A Liberian man who was diagnosed with Ebola in
Texas has died, a hospital spokesman said
Wednesday.
“It is with profound sadness and heartfelt
disappointment that we must inform you of the
death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at
7:51 am,” said the statement from Texas Health
spokesman Wendell Watson.
“Mr. Duncan succumbed to an insidious disease,
Ebola. He fought courageously in this battle.”
Duncan was the first patient diagnosed with
Ebola outside West Africa, where the
hemorrhagic virus has killed more than 3,400
people since the beginning of the year.
He flew from Liberia to Texas to visit family,
arriving in Dallas on September 20. He began
feeling sick four days later, but was not
hospitalized until September 28.
“The past week has been an enormous test of
our health system, but for one family it
has been far more personal. Today they lost a
dear member of their family,” said Texas health
commissioner David Lakey.
“They have our sincere condolences, and we are
keeping them in our thoughts.”
He said that the medical team in Texas has
“provided excellent and compassionate care, but
Ebola is a disease that attacks the body in many
ways.”
Health officials are monitoring dozens of people
who may have come in contact with Duncan,
including about 10 who are considered at high
risk of contracting Ebola.
The virus is spread through close contact with
the bodily fluids of an infected person, or by
touching the corpse of a person who has died of
Ebola, experts say.

The Director of Catholic Social Communication
of Maiduguri Diocese, Rev. Gideon Obasogie has
said that two months after the capture of 11
towns in Borno and Adamawa states by Boko
Haram, residents could not return to their
houses and places of worship, as 185 churches
in the diocese were torched and 190, 545
people displaced.
Obasogie disclose this, Monday, in a signed
press statement tagged “state of captured
towns;” and made available to newsmen in
Maiduguri, the state capital.
According to the statement, the “ransacking and
torching” of churches in the captured towns and
villages, have already displaced many priests, and
are taking refuge in either Yola or Maiduguri
metropolisis for the last one or two months.
He said the capturing of towns along with the
torching of about 185 places of worship is, “sad,
heart arching and potentially dangerous to the
territorial integrity and common good of
Nigeria.”
The statement also reads in part: “It is over 30
days now that our Church communities in Gulak,
Shuwa, Michika, Bazza…… were sacked by the
callous attacks of the Boko Haram terrorists.
While Gwoza and Magadali had been under the
tyrannical and despotic control of the terrorists
and this is almost the sixtieth day.
“Our Priests are displaced, while citizens, who
were supposed to celebrate their independence
as a free Nation, were rather counting their
losses and regrets as they had been reduced to
the status of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
Where is the freedom?
“Life is really terribly difficult. We are waiting
eagerly to go back home, even as it is obvious
that we are going to reconstruct our looted and
burnt houses and ecclesial structures.
We have been sacked for months, sleeping in
uncompleted buildings, camps and school
premises. We have been absorbed into houses of
relations and friends
in sixties and seventies.”
On displaced priests and residents, Obasogie
said: “Meals time is always difficult and
shameful. We have counted weeks rolling into
months, must we also count years? We are
waiting to go back home!
Nigerians are waiting to go back to their
ancestral homes!!! .
Our minds are greatly troubled, do we think
about our status, Or about our family members
yet to be connected with ever since we fled our
homes?”
The statement also queried: “Do we worry about
our aged parents who were not so strong to
run, they always fed us with words of
encouragement and wisdom.
Do we worry about our sick members, women
and infants who had been trapped? Most of
whom we heard had been rape and killed. Or
worry about the health, education and future of
our children? We have got a lot of questions yet
to be answered.”
On re-opening of closed schools, Obasogie said:
“Talking about resumption, our children have not
been fed and well clothed so resumption to
schools is practically out of our calculation. In
our opinion if thousand of Nigerian children can’t
go to school then in the long run “boko is really
haram.” Then their future is at stake,
quite bleak.
The health condition of our people is truly
troubling in
their displaced camps in Maiduguri, Mubi, Yola,
Uba, Gombe, Biu and Damaturu.
“While our people perish inaction, or rather slow
action is what we get. Political activities in
neighboring communities were on-going as
though nothing were a stake.
The seemingly not so much talked about
syndicate would someday be a yoke on all.
Lately, three councils of Bama, in Borno state;
Madagali and Michika in Adamawa state and their
Local Govt. Chairmen were all sacked.
“The Shehus and Emirs (on -throne)- were
overturned, this amounts to what I would rather
refer to as (cultural coup), since unknown
figures have been placed in such capacities.
Thousand displaced, many killed, and others
forcibly conscripted. These are pointers that
Boko Haram terrorism is not just a northern
problem, but a Nigerian problem and in fact a
global issue.
As a church we are really going through a severe
moment of persecution. The ecclesial
circumscription is facing sharp disintegration.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public
Enterprise, Mr Benjamin Dikki, on Thursday in
Abuja said the privatization of federal airports in
the country would commence soon.
Dikki made this known in his presentation on
“Reforms and Privatisation Opportunities in
Nigeria” at the ongoing 9th Abuja International
Trade Fair.
He said that although the Federal Government
had made substantial investment in the aviation
sector, a lot still remained to be done, adding
that it was the reason why the government was
considering privatising the airports.
“We are planning to commence the privatisation
of airports; the airports will be more efficient if
the private sector is running them.
“Very soon, we will engage the Minister of
Aviation and we will start a new process of
privatising or concession of airports just like we
have done with the seaports.
“We are likely to grant concession of maybe 15
to 20 years, according to the business model
agreed on, so that investors can make a
reasonable return on the investment during the
concession period,” he said.
Dikki also disclosed that BPE was working on the
process of privatising some coal blocs and sale
of non-core assets of Nigeria Coal Corporation
(NCC) and Nigeria Mining Corporation.
He said that the National Council on Privatisation
had already approved the sale of residential
houses and lands of NCC, Naraguta and Maiduguri
Bricks, non-core assets of Makeri, and the
Ogwashi-Azagba Coal Bloc.
He said that the bureau was currently working to
hasten the passage of some bills, including the
Railway Bill, Inland Waterways Bill, Federal Road
Authority Bill, Ports and Harbour Reform Bill and
Postal Reform Bill.
He explained that the bills, when passed, would
eliminate monopoly in all key sectors of the
economy, create more jobs and deepen
economic growth.
In his speech, the President, Abuja Chamber of
Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture
(ABUCCIMA), Mr Solomon Nyagba, said that the
association was ready to partner BPE to make
the Abuja Trade Fair Centre better.
“ABUCCIMA wants to make this trade fair ground
the most organised in Africa.
“We want to partner BPE to get investors to
help us in building the largest shopping centre in
Africa and bigger exhibition facilities and a five-
star hotel.
“We want to create conducive place for
investors and consumers to mingle,” he said.
Nyagba urged BPE to resume the process of
privatizing the oil and gas sector to improve the
power supply situation in the country.

Stunned by the entrance of the Ebola Virus
Disease, EVD, into America, the United States’
Center for Disease Control and Prevention has
despatched its personnel to study how Nigeria
contained the killer disease.
The US reported on Tuesday that it has
discovered a case of EVD in Dallas, Texas, but
its health officials said “the crisis is under
control and the public has nothing to fear.”
A statement released by US CDC Director Tom
Frieden said “it’s clear the nation needs a quick
and thorough response to its first Ebola patient”
He said although Nigeria was not completely out
of the woods, “their extensive response to a
single case of Ebola shows that control is
possible with rapid, focused interventions.”
Apart from Nigeria, the US will also visit Senegal
to study its model.
Frieden said “the best practices in Nigeria and
Senegal suggest the U.S. should monitor all
individuals who may have been exposed to Ebola
and establish a dedicated management and
response system.”
Senegal has had no new reported cases of Ebola
since Sept. 18 while Nigeria has not reported
new ones since August 31,
US health officials are expected in Nigeria which
it claimed had the best practices in combating
Ebola Virus disease which entered into Nigeria
through Liberian born American citizen Mr.
Patrick Sawyer whose index case was reported
on July 20, 2014. Nigeria is expected to
officially announce today that the remaining two
potential Ebola patients will exit the 21-day
observation period.
How Nigeria stopped the spread of Ebola
According to US CDC, “Nigeria’s first reported
case of Ebola surfaced July 20, when Patrick
Sawyer landed in Lagos from Liberia and exposed
72 other passengers to the virus. Nigeria’s
Health officials quickly issued notifications and
tracked everybody who may have been in
contact with Sawyer.
“Nigeria also established an Ebola Incident
Management Center to handle the potential
outbreak and developed a staffing plan that
executed a social mobilization strategy that
reached more than 26,000 households of people
living around the contacts of Ebola patients,”
The deadly virus has killed more than 3,000
people in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia in the
largest outbreak ever recorded.
How Senegal contained Ebola
Senegal confirmed its first Ebola case Aug. 29
after a man, travelling from Guinea on Aug. 14,
took ill and showed symptoms of the disease.
This prompted a quick response, including an
experienced and trained staff that was prepared
to contain the Ebola outbreak. The procedure
led to the identification of 67 contacts who were
placed under quarantine, monitored for 21 days
and showed no symptoms of Ebola.
Panic in America
The man who imported Ebola into US was found
to have travelled to Liberia without informing
the authorities and did not disclose the nature of
his ailment to the nurse that attended to him.
Reports from Texas yesterday said that the
Nurse who attended to the man has also taken
ill for Ebola in Texas.
A spokesman for Texas Health Presbyterian said
the patient had walked into a Dallas emergency
room on September 26, without knowing that he
contacted the deadly virus and left after he was
treated. He then returned to the facility on
September 28 where it was determined he likely
had Ebola and was isolated. He tested positive
Tuesday, health officials said.
Following the lapse on the part of the hospital
officials, questions are being asked amid panic
across the country. The CDC has thus advised
that all medical facilities should ask for patients
with symptoms consistent with Ebola for their
travel history.

Microsoft has disclosed the first details of
Windows 10 – its next operating system (OS).
The name is a surprise bearing in mind it
represents a jump from the last version –
Windows 8.
The software will run on a wide range of
devices from smartphones and tablets to PCs
and Xbox games consoles, with applications
sold from a single store.
It also marks the return of the Start Menu,
which had been removed from Windows 8.
In addition to offering a list of the user’s
favourite applications, the menu also brings up
resizable tiles – similar to those featured in
Windows 8’s touch-centric interface – on PCs
and tablets.
These provide a quick view of notifications from
relevant applications, such as details of new
emails, Facebook messages and weather
forecast updates.
The company said the facility was intended to
make the software seem familiar to both users
of Windows 8 and Windows 7.
The behaviour of the OS will depend on the
type of device it is being used on. Unlike its
predecessor, users will not need to switch
between Desktop Mode and the touch-focused
alternative.
However, they can still spread a number of “live
tiles” across the screens of two-in-one laptop-
tablet hybrids to make them easier to use with
both a mouse and finger presses.
Windows 8 had been criticised for being too
different to the previous version, which
deterred some organisations from introducing
it.
It initially lacked a Start button altogether, and
when one was introduced it only switched to
the touch-centric tiled interface or – if a long
mouse press was used – provided access to the
system’s control panel and other functions.
Businesses typically wait about a year after a
new operating system’s release before offering
it to workers to give IT staff a chance to get to
grips with the new technologies involved.
But it has been nearly two years since Windows
8 first went on sale and adoption is still low.
“It’s extremely important for Microsoft to get
Windows 10 right,” said David Johnson, who
covers Microsoft for the consultancy Forrester.
“Windows 8 is only being offered to employees
by about one in five organisations right now.
Windows 7 is still the de facto standard for
enterprise in the desktop environment.
“For Microsoft to continue to be able to get
the best and latest technology in the hands of
the enterprise workforce all over the world, it
has to have a vehicle to do that – and Windows
9 is its best shot.”

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday
delivered judgment in the case of 17 men
standing trial over alleged participation in acts
of terrorism and membership of the Islamic
fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram.
Justice Ibrahim Buba delivered the judgment in
camera as journalists, litigants and lawyers in
other matters were told to vacate the
courtroom while the judgment was being
delivered.
The judge, who had earlier announced that the
judgment would be given at 12pm, sought the
views of the lawyers if it was within the law to
give the judgment in the open court before the
public.
The Director of the Public Prosecution, Mrs.
Idowu Alakija, had responded by saying that
since the trial was conducted in camera for
security reasons, judgment should also be given
in the same manner.
But Buba, who said even judges learn everyday,
insisted that he would like to know what the
law stipulated about giving judgment in camera
and how his colleagues in Abuja normally
handled such cases.
While saying he would like to do a short
research on the subject, Buba rose at about
11.30am with a promise to return by 12pm.
At the resumed hearing at 12pm, the judge
again asked the parties to address him on the
legality of giving judgment in camera.
The Attorney General of Lagos State and
Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye (SAN),
said if the trial was conducted in secret, the
judgment should also be delivered in secret as
the judgment was viewed as an inherent part of
the proceeding.
The legal team of the defence aligned with the
same position.
Buba subsequently ordered everyone, except
the parties and the security operatives, to
vacate the courtroom to allow him give his
judgment.
In a bid to cover the proceeding, journalists had
approached the Deputy Chief Registrar and the
Administrative Head of the Court, Mr. Bello
Okandeji, to complain.
Okandeji then led journalists to the court but
the security men at the door to the courtroom
told the DCR that they had specific instructions
not to allow anyone into the courtroom at the
moment.
The 17 alleged terrorists were arraigned before
Buba on 18 counts centring on conspiracy to
commit terrorism, illegal possession of
firearms, and being members of a proscribed
organisation.
The accused persons’ names were given as Ali
Mohammed, Adamu Karumi, Ibrahim Usman,
Bala Haruna, Idris Ali, Mohammed Murtala and
Kadiri Mohammed.
Others were named as Mustapha Daura, Abba
Duguri, Sanni Adamu, Danjuma Yahaya and Musa
Audu and Mati Daura, Farouk Haruna, Abdullahi
Azeez, Ibrahim Bukar and Zula Diani.
Though all the 17 were arraigned and they
pleaded not guilty to the crime, only four were
brought to court on Tuesday before Buba for
judgment.

Barely two weeks after the collapse of the guest
house at Synagogue Church of All Nations in
Lagos, a fresh indication emerged yesterday that
the church was given an approval for a 12-
storey building by the Lagos State government.
Speaking during an interview on Channels
Television, yesterday, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, an aide
to Prophet T.B Joshua, refuted reports that the
building had no approval.
He said: “It is not true and I stand to be
corrected. I want to also point out that
whosoever said that was not saying the correct
thing, because I also listened to a commissioner
of Lagos State, when he came to your studio. He
said that when he got there, he discovered that
there was no approval for the building, meaning
that he has not been there before and there was
nothing of such. Yes, the church had approval.”
Asked if the church had shown the approval to
the Lagos State Government authorities, he said:
“Yes, ofcourse. Officials of Lagos State
Government have been there severally. They
have even come to look at other buildings in the
church premises. So, there is no additional
sturcture to the building. We are talking of a
building that is on its own. We have the
pictures. It’s a new structure.
“The building is still under construction, but it is
not as if it is an attachment to the church
auditorium. It is a building standing on its own
and in a different compound. It is a guest house.
It is a building that has its own design and
approval. This particular structure in question,
has an approval for 12-storey building and they
have even come to examine the foundation and
its casting after this incident. They have
therefore seen that it was done with the
specification of a 12-storey building.”
When contacted, Lagos State Commissioner for
Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr.
Toyin Ayinde, declined comment on the matter
saying, “there will be no further comment on the
collapsed Synagogue building until investigations
into the matter are concluded and the report
made public.”
Lagos is conducting thorough investigation—

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State,
yesterday, declared that the state government is
conducting thorough investigation to unravel the
facts surrounding the collapse of a six-storey
building owned by the Synagogue Church of All
Nations, SCOAN, saying, “we are acting
methodically on the issue.”
This came two weeks after the six-storey guest
house owned by SCOANs killed over 100 persons
and 131 others rescued.
Fashola, who stated this during a courtesy visit
by the executive members of the Nigerian
Institute of Town Planners, NITP, led by its
President, Mr. Steve Onu, at the State House,
Alausa, Ikeja, warned residents to refrain from
making false statements on the collapsed
building.
The governor, while reacting to complaints from
residents, demanding immediate action said:
”People must understand that when accidents
like this happen, there are many issues involved.
Perhaps, we have got used to what was amounts
to an inappropriate conduct on arrival at an
accident scene and make pronouncements on
what happened before the investigations are
concluded.
“Residents must desist from this act and wait
for professionals to make pronouncements. I
think we should just allow that process to go
on. I think the investigation will be held if we
refrain from any further comment about this
incident. So, some of the people we took away
from the accident scenes, who are in coma and
who are in shock, people count them as dead
people.
“This kind of behaviour must stop. Unless there
is anybody keeping dead bodies in his house and
private hospital, we are the regulators and all
those bodies come to our mortuaries. So, we
must account for them.” he warned.
