Primogeniture: First Nigerian Catholic Priest to Become SAN, Fr. Obiora, Delivers 6th Tansian University Inaugural Lecture Series

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The first Nigerian Catholic Priest to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Very Reverend Father Professor Edwin S.C Obiora, JSD, SAN, on February 13th 2026, delivered the 6th Tansian University inaugural Lecture Series.

Delivering the Lecture, entitled “Obfuscation of Primogeniture Syndrome and Dethronement of Ergonomic Organogram of the ‘Diokpala’ in Nigerian Law of Succession, Inheritance and Distribution of Estate", Fr. Obiora who was recently elevated to the rank of Professorship in the Faculty of Law, Tansian University, Umunya, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State described primogeniture as the state of being the first born child (generally male) among siblings”, saying that jurisprudentially, the term “connotes the common-law right of the first born son to inherit his ancestor’s estate, usually, to the exclusion of his younger siblings.

Delivering on the topic, the
resource person and Professor of Property Law, Very Rev. Fr. Edwin Obiorah, among other things, noted that the primogeniture syndrome has been seriously degraded, if not totally vanquished and obfuscated, by the continued democratization of society.

Fr. Obiorah, who is also the Chancellor and BoT Chairman of the university, explained that “with the unyielding application of the ‘Repugnancy Test’, statutorily established under Section 18(3) of the Evidence Act, 2011, and the resuscitation of the ‘Right to Acquire and Own Immovable Property’ anywhere in Nigeria, as enshrined in Section 42 and 43 of the 1999 Constitution, the era of primogeniture began to fade into oblivion, if not completely obscured or obliterated.'

According to the Professor of Property Law, now, Women married under the ‘Marriage Act’ now have the right to own private property,

'Currently, even women married under the ‘Native Law and Custom’ can now own landed property and fully deal with land on their own names, Widows now have the right to inherit their deceased husband’s landed property or estate.

'A female child, whether married or single, can now inherit her father’s estate like her male siblings. The customs of ‘nrachi’ or ‘ili ekpe’ are now null and void.

'The custom of a woman marrying another woman to rear children for her deceased husband or family is now abolished,' he emphasized.

In their separate speeches, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Eugene Nwadialor, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Professor Cater-Dike Umeoduagu, noted that inaugural lecture is one of the debts a Professor owes the University and the larger society, which they said helps in shaping narratives.

The University Dons commended the lecturer for deep research works and also for delivering on a core societal issue, which they said had incessantly tore families apart and pit siblings against another.

Dedication and Hard Work, Key to Meritorious Retirement - Mefor

By Rose Oranye

The Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, has stressed the need for public servants to be hardworking and dedicated to their jobs in order to reach the peak of their careers and retire meritoriously.

Speaking at a grand send-off held to celebrate the immediate past Director of News and Current Affairs, Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Mrs Juddy-Jeff Nwabueze, who bowed out of service after 35 years of service, Mefor maintained that being professional is also important for one to successfully serve and retire honourably.

According to him, being a public servant is not easy as one's opinion, no matter how wonderful, does not matter as he must reflect the position of government, its policies and programs.

He extolled Mrs Nwabueze's achievements and legacies, even as he thanked God for giving her grace to retire in good health. He urged her not to abandon the institution that nurtured and gave her the platform to make her mark.

"In life, we pray to make our stay in every opportunity given to us sublime; to leave our footprints in sands of time. That's what I sincerely believe she has accomplished.

"For you who are still in service, emulate her. If you are ever in doubt of reaching the peak of your career and leaving graciously, look at the process she passed, and the way she did it. Try to do the much you can. With God, you will reach there and retire meritoriously," he said.

The Managing Director of ABS, Mr Chris Molokwu, in his remarks, said they were sending her off with mixed feelings, and thanked God and the News Department, for their roles in putting up the send off, even as he urged them to apply the team spirit in the discharge of their duties.

In her remarks, Mrs Nwabueze expressed joy and gratitude for the honour given to her and prayed for unity and cooperation among ABS staff.

NOCEN GOVERNING COUNCIL APPROVES COMPULSORY RETIREMENT OF SIX STAFF MEMBERS, UPHOLDS DECISIONS ON DISCIPLINARY APPEALS

The Governing Council of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), at its meeting held on Tuesday, 27th January 2026, approved the compulsory retirement of six (6) staff members with immediate effect.

Dr. Rose N. Umezinwa, Dr. Veronica C. Okoli, and Mrs. Obumselu Christiana Ngozi were compulsorily retired following a comprehensive review of the Staff Audit Report. The Council’s decision was based on established findings relating to age discrepancies in their official records.

The compulsory retirement of Mr. Ojinna Ndubuisi and Mr. Adebisi Kunle was based on their consistent underperformance and being adjudged untrainable, despite several opportunities for growth and professional development over the years.

In addition, Dr. Bartholomew Sunday Okeke was compulsorily retired with immediate effect for gross misconduct. This decision was taken out of leniency, following several previous written warnings from Management, cautions, and a prior demotion in rank.

Council Upholds Decisions on Disciplinary Appeals

Furthermore, the Governing Council considered appeals submitted by Dr. Victor Okafor, Mr. Paschal Omenka, and Mr. Obiozor Ajie, all seeking reconsideration of issues relating to fair hearing and disciplinary matters.

After thorough evaluation of the submissions and the circumstances of each case, the Council resolved to uphold and reaffirm the earlier decisions of the former Governing Council.

However, in the case of Mr. Obiozor Ajie, the Council issued a strong caution, urging him to significantly improve his service delivery going forward. His promotion was approved with effect from January 2026.

We are ready to Purchase Expression of Interest Form for Tinubu - SSMN

...vows to mobilize 50,000 student voters

By Uchenna Ezeadigwe
Awka

Anambra State Students, acting under the auspices of the Solution Student Movement of Nigeria, Anambra state chapter, have declared their intention to contribute money to buy the “Expression Of Interest Form” for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to contest for a second term in office in 2027.

The group also said that they were ready to mobilise over 50,000 youths and students for his second term endorsement rally, adding that President Tinubu has proved within the last three years to be genuine a progressive worthy of their support.

The convener and student leader who is the Special Assistant to Governor Soludo on Student Matters, Hon Okoye Mathew Okpala (Nwa Soludo) made this known during a student meeting, held at theETF hall of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, (COOU) Igbariam campus, Anambra State, on Saturday, 14th Feb, 2026 to deliberate on the Theme: "Discovering Purpose and Working in Ordination 2026″.

According to Okpala, their primary interest had been and would remain the welfare, advancement and protection of students’ interests above any other consideration.

To them, Leadership he said, is about policies that directly impact the lives of the people, a reason he stressed the students were in clear and unwavering support of President Tinubu’s Second term in the 2027 general elections.

Under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigerian students he said had witnessed a historic intervention in the education sector through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

The approval of the zero-interest students’ loan scheme policy he noted has become a lifeline for over 983,706 Nigerian students who had already benefited with more than ₦183 billion disbursed so far. “This is not a promise for tomorrow; it is a reality happening today."

“For years, many brilliant young Nigerians were forced to abandon their dreams, not because they lacked intelligence, but because they lacked financial support.
“Some deferred admissions. Some dropped out. Some never returned to school. The zero-interest loan scheme restores dignity, opportunity, and hope to thousands of families across this nation. That is inclusive leadership”, he said.

He stressed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demonstrated that students are not an afterthought in governance and by investing in education financing and working towards economic stabilization, had shown he understands that the future of Nigeria lies in the classrooms, laboratories, and lecture halls of today. “On the other hand, we have heard statements from Peter Obi suggesting that the students’ loan scheme would be halted if he is elected. As someone whose responsibility is to defend students’ interests, I must ask: what happens to the hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries? What happens to the students who are relying on this support to complete their degrees?
“What happens to those who finally found hope after years of financial hardship?."

“If we truly care about students, we must protect policies that expand access to education not dismantle them. Even beyond politics, compassion demands that we acknowledge the painful history of students who were unable to further their education due to school fees and upkeep challenges”, he said.

Comrade Okoye, however noted that the students support for Tinubu was not based on sentiment, but on measurable impact, adding that as students they will always stand with policies that keep them in school, reduce financial burden, and secure their academic future.

For these reasons, he said the students from the zone proudly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the next election, because leadership must be measured by what it does for the people, especially for the youth who embody the future of the nation.
The students he emphasized must continue to choose progress, opportunity, and inclusive leadership above any other consideration.

Ozomagana Market Crisis: Fresh Facts Debunk Claims of Unlawful Detention

Contrary to recent media reports alleging unlawful detention of the former chairman of Ozomagana building materials Market, Onitsha, fresh findings have emerged indicating that the narrative being circulated is misleading and fails to present the full circumstances surrounding the matter.

A section of traders operating under the banner of an Elders’ Forum had earlier accused the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Abuja, of unlawfully detaining Mr. Obiora Okoro and called for the intervention of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

However, independent checks within the market community confirm that Mr. Okolo is no longer in detention, contrary to claims published by certain media outlets.

Sources disclosed that he was granted bail but was unable to meet the stipulated bail conditions at the time. Stakeholders have therefore questioned the credibility and thoroughness of reports suggesting he remains illegally detained.

Further investigations reveal that the controversy surrounding Mr. Okolo extends beyond mere leadership disputes.

Credible sources within the market disclosed that he and his executive members had earlier been formally dissolved following unresolved administrative and governance concerns within the market union.

Subsequently, the Anambra State Government approved the inauguration of a caretaker committee to restore order and ensure proper coordination of market affairs, with Mr. Tochukwu Umeh appointed as chairman.

Despite the dissolution, Mr. Okolo allegedly continued to parade himself as chairman, creating tension and division within the market community.

The crisis reportedly escalated when he allegedly supervised demolition of certain structures within the market without the consent of the duly inaugurated caretaker committee or the recognized landowners, the Modebe family.

During the demolition exercise, traders reportedly suffered losses as goods were said to have been destroyed.
More troubling allegations have also surfaced.

Sources within the market community alleged that Mr. Okolo is facing serious accusations, including fraudulent activities and the alleged forgery of the signature of a deceased individual in matters relating to market documentation.

It was gathered that these allegations formed part of the petitions that prompted law enforcement intervention.

A senior stakeholder in the market, who preferred anonymity, stated
“The issue is not about rewriting any agreement as claimed in some reports. The former chairman had already been dissolved along with his executives.

Government inaugurated a caretaker committee to restore order. He refused to comply and went ahead with demolition activities without approval.

There are also weighty allegations against him that cannot simply be ignored. Law enforcement was invited based on petitions, not for intimidation.”

Stakeholders further criticized sections of the media for what they described as publishing a one-sided narrative without adequate verification.

“It is unfortunate that some outlets rushed to press without confirming whether he was still in detention or understanding the nature of the allegations. The public deserves balanced reporting, not sympathy-driven headlines,” another trader remarked.

Observers note that the dispute underscores the importance of respecting constituted authorities within market unions, adhering to due process, and allowing investigative agencies to carry out their responsibilities without undue sensationalism.

As the matter continues to unfold, stakeholders have called for calm, urging traders and members of the public to allow lawful processes to take their course in the interest of stability, justice, and sustained commercial activities in Ozomagana Market, Onitsha.

Succour: Bishop Ezeokafor, JDPC Awka Diocese In Collaboration With HIFA Austria Pressent Over 12Million Naira Cheques to 84 Indigent Students, Pupils Accross All Denominations In Anambra

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor through the Justice, Development and Peace Caritas (JDPC), Awka Diocese in collaboration with the Help For All (HIFA) Initiative, Austria, a Non-Governmental Organization on Saturday, 7th February 2026 at Saint Patrick's Catholic Cathedral, Awka, paid the tuition fees of 84 poor and Indigent students across all denominations in Anambra State, totalling 12 million six Hundred thousand Naira.

Declaring the cheques presentation open, Bishop Ezeokafor exhorted the beneficiaries to work harder in their academic pursuit, saying that the only meaningful and fastest way they can achieve greatness and attained their full potentials was through access to quality education, urging them to be focused and resolute in their quest for a better and a greater future, emphasizing that without education they may not get to that height they so desired, adding that only the hardworking students would continue to enjoy the tuition fees payment package while the unserious ones would no longer take part in it.

The Charismatic and Influential Prelate who was represented by the Diocesan Chancellor, Reverend Father Charles Ndubuisi accompanied by the Education Secretary of Catholic Diocese of Awka, Reverend Father, Maximus Okonkwo charged the students to take their studies seriously and guard against distractions and anything that would deny them the opportunity of enjoying the largesse as well as losing track and focus.

The outspoken Cleric admonished students to take their education seriously and maintain good conduct as well.

Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries at JDPC, Awka Diocese Secretariat domiciled inside St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral Awka, the Executive Director of JDPC, Awka Diocese and the Chairman Anambra State HIFA Board, Rev Fr Levi Ukor said that they worked in partnership with HIFA Austria, noting that the Organization was formed and funded by retired teachers in Austria.

'The sponsors are interested in your results; your performance and reports from the school authority. These are the things that are encouraging the sponsors to increase the money instead of giving out the usual 125,000 Naira they are giving to each student. The total money we are spending this year is 12,0600,000. Twelve million six hundred thousand Naira. Last year we spent less. So, it is not a small money. We want people to know that the Church is spending this huge amount of money on Education,' he said.

The Executive Director thanked Bishop Ezeokafor for seeing that there was a need to help indigent people in securing their future through continuous education.

Fr Ukor who asserted that the Bishop could have channelled the funds to other areas but decided to always help the indigent, added that it was a long-standing event that did not begin this year.

He, however, added that the NGO moved a notch further by increasing the fund to closer to 13 million Naira. This he said was in recognition of the economic situation in the country.

In cautioning parents to make judicious use of the fund, the Director also challenged the students to always improve in their academic excellence, stating that it was the only way to appreciate HIFA and the Bishop.

According to Rev Fr Ukor, they scout for indigent students yearly after which the lucky ones would be thorough investigated to ascertain all facts before compiling and submitting their names to HIFA Austria for onward release of funds, noting that they also engage in building and renovation of schools, hospitals and that they were into provision of transportation to ease the stress and hardship occasioned by lack of adequate vehicles and means of transportation.

The Director of JDPC, Awka Diocese stated that they do not pay only tuition fees they equally pay for medical bills of the destitute and also train them on many skills acquisitions, saying that the programme was an annual event and that many indigent students and gifted children had been saved and empowered through the Initiative.

Rev Fr Ukor who said that Organization was Co-founded by Adolf Paster and Rev Fr Aaron Ekwu (Late) and currently managed by Adolf Paster's daughter noted that it was designed basically to cater for the poor in society and also help in closing the gap in infrastructure and other areas of life.

He announced that HIFA Austria was already in 6 states in Nigeria and had been carrying out back to back humanitarian services in Anambra State and Nigeria, emphasizing that the students were drawn from different schools in Anambra State not minding their religious or denominational inclinations and faith, saying that some were picked from schools in Awka, Nnewi, Onitsha, Ozubulu, Ihiala, Ekwuluobi and Orumba, among others, adding that the beneficiaries were gotten through the applications submitted during their monthly meetings.

Anambra Lawmakers Seek Stronger Oversight as Centre LSD, Partners Push Local Government Reforms

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have reiterated their commitment to strengthening oversight of local government administration during a strategic engagement with civil society organisations in Awka.

The one-day meeting, convened by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) in partnership with the International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), with support from the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, focused on improving transparency, accountability and governance at the grassroots.

The engagement formed part of the Strengthening Transparency, Accountability and Governance Process (STAGE 2) project, which aims to enhance legislative supervision and deepen democratic practices in the state’s local government system.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, said the Assembly remains committed to ensuring effective governance at the local level. He referenced the Local Government Administration Law enacted in October 2024 as a framework designed to improve grassroots administration.

While expressing support for local government autonomy, Udeze noted that responsibilities such as primary education and primary healthcare require clear coordination among the three tiers of government. He stressed that collaboration and defined legal structures are necessary to avoid conflicts and ensure efficient service delivery.

Executive Director of Centre LSD, Mr. Monday Osasah, said the meeting was aimed at strengthening legislative oversight and leadership capacity within the local government system. He explained that the STAGE 2 project, supported by the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), builds on earlier efforts that led to the conduct of local government elections in all 21 council areas in September 2024, the first in ten years.

Also speaking, IPCRC President and Chairman of the Anambra Civil Society Network, Prince Chris Azor, said the initiative seeks to consolidate democratic gains by equipping elected local government officials and reinforcing institutional frameworks. He emphasised sustained collaboration between lawmakers and civil society groups.

In a presentation, the Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Awka Branch, Barr. Michael Ozojiofor, examined constitutional and judicial issues surrounding local government autonomy. He observed that recent Supreme Court decisions have strengthened financial autonomy for local governments but noted that outstanding constitutional questions may require further review.

Lawmakers described the meeting as productive and reaffirmed their readiness to strengthen the local government system through legislation, oversight and regular elections.

Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that continued engagement would enhance transparency and accountability across local government areas in Anambra State.

Assasination Attempt: President of Umueri Village Ogbunike, Nze Levi Elobisi Speaks On Why Opposition Wants Him Out Of The Way

...Narrates How He Built Multi-million Naira 1200 Capacity Civic Centre In A few Months in Office, Shares Near-Death Experience in Hands of Assassins

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Following the reports of the attempted assassination to his life on the 10th of January 2026 and the illegal removal of his democratically elected executive on the 30th December 2025, by those he described as disgruntled elements and sore-losers, the President of Umueri Welfare Association, Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nze Levi Elobisi has come out to narrate his ordeal in the hands of those who came to assassinate him along St. Monic's Ogbunike.

Speaking on the major reasons why they were after his life, Nze Elobisi stated that the community came together to elect him and other executive members on the 18th July 2024, after he embarked on vigorous campaigns to all the kindreds that make up Umunri Village Ogbunike and emerged as the winner of the election.

He stated that the villagers grew increasingly tired of the immediate past executive, who they said spent over 17years in power without any to show for it and that those who have been benefitting illegally from the sales of Umueri lands wanted to all the tracks covered.

'Shortly after my emergence, I swung into action to ensure that I fulfilled my campaign promises to my people. I made two specific promises: one is to build a village hall where meetings will be held. My own sin is that I refused to bring out the proceeds from the sale of lands for embezzlement. I refused. I told them that the money belongs to Umunri Village Ogbunike, and it should be used judiciously towards the development of our community.

'I started building the current civic centre. I celebrated my one year in office in this current hall. 1200 capacity; 500 downstairs and 700 upstairs. This is something that has eluded us for ages. I was able to make it a reality in a few months in office. Inside this hall, we have security building. Another 250 capacity mini hall, interlocking, generator house, and many more. We started security our lands and walling schools, and everything was going on smoothly, not until these individuals who called themselves Imeobi came together on the 30th of December and said they've passed vote of no confidence on me and my executive.

'We didn't waste time approaching a court of competent jurisdiction because we are tenured. We are supposed to leave office after four years. These groups are made up of the immediate past executive and those who lost the election against and also the surveyor who cunningly hid many of our lands.

'They sworn to get me out of the way for trying to expose their shoddy deals in close 19years. They started mobilizing the youths against us. They went from house to house, threatening and destroying the properties and houses of our supporters and sympathizers. We have no other option than to make a formal report to the police from there to the Force Headquarters Abuja.

'You can have the combined team investigative police officers who came from Abuja to Umueri for a thorough investigation. I invited you, the media, to see the damages caused by these people. They were asking our people to leave the village and houses or risk being killed.

'I am calling on relevant authorities, particularly the Nigerian Police and the state government, to investigate the failed assassination attempt on my life. They wanted to eliminate me, but God saved me.

'The assassination attempt took place along the popular St. Monica's road Ogbunike, on January 10th, 2026, l was shot from the driver's side, and the bullet pierced the bus door and got to the passenger's door.

I purposely asked you people to come for the on-the-spot assessment tour with the Nigerian Police. Today, Saturday, January 31st, 2026. I was traumatised. the attack on my life came after several threats.

I want to personally beg Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to urgently intervene in this matter and save me , my family, my executive members, and the entire village.

'The achievements recorded by my regime threw them my detractors into deep confusion, frustration, and sleepless nights. They are angry that I could achieve what they could not achieve in close to 20years. Those who have been short-changing in the community are sad. They are the ones scheming for my removal.

'Even if they want to pass a vote of no confidence, there are ways it can be done. The constitutional proviso must be strictly adhered to. We have a way we can do these things, not that kangaroo things they did in the name of vote no confidence to install the same man, named Ikenna Onyekwuruje as a caretaker committee chairman.

'It was actually the Ikenna, otherwise known as Y2K, that was the one who stole the village blind. He brought to survey our lands, and he ended up siphoning and converting the community lands for personal use. Immediately, I found out what he did. I called him and asked him why he could even contemplate such an evil thing rather than show remorse he went around the village and started blackmailing and pitting the villagers against me. Some of these women and a few men you see in this village square have been brainwashed. The truth will be out soon.

Even if such a thing will take place, I should be the one to convoke the meeting, and it must be twice before a vote of no confidence could be passed on anyone.

'I am the only son of my family, I was unanimously elected to lead the village and to change the 17-year-old bad leadership of the pass administration headed by one Mr Ameachi Ikegbunam.

'I was elected alongside my executive on the July 14th, 2024 to serve for a good period of four years and within one year I was able to build a historic 1200 capacity civil centre with modern furnitures including double flats, borehole, restaurant/bar, recreation centre, solar panels and inverters for 24 hours electricity supply, among other amenities.

'My administration has also provided a stable electricity supply from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and pipeborne water for the entire village within the period under review.

'On the 30th December 2025, a vote of no confidence was passed upon me and my executive refusing to accept the evil agenda of sharing the money we generated from the sales of the village land.

'And the entire drama is orchestrated by the past executive led by Mr Ameachi Ikegbunam and Hon Charles Elobisi, my own brother.

'The past executive led this village for a bad 17 years without a single achievement. The only achievement is for them to be buying cartoons of beers and share among leaders of the nine quarters that constitute the Umueri village.

'The matter of vote of no confidence passed on me and my executive is currently ongoing at a court of competent jurisdiction and I strongly believe by the grace of Almighty God, it will be in my favour. I want justice from the government.

'As I speak to you, press men, the entire members of my executive have been forcefully chased away from the village to an unknown destination, leaving their loved ones in hunger, pains, and agony..

'I am very happy that police and media people are here to see things for themselves and to let the Anambra State Government, the South East leaders and the public at large to know what my people are currently going through in the hands of this heartless people living with us in Umueri village- Ogbunike in Oyi local government area of Anambra State.

The chairman, while again appealing to Governor Soludo to urgently intervened, noted that the matter was reported to the police for a proper investigation and possible persecution of the culprits.

Reacting, a member of the past executive, Hon Charles Elobisi, who spoke on behalf of others, described the development as mere allegations with no concrete evidence.

He said the embattled chairman of the village, Mr Levi Elobisi, was unanimously served with a vote of no confidence for selling over 150 plots of land without approval.

According to him, the constitution of the village empowers them to remove any leadership that operate against the wishes of the people. We don't remove him with our own power. We do that in accordance with the village's constitution. The entire village doesn't want him again. He should go and eat alone what he has stolen from the village, Mr Elobisi said, even as he urged the public to disregard the allegations.

Many villagers who spoke on the condition of anonymity rallied around the embattled President of Umueri village Ogbunike, describing Hon. Charles Elobisi's camp as trouble makers and meddlesome interloper. They asked them to allow Nze Levi Elobisi led team to continue with their good works.

Names of Nze Levi Elobisi led executive are follows: Nze Ikeme Chukwubuike - Secretary, Ndubuisi Elobisi- Asst. Secretary, Nze Nzeakor Kenechukwu -Welfare, Mbolu Uchenna - PRO, Onyekwuluje Chekwube - Fin. Sec. , Okonkwo Nonso - Provost, Anyadiegwu Arinze- Treasurer, Anadilim Emma - Welfare 2, Okeke Kene - Vice President and Obiegbu Chinedu - Provost 2.

Topic: "Silver Reflections, Golden Horizons: One Surgeon’s Pioneering Breast Cancer Research and Care in Nigeria."

Says Early Presentation Of Breast Cancer, Sure Way To Survive

A Professor of Surgery (Surgical Oncology) in the Faculty of Medicine, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof Stanley Anyanwu has urged women to report early signs of breast cancer, saying it is a sure way to remaining alive.

Anyanwu stated this during the Second Jubilee Academic Lecture (JAL) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka on Thursday. JAL is an academic lecture presented by academics who have been professors for over 25 years and still in active service. Anyanwu’s presentation is the second time it is taking place in Unizik.

The medical expert spoke on the theme: ‘Silver reflections, golden horizons: One surgeon’s lifesaving legacy in pioneering breast cancer research and care in Nigeria’ also enumerated several factors that hinder women from early presentation, insisting that the surest way to keep alive was to present oneself early.

He said: “If you present yourself early, we will treat you because it reduces the risk, but if you present late, there is nothing we can do about it.

He listed what contribute to late presentation of breast cancer among most African women as: negative symptoms interpretation, fear of possible consequences of the diagnosis, belief in alternative and complementary medicine.

“Others are: social relations and network, lack of trust and confidence in orthodox medicine and access to healthcare which may be physical or economic”.
To these he added belief in spirituality and spiritual linkage to disease, poverty and illiteracy on the part of the patients, as well as deceit of patients by quacks and missed diagnosis by some doctors is also contributory.”

Speaking on symptoms of breast cancer, Anyanwu said less than one percent patients presented with ‘screen-detected’ lesions, while breast mass, pain and nipple discharge remained the prevalent symptoms.

Other symptoms that can help early detection to include:cough, dyspnea, backache, weight loss, chest pain and jaundice.

Anyanwu recommended that breast cancer can be holistically tackled, saying: “Government must invest in strengthening the health system in Nigeria, clinicians must embrace innovation and tem work, young surgeons should also choose compassion as boldly as they choose science, while society should break the silence around breast cancer.

“Finally, I must say that research and continuous research can help overcome the problem of breast cancer”

Ndiowu Residents Storm Awka, Reaffirm Okekeife as their Validly Elected Monarch

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Hundreds of indigenes of Ndiowu community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday stormed Awka, the state capital in a show of solidarity with Chief Chibuzor Okekeifi, their newly elected traditional ruler.
Okekeifi won the traditional ruler of Ndiowu community election held on January 12, 2026 with 506 valid votes to beat the four other contestants to the throne.

The protesters numbering over 500 and bearing placards and banners of various inscriptions said they were in the state capital to appeal to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to issue a certificate of return to Chief Okekeifi as truly elected traditional ruler of the community.

The match took place barely 24 hours after a group of protesters stormed the government house to demand for annulment of the election that produced Okekeifi.

Spokesperson for the protesters and Chairman of Elders Council of Ndiowu Town and Leader, Ndiowu Progressives, Bar Christian Nnabuife said the solidarity march was to thank Governor Soludo for the peaceful Igweship election and to urge him to present certificate of return to Chief Okekeifi.

He said, 'We're here to appreciate the governor for restoring peace in our town and creating conducive atmosphere for the conduct of free, fair credible election that produced our monarch", he asserted.

Nnabuife was quick to dismiss calls for annulment of the election as academic exercise, and described those protesting the election of Okekeifi as terribly misinformed, misadvised and misguided people.

He also described the constitution they paraded as fake, insisting that the 1990 constitution approved by state government and Aguata High court remained the authentic document guiding the community.

'Ndiowu had 1990 constitution approved by government and Aguata High court, which declared that certain persons should no longer take part in election due to their dirty conduct."

On alleged exclusion of women in the election, Nnabuihe described as sacrilege involvement of women in traditional ruler's election.

'I stand to be corrected, there's no community in Anambra state where women are permitted to take part in selection of traditional ruler and that's is clearly stated in our constitution.

'A monarch is the custodian of people's culture. It's an abomination to involve women in such exercise. It has never happened anywhere.

'Those people who were here yesterday were terribly misinformed, misadvised and misguided. And the constitution they paraded was fake.

'A lot of them are regretting their journey yesterday. Their presence was nullity as far as majority of Ndiowu is concerned," he stressed.

Also speaking, Womwn President General of Ndiowu town, Hon. Oby Okoli also dismissed claims by the protesters that womenfolk were disenfranchised during the election as a lie. She insisted that women don't participate in the election of President Generals and Traditional Rulers.

'As women, we desire peace and progress for us, our children and children's children in Ndiowu."

Speaking on the same vein, the Youth Leader, Ndiowu Town, Mr. Sunday Kanu, also thanked Governor Soludo for providing the enabling environment and leadership support for a peaceful conduct of the Igweship election in Ndiowu.
He urged the governor not to allow few misguided elements in the community to truncate the election that was widely accepted in the community. He insists that youths of Ndiowu were solidly behind Chief Chibuzor Okekeifi as the monarch-elect.

According the US-based leader, the election has come and gone and what the people of Ndiowu were looking forward to was presentation of certificate to the eze-elect.

'There is nothing anyone can do to stop that wind of change blowing across Ndiowu right now. However, what we are yearning for now is to get the (Traditional Rulership) certification from the Anambra State Government and then the work of reconciliation will start in the community.

'As soon as the government confirms that Chief Chibuzor Okekeifi is the rightful elected Traditional Ruler of Ndiowu, we will begin the process.
He appealed to those staging protests to rally behind the newly elected monarch for the greater good of Ndiowu town.

COOU INAUGURATES ECONOMIC THINK-TANK AND BUSINESS SCHOOL COMMITTEES

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu
In a renewed effort to drive meaningful and large-scale development beyond its previous operational scope, COOU on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, inaugurated two strategic committees—the Economic Think-Tank Committee and the Business School Committee at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room.

Speaking during the inauguration, The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, described the committees as critical to the university’s growth and future direction. She noted that COOU must move beyond its past position in development indices and institutional rankings, adding that the university is now poised to take a leading role across key areas of academic and institutional development.

She explained that the responsibility of the Business School Committee is straightforward: to identify a suitable location for the Business School, develop a clear blueprint for what the school should represent, and show the commitment needed to bring the project to life.

Members of the Economic Think-Tank Committee, on the other hand, were tasked with sharing ideas freely, remaining focused, and working together to develop a common direction that will guide the university’s economic and developmental goals.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, visibility cannot be achieved without genuine leadership and consistent effort while stressing the need for continuous reflection and dedication to the university, noting that this approach remains the surest path to achieving the institution’s 3Vs—Values, Viability, and Visibility, which she said are already becoming evident.

Drawing from her many years of service at the university, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha observed that COOU is blessed with individuals full of ideas and creativity but stressed that the pressing question has always been how effectively those ideas are translated into tangible outcomes.

Also speaking at the Inauguration, Prof. Elis Idemobi, a Co-Chair of the committees, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for her leadership and inspiration while assuring the university management of the committees’ readiness to deliver on their mandate, stating that they have never been known for failures and would therefore work diligently to justify the confidence reposed in them.

2025 Audit Forum, Citizens Accountability Dialogue Ends In Awka

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The 2025 Audit Forum, Citizens Accountability Dialogue, has ended in Awka the Anambra State Capital with a call on the auditors to be alive to their responsibilities and shun acts capable of ruining their careers.

Speaking during the Dialogue, the Anambra State Auditor-General, Mr Akosa Okocha warned auditors against engaging in unprofessional conduct or face the wrath of law

Okocha explained that auditors should be wary of whatever they audited as well as ensure they were in compliance with the audit checklist and other relevant laws before appending signatures to them.

According to him, this was necessary because auditing is never done with sentiments due to consequences and importance the society holds to accountability and transparency administration.

Speaking on an audited account of Anambra State for the 2024 fiscal year, Okocha acknowledged improvement in the budgetary performance, including responses to audit queries which was why N750 million was yet to be accounted for unlike in the year 2023 where unresolved queries were valued at N2.5 billion.

'My office ensures that expectation gaps, lapses, and other breaches are identified as it occurs and rectified. These observed breaches are also reduced to the barest minimum. In the financial year 2023, the number of unresolved queries was about N2.5 billion but has reduced drastically to about N750 million in 2024.

“This is due to the proactive measure put in place by my office. Some of the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) mentioned in the report have responded and forwarded documented evidence to clarify the issues in the unresolved queries concerning their entity There have been some improvements in some of the areas we have challenges as I mentioned during last year’s Audit Forum,” he added.

In their separate lectures, Professor Tochukwu Okafor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and Dr. Adokwe Ekene urged auditors to embrace opportunities in digital technology to improve their knowledge and skills for improved service delivery.

The speakers argued that auditing, Anambra State, and Nigeria generally would record good governance because, according to them, transparency and accountability were necessary to exterminate corruption and improve the living conditions of the populace.

Also speaking, a principal consultant, Mr Ademola Okeleye stressed the needs for people involved to quickly respond to audit queries raised in 2024 accounts to enhance public confidence in corporate governance, while encouraging citizens to pay their taxes.

Commentary on the State of Amaokpala Development Union (A.D.U.)

History was made and a long-standing jinx broken on June 29, 2024, when the Amaokpala Community, against all odds, came together to elect a substantive Town Union Executive after more than eleven (11) years of caretaker administration.

The historic election produced Mr. Chukwujekwu Okoli (Onokomere) as the duly elected President General (PG) of Amaokpala Development Union. The process was formally monitored by the Anambra State Government, through the Office of the Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters in collaboration with ASATU.

The election, widely described by Ndi Amaokpala as “Liberation Day,” witnessed an unprecedented mass return of Amaokpala citizens from home and abroad, all eager to participate in the long-awaited democratic exercise. At the conclusion of the process, the state monitoring team confirmed that the election was free, fair, and credible, and subsequently issued Certificates of Return to the President General-elect and other members of the executive.

In line with the Amaokpala Constitution, which prescribes a three-year tenure, the elected executives were mandated to lead the community from June 29, 2024 to June 29, 2027. The Amaokpala Community has since reaffirmed its collective allegiance to the President General and his executive council throughout the lifespan of their constitutional mandate. Furthermore, the community has resolved to resist any illegal or unconstitutional attempt to undermine or impeach the leadership, in recognition of its demonstrated commitment to peace, unity, and development.

Achievements of the Current ADU Executive

Within just one year in office, the Amaokpala Development Union under the leadership of Mr. Chukwujekwu Okoli has recorded notable achievements, including but not limited to:

Phase I: Fencing of the Amaokpala Civic Centre

Conatructions of several bumps on the major road

Phase II: Moulding Block for Fencing Amaokpala Primary School.

Construction of gutters and drainage systems for effective erosion control

Strengthening of community security architecture

Electrification projects and maintenance of electricity supply within the community.

Many other significant projects are in pipeline for execution.

Strategic leadership that mobilized the community to massively support Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the most recent Anambra State gubernatorial election

Conclusion

Despite existing challenges, the people of Amaokpala have continued to express strong admiration for the leadership style of Mr. Chukwujekwu Okoli, consistently passing votes of confidence in his administration. Many community members describe him as a long-awaited reformer, credited with steering Amaokpala away from prolonged underdevelopment toward a future anchored on unity, peace, and sustainable growth.
