Sudan crash: Minister Ghazi al-Sadiq Abdel Rahim dies The Sudanese government's religion minister has been killed in a plane crash, Sudanese television says. The civilian aircraft, carrying some 30 people including a delegation of military and political representatives, came down in the Nuba Mountains. All are believed to have perished in the crash. The plane was on its way to South Kordofan for an Eid al-Fitr celebration, to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Sudan's Minister of Guidance and Religious Endowments, Ghazi al-Sadiq Abdel Rahim, was among those killed. The dead also include Justice Party Chairman Makki Ali Balayil, a South Kordofan state spokesman said. The aircraft came down in the Talodi area of South Kordofan, en route from the capital Khartoum. The television statement said weather prevented the plane from landing first time round. On its second attempt, the plane hit a mountain. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-19310609 |

The then Bendel State where I had my secondary school education in the seventies as an indigene, was the best in almost all the National Sports competitions held in the country at that time. When the Joint Matriculation Examination into the nation’s universities was introduced in the seventies by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), my state had the largest percentage of the candidates that applied all over the country. Many of those who made the highest mark in the examinations were indigenes of the state. We also came first in most of the national schools debates. In terms of industrialization, we had breweries, cement factories, textile mills and mechanized agricultural projects. In the area of infrastructure, many towns and villages in the state had electricity and pipe-borne water;and because of the pride I had in my state, I refused to lay claim to another state of origin where I would have had free education and easy access to wealth and power despite persuasions from my elder siblings. I was eventually punished for this but I doggedly remained a Bendelite. The question that arises from here is: How did these achievements come about? The answer lies in the good governance of the military administration of one man – Chief Samuel Ogbemudia, who was first the Administrator and later Military Governor of Midwestern(later Bendel) state from September 1967-July 1975. It laid the foundation for the development of the State. Unfortunately, subsequent military administrations destroyed the foundation the Ogbemudia-led administration laid through neglect and abandonment. The civilian government of Professor Ambrose Alli tried to rescue the situation. It did very well especially in the area of education but it could not achieve much in other areas during its life span of four years between 1979 and 1983. When Ogbemudia came back as civilian governor in 1983, he spent only three months in government house before the military struck again. General Muhammadu Buhari became the Head of State. The worst era of the state was under the civilian government of Chief Lucky Igbinedion who was governor from 1999 to 2007. Instead of uplifting the state, the governor was mainly interested in looting the state’s treasury. Subsequently, Edo became a home of prostitutes and armed robbers. Most Nigerian prostitutes in Europe especially Italy are said to have come from Edo State. Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, who came after Igbinedion tried to do some restoration within the short period (May 2007 – November 2008) he was in Government House but he was being weighed down by the pressure from a political clique who did not mean well for the state. He eventually lost in court to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The Comrade Governor came at a time of great expectations. Even though, he had done very well as a labour leader having been a two-time President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), not many gave him a chance to perform well as a politician. But he proved most of his critics wrong. He built roads, schools and constructed boreholes. He created employment for many of the citizens of Edo State. Above all, he gave Edo people freedom from political denomination and intimidation by a clique. Before now, anybody who tried to challenge the political hegemony of the State under the leadership of this clique was doing so at his or her own peril. A man with a small frame but a large heart came from nowhere and uprooted the tradition. It looked like ‘abomination’ but in fact, it was freedom for most Edolites who felt that a time had come when elders should allow their children to grow up and attain maturity. Doing otherwise would have made the children to be stupid. The city of Benin was said to be ancient to the extent that it could not be modernized. But that line of thought has been banished. Many structural renovations are taking place in Benin. It is gradually dropping the name of ancient city. Edo Central was said to be an area where boreholes could not be sunk. Today, there are many boreholes in the area. In Edo North, rivers and hills were said to have made the construction of roads impossible. This theory has been defied. Many villages in the area have now been linked with roads. I am one of those who ran away from Edo State for many years because there was nothing to look forward to. Now, I visit Edo regularly and I am again beginning to see the sun shining brightly in Edo because of what Oshiomhole is doing in the State. I am happy to say I went home to vote in all elections. As the comrade governor settles down for his second term, my candid advice to him is to see his landslide victory in the last election as a call to rededicate himself to work harder than he ever did in his first term. He should not relent. He should complete the projects he started and possibly embark on new ones. Barrister Mack Ogbamosawrote from Lagos |
Pastor Emmanuel Alex in charge of a new generation church in Egan, on the outskirts of Lagos, has been arrested by the police for allegedly impregnating his 15-year old daughter two times. His daughter delivered the two babies within two years. This happened after the girl’s mother died. They were all living in the same apartment at 33, Pastor Olusola Street, Agric, Egan, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. P.M.NEWS gathered from the residents that the pastor’s nine children were not allowed to go to school or socialise with their neighbours and when he wanted to go out, he locked them inside his two-bedroom flat. His arrest followed a sting operation by two non governmental organizations in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA, Alausa, Ikeja. P.M.NEWS gathered that the pastor’s wife died during labour in 2010 after giving birth to nine children. While in labour to deliver the 10th child, the pastor had no money to take her to hospital and he asked her to deliver in their house and in the process, she died. Sources told P.M.NEWS that she died, Alex started sleeping with his first daughter and it resulted in pregnancy. She delivered the baby in 2011. While nursing the baby, the pastor impregnated her again and she delivered the second baby recently. The scandal was exposed during a burial Alex was to be the officiating pastor. Some of the residents opposed him and told those at the burial that he had impregnated his own daughter two times. He was subsequently arrested by the police at Igando division. When P.M.NEWS visited the station, police sources confirmed the incident and told our reporter that he has been charged to Ikeja High court where he was remanded in prison custody. Meanwhile, the Welfare Department of WAPA has taken custody of all his children. His flat was locked when P.M.NEWS visited his residence. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2012/08/14/pastor-impregnates-daughter-twice-after-wifes-death/ |

CBS/AP) HOKENDAUQUA, Pa. - Na Cola Darcel Franklin spent her weekend in jail when she was supposed to be celebrating her first days as a newlywed. She is accused of killing her fiancé at their eastern Pennsylvania apartment hours before they were to get married. Franklin, 31, was charged with criminal homicide Saturday morning in the stabbing death of 36-year-old Billy Brewster in their Whitehall Township apartment. She seemed unable to grasp her fiancé's death during her arraignment by video from jail Saturday, when she reportedly pleaded to the judge, "You got to check again!" District Judge Donna Butler told her that Brewster had been pronounced dead earlier, to which Franklin wailed and covered her face in her hands. When asked if she understood the homicide charge against her, Franklin wept and choked out the words one at a time. "I ... did ... not ... kill ... him ... on ... purpose," she said, according to the Morning Call newspaper. Franklin and Brewster were to be married at 10 a.m. Saturday, and police said they were called to the apartment shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday. They said they found Brewster bleeding from the torso as he lay on the landing outside his apartment. Brewster was pronounced dead a little over an hour later at a hospital, District Attorney Jim Martin said. The Lehigh County coroner's office said a preliminary investigation revealed two stab wounds that resulted in a punctured heart. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57491849-504083/pa-woman-na-cola-darcel-franklin-accused-of-stabbing-fiance-to-death-hours-before-their-wedding/

The wreckage of two Ugandan helicopters that went missing on Sunday has been found in a remote area of Kenya, Kenyan officials have said. Two bodies have been recovered and five other people on the aircraft have been rescued, the officials added. Both attack helicopters were part of a contingent being sent to reinforce the African Union (AU) force in Somalia. A third helicopter on the same mission made an emergency landing in Mount Kenya on Sunday. Its passengers have been rescued, Kenyan army spokesman Col Cyrus Oguna said. Only one of the four Russian-made helicopters en route to Somalia made a scheduled refuelling stop on Sunday in the Kenyan town of Garissa. 'Completely destroyed' The wreckage of the two missing helicopters was spotted on Mount Kenya - Africa's second-highest peak at 5,199 metres (17,057 feet) - by wildlife officers. The deputy warden of Mount Kenya National Park, Simon Gitau, said rescue workers saw two bodies and helped rescue five other people from one of the two downed helicopters, the AP news agency reports. One helicopter has been completely destroyed and the other partially, Col Oguna told the BBC. The combat helicopters came down as they were flying from Uganda to Somalia to take part in an AU-led offensive to capture the port city of Kismayo from the militant Islamist group al-Shabab, correspondents say. Ugandan troops form the bulk of the nearly 17,000-strong AU force in Somalia, where they are supporting the UN-backed government. Although it has lost ground in the past year, al-Shabab, which has joined al-Qaeda, still controls many southern and central areas. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-19253263

The biggest Burmese python ever recorded in Florida has been caught in the Everglades, US scientists say. The snake measuring 17ft 7in (5.18m) and weighing 164lb (74kg) was found in Everglades National Park, the University of Florida announced. The python - now dead - was pregnant with 87 eggs, also believed to be a record. Non-native Burmese pythons have been blamed for a staggering decline of mammals in Florida's Everglades. Scientists say the latest discovery shows just how pervasive the snakes - native to South East Asia - have become in South Florida. "It means these snakes are surviving a long time in the wild," said Kenneth Krysko, at the Florida Museum of Natural History "There's nothing stopping them, and the native wildlife are in trouble." He said that the snake had feathers in its stomach that would help to identify the types of wildlife it was eating. "A 17-and-a-half-foot snake could eat anything it wants," he added. Pythons kill their prey by coiling around it and suffocating it. They have been known to swallow animals as large as deer and alligators. After scientific investigation, the snake will be exhibited at the museum on the University of Florida campus for five years before being returned to the Everglades National Park. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19252080

ABUJA — Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has assured on the completion of the N22.4 billion Abuja Light Rail project by 2015. It added that N22.4 billion for the project, to ease the problem of transportation faced by residents, had been paid. FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, weekend, at the 2012 Senior Staff Retreat for FCT Transportation Secretariat, with the theme Transportation in the FCT: Prospects, Challenges and Solutions, noted that the light rail, which was initially slated for completed by 2013 would be completed by the 2015 baring all odds. He said: “In order to fulfill the vision for building a capital city that will be among the top 20 capital cities in the world by year 2020, and if this goal is to be achieved, there is need to build a transportation system that is in conformity with global best practices. “In order to arrest the declining transport fortunes of the city, this administration took up the task of building an efficient, affordable and modern transport system under our greater Abuja transportation policy to ensure effective and seamless movement of personnel, goods and service in the FCT. “The project is being done to fast-track development of on-going infra-structural projects and ensure their realisation within stipulated time.” He added that government alone cannot deliver on these promises without effective private sector participation. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/abuja-light-rail-ready-in-2015/ |
Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has called on the Presidency and the National Assembly to urgently investigate claims by the State Security Service, SSS, that it has arrested the suspected killers of Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, a senior aide to Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole. In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said it was compelled to make the call following the riddle posed by two pictures carried by a national newspaper (not Vanguard) yesterday, which seem to show that the security agency may be recycling the same suspected criminals for different offences. It said the three suspects in the first picture, who were paraded by the SSS on March 14th for allegedly kidnapping and murdering Briton Christopher MacManus and Italian Franco Lamolinara, in Sokoto, appear to be the same as three of the suspects in the second picture, who were recently paraded by the same SSS for allegedly killing Oyerinde. ‘’Three of the suspects paraded by the SSS for killing Oyerinde appear to wear a complete replica of the same shirts worn by the suspects paraded for killing the foreigners in March. The pictures published by the newspaper is so compelling that we are forced to ask a number of questions from the SSS. Is the agency recycling suspected criminals and deceiving the people that it is indeed solving criminal cases? Does this systemic gimmick go higher than the security agency? For how long has this game been going on? What exactly does the government know about this? And is the PDP privy to this recycling? If not, why was the party so quick to ask the ACN to apologise over the murder of Oyerinde?’’ ACN queried. The party said the only way the riddle can be resolved is for the government to appoint a panel of respected judicial officers to investigate the SSS, while the National Assembly must conduct a public hearing at which the suspects paraded for killing the foreigners will be placed side by side with those paraded for killing Oyerinde. ‘’The reason why it is important to get to the root of the whole case is because the role of the SSS is so critical in ensuring peace and security in the country”. For example, the Federal Government has relied largely on the agency to curtail the activities of the Boko Haram. If the agency has been cooking up stories and briefings to government and recycling criminals, how can it satisfactorily play its role? How can it help in resolving the many high profile murders that have been recorded in the country? ‘’Is it that once any case cannot be resolved or points to government’s suspected involvement, the SSS rounds up some scallywags and parades them to the media, only for the case to go cold? What has become of the suspects paraded in March for allegedly killing the foreigners?’’ ACN said the sooner the government and the legislature get to the bottom of the allegation now facing the SSS, the better for the agency in particular and the country in general, because the moment the people lose confidence in the SSS, the agency can no longer play its complementary role to the other security agencies in ensuring peace and security in the country. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/oyerinde-acn-asks-fg-n-assembly-to-probe-sss/ |

Manchester United has applied to list on the US stock market in a share sale aimed at raising $100m (£64m). In documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Premier League giant said it was listing on the New York Stock Exchange. The club had earlier explored the possibility of a $1bn flotation on the Singapore stock market. United, among the best-supported clubs in the world, said it would use money from the listing to repay debt. The club has been controlled since 2005 by the Glazer family, the billionaire US sports investors who also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers American football franchise. The Glazers borrowed large sums of money to buy the club and the interest payments on this debt are onerous. In 2010, the owners converted these loans into a bond in order to reduce the interest, but analysts say the share sale demonstrates how the club remains weighed down by its heavy debts, despite its huge global fan base and promotional and marketing efforts. The club currently owes £423m. "We intend to use all of our net proceeds from this offering to reduce our indebtedness," the prospectus filed with the SEC said. The club will issue two categories of share to ensure that the Glazer family remains in control. The $100m figure in the initial public offering (IPO) paperwork is what is known as a "placeholder" figure, and it is envisaged that the club will want to raise significantly more than this sum. In September, United received approval for a share sale in Singapore, but the process was delayed because of volatility in the stock markets. Several high-profile flotations have been pulled in recent months as investor appetite has been dampened by the European debt crisis and worries that Asian economies are slowing. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18699885 |

Police have carried out searches of the home and offices of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy as part of a campaign financing probe. A law firm in which Mr Sarkozy owns shares was also searched, reports say. The investigation is related to allegations that Mr Sarkozy's 2007 presidential election campaign received illegal donations from France's richest woman, Liliane Bettencourt. Mr Sarkozy has previously denied all wrongdoing. He is currently in Canada with his family, his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, told the AFP news agency. In presidential elections in May, Mr Sarkozy lost to Socialist challenger Francois Hollande, and his presidential immunity from prosecution ended on 16 June. Tens of thousands of euros were allegedly funnelled to Mr Sarkozy's campaign by Ms Bettencourt's office. Individual campaign contributions in France are limited to 4,600 euros ($5,800). "These raids... will as expected prove futile," Mr Herzog said in a statement. 'Lies and calumny' An investigating magistrate is looking into claims that staff acting for the L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, gave 150,000 euros in cash to Mr Sarkozy's aides during his 2007 bid to become president. Ms Bettencourt's former accountant, Claire Thibout, alleges Mr Sarkozy's campaign treasurer - Eric Woerth - who later became his budget minister - collected the cash in person. In addition, there are other witnesses who allege that during the 2007 campaign, Mr Sarkozy made several private visits to Ms Bettencourt's home. But Mr Herzog has said that Mr Sarkozy's detailed diary, from the time he was interior minister and accompanied everywhere by police officers, will prove that claims of him attending those meetings were "materially impossible". Eric Woerth is already under criminal investigation. The charges in his case relate to claims he had used his influence as a minister to secure France's highest award, the Legion d'honneur, for Mrs Bettencourt's financial manager. But as yet he is not under criminal investigation for the wider allegation of illegal campaign financing. The former president has condemned the allegations he is facing as "lies and calumny". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-18693321 |
