PARLIAMENTARY EVALUATION: 8TH ANAMBRA STATE ASSEMBLY: TWO YEARS OF PEOPLE-ORIENTED REPRESENTATION Today, Thursday 12th June, 2025, the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly has successfully completed her 2nd Session, otherwise called Second Anniversary with massive results in all aspects of legislative engagements.Inauagurated on June 12, 2023, the 8th State Assembly unanimously elected the Member Representing Ogbaru Two Constituency, Rt.Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze, Ph.D as the Speaker. His election was relatively peaceful, even as the House under his watch has demonstrated an appreciable degree of competence and diligence in the discharge of its onerous responsibilities. The Speaker, Rt Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze came fully prepared to pilot the affairs of the State Legislature, where he has been elected three times by his people of Ogbaru two constituency.Under his leadership, legislative business in the State has remarkably improved in the areas of enactment of quality laws, oversight duties and constituency relations, all geared towards the overall development of the State.Recall that the Speaker had in his inaugural speech, promised to reposition the Legislative Arm of Anambra State Government for optimal service delivery, through transformational reforms and robust partnership in collaboration with his colleagues. He also assured that they will make history in the State by being a House Ndi Anambra will be proud of in all aspects of legislative duties and accomplishments. In actualizing the goals of the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly, the Speaker, Rt.Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze has introduced several reforms aimed at enhancing their performance and service to the State and the citizenry.Astutely, he ensured that House Standing Committees and Adhoc Committees are headed by lawmakers who have cognitive experience in the areas for smooth operation. There has been a drastic attitudinal change regarding time of the Sitting of the House. Before now, Plenary could commence at any time, but the present Assembly has fixed ten o'clock in the morning as the sitting time. This positive change has recorded impressive compliance by the lawmakers and staff of the Legislature. Training programmes and workshops for both lawmakers and staff have remained constant features which is another reform introduced by the Speaker.Essentially, the introduction of every Tuesday morning prayer by the Speaker is yielding positive results in the lives of the lawmakers and staff as well as the peace and development of Anambra State. The 8th Anambra State House of Assembly is living up to her promise to assist the State government in repositioning government organs.Reports from various House Committees indicate that their oversight drive has helped in resuscitating dilapidated government agencies and advancing critical intervention measures in workers discipline, welfare and productivity. The impact of House oversight duties are really felt in all sectors of the State economy, evident in the massive transformational accomplishments of Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the State. In Constituency Relations also known as Effective Representation, the present 8th State Assembly has distinguished itself among her counterparts in terms of Legislator-Member Relationship/ Empowerment Programmes. The lawmakers have continued to ensure prudent and judicious utilization of whatever allowance that is provided for them in that regard. They have made building of constituency projects and empowerment of their constituents so competitive to the gains of members of their constituencies. Recently, the Speaker, Rt.Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze organized a Town Hall Meeting and Empowerment Programme where he empowered over three thousand members of his Ogbaru Two Constituency with various materials including sewing machines, grinding machines, generating sets and farm inputs in addition to shuttle buses he had distributed and gigantic Agricultural Processing Plant he is building at Atani to alleviate poverty in Ogbaru council area as well as his first phase of 10 Million Naira Education Grants he provided for Ogbaru students in Tertiary Institutions and Students Nurses among others.Same is the story from other twenty nine constituencies where lawmakers are contributing to the well-being of their constituents through life surviving and sustaining Empowerment Schemes. The current 8th Anambra State House of Assembly has done well in Law Making. So far, the House has passed a total of 31 Bills of which almost all of them have been assented to by Governor Chukwuma Soludo. In a clear language, passing 31 Bills in two year is not a small feat when we consider what it takes to pass one quality Bill.Comparatively, the 8th State Assembly is topping the chart in passage of impactful Bills among its counterparts in the country within the two year under review. It has also made 72 Resolutions arising from Motions. The Bills the House has passed include; Anambra State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission Bill, Anambra State House of Assembly Commission Amendment Bill, 2024/2025 Appropriation Bills, Secret Cult And Similar Activities Prohibition Bill, Environmental Management, Protection And Administration Bill, Trafficking In Persons Prohibition, Enforcement And Administration Bill, Anambra State Mission Schools Of Nursing And Midwifery Amended Bill, Anambra State Touting Prohibition Bill and Anambra State Market Safety Bill. Other landmark Bills passed by the 8th State Assembly are; Anambra State Homeland Security Amendment Bill, Anambra State Local Government Administration Bill, Anambra State Economic Planning And Development Bill, Anambra State Indigenous Traditional Medicine Bill, Anambra State Traditional rulers Amendment Bill, Anambra, Anambra State Development And Investment Corporation Bill, Anambra State Electricity Bill as well as Anambra State Commuters Manifest Scheme Bill among others. One impressive and unprecedented remark about these Bills passed by the 8th State Assembly is that out of the 31 Bills passed, about 10 are "Private Member Bills, in other words, they were originated and sponsored by individual lawmakers.Going by the records, this is the highest Private Member Bills sponsored by lawmakers since creation of the State in 1991. The harmonious working relationship existing between the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly and the Executive Arm has greatly strengthened development partnership and subsequent transformation of the State. The two Arms of the government, though distinct in operations and responsibilities, have continued to collaborate in realizing the development agenda of the present Soludo administration to the benefit of the entire citizenry. The synergy has played a fundamental role in fostering economic, social and political stability in Anambra State.Again, due largely to the concise and comprehensive nature of the Laws the present State Assembly enacts, the Judiciary Arm of the State finds it easy and more comfortable to make far-reaching interpretations of the Bills for public good. The cordial Legislative-Executive collaboration has clearly manifested in the great impact the 8th State Assembly has made towards achieving enduring security in the State. The Speaker, Rt.Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze in his wisdom, created a Special House Committee on Security to work with the House Standing Committee on Homeland Security. The success story is that after thirteen days of the passage of the Anambra State Homeland Security Bill by the House, Governor Chukwuma Soludo assented to it and promptly established a formidable Security Outfit, "Operation Udo Ga Achi"which has continued to work day and night for the peace and security of lives and property of Ndi Anambra. Indeed, expectations are high, but the interesting thing is that the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly under the watch of the Speaker, Rt Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze has proven to be on top of their legislative obligations.Hopes are equally high, but with great assurances that as the 8th Anambra Assembly enters the 3rd Session, greater impacts of the House shall be felt by Ndi Anambra and those doing business in the State. The 8th State Assembly is full of gratitude to God who has given them the enablements to record significant achievements thus far.The House highly commends the Clerk and the entire staff of the Legislature for their support and commitment to duty, while urging them to sustain the cordial working relationship between them and the lawmakers for enhanced productivity. The 8th Assembly also appreciates her partners, constituents, the Press and various Stakeholders for their support and encouragements so far. EMMA MADU SSA/Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, ANHA. 12th June, 2025.

Ozomagana Markets Caretaker Committee Chairman Refutes Past Exco Reinstatement Claims, Affirms State-backed Leadership By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu The Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Ozomagana Markets, Mr. Tochukwu Umeh has refuted certain media reports alleging the reinstatement of a previously dissolved executive body at the Ozomagana Building Materials Market in Onitsha South Local Government Area. In a release signed by Eby Iyke- Odili and made available to Newsmen in Onitsha, the statement described the reports as false, misleading, and capable of causing confusion and breach of public peace. According to the release, the chairman affirmed that the current caretaker committee remained the only legitimate leadership structure recognized by the State Government. 'The report circulating in some quarters suggesting that one Chief Obiora Okoro and his former executive have been reinstated by the Mayor of Onitsha South Local Government is not only incorrect but a deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of the State Government and disrupt the peace and order currently being enjoyed in the market. 'The facts are clear and on record; the former executive were removed following several petitions, allegations of financial misappropriation and gross abuse of office. 'After a detailed investigation carried out by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba in collaboration with other relevant bodies, the State Government in March 2025, duly inaugurated a caretaker committee led by Mr. Tochukwu Umeh on an interim basis. 'It is important to note that the March 2025 inauguration of the caretaker committee was initially on an interim basis, pending further assessments. 'Following a successful performance review and consultation with relevant stakeholders, the State Government, in May 2025, confirmed the committee led by Mr. Tochukwu Umeh, as the substantive caretaker leadership of the market,' Reacting to claims that the Mayor of Onitsha South had reinstated the former chairman, the chairman clarified that market leadership structures are under the supervision of the State Government, particularly through the Office of the Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, and that the Mayor was fully briefed on the process that led to the caretaker committee’s inauguration. 'While local governments play supportive roles in market regulation, leadership changes and administrative oversight remain the exclusive function of the state through the designated office. 'Any claims of reinstatement not rooted in this process are unauthorized and can not stand.' 'The chairman expressed concern that certain individuals are bent on creating unnecessary tension within the market by spreading unfounded narratives. He warned that such actions would not be tolerated. 'The government has zero tolerance for acts capable of destabilizing our markets. Those peddling misinformation or parading themselves under non-existent mandates will be held accountable.' He disclosed that the current caretaker committee, which is working closely with the Modebe family, who are landlords of the plaza, are continuing renovation efforts aimed at modernizing the market while protecting the interests of genuine traders. 'The present leadership has ensured fairness, resisted arbitrary shop rent increases, and upheld transparency in market dealings. That is why the State Government is standing firmly behind the committee,' he said. 'Traders and stakeholders in Ozomagala Market are advised to disregard false claims and continue cooperating with the legally constituted market leadership as appointed by the state and we urge the public and our traders to remain law-abiding and focused on the development. 'No amount of misinformation will derail the reforms being implemented to ensure that Anambra markets operate with integrity, structure, and accountability,' the chairman concluded.

Sporting Lagos' Aliu Baba’s hat trick denied the homeside a crucial win even though the draw cost the visiting team the chance of playing in NNL Super Eight.Solution FC goals were scored by Chukwuemeka Oyieke, Valentine Ugwu, and Reacting the Sporting Lagos coach Shola Adegun rued near-miss of qualifying for a playoffs. Agha Mba Describes Soludo As Youth O'clock Governor,Charges Anambra Youths To Key In By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu The Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Patrick Agha Mba, has called on youths across the state to rise to their civic responsibilities, saying it is golden time for them to play their own part in building a greater Anambra under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s Solution Agenda. The Commissioner made the call on Thursday while addressing youth leaders from various communities in the state during the maiden edition of their leadership training workshop held at the ASATU Hall, Government House, Awka. The two-day workshop, themed “The Role of ASATU Youth in Deepening and Consolidating Leadership, Security, Governance and Value System for Community Development in Line with the Solution Agenda of the Soludo Administration,” was organized by the Anambra State Association of Town Union Youth Wing (ASATU Youth), in collaboration with the Office of the Accountant-General of Local Government and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Awka. It also enjoyed strategic support from the Ministry of Youth Development and the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs. Speaking at the event, Hon. Agha Mba described Governor Soludo as a “Youth O’Clock Governor” whose policies and priorities have consistently reflected an unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and transformation. According to him, Anambra youths had never had it this good, as the present administration has placed them at the very core of its developmental blueprint. “This Governor has demonstrated, not in words but in action, that it is truly Youth O’Clock in Anambra State,” he declared. According to him, “From the launch of the ‘One Youth, Two Skills’ initiative, to other youth-centred projects, programmes and policies of the Solution Government, Mr. Governor has opened up multiple frontiers for youths to dream, create, and thrive.” The Commissioner emphasized that these youth-focused policies of the government are not mere political lip service, but deliberate mechanisms to engage the energy of young people, reduce unemployment, discourage criminality, and foster a culture of self-reliance, enterprise, and innovation. “Governor Soludo is intentional about youth development in Anambra. He is focused. What he can not do for Anambra youths is obviously not within the reach of government,” Hon. Mba stated. Urging the participants to leverage these opportunities and become active contributors to the state’s development, the Commissioner warned against any attitudes that is capable of sabotaging the progressive rise of the State, while also kicking against apathy, entitlement, or blame-shifting. “The governor is playing his part and playing it excellently well. Now, the ball is in your court. What are you doing with the opportunity you have? What legacy are you building in your community? It’s time to play your own part.” Reflecting on his personal journey, Hon. Agha Mba shared his humble rise from an ASATU Youth President to Local Government Chairman and now Commissioner for Youth Development, attributing his political growth to consistency, integrity, and about to make a difference. 'I am a product of community-based youth leadership. I’ve been where you are today. So, I know the enormous potential you carry. But you must stay focused, responsible, and positive-minded,' he charged. The Commissioner further urged the youth leaders to prioritize mentorship, continuous learning, and consultation with relevant stakeholders in their communities — including elders, professionals, and government agencies — in order to better improve and equip themselves to lead with greater wisdom, credibility, and vision. 'You must not lead in isolation. Something is even telling me that some of you live and lead from here in Awka instead of your communities, thereby missing out in tapping from the resourceful ideas, mentorship, wealth of knowledge and helpful experiences or counsel of the elders, elites and key stakeholders from your respective communities. You must learn to tap into the wisdom around you. Consult, ask questions, seek knowledge. That is how leaders grow,” he noted. In a subtle but strategic call for identity and grassroots visibility, Hon. Agha Mba also encouraged the youth leaders to proudly wear and promote their respective community youth uniforms during local functions instead of always donning the ASATU attire. “Charity begins at home,” he said, advising that “You must be ambassadors of your individual communities before you become ambassadors of ASATU or the state. Let people know where you’re coming from.” He also urged them to domesticate and internalize the ASATU Youth Shared Values, not merely as a motto, but as a guiding creed that should influence their thoughts, words, and actions in leadership. “If we all live by those shared values in our communities, we’ll be building a more progressive Anambra and the liveable, prosperous homeland envisioned by Mr. Governor,” he said. Describing the workshop as timely and visionary, the Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the ASATU Youth Wing and similar platforms aimed at grooming future leaders. He encouraged the participants to maximize the knowledge shared during the training, deepen their sense of civic duty, and be agents of peace, progress, and problem-solving in their various communities. 'You must be the example of the change you preach. Let your tenure be remembered for solving problems, not creating them. Hon. Agha Mba reminded the youths that leadership is not a title but a responsibility. “This is your time,” he emphasized. “It is Youth O’Clock in Anambra. But remember: time flies. What you do with this time will define whether you become a forgotten name or a remembered leader.” The well-attended event organized by the Comrade Ken Okoli-led ASATU Youth was also graced by the Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim; the Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly and member representing Anaocha II Constituency, Hon. Sir Ejike Okechukwu; State Commissioner for Lands, Prof. Offornze Amucheazi (SAN); and Social Development Specialist, Hon. Chudi Mojekwu, among others.

ANAMBRA READS RIOT ACT TO ILLEGAL INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS (ISPs) OPERATING IN STATE By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu The Anambra State Government, through the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB) and the Anambra State ICT Agency, has initiated a crackdown on unauthorized Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating across the state. This was contained in a statement signed by Barr. Chike Maduekwe, Executive Chairman/MD ANSPPB and Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata, CFA, MD/CEO and made available to Newsmen in Awka by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Anambra ICT Agency, Angela Nwanodu. The statement read in part 'This decisive action follows numerous reports of illegal road and sidewalk excavations, as well as the unauthorized erection of poles defacing our environment. 'Investigations have since revealed that several ISPs have been operating without the required submission of deployment plans and approvals. These illegal operations pose serious risks, including data breaches, poor service quality, and the defacement of public infrastructure. ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT DEBUNKS MISINFORMATION ON ‘NATIVE DOCTOR’ VIDEO By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu The attention of Anambra State Government has been drawn to a malicious and deliberately fabricated online publication and social media comments making spurious claims that the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, consulted a native doctor regarding his reelection prospects. The State Government hereby debunks the allegations as totally false. This was contained in a release signed by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Christian Aburime and made available to Newsmen in Awka. The statement read in part, 'For the interest of the general public, the video clip being maliciously circulated and misrepresented, as evidence of native doctor consultation, was taken during a recent official government meeting with Anambra-based content creators. The session, facilitated by the Special Senior Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, was organised to strengthen the partnership between the State Government and the creative industry as part of Governor Soludo’s commitment in encouraging and supporting Anambra’s creative economy. 'During the interactive session, content creators were encouraged to showcase their talents, ask questions, and share their concerns about the creative industry in the state. As part of the presentations, one of the content creators performed a native doctor skit, a common comic genre in Nigerian entertainment, to demonstrate their creative abilities to the Governor and other officials present. This was purely an entertainment performance by a content creator, not a consultation session. 'The State Government thus found it deeply disappointing that critics and political opponents would stoop so low as to deliberately fabricate malicious narratives from an innocent entertainment performance and spread misinformation to mislead the public. 'Rather than engage in frivolous consultations, Governor Soludo has consistently demonstrated his commitment to developing Anambra’s creative economy through investment plans as part of the state’s economic diversification strategy. The recently commissioned SOLUTION FUN CITY project is part of such investment plans. 'The State Government also clarified that Governor Soludo does not need consultations with any native doctor to win reelection, as he relies solely on the support of Ndi Anambra based on his impressive performance and focus on delivering the SOLUTION AGENDA by transforming Anambra State into a livable and prosperous homeland. 'Therefore, the Anambra State Government calls on Ndi Anambra, media channels and social media users to disregard the misinformation concerning the circulated video clip. The public is also urged to always verify information before sharing or amplifying content and reject malicious stories sponsored to mislead the public. 'As always, Governor Soludo remains committed to the development of Anambra State and will not be deterred by the antics of desperate political opponents who have chosen the path of falsehood over constructive engagement,' the statement read

'Citizen engagement is crucial for good governance as it ensures citizen voices are heard, promotes accountability, and strengthens public service delivery. Meaningful citizen engagement can lead to better governance, citizen empowerment, and enhanced development outcomes. 'Citizens' right to vote and to voice their opinion are cornerstones of a democratic society. Civic engagement is the basic precondition for an open and accountable government, stable and efficient democratic institutions, and good representation of community interests in the policy-making process. " 'Citizens' right to vote and to voice their opinion are cornerstones of a democratic society." 'Let me tell us that without the independent of our INEC and judiciary from the Executive arm of government, we are just chasing shadow in Nigeria, and our developing democracy is heading nowhere. Our national assembly has a big role to play in this direction. " 'Our national assembly must immediately step down the bill for compulsory voting. The bill is a big slap to our democracy and complete mockery to Nigerian democracy even before the international community. Rather, they should focus more on the remote cause of voter's apathy - unfulfilled political promises and failure of leadership. The bill is a violation of the fundamental human rights of the citizens and is also inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution as amended. 'Special thanks to Crystal Garden Estate for their generous sponsorship—proof that when purpose meets partnership, great things happen. This is just the beginning. The movement continues,' he concluded The event was sponsored by Crystal Garden Estate For his part, the Speaker, Mr Timothy Ofoegbu, said the event's success is a testament to the vision and dedication of the Nelson Whyte Foundation, whose ongoing commitment to grassroots empowerment continues to make waves. #CommunityFirst #NelsonWhyteFoundation #ObodoMuruAnya #CrystalGardenEstate #TimothyOfoegbu #GrassrootsChange #ImpactfulEvents

World Menstrual Hygiene Day: Soludo's Wife Leads Fight Against Period Poverty By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu On May 28, 2025, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Governor of Anambra State, commemorated World Menstrual Hygiene Day with a powerful statement addressing the pressing issue of period poverty in Nigeria. The event, held in Awka, the state capital, drew attention to the ongoing challenges surrounding menstrual hygiene and access to essential products, reinforcing the need for collaborative efforts to address these barriers. In a compelling statement, Mrs. Soludo cited official data revealing that approximately 37 million women and girls across Nigeria lack access to basic menstrual materials. 'This alarming figure stresses that period poverty remains a serious issue, impacting the dignity, education, and well-being of millions of girls and women nationwide,' she said. She described the statistic as a “clarion call” for government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private sector stakeholders, and communities to prioritize solutions that ensure the availability and affordability of menstrual products for those in dire need. Mrs. Soludo also addressed the pervasive cultural and social stigmas surrounding menstruation, which often exacerbate the challenges faced by women and girls. 'It’s imperative that we work to dismantle these stigmas,' she urged. 'Menstruation is a natural process, and no one should face discrimination, shame, or exclusion because of it. We must nurture open conversations and create supportive environments to normalize menstrual health.” As part of her commitment to tackling these issues, Mrs. Soludo highlighted the success of her Healthy Living Pad Bank program, an initiative under her Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo platform. The program, currently operational in over 100 secondary schools across Anambra State, provides free menstrual pads to schoolgirls, addressing hygiene challenges and emergencies that often lead to absenteeism. “Our goal is clear: no girl should be forced to stay away from the classroom because of her menstrual cycle,” she stated. “Hygiene is a fundamental part of our mission, and through the Pad Banks, we are empowering thousands of schoolgirls to manage their periods with confidence, pride, and dignity not shame or fear.' Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo has featured a series of activities, including a menstrual hygiene awareness campaign in select schools, where students were educated on proper menstrual health practices and the importance of hygiene. Community leaders, educators, and health advocates joined Mrs. Soludo in distributing menstrual pads and engaging in discussions to promote menstrual equity. The initiative has been lauded for its practical approach to addressing period poverty, with plans to expand the Pad Bank program to additional schools and communities in the state. Mrs. Soludo also called for increased investment in sustainable menstrual health solutions, such as reusable pads and menstrual education programs, to ensure long-term impact. 'This is not just a women’s issue; it’s a societal issue that demands collective responsibility,” she emphasized. “By ensuring access to menstrual products and education, we are investing in the future of our girls, their education, and their ability to contribute meaningfully to society.” The Anambra First Lady’s advocacy aligns with global efforts to mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28 to raise awareness about the importance of menstrual hygiene management and to break the silence around menstruation. Her initiatives have positioned Anambra State as a leader in addressing period poverty, setting a model for other states to emulate in the fight for menstrual equity.

Normalcy Returns To ASUU- COOU After Over 5 Years, Holds Congress, Lauds Soludo, Calls For Urgent Appointment of Substantive VC From Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu, Awka After years of internal crisis and prolonged dormancy, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) Chapter, has bounced back to life with renewed energy and purpose. The turning point came after the National ASUU body intervened, sending a reconciliation team to calm tensions and restore unity within the branch. This led to the conduct of the long-awaited election held on 18th February 2025, which produced Comrade Bruno Ibekilo as Chairman, alongside other executive members. Under this new leadership, the union, according to a source, revealed that it held its first congress on Friday, 16th May 2025, marking a fresh chapter for ASUU COOU. The congress, as gathered, focused on key issues affecting the university community, especially matters related to staff welfare, institutional stability, and governance. In his briefing, Comrade Bruno provided an update on ASUU activities at the branch, zonal, and national levels. 'During the meeting, it was gathered through a source that Congress acknowledged the commendable infrastructural interventions by the Anambra State Government under the leadership of the Visitor to the university, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR. 'These include efforts towards the restoration of electricity to the Uli campus after prolonged periods of darkness, power supply to the teaching hospital at the Awka campus, and the revamp of the power sub-station at Igbariam Other initiatives commended by the union include the impending flag-off of road construction within the Uli campus, installation of fibre optic cables for free Wi-Fi at Uli and Igbariam campuses, the near-completed trauma centre at the University Teaching Hospital, remodelling of university gates at Awka and Uli, and the planned construction of student hostels at the Uli campus. 'Financially, the union recognised the ₦100 million support for the establishment of the Medical Laboratory Science and Health Sciences project, and the ₦300 million intervention for programme upgrades and infrastructure, which contributed to the university’s recent full accreditation of major programmes — including Medicine and Nursing — by the National Universities Commission (NUC). 'However, despite these visible achievements, ASUU COOU expressed concern that the “Solution Footprint” has yet to directly impact staff welfare. The union pointed out that while infrastructure is very important, the well-being of the staff has not received similar attention. Issues such as the 25% and 35% wage awards, new minimum wage, earned academic allowances (EAA), pensions, retirement benefits, appraisal challenges, health insurance, and National Housing Fund contributions remain unresolved. 'To tackle these challenges, several committees were set up during the congress with clear terms of reference and deadlines. These include the Minimum Wage and Salary-Related Committee, earned academic allowances (EAA) Committee, and Appraisal Review Committee. A harmonisation committee was also established to collate and prepare all reports for presentation to the University Governing Council and the Visitor. It was further gathered that one of the most critical issues raised at the congress was the prolonged delay in appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor. Since the exit of Prof. Greg Nwakoby, in December 2023, the university has operated under acting leadership. 'The union expressed concerns that despite a public advertisement on 2nd January 2025 declaring the position of the Vice-Chancellor vacant, the process of appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor has stalled more than five months later. 'The congress warned that the absence of a substantive Vice-Chancellor is creating a leadership vacuum that threatens the peace and stability of the university. Members cited similar crises in other universities in the South-East, where delayed appointments of a substantive vice-chancellor have led to confusion and rivalry in these institutions. 'The union also raised concerns about prolonged acting tenures in other key positions, including the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Acting Bursar, and Acting University Librarian, a situation that contradicts obtainable university regulations. 'In a decisive move, the congress unanimously passed a motion to formally communicate its resolution on the Vice-Chancellor issue to the University Governing Council and the Visitor (a renowned academic). The union insisted that the ongoing appointment/selection process should be concluded urgently and in full compliance with COOU’s governing laws. 'There were also unease over reports that a committee set up by the institution’s governing Council to oversee the Senate in nominating and electing representatives to the Joint Council-Senate Selection Committee was inconsistent with the COOU statutes. The union stressed that such interference is a dangerous precedent that could plunge the university into fresh turmoil. It therefore called on both the University Senate and Council to carry out their roles independently, without bias, and in strict observance of due process. 'As COOU prepares to mark its 25th anniversary and host a combined convocation, ASUU COOU stressed that the time to act is now. The union maintained that only responsible leadership and urgent decisions can secure the future of the institution and maintain trust among staff and students alike,' a source concluded.
