God’s Remedy For Depression (5) Wed, 10 Nov 2021 ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love.’ Jeremiah 31:3 Let’s take a moment and look at the kind of self-talk that can increase feelings of depression—and keeps us stuck there. For example, instead of simply saying, ‘I made a mistake,’ we say, ‘I’m a total failure.’ Instead of saying, ‘I accidentally tripped,’ we say, ‘I’m clumsy.’ Instead of just saying, ‘I ate too much,’ we say, ‘I’m a pig.’ And when we label ourselves with such titles, we reinforce our problems and may begin to feel worse. Let God change the harmful misconceptions you have of yourself, such as: (1) ‘If somebody criticises me, it means I’m worthless,’ or (2) ‘I have to be loved and accepted by everybody in order to feel fulfilled,’ or (3) ‘I can’t admit an area of weakness; I must be perfect or else I’m a failure.’ Those are the kinds of misconceptions that can increase depression. Jesus knew the importance of correct thinking when He said, ‘You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ (John 8:32 NLT) The good news is—you can live free from depression! How? By establishing a personal relationship with Christ. This may not automatically cure all your depression, but without Him in your life, you don’t have the power to change. When Christ comes into your life, He gives you a new purpose, new power, and a new perspective. You need something greater to live for than your own interests. People who live only for themselves often end up depressed. You need something bigger; something that draws you out of yourself. And that something is a relationship with Jesus Christ. Through Him (and with appropriate support from a medical professional if needed), you can conquer depression. |

God’s Remedy For Depression (4) Tue, 9 Nov 2021 ‘The Lord said to him, ‘Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus.’ 1 Kings 19:15 Let God give you new direction. God told Elijah to go to the Desert of Damascus and anoint a new king and also a new prophet to take his place (1 Kings 19:15–17). In other words, He gave Elijah a new assignment. Try to avoid spending too much time in self-pity. Try to get your eyes off yourself and start looking at the needs of others. Get involved in their lives through a ministry where you’re giving out and God is giving through you. If you are constantly looking at yourself, you will get discouraged. Scripture says, ‘Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.’ (Philippians 2:4 NLT) You say, ‘But I’ve failed badly and disappointed myself. Surely God must be disappointed with me too.’ Disappointment only happens when someone expects you to do something different from what you do. Jesus knew Peter would deny Him, but He called him anyway. Why? Because He knew Peter would learn and grow through the experience and go on to even greater things. God wants to give you a new purpose and a new direction. He is not finished with you. Maybe you blew it. Big deal! If you let Him, God will pick you up and help you to start again. One mistake—or one hundred—doesn’t render you useless for life. Today, God wants to lift you out of your depression. He can help you. He can change you. You don’t have to go through life being manipulated by your emotions. Your emotions can be affected by your thoughts, and with God’s help, you can change how you think and what you think about! |

God’s Remedy For Depression (3) Mon, 8 Nov 2021 ‘Stand out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ 1 Kings 19:11 Pursue a fresh awareness of God’s presence in your life. The third thing God did in dealing with Elijah’s depression was to tell him, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Next, we read: ‘Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he… went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.’ (1 Kings 19:11–13 NIV) That day God put on an impressive show with the wind, the earthquake, and the fire. But He wasn’t speaking to Elijah through any of these big things. What really got Elijah’s attention was the still, small voice—the gentle whisper. God usually speaks to us in stillness and quietness—not through some big dramatic demonstration of fire or power. He basically whispered, ‘Elijah, I’m still right here beside you.’ So if you’re feeling depressed, take your Bible and go to a serene, quiet place. Sit down, read the Scriptures, and get alone with God. Just let Him love you and speak to you. Let Him meet your needs and let yourself feel His presence. There is no more effective antidepressant than communication and fellowship with God. That’s what He means when He says to you, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’ (Psalm 46:10 NIV) |

God’s Remedy For Depression (2) Sun, 7 Nov 2021 ‘The Lord asked, “Elijah, why are you here?”’ 1 Kings 19:9 Tell God your frustrations. After being restored through proper food and rest, Elijah travelled for forty days. Then he went into a cave and spent the night. In the morning, the Lord asked him, ‘Why are you here?’ Elijah answered: ‘I’ve always done my best to obey You. But Your people have broken their solemn promise to You. They have torn down Your altars and killed all Your prophets, except me. And now they are even trying to kill me!’ (1 Kings 19:10 CEV) Elijah poured out all his feelings, and God allowed him to let off steam. He wasn’t shocked by Elijah’s complaints. Sometimes it’s helpful to share your feelings with a trusted friend. It’s cathartic, a cleaning out, a venting of all the things that have been pushed down inside you that are contributing to your feelings of depression. And Elijah had plenty of stuff pushed down inside. Notice the emotions he experienced. He was afraid. Then he felt resentment, followed by low self-esteem and guilt. ‘I’ve had enough… I’m no better off than my ancestors.’ (1 Kings 19:4 CEV) He was angry because he had worked hard for nothing. He was lonely to the point of despair: ‘Now they are even trying to kill me!’ He was worried. When fear, resentment, low self-esteem, guilt, anger, loneliness, and worry are combined, it can open the door to depression! So God let him spill it all out. He basically said, ‘Elijah, what’s frustrating you? What’s eating you up?’ and Elijah poured it all out. So when you are depressed, what you need to do is—take it to God in prayer. |

God’s Remedy For Depression (1) Sat, 6 Nov 2021 ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ 1 Kings 19:7 If you are experiencing depression, it is important to seek the support of a medical professional or counsellor. But God also has some wisdom. Take care of your physical needs. Elijah was exhausted, so he stretched out under a tree and fell asleep. ‘All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.’ (1 Kings 19:5–6 NIV) Then the angel came to him a second time and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ (1 Kings 19:7 NIV) So he ate and drank and was strengthened by the food. You can exhaust yourself in a good cause and pray until you’re blue in the face, but it won’t do any good until you learn to exercise wisdom concerning the physical needs of your body. God’s initial remedy for Elijah’s depression called for a change of diet and proper rest. A good night’s sleep or a holiday can do wonders for your attitude. Be wise; when you’re physically and mentally drained, you’re vulnerable. Notice, God didn’t scold Elijah by saying, ‘You coward! What are you doing here in the desert?’ No, He restored him physically. And that was the starting point. So if you’re depressed, your first step towards recovery may be to get in shape physically. Take care of your health needs. Perhaps you need to change your diet, get more sleep, or begin an exercise programme. Physical health has a profound influence on your moods. Can God heal you in answer to prayer? Yes (see James 5:14). But He expects you to use faith—and wisdom! |

Prepare Through Prayer Fri, 5 Nov 2021 ‘Can’t any of you stay awake with Me for just one hour?’ Matthew 26:40 In Gethsemane, Jesus ‘came back and found His disciples sleeping. So He said to Peter, “Can’t any of you stay awake with Me for just one hour? Stay awake and pray that you won’t be tested. You want to do what is right, but you are weak.”’ (Matthew 26:40–41 CEV) Jesus was just hours from the cross, and He asked His disciples to pray for Him. Imagine His disappointment when He found them sleeping! Perhaps they didn’t get enough rest the night before. Maybe they were worn out from a hard day’s work. We have all been victims of drowsiness, so we shouldn’t be surprised that they fell asleep, but we are! We’re shocked because it was such an important night. This night, more than any other, required the discipline of prayer. But the disciples missed a great opportunity to strengthen Jesus in His hour of need. They missed an opportunity to strengthen themselves as well. Satan knows if he can keep you from prayer, you will be powerless. He is the master of distraction. Think how often he has robbed you of your quiet time with God by using things like TV, the telephone, the internet, a messy house, your to-do list, your wandering mind, your heavy eyelids. Your quiet time with God isn’t something you try to ‘fit into’ your schedule; it must be something you prioritise, or it won’t happen. Jesus said, ‘Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.’ (Matthew 26:41 NIV) You don’t know what each day holds, but through prayer and spending time in God’s Word, you can prepare your heart for whatever life throws at you. |

Say, ‘God is my dwelling place’ Thu, 4 Nov 2021 ‘Lord, You have been our dwelling place.’ Psalm 90:1 Even though the Israelites were God’s people, they ‘wandered in the wilderness in a desolate way; they found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.’ (Psalm 107:4–5 NKJV) If you feel that way today, perhaps your soul needs a ‘dwelling place’. A home where it’s at peace, secure, and nurtured; a place where you can lay down your worries, weariness, and frustrations. David said, ‘My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and… flesh cry out for the living God.’ (Psalm 84:2 NIV) Good news! Jesus wants to be your home! He said, ‘Live in Me, and I will live in you.’ (John 15:4 GWT) You can treat Him as an emergency shelter you run to in times of trouble, or you can live in Him. You say, ‘How do I make Jesus my “dwelling place”?’ Think about it: if someone gave you the gift of a beautiful home, how would you enter it? You would check to make sure the giver was serious, inspect the paperwork, then pack up, move in, and enjoy it, right? Jesus is serious when He invites you to live in Him. So by the act of faith, pack up and move in today. God said, ‘My people will live in peaceful places and in safe homes and in calm places of rest.’ (Isaiah 32:18 NCV) The English poet Hartley Coleridge penned these insightful words about faith: ‘It is an affirmation and an act, that bids eternal truth be present fact.’ The spoken Word of God is powerful! So when you get up every morning, make this your affirmation: ‘Today, God is my dwelling place!’ |

When Things Go Wrong Wed, 3 Nov 2021 ‘To give them beauty for ashes.’ Isaiah 61:3 The world is not going to devote itself to making you happy. Only when you accept that, can you begin to move forward. Life doesn’t always work the way you want it to. Paul wrote, ‘I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain.’ (Romans 15:24 ESV) But it seems unlikely he ever got to Spain; instead he landed in one of the worst prisons in Europe. But from there he wrote the epistles. Your disappointment may turn out to be God’s appointment. The Bible says, ‘We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.’ (Proverbs 16:9 NLT) Aren’t you glad He’s in control of your life? Let the philosophers argue over why life works as it does; just focus on how to live it! If you live to be a hundred, what good is it anyway if resentment and regret keep you from enjoying it? And what good is more time, if you’re only killing the time you’ve got? Remember how an oyster makes a pearl? When a grain of sand gets into its shell and irritates it, instead of resisting and resenting it, the oyster wraps it in layer after layer of beauty, till a pearl is formed. An unknown poet said, ‘Now this tale has a moral for isn’t it grand what an oyster can do with a morsel of sand. What couldn’t we do if we’d only begin, with some of the things that get under our skin.’ God is working in everything you're going through today, for your good and His glory. All you need to do is trust Him. If you do, He’ll give you beauty for ashes. |

His Servant and His Witness Tue, 2 Nov 2021 ‘I have appeared to you to appoint you as My servant and witness.’ Acts 26:16 A ‘servant’ focuses on doing his master’s will. And a ‘witness’ testifies to what he or she has seen and personally experienced. And as a redeemed child of God, you’re called to do both. Let’s look at each one individually. (1) You’re God’s servant. That means your ears must be attuned to what He wants you to do, when He wants you to do it, in the way He wants it done. Doing His will should be the most important item on your daily agenda. (2) You’re His witness. The value of a witness depends on how close they were to an event when it happened, and what they observed. John writes, ‘We saw Him with our own eyes and touched Him with our own hands... Now we testify.’ (1 John 1:1–2 NLT) Remember the old adage ‘you become like the company you keep’? Well, when you spend time with Jesus each day, others will be influenced by your life. The Bible says, ‘A winner of souls is wise.’ (Proverbs 11:30 GWT) When it comes to sharing your faith, you must show wisdom, tact, and grace. Chances are that many people you meet have had at least one bad experience with Christians and church, so you must be ‘wise’. And how do you do that? By letting them know Jesus is the Great Physician who heals broken hearts. That the church is a hospital where some are doing well while others still need care. Properly understood and presented, this will draw people to Jesus instead of driving them away. So… what’s your assignment? To be His servant and His witness! |
