woman, her man also shares in the pain as embargo would have to be placed on it to allow whatever went wrong to subside. It can even disrupt the whole process of conception and birthing if adequate medical attention is not accessed properly and promptly too. Their could be some other grave consequences, causing permanent injury, diseases or even death. If you or your partner has ever had something seriously wrong down there, you’ll have an idea of what I’m talking about.

That is why I almost fell of my seat some weeks back when I first received a message about Vagina cancer and how use of soap to wash it could increase the risk of having it. As always, I took it with a pinch of salt after the initial shock of the picture that came with the message wore off.
The message as usual was directed to women and the men who love them with the advise that you pass it on to other women. I mentally tried to figure in my head, how many women must have already received the message with the gory picture and the number of those that will, should I comply and send to my female contacts. Tufiakwa! I thought, may I not be the harbinger of this evil picture!
But what if other women were also passing this stuff around under the guise of informing their sisters and friends? How true is this information anyway? For those yet to come across the message, I have reproduced one of my versions of it below. It read:

“Hi, Have you heard? Cancer of the vagina is all over. Please avoid washing your vagina with soap, water alone is enough.

There is a particular chemical in soap that is dangerous. It possibly causes cancer of the vagina. Cases of cancer of the vagina are all over most of the general hospitals, so be aware of this important message. If you have feelings for others, kindly pass this message over to people that are important to you. …. ”
I received three, one without any credit, another with the picture of a guy named Foreign Ben and the third with this gory picture with half of the abdomen of the supposed victim open and a Catheter hanging out obviously to drain urine from the bladder. It was this particular post that got me worried. Let me quickly confess that up till then, I’d not heard about this killer called Vagina Cancer. (and to think of how important this place is to women? How ignorant of me!) So I decided to do some investigation of my own.

I first forwarded the message to a friend of mine who happens to be a Professor of Medicine, Surgeon of both adult and children as well as a very senior doctor at the Lagos Teaching Hospital, (LUTH). He did not only debunk the story but also the content of the picture which he stated had nothing to do with the vagina as it was clear that the vagina in the picture was intact. According to him, vagina cancer is one of the rarest cancers and hardly was found among young women but menopausal women aged 60 and above and those who might have had cervical cancer.

The picture being circulated was actually that of a small child suffering from an attack of a flesh eating bacteria known as necrotizing fasciitis and wondered how anyone can be so callous as to misinform people with such.
Then, I tried to google the guy named Foreign Ben and came up with nothing. There was no one named as such linked to Cancer research anywhere in the world. (please you may forward me your findings if you are lucky with yours).

Finally, I wanted to know the substance in soaps generally which causes vagina cancer and I hit another dead end. What you are likely to find on most websites are findings on vagina itching and discharge caused by a range of factors including sexually transmitted infections and diseases.
According to Dr, Gary Sa on one of the sites I checked, “Although vaginal itching is the hallmark of yeast infections and other vaginal infections (including sexually transmitted diseases, STDs), itching in the vagina and vulvar areas has multiple causes. Vaginal itching can also arise due to chemical irritants that may be found in detergents or soaps, douches and vaginal creams, toilet paper, bath products, feminine hygiene products, and vaginal contraceptive products. Women in the menopausal transition may experience vaginal itching due to fluctuations in estrogen levels.

As estrogen levels decline in the perimenopause, the vaginal wall becomes thinner and drier, and itching may result.
Some studies have shown a link between psychological stress and vaginal yeast infections too. This is likely due to the fact that stress is known to have a negative effect on the immune system and could possibly increase the likelihood of getting a yeast infection”. Soap as cause for cancer was not mentioned.
And even if it was, which of our numerous brands of soaps in the market are we supposed to be running away from? To further narrow things down, what exactly are we supposed to be looking out for in these soaps? How many of our products have their composition written on the packages and how many bear manufacturer’s details such as expiry dates and other consumer information? Perhaps, we need to call on NAFDAC to help us out here.

The whole thing reminded me of the great Garri scare of the ’9os when a certain Professor announced that Nigerians stop eating Garri as research had revealed that it causes cancer and blindness!
Or the one about lipsticks which broke in 2003 and was also found to be a hoax. Or the bit about a certain noodles which subsequently turned out to be a market propaganda strategy by some other brands.
It is a fact and indeed common knowledge that women are advised not to douche as it can disrupt the PH of the vagina, leading to infection, not cancer.
But how many of us women adhere to this on a daily bases? Or how many men encourage their women to keep the place only as the good Lord created it? A guy once told me if he must make love with a woman, she must first wash out all traces of mucous in her vagina! (He probably loves it dry!) A neighbour also once disclosed during a conversation with some other women that she washes her vagina with soap and water every morning and has also taught her little daughters to do likewise because that is the way she was trained by her own mother!
This little message has triggered off so many issues racing through my head. Are soaps and fingers and joysticks (penis) the only things we stick into our vagina? Do have a lovely weekend!

CareerHow To Handle Getting Fired by brainzdh(op): 9:33am On Jul 25, 2014
https://i.iplsc.com/to-co-mowi-ministerstwo-pracy-o-13-proc-bezrobociu-na-koniec/00025HFK4I6FJHTQ-C116-F4.jpg

So, you’ve been fired or let go from your company. Now would seem to be the opportune time to scream, air your grievances, tell your colleagues off and destroy furniture all over the office. Unfortunately, this is not the way to handle being fired from the business you’ve worked at for several years.

As noted on previous occasions, it is quite difficult handling the realization that you have been fired from your job and now you’re out of work. Anxiety, stress and depression are usually some of the consequences of losing a job, which can then lead to other disastrous effects that can destroy a family, household and finances.

Instead of letting it get to you so quickly, take a deep breath, take a moment to reflect and proceed professionally. There are a number of methods to utilize once you have been handed the pink slip by your employer. Anger, resentment and uncouth behavior aren’t the answers to your woes.

Every professional should take the news with grace and viewed as an opportunity to start anew and take a different career path. You must always remember the reason why we fall down: to learn to pick ourselves back up.

Here are seven tips on how to handle getting fired:
Understanding

After you have been given the bad news, spend a few extra minutes speaking with your superiors and understand the reason as to why you have been let go. This can help you perform your job better at a different firm. In addition, seeking the why can also lead to a nice a referral from a manager or supervisor at the company.
Severance and referrals

Even when you’re employed, you should understand your rights as an unemployed person. On the day you are fired, inquire with human resources about any severance packages you may be entitled to, unpaid vacation time and other benefits. Also, ask about any references and referrals you can garner from the office.
Bidding adieu

Rather than rushing out of the office in a fit of fury, say goodbye to those you have worked with over the years. Bid adieu, wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors and ask to see if they can be used as a referral for any jobs you’ll apply for soon.
Reflection

Once you get home and you eat your meal, spend around an hour just sitting down and reflecting upon your experience at your old employer. Think about what you have learned, all of the tasks that you accomplished on a day to day basis and how your skills can translate into a different company or perhaps even career field.
Resume and cover letters

During the next day, spend the entire morning revising and updating your resume and cover letter. Each document should not include that you were fired or let go, but rather they should just list the years of being employed, your role in the firm and your biggest successes. Only reveal this information once you are asked by a hiring manager.
Job applications

There is no need to dwell on the past for weeks. You’re unemployed and now is the time to be as active as possible in your career. For the next little while, apply to jobs on career websites or in person. Be confident, respondent, happy and professional – refrain from looking as if you lost your first born child.
Budget

If you made a lucrative salary and your lifestyle matched then take an hour during the weekend and start examining and assessing your budget. Take a look at how much you earned, how much you spend on a monthly basis and determine what you can cut back on and stretch every single penny you have in the bank. Since you’re out of work, your budget should reflect that.

Moving on is the hardest part of being fired from a job that you dedicated a large chunk of your time to. The solution is to not sink into a deep depression, but to persist in maintaining a positive frame of mind and still working hard without having a job. Hope, tenacity and confidence can land you a job even in today’s tough economy.

Achieving success is a goal for many, but knowing how to achieve it is another story, and this is where habits come in handy as they can assist the person in achieving his/her maximal potential in life.

Habits can range from being disgusting, like going to the bathroom and not washing your hands before you leave “ew! ” or they can help you build your next million dollar company. The richest people in the world, including the most successful college dropouts, all share very similar habits that enabled them to reach the top of the success ladder.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 habits of super successful people…
1. Positive Thinking

https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Stay-Positive-Motivational-Typography-Picture-Quote.jpg

I cannot stress enough how important this habit is. Positive thinking is the golden key to success. People around you pick up your mood, and if they see you constantly happy and enjoying life they will want to be around you, which means you attract more opportunities. To develop a positive mental attitude is not easy as it is easier to think about something negative, but when you really change the way you think, your whole life will transform overnight and you can just sit back and see how people invest their time to help you. Some tips to help you with positive thinking are: repeat daily positive words such as “I can”, read books that make you happy, spend less time watching the news.

2. Surround Yourself With Positive People

https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Inspiration-Typography-Picture-Quote-Work-and-Play.jpg

If you are a busy individual that spends a lot of time on achieving a certain goal, then you would already know that you have to sacrifice a lot of time socializing. That is why successful people prefer to have a short and sweet conversation filled with positivity. Spending time with people who are smarter and more positive than you means that you will adapt to their vibrations and emit a similar positive energy as them, which will help you dramatically with success.

3. Read

https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Inspiration-Typography-Worth-It-Picture-Quote.jpeg

Reading is vital if you want to change the way you think as a person and increase your level of awareness. Successful people read at least 30 minutes a day, but they don’t read just any kind of books, they read books that help them with self-development and books that stimulate them mentally. READING MAKES YOU SMARTER!

Here are some books that you should read:

“Think and grow rich” by Napoleon Hill
“The 7 habits of highly effective people” by Stephen R. Covey
“Success through a positive mental attitude” by Napoleon Hill

4. Eat, Workout, Sleep

https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Motivational-Typography-Picture-Quote-About-Change.jpg

Sleeping, working out and eating healthy, all work synergistically with each other to have an optimum body and mind that will help you tackle problems easier in life. Starting from what you eat is probably the most important habit. Eating healthy will reduce the risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and many other health related problems which means you have more time to build your successful life than being sick all the time. Working out daily is what all super successful people do and what they get from it is worth every minute of exercising. Clarity, concentration, cleansing, enjoyment, longer life, and stress relief is just a few of the hundreds of reasons why these people exercise daily. Getting enough Sleep is probably one of the most looked over habit by an average person, although successful people treat and value sleep more than anything as sleep contributes hugely on how they will feel the next day. Sleeping enough helps maintain a healthy brain and emotional well-being of the person. So get your 8 hours of sleep daily!

5. Gratitude

https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Motivation-Goals-Typography-Picture-Quote.jpg

Noticing simple things that bring joy and pleasure to your life and saying thank you for what you have is vital for the shift in awareness that everything has already been given to you. Focusing on what you lack will only bring negativity into your life and you will only see the cup half empty. If you change your mentality that the cup is always half full then you will be filled with happiness which will lead to better relationships, healthier life and less stress. Studies show that if a person practices gratitude then the level of alertness, determination, energy, optimism and enthusiasm increases and the person becomes a success in life.

6. Constant Self-improvement
https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Motivation-Typography-Quote-Get-Out-there.jpg

Successful people always seek to grow and become better. Constant self-improvement is one of the most interesting habits that successful people pick up because they are proud of what they have but never satisfied, which results in them always learning new things and experiencing new situations. Growing and helping others grow around them becomes a passion for those people and they realize there is nothing more important than pursuing a life that is constantly getting better. The truth is that there is never an end to what you can learn and this makes us limitless to the knowledge we can gain in our lifetime.

7. Get out of Your Comfort Zone
https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Motivational-Typography-Picture-Quote-Comfort-Zone.jpg

Doing something different and getting out of your normal routine in life is a hard decision, but it is very important to push out of your boundaries and try new things and this is one habit that successful people follow. If you want to maximize your performance in life then you need to be in a state of relative anxiety and this state is just outside your comfort zone. This move can make you more productive, challenges in your life will be easier to deal with and you will be more creative. One of the biggest reasons that people procrastinate is because they stay in their comfort zone and this acts like a trap that doesn’t allow them to move forward in life.

8. Plan
https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Inspiration-Typography-Picture-Quote-Love-What-you-Do.jpg

Planning is the number one technique that successful people use to understand what they are aiming for and how to achieve a specific goal. If you want to be as efficient as you can then you need to plan, this will act as a map that will manage your time and help you focus on your goal.

9. Don’t be Scared to Fail
https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Motivational-Typography-Picture-Quote-Make-better-mistakes.jpg

Whenever success is the topic, failure is always left behind, but every individual that ever succeeded in life would tell you that it took him 100 times to fail to become a winner. Failure is a powerful tool in life as you learn from your mistakes and improve what you already have. The top athletes to the greatest thinkers in history all failed countless times and this made their mindset fearless. The biggest secret to success is failure, as it is the greatest teacher in life.

10. Finish what You Started
https://addicted2success.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Motivational-Typography-Quote-Aristotle.jpg

A lot of people have the habit of starting a project but never finishing it, which is horrible if you want to be successful in life. When you start a project, think about what you are passionate about and plan how much time you have to spend on it. Finishing what you started sets you apart from a winner and a loser.

Success comes with hard work, unless you start working smarter. By following these habits you will be able to become successful faster as it is part of working smarter. The most successful people in the world follow all of these habits listed above which is testament to how important these habits are to success.

Nairaland General10 Excuses That Are Keeping You From Reaching Your Goals by brainzdh(op): 3:55pm On Jul 15, 2014
https://cdn.womanitely.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Excuses-That-Are-Keeping-You-from-Reaching-Your-Goals.jpg?e118aa

When you often say “no” to new perspectives and opportunities, you give more room for unhappiness. Instead of working on improving yourself, you get stuck, lying to yourself, using a great number of excuses. Your subconsciousness gradually gets used to your fear and disability to do something successfully and independently without excuses. You should know that all negative words and things have the power to come true and keep you from your dreams.

I understand that it’s very difficult to change yourself because it requires a sufficient dose of confidence, clarity, commitment and courage. If you get rid of different excuses you’ll be able to grow both mentally and physically. It’s actually easier than you think, you just need to catch yourself in the act and replace your excuses with positive alternatives. Here are ten excuses that are keeping you from reaching your goals. I hope this article will help you start fighting excuses today.

1. I don’t have enough

Many people tend to complain about lack of time, money and opportunities to be happy. All these points are the basis for perfection for an average person. If you only concentrate on your problems, you will never succeed in anything. Rich and successful people always think positively and don’t fear to start new things and projects, because they are sure that they have more than enough time, knowledge and resources to live and develop.

2. I’m scared

Try to understand that fear is just a non-existent illusion that makes you limited and miserable. Take control of your mind and don’t let your imagination create frightening pictures in your head. If you cannot deal with fear, you should make attempts to leave your comfort zone. Choose things and activities you are afraid of and meet your fears face to face. You’d better tackle them swiftly, because it is impossible to run away from yourself. Just face your troubles no matter how powerful they may seem.

3. It’s very difficult

Life is a challenging thing. You should realize that every kind of success requires work. Wise people usually say, “If you are feeling tough, then you are on the ascent.” Don’t expect easy returns without doing hard work. You should be patient and persistent enough to put in the effort to succeed in something. Moreover, you will reap the rewards over the long-term with pleasure. It will inspire you to make your cherished dreams come true.

4. That’s just who I am

By all means, try not to focus on things you can’t do. If you stop being fixated, you will see new ways and perspectives where you can grow. Everyone has absolutely equal chances and rights to change themselves the way they would like. Unfortunately, many people are not ready to do the work required to change, that’s why they start looking for excuses to acquit their fears and failures. Try to embrace all habits and beliefs that will move you closer to your dreams.

5. I’ll take away from someone else

You may think that your happiness can affect the people you love. I’m sure that your dearest and nearest people will never be jealous about your success. If you become happy, you may inspire and help them make their dreams come true. Share your happiness with your friends and family and comfort them with your joy, because happiness is a gift to everyone.

6. I’m not ready to do something

Time flies very fast that’s why you should try to use all possible opportunities to become happier. Dalai Lama once said, “Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions.” It’s desirable to fight this uncertainty and do things that can make you successful. Uncertainty and fears have much in common because both of them keep you from your dreams. Wise people usually say that we shouldn’t be afraid of death and other terrible things, but fear the unlived life. Unfortunately, many opportunities are lost, because people find themselves not ready to take the responsibility to do something.

7. I’m not like others

Sure, you are not like others! You are unique and individual in this world. Every person is a dreamer that has more than enough to reach all desirable goals. If you often compare yourself to others, you will feel undeserving and inadequate.

Your friends’ success can give you a push to develop and move on in your favorite direction. There’s no doubt that you are capable to follow your dreams. Try to realize that it’s better to be special than just to be a part of the crowd.

8. I’ve never seen it done before

Many people fear to start doing something new since they have never seen it done before. It seems to be a good excuse, but you should find power to be persistent in your struggle for happiness. Rather than looking for reasons, try to be the first person who has done this innovation. It is better to try as much new and interesting things in life as possible than try nothing.

9. What other people will say about me?

I think, this excuse is the most annoying one. Live your life and forget about other people’s opinion. In any case, people will comment your deeds either positively or negatively. It is almost impossible to be approved and loved by everyone, because there are always many supporters and opponents of your actions. You should realize that a truly strong person doesn’t need the approval of others. Just follow your dreams and let this excuse go.
10. I’ve already tried to do it

If you have a dream to do something, you should be extremely persistent to face all the difficulties. The more mistakes you make the more experiences you gain and more mature you become. Paolo Coelho once said a wise thing, “When you find your path, you must not be afraid. You need to have a sufficient courage to make mistakes. Disappointment, defeat and despair are the tools God uses to show us the way.” Focus and analyze your mistakes and you will know what to do differently next time.

https://cdn.womanitely.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Exercises-That-Will-Transform-Your-Body.jpg?e118aa

Looking for some effective ways to transform your body? There are a few great exercises that will help you to reach your fitness goal. These exercises are easy but effective in strengthening your body along with burning unwanted calories. However, sticking to these exercises is not enough to transform your body, you should also eat healthy and get enough sleep regularly. Don’t waste your precious time doing other workouts, here are seven exercises that will help you transform your body in no time.

1. Jumping rope

https://cdn.womanitely.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Jumping-rope.jpg?e118aa

When was the last time you jumped rope? Perhaps in your childhood. Jumping rope is a cheap and easily portable exercise that you can do almost anywhere. This workout burns more calories per minute than any other workout. Get jumping for a perfect exercise and plenty of fun. One of the best things about jumping rope is that you can do it with your kids. Moreover, jumping rope is a fantastic way to fit in a highly effective cardio session when you are on the go. Simply toss your jumping rope in your carry-on and you don’t need to look for the nearest gym. So, who said jumping rope is only for kids?

2. Squats

https://cdn.womanitely.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Squats.jpg?e118aa

The squat is a compound, full-body exercise that works more than one muscle group. This powerful exercise helps tone your glutes, strengthen your body and burn a lot of calories. To boost your calorie expenditure and raise your heart rate, you can try to do jump squats. Or stay in a squat hold with dumbbells in the hands to increase the resistance as well as feel the burn. Doing squats regularly is one of the best ways to transform your body as well as improve your physical health. If you sit all day at work or at home, you are at higher risk of serious disease. Why not do several squats whilst waiting for your dinner to cook, the kettle to boil, or your PC to boot up? Sometimes multitasking is a great thing!

3. Pushups

https://cdn.womanitely.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Pushups.jpg?e118aa

Unfortunately, many people avoid doing pushups since this exercise is a bit harder to perform, but it can do wonders for your body. There are plenty of different pushups that work the different muscles in the shoulders and arms. Try to vary your pushup style to lower your risk of becoming bored with exercise. Not only do pushups work the upper body, but also work the core. Do pushups a few days a week to help sculpt the arms and overall transform the body. Plus, pushups are good for your heart and cardiovascular health and this exercise helps to improve your posture. Just make sure you do them correctly – learn to do pushups with your back straight to reduce back pain and avoid straining your back.

4. Lunges

Jobs/Vacancies5 Questions Every Candidate Should Ask In A Job Interview by brainzdh(op): 5:01pm On Jul 11, 2014
By Dominique Rodgers
Monster Contributing Writer

For many job seekers, the “Do you have any questions for me?” portion of an interview signals the end is near. It’s tempting to just say “no” and get out of the hot seat as quickly as possible, but fight that urge.

Asking questions shows the interviewer you were listening while they were talking, conveys your interest in the company and helps you decide if it’s where you want to work. After all, interviews are a two-way street -- the hiring team decides whether you’re what they want in an employee, and you decide if the company culture and specific role are where you want to devote your time and energy for the foreseeable future.

Here are five essential questions you should ask in a job interview.

1. “How do you define success for this job?”

This question helps you get a clear understanding of what the job entails and the expectations the company will have for you in it, says John Crossman, president of real estate management firm Crossman & Company.

For example, if you’re applying for a sales position, an answer to this question might be that you acquire 10 new clients in the next 90 days. It may also be that you upsell current customers by 25 percent over 90 days. As a candidate, you’ll want to know whether you’ll be cold-calling prospects or focusing on existing customers before you make your decision.

2. Something specific about the organization

It’s always a great idea to ask a question that shows you did your research before the interview says Chris Delaney, author of “The 73 Rules of Influencing the Interview.” He recommends building rapport and showcasing your research skills with a technique he calls “share expertise, ask question.”

His example: “I recently read that the organization is looking to break into Europe. What do you foresee as the main barrier with this project?”

3. “Can I have a quick tour?”

See also: “Can I meet some people I’d be working with?”

Both questions will get you out of the interview room and allow you to get a better look at the office. This will give you a chance to gauge co-worker interaction, workspace design (lighting, noise level, cleanliness) and the department as a whole, says Michelle Comer, practice area leader and vice president at the Messina Group, a staffing consulting firm.

Requesting a tour or a quick introduction to potential co-workers also “signals to the interviewer that a candidate is taking a vested interest in the position,” she says.

4. “What is your favorite part about working here?”

“Companies, like job candidates, are putting their best foot forward during the interview process, often highlighting all of their corporate perks. By asking every person you interview with what they like best about working at the company you’ll get a better sense of the perks that people regularly experience versus the perks that live only on paper,” explains Sherry Dixon, a senior vice president at Adecco Staffing US.

“If the interviewer responds that they love how they can make their yoga class each night and log back onto work from home if needed, then you know the company takes work-life balance seriously,” she explains.

5. “Do you see any reason I might not be a good fit for this position?”

It may seem counterintuitive to inquire about your potential flaws during an interview, but it’s actually a great thing to bring up at the end of the interview says Morgan Nichols, managing partner at Chicago-based recruiting and staffing firm Torrey & Gray. “This gives you an opportunity to know that the interviewer is thinking about you and gives you a last chance to clarify any misconceptions they may have or elaborate further on something important.”

SportsBrazil Has Faked The Most Injuries At The 2014 World Cup by brainzdh(op): 12:32pm On Jul 08, 2014
Taking a dive or faking an injury isn’t something unique to soccer. There are phantom high sticks and elbows in hockey and basketball, NFL players who fake cramps and just this week Matt Carpenter got away with pretending he was hit by a pitch. But soccer is the sport most notorious for players writhing in pain, and this year’s World Cup has done little to erase that reputation. According to one report, no team at the tournament has faked more such injuries than the home nation, Brazil.

The Wall Street Journal followed the tournament’s first 32 games and recorded, and timed, every instance of a player appearing to be injured before subsequently returning to the game (the study omitted the nine players who left the game after being injured). The count may include some players who were legitimately hurt but still capable of returning to action, but with 293 instances to work with that grey area is likely quite small. Not to mention that the WSJ report found “injuries” suffered by winning teams – in other words, those with the incentive to drain the clock – resulted in four times as much wasted time.

Through their first two games, Brazilian players have gone down 17 times before returning to play. That Brazil leads the list shouldn’t be much of a surprise for anyone watching the World Cup. The team’s players could hardly keep their feet in the tournament’s opening game against Croatia, a match in which Brazil took a late lead thanks to a controversial dive by Fred. The subsequent penalty kick was put in by phenom striker Neymar, who has long drawn plenty of ire for his acting abilities.

While Brazil has flopped the most, its players are quite resilient, spending just 3:18 rolling and writhing, which ranks right around the middle of the pack. Honduras, at a lengthy 7:40, has spent the most time appearing injured. Close behind Honduras is France, which spent 7:19 on the ground – and with five fewer instances. Players from Bosnia and Herzegovina have been the strongest on their feet, appearing to be injured only twice for a total 24 seconds through their first two games.

North American teams have been exceeding expectations at the World Cup, but the four CONCACAF teams have also appeared injury prone, all sitting among the tournament’s seven floppiest teams. Mexico and Costa Rica are ahead of the United States in terms of the number of “injuries” suffered – 15 and 13, respectively, to 12 – but they have spent much less time acting. In fact, the Yanks’ total injury time of 6:24 ranks fifth-most among World Cup teams.

Jobs/VacanciesJob-hunter's Bill Of Rights by brainzdh(op): 10:27pm On Jul 07, 2014
This is a guest post by Lydia O’Connor, a recent graduate who is now job hunting.

After completing my Master’s in public health several months ago, I eagerly embarked on a job hunt, well aware of the tough economic climate. Having digested the standard advice on interview etiquette, including don’t ask about the salary, don’t wear a tight skirt, and don’t wear your hair too curly, I was prepared to impress potential employers not only with my credentials but also with my interviewing skills and tactics. But I wasn’t prepared for the lack of courtesy I sometimes experienced during the process.
It’s not just rejection that makes job hunting so brutal. In today’s buyer’s market, hiring managers don’t show enough respect for the people on the other side of the desk. If there was such a thing as a job-hunter’s Bill of Rights, this is the mandate it would deliver to hiring managers.

1. Tell us what to expect. Let candidates know whether the interview will be one-on-one or in front of a panel; who they will be meeting with; whether there will be any skills tests; and if it will take longer than 45 minutes. You may want to see how your interviewees think on their feet or handle pressure, but you don’t have to spring surprises on us in the style of a middle-school pop quiz. And believe it or not, we might have other appointments or commitments that day. It would also be helpful to know how many rounds of interviews there will be.

2. Be as prepared as we are. There’s no need to Google our family histories or read every article we’ve published, but reading a candidate’s resume before the interview is common courtesy. I once had a hiring manager ask if we could conduct the interview in Spanish because being fluent was a job requirement. Nowhere on my resume did it say that I was bilingual, and when I pointed this out, the employer apologized for not noticing beforehand. That was the end of the interview.

3. Show respect. Start by dressing appropriately. I once went to an interview where the employer was wearing sweatpants and a North Face vest. You might be trying to give off a casual vibe, but make sure to mention that you dress informally before the other person shows up in a suit and heels. Another tip: stay attentive and focused during an interview. Don’t make your candidates wait for ages in the lobby or take phone calls during interviews.

4. Stick to appropriate topics. In swapping interview stories with my peers, I’ve discovered that a lot of interviewers cross boundaries with their questions and discussion topics, probably often without realizing it. I’ve spoken to people who have been asked about their positions on abortion, illegal immigrants, same-sex marriage, and how women should dress in the workplace. I’ve been asked about my religion, my political affiliation, and whether or not I’m a feminist. If it’s not relevant, don’t discuss it, especially if the topic is sensitive, personal, or controversial.

5. Be forthright about salary. Job seekers are warned never to ask about salary. This would be fine if more employers were open about what the salary was. In my experience, 90% of the time employers fail to bring up the salary during an interview. I sometimes get the feeling that they want to gauge my interest without money in the equation. But money is important, especially if you’ve been interviewing for many months. Even worse is when the salary offered is different from what appeared in the Job advert – a complaint I hear surprisingly often.

6. Follow up. If candidates have taken the time to interview with you, don’t leave them hanging. Within a week or two send an e-mail or, better yet, make a phone call, letting them know where they stand in the process, whether or not they have made it to the next round. Give your candidates realistic timelines as to when they can expect a response, and stick to those timelines.

7. Do unto others. One manager who didn’t hire me conveyed the news in a phone call (something that seems increasingly rare) that showed the kind of courtesy we all want. The employer said I had a great resume, and offered to discuss further opportunities. I really appreciated the effort.

Nairaland GeneralGolf Balls, Peebles & Beer by brainzdh(op): 10:09pm On Jul 07, 2014
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles roll
ed into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.. The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed..

‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—-your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—-and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else—-the small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn.

Take care of the golf balls first—-the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’ The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.
Jobs/VacanciesAre You REALLY Looking For A Job Or Waiting For A Job? by brainzdh(op): 10:00pm On Jul 07, 2014
Are you looking for a job — really looking? Or are you simply waiting for employment to fall into your lap?

If you’re like about 75% of the job seekers I’ve met over the past nine years, you’re probably doing too much waiting and not enough searching.

Stop.

Now.

Instead, here are two ways to be more proactive — and much more effective — in your job search.

1) Stop waiting for job leads to appear. Start making your own.

Here’s a real estate analogy that directly relates to your job search. (Trust me.)

Where would you rather buy a 3-bedroom house, in Japan or the United States?

Considering the price would be about $2 million in Japan vs. about $200,000 in the US, you’d likely opt for an American home. And why is Japanese real estate so pricey? Mainly because only about 15% of Japan is habitable. The remaining 85% of land there is too mountainous to build on. So prices are
driven into the stratosphere by the intense competition for prime real estate.

Well, the traditional employment market is just like Japanese real estate.

Advertised job openings — those listed on the Internet or in newspaper classifieds — are only about 15% of the market. Yet, this is where about 80-90% of job seekers spend most of their time looking … so the competition is fierce. And, like Japanese real estate, you are far less likely to find what you want.

It’s far better to spend most of your time looking for jobs that are not advertised, since you’ll have less competition.

And how can you find unadvertised job leads? The two best ways I know are:

1. Calling employers to ask for an interview
2. Networking more effectively. Since so many people get networking so wrong, I’ll tackle that one next …

2) Stop waiting for people to hand you job leads. Start networking right.

Here’s a recent email from an unhappy job seeker with a common — and completely wrong — negative attitude about networking:

Past experience has shown that most people will only help you when it directly benefits them, such as when there is an incentive hiring plan. For many years, I have tried to keep in touch with numerous people I knew very well. Most refuse to even answer. No returned emails, calls, etc. If people won’t even answer, they certainly will not help you. I would speculate that 98% of the time when I contact past acquaintances, I get the cold shoulder.

Jim, Pennsylvania

Like most job hunters who network unsuccessfully, Jim is asking the wrong questions. And getting the wrong answers. And not getting hired.

Instead of, “Why won’t anyone return my calls or give me job leads?” Jim (and you) should ask, “How could I give people a reason to contact me with job leads?” This simple change in mindset will make all the difference. Try it and see.

Here are more questions to ask yourself if your networking is not panning out.

How can I make networking a two-way street, and do something that benefits the people I want job leads from?
What news/tips/advice/suggestions could I give to people in my network FIRST, which would ethically obligate them to help me in return?
Who else could I be networking with?
How many new people have I met this week who could give me job leads AFTER I help them out in some way?
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: Networking is like skiing. If you give up and say, “It didn’t work for me,” it’s because you weren’t doing it right. Period.

Here’s hoping these two ways to uncover job leads and network better will help you get hired fast. Now, go out and make your own luck!

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Dear Applicant, I Don’t Think You Really Wanted That Job! by brainzdh(m): 9:43pm On Jul 07, 2014
What a bitter pill to swallow, these are common mistakes most job applicants make.
Nairaland GeneralDo You Have Good Communication Skills? by brainzdh(op): 3:47pm On Jul 07, 2014
Communication skills involve speaking, listening, writing and reading effectively. Being a good communicator is a necessary skill to succeed in the workplace. The communication process begins with the “sender” communicating to the “receiver.” The various channels of communication are:

Face to face
Voice to voice
Written word

Those with poor communication skills have a higher probability of struggling in the workplace than those who are skilled communicators. This article will address how to develop good communication skills.
Ten Steps on How to Develop Good Communication Skills
Step 1: Become a Good Listener

Listening is an important factor in maintaining good communication. If you are constantly speaking and not allowing the other person in the verbal or non-verbal conversation to transmit information as well, you are not participating in productive communication. Hearing what another person is saying is not enough. You need to actually retain, understand and process that information during the communication experience.
Step 2: Maintain Good Eye Contact

It is important to maintain good eye contact while communicating with others. If you have shifty eyes—even if you’re not trying to avoid someone—you will be perceived as non-engaged in the communication process. Taking the time to fully engage with another person, by shutting off outside distractions like cell phones etc., will express to the receiver in your conversation, that you value his or her time. In addition, this person will be confident that you hope to have a productive communication experience.
Step 3: Be Personable & Friendly

Maintain open body language. Don’t cross your arms, but rather be free to gesture with your hands. Be yourself and try to interact in a friendly manner. If you are impersonal, that will be perceived in a negative way by the receiver and this person won’t feel comfortable.
Step 4: Be Specific & Not Convoluted

Having a productive conversation involves being specific rather than convoluted. Don’t waste too much time with chit chat. Know what your goals are in the conversation. Try to stay focused and don’t allow yourself to go down the rabbit trail with stream of consciousness conversation. If you get off track, quickly regroup so that the receiver knows you are not actively trying to waste his or her time.
Step 5: Focus on Contributing & Receiving

There is a fine line between contributing to and receiving from a conversation. Find that perfect balance and don’t allow yourself to become a conversation hog. No one likes to speak with someone who continues talking and doesn’t let you get a word in edge-wise. Productive communication happens when the receiver and sender, are both permitted equal speaking time.
Step 6: Be Open-Minded & Not Rigid

Go into the communication process with an open-mind. Those who are rigid and have the, I’m-right-you’re-wrong mindset, never achieve successful communication. Only frustration and annoyance follow their communication processes. Even if you disagree with the person you are speaking with, allow him or her to share a different point of view. That is part of the communication process. No one agrees all the time. That’s part of human nature. We are all individuals and should be free to express our opinions unhindered, but in a polite manner.
Step 7: Let Go of Your Ego & Be Empathetic

Don’t be what I like to call a conversational ego-maniac. I dislike speaking with such people. They are argumentative and usually dominate the conversation. Put your ego behind you and learn to become empathetic. Train yourself to listen to what the other person is actually saying.
Step 8: Read Between the Lines

Step seven directly correlates to this next step. As you are learning to be empathetic to the situations of others, you need to learn how to read between the lines. For example, if someone is telling you that they are fine, but their facial expression and body language is telling you otherwise; take the hint. You need to dig deeper to ascertain the real issue.
Step 9: Talk About Topics You Know About

This step is vital to communication, especially as it pertains to the business world. Talk about topics you know about and don’t make up facts or figures. If you don’t know something, that’s fine. Address the issue and make a point to do your research and reconvene at a future date to finish the conversation.
Step 10: Never Allow Your Conversation to End in Anger

Conversations should never erupt into arguments. This rule is important in your personal communications and is especially true in your business dealings. Arguments are not effective forms of communication and they are never productive. If you follow steps one through nine, then you have a higher probability of keeping your conversations argument free.
Resources to Assist in Developing Good Communication Skills

Now that the steps have been outlined, let’s go back to the original question in the title of this article. Do you have good communication skills? If you’d like to find out how you rate as a communicator, take this free online communication quiz from MindTools.com. Respond to the 15 statements and then find out how you rate.

Good communication skills are vital to the workplace and are a learned skill. Remember to follow the simple steps outlined in this article. Be a good listener and maintain eye contact. Always remain friendly and empathetic. Find a balance in contributing to and receiving from the conversation and Don’t allow your communication to escalate into an argument.
