Do you still have the original self pay package document you signed and did you go with it?

no, I don't have the self pay documents because we mostly spoke on phone.

I think it’s going to be difficult for people who went for cheap and cheerful hospitals to get their visas renewed again. Paying all your bills is not the issue here, the issue is the amount you paid. Heavily discounted bill will be hard to explain, $3500.00 down to $6000 is unexplainable, self paid or not.

Those hospitals are probably getting the shortfall from the government which explains why VOs are digging in now on this.
So does it mean that hospitals like oakbend don't give that kind of discount?

yaay, thank you. I have sent you a mail.
I had my baby in New York in 2016 on tourist visa but I informed them at the Port of entry that I was going to have my bat and they allowed me in. Before I traveled I inquired about cost and I was told that hospital bill among other bills for self pay is $6,000 dollars. Altogether I paid almost $15,000 for the delivery ( hospital, doctor's bill, lab, anesthesia and paediatric care). But I was surprised when the hospital gave me my itemized receipt, it showed a bill of $35,000. And since I paid $6,000. The balance of $25,000 was written off as self pay adjusted discount. When I asked they said that's how the template is in their system. Anyway, I gathered all my other receipts from Doctor, lab etc. Fast forward to January 2018
I tried to renew my Visa. This time I applied for medical visa. Because I am pregnant again. And the interview went this way
VO- how long was you longest stay in the US
ME- 3 months
VO- what were you doing there
ME- I had my baby
Vo- how much did you pay
ME- almost$15,000
Vo- may I have the receipts
And I handed the receipts to him
Vo- you were billed $35,000 for hospital and you only paid $6,000. Why did they give you such huge discount
ME- I wouldn't know, I was asked if I was self pay or with insurance and I said self pay and they said their bill for self pay is $6,000 which I paid in full. It's possible the other bills are for those with insurance
Vo- I'm sorry at this time you do not qualify for US Visa and handed me the white paper.
I'm really upset. I have reapplied. Please help me. I want to know if there is anything I need to do before my upcoming interview to enhance my getting the visa.

Seems its best to jst book an interview since u can waive the dropbox right and appear at the counter jst like LI and his wife did.

Pls help me out. I have been traveling to the US. And at some point I was eligible for drop box. So I have been renewing my Visa by drop box. But I had my baby in the US last year on a running Visa. Since I did not inform US immigration when I was renewing my Visa that I was pregnant, I had to tell the immigration officers at entry point that I was going to give birth. And they allowed me to enter when they checked and saw that I had enough money to pay for the delivery. I paid all my bills and have my zero balance. But now I want to renew my visa for the first time after giving birth, I am pregnant again so I applied for medical visa by drop box and I was invited for a follow-up interview. I don't know what to expect at the follow up interview.

Thanks

Goodmorning my dear NLers, Pls if you would remember, a few weeks ago I was asking for the difference between discount and financial assistance cos a hospital in NYC was going to give me financial aid due to the fact that I'm self pay ,And they told me it has nothing to do with Medicaid or insurance . But I've been scared of the aid.
They have made me understand that most govt hospital's do this same financial assistance program. Someone recently proved to me that even the OAKBEND we use is also a govt hospital and grant this same aid to uninsured, self pay patients.

Pls you people should help me look at this closely let me make a decision plsssss

Trannsit or Valid U.K Visa is required if you need to leave the airport but if na just to stop over and catch the next flight to the USA i dont think you need one.

Good day my ever dependable Nlers,
I've been more of a silent observer in this forum, asking one or two questions occasionally. I must say that nairaland gave me the requisite information and confidence I needed.
I had a dropbox for visa renewal (B1,B2) last year which I didn't use, and got pregnant afterwards with the intention of birthing my baby in the US. I started making the hospital and doctor arrangements, finally settled for oakbend Dr F. Who gave me a letter of correspondence with NO prior payment.
I also sent an email to the embassy notifying them of my change of intent, however only a generic mail was sent to me without any formal address to my issue. I sent them about 3reminder mails, no show. I shaa printed the mails I sent, correspondence with Doc, and all other documents including statements of account's of hubby and I.
Fast forward to 17th Oct. I Boarded BA, mind you they didn't even know I was pregnant (and I was over 34weeks!!) so I just dey waka dey go, on getting to Heathrow airport, I was approached by an officer who said my name was nominated for random, extensive search.
Hiaaaa!!!! I asked the lady why me of all people, does it look like I carry contraband? Hmmm, so about 20of us were selected, and I was the only black amongst them. After every every, They brought one gadget and started replace it on people''s tummies ,Hmmmm Na im I say I no go Gree this one oooo, I will not because of going to America harm my unborn child. So I raised alarm and told the woman that I'm preggy oooo.
She quickly went to her computer and typed something.... Only God knows what. (but I felt she informed her American counterparts) now came back with a smaller gadget and said it won't affect baby. After everything, we boarded.
I landed at JFK, I walked majestically to CBP officer, I didn't request any wheel chair cos I felt I was fit and didn't want to attract undue attention or sympathy to myself. I just prayed and told myself that :what ever will be will be. If they send me back, their loss.
Me: Hi..... Smiles
CBP:Hello,how are you
Me: good, hands my passport over.
CBP:how long are you gonna be here for?
Me:8weeks and 4days.
CBP:so precise!! You almost counted the hours too. Smiles
Me:Smiles
CBP:whats the purpose of your visit?
Me :child birth and vacation
CBP:do you have cash on you here?
Me: yeah. Bleep dollars
CBP:do you have a Doctor''s correspondence and have you made some payments?
Me:I have correspondence, but my doctor prefers one to land in US first before payment. Started bringing out my documents...
CBP : Nope, no worries, no need to see the documents.do have a are delivery.
Pls place your fingers for thumb printing.
Whewwww!!! that was a breeze, less than 3mins. Thank you Jesus!!!
Went to agric section, I none of my items was seized!!!!!
Baba God I thank you for bringing Nairaland my way oooooo

If the soft copy of your passport doesn't meet the passport requirements it wont upload. I had them email me a soft copy rather than using a scanned copy and it worked. maybe you should try that

pls something has been bothering me about payment of bills, pls help clarify, is there a difference between discount and financial assistance? Some hospitals will say they are giving "financial assistance " to self pay individuals. I'm really scared it may be a baptized form of Medicaid. Pls help

Hello house.

I'm grateful for the gift of this forum. I have consulted nairaland at almost every point of my adult life since 2007 - from the time I came fresh out of school, then NYSC, job, relationship, visa interview, and now birthing in the US. In the course of this journey, I have made interesting friends from here, and received countless invaluable contributions from guys here.

So here is the full account of the missionary journey of my DW.

She flew Qatar Airways at 34w4d to Atlanta in July. The journey was long. The layover was about 9 hours and Qatar pulled an unfortunately ugly card. We had arranged their complimentary hotel from Lagos (they call it STPC) and on the morning of the flight, we got the printed voucher. She got to Qatar and she was told her the airport hotel was full. They gave her a city hotel but Qatar Immigrations would not allow her in. It was later I learnt that Qatar immigrations won't allow entry to people flying for medical purposes/pregnancy.

Fast forward to Atlanta airport, no fireworks. The CBP asked her what she was there for and she told them to have her baby. Dazol! The man then told her to always carry her receipts. Not one document asked or presented.

Hospital: Emory Midtown (Dr Tates)

I'll skip the details that most of us know but I believe some other info here may help mamas contemplating Atlanta and Emory.

We paid for CS and epidural, about $6,525 and Dr Tate's $1,500. On the first appointment, he recommended a test that cost about $100 or so at another location due to the peculiarity of her pregnancy. Dr Tate said she'd need to be induced. She was induced at Emory on Saturday afternoon. All this time I was afraid of the bills that would be slammed at us as we seem to have clearly gone out of the provisions of the package by the induction - but DW's health was paramount to me. But, God, being so good, she pushed without epidural on Sunday afternoon and was discharged on Wednesday. That's about 4 days in the hospital.

Then the big bills came. About 3 weeks later, the adjusted zero balance statement came in. To cut it short, our prepaid money covered for the induction and the 4 days stay in the hospital (that was amazing). Since it was VD, we got a refund of the exact difference. Epidural refund was to come a month after the delivery. Because we paid with a USD card (GTB), refund was easy and straight. We didn't open any account in America. Emory's in-house paed, Child Healthcare of Atlanta, CHOA charged five hundred plus for 'professional' fees the first time with a discount of 40% if payment is made 30 days after receipt of the bill. About a month and half later, the same CHOA sent another bill of 283 for the '2nd physician'. DW argued and shouted and told them she cannot pay after already getting a zero balance from the same CHOA. They offered the 40% discount but DW asked for a 70% discount! They accepted and we paid. We also engaged an external paed after delivery, Kidcare,..cost $140 on first visit, and $90 for the second visit.

SSN came in by mail about a week after delivery. DW waited for me to arrive before we picked up the BC and the other documentation (that was about 1 month after delivery). We got the Nigerian passport after 3 visits to the Consulate at Roswell. $77 fee, $30 for the business centre that we paid through, and $65 for money order to expedite it. If you are in Atlanta, you can PM me to give you tips because expediting is not really an option for all. You must have proof that you are travelling in a few days time. Got the passport one week after. US passport was expedited ($165 I think, not sure now) and collected same day, in fact in 3 hours sef. Infant ticket was bought over the phone at $150 or so.

Special thanks to God and all the contributors on this forum especially cfcchick, Eilenora, reniduke. I am available to assist expectant Emory mamas. God bless you all.

Ayo pls something has been bothering me about payment of bills, pls help clarify, is there a difference between discount and financial assistance? Some hospitals will say they are giving "financial assistance " to self pay individuals. I'm really scared it may be a baptized form of Medicaid. Pls help
