After the Ini Umoren incident and several others, Nairaland has become inundated with requests to verify the validity of job offers and interviews, I have taken it upon myself to copy and paste this for the benefit of our various jobseekers and their kith and kin. The fraudulent offers typically include the Organisations logo, the name of an actual Organisations executive, and a phone number. - Potential applicants are encouraged to call in pursuit of job opportunities. - Communications and other materials often solicit personal information or money. If you receive unsolicited job or interview offers or are unsure if the offer you received is fraudulent, contact the Organisations through their official social media accounts and phone numbers and please forward the email, phone number, and any other documentation you received. In addition, you may: Contact the EFCC and or ICPC at this links to report the scam: https://www.efccnigeria.org/efcc/report-complaints, https://icpc.gov.ng/petition-guidelines/ WAYS TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL FRAUD The following can indicate fraudulent behaviour: - An employment opportunity or request is sent to you before you apply for a job on the organisations platform of choice. - Organisations do not send unsolicited requests, nor do they engage potential employees unless you have applied for a position directly - Potential employers will never engage with potential employees using WhatsApp, 2go, Viber etc - You are asked to enter information to apply for a job on any other website or form (i.e. via a PDF/Word form) other than that used by the organisation. - The email you receive comes from an address OTHER THAN [name]@[organisation_name][.]com. For example: Emails from similar addresses such as .org .us .cm .cc .ua etc are fraudulent emails. - Please review the full email address. Often scammers spoof emails, or make the visible name appear legitimate, to get recipients to open and respond to a solicitation. - The email you receive comes from a free email provider address such as @gmail, @yahoo, @outlook, @live, etc. - YOU ARE OFFERED A PAYMENT PRIOR TO STARTING WORK. - You are asked to pay a fee upon receipt of an offer letter. Organisations would never ask a potential employee for payment. - You are offered an opportunity to attend any organisation's training session for a fee. Organisations do not offer fee-based training. - YOU ARE TOLD YOU WILL BE PICKED UP BY AN ORGANISATION'S VEHICLE TO ATTEND THE INTERVIEW. - You are asked to fill out a PDF application form, or provide copies of official travel documents such as passports visa and work permits, or scan copies of your education degrees prior to legitimate interviews. - NO ORGANISATION SENDS APPLICATIONS TO APPLICANTS. - DOCUMENTS OR SOLICITATIONS WITH WORDS AND PHRASES THAT SUGGEST URGENCY SUCH AS "COMPLETE AND SEND IMMEDIATELY, NOW, OR RIGHT AWAY", or SUGGEST NEGATIVE ACTIONS, SUCH AS THE LOSS OF OPPORTUNITY WILL OCCUR IF THAT URGENCY IS NOT MET. - The address of the interview is sometimes not recognisable or is made up of parts of different locations - You are asked your health status, drinking and smoking habits. FOR YOUR PROTECTION, PLEASE DO NOT: - Respond to unsolicited business propositions and/or offers of employment from people with whom you are unfamiliar. - Disclose your personal or financial details to anyone you do not know. - Send any money in association with a job application - Engage in further communication with a suspicious sender. |
