...Congratulates Soludo, Ibezim On Their Re-election Victory

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Leadership of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Anambra State chapter, has beckoned on the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo to invest heavily in the Disability Commission and also ensure that the rights law is enforced adequately.

Addressing over 600 persons living with disabilities at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Amawbia, during the 2025 End-of-Year Meeting and Praise Day, the Chairman of JONAPWD Anambra State, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke.E.C, noted that going by their numerical strength they have the capacity to determine who governs the state, urging the members to glory in their individual and collective capabilities.

'Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, Esteemed Leaders of our Disability Community, Partners, Friends, and Well-wishers,I warmly welcome all of you to our End-of-the-Year Meeting and Prayer Summit in commemoration of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Our theme, “Let Us Praise God,” is a reminder that gratitude is a powerful testimony, even in the face of life’s challenges. Why We Should Praise God as Persons with Disabilities.

'Today, as persons with disabilities, we say Let us praise God because:God has given us life, which is the greatest gift of all.We are alive to see the end of another year, despite the difficulties that disability sometimes brings. We have strength, resilience, and courage that many people without disabilities may never understand. We have talents, potential, and unique abilities that continue to shine in our families, churches, workplaces, and communities. We are not defined by our disabilities, but by the grace of God and the purpose He has placed in our lives.

'God keeps opening doors—through empowerment programs, supportive leaders, and caring communities. We have each other as a community—standing together, supporting one another, and advocating with one voice.Indeed, even when society sees limitations, God sees possibilities. When people see challenges, God sees champions.

'When the world sees disability, God sees extraordinary ability. Why the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is CelebratedIt is important to remind ourselves why the world marks this special day every year:- To raise awareness about disability issues and the need for inclusive policies.- To promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in every nation.-

'To celebrate our contributions to society in education, business, culture, sports, governance, and innovation.- To highlight barriers that still limit full inclusion.- To encourage governments to implement disability laws and create accessible environments.- To push for equality, empowerment, and social justice for people living with disabilities.

'Most importantly, to remind the world that disability is not inability—and that persons with disabilities are full members of society. Exposition of the Global Theme: Fostering Disability Inclusive Society for Advancing Social Progress” means building a society where persons with disabilities are fully included in every aspect of life—education, health, employment, governance, infrastructure, and community participation. It emphasizes that true development cannot happen if people with disabilities are excluded or left behind.

'The theme highlights that when society removes barriers, provides equal opportunities, respects human rights, and creates accessible environments, everyone benefits.

'Inclusion leads to stronger communities, better social relationships, and improved economic growth. In simple terms, the theme reminds us that a society progresses faster and more sustainably when all its citizens—especially persons with disabilities—are empowered to contribute their talents, skills, and experiences.

'Congratulations to the Governor on His Second-Term Victory On behalf of the disability community of Anambra State, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, on his resounding victory for a second term in office.Your re-election is a clear confirmation of the trust and confidence the people of Anambra have in your leadership and transformational agenda. We celebrate with you, Your Excellency, and we pray that God will grant you more wisdom, strength, and good health to continue the good work you have already begun.

'Appreciation to the Governor and the First LadyWe remain deeply grateful to His Excellency and Her Excellency, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, our State Disability Rights Ambassador, for your unwavering commitment to uplifting the lives of persons with disabilities through empowerment initiatives, social welfare programs, and stronger institutional support.

'Persistent Challenges Despite the Disability Rights LawWhile we appreciate the progress, we still face real challenges such as:Inaccessibility of public buildings, transport, schools, and health facilities

'Limited employment opportunities for qualified persons with disabilitiesLack of proper enforcement of the Disability Rights LawDiscrimination and negative attitudes within communitiesShortage of assistive devices and inclusive education systemsLimited representation in political and decision-making spacesOur Expectations from Key StakeholdersTo achieve social progress, all hands must be on deck:Government: Enforce the Disability Rights Law, create accessible infrastructure, strengthen the Disability Commission, expand employment and empowerment opportunities.Church: Ensure inclusive worship spaces, promote acceptance and love, support families of persons with disabilities, and challenge stigma.

'Communities and Individuals: Stop discrimination, embrace respect and equality, and offer support where needed.Schools: Adopt inclusive education, provide accessible learning environments and teacher training.Hospitals: Improve accessibility, ensure respectful service, provide rehabilitation and early intervention services.

'Persons with Disabilities: continue to develop skills, aim higher, use opportunities wisely, unite as a community, and be positive examples. Appreciation:On behalf of the entire community of Persons with Disabilities in Anambra State, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the wife of the President, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her recent economic empowerment support to 250 Persons with Disabilities in our state.

'This gesture, delivered through the wife of our Governor, Her Excellency Dr. Nonye Soludo, is a great encouragement and a strong statement of commitment to the welfare and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria. We are deeply grateful for this act of kindness, which will go a long way in enhancing the economic independence and dignity of our members.

'To all beneficiaries, we encourage you to use this empowerment wisely, invest meaningfully, and ensure that it adds real value to your lives and your families. Let this support be a stepping stone to greater productivity, self-reliance, and contribution to society.

'After considering the report of the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics, and Privileges, the Assembly approved the extension of his suspension.

Greater Development Assured With Soludo’s Re-election - Odili

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

‎Chief Primus Odili( Okosisi Aguleri) a major All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) stalwart from the Anambra North Senatorial Zone, has dismissed any notion that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo , CFR, will slow his developmental strides after securing a second term. On the contrary, Odili asserts that the administration is more committed than ever to making Anambra the most livable and preferred destination for investors.

‎Speaking to reporters, Chief Odili, declared that Anambra is poised for an unprecedented phase of growth. He stated that based on the government's achievements in its first term and the projects launched just before re-election, the state will transform into a vast construction zone, birthing new mega-cities across every region.

‎“I have no doubt that the next four years will be a period of consolidating the foundation laid in the first term,” Odili said. “Governor Soludo leads with a clear vision and precise execution. If you study his administration, you will see a government that plans deeply and for the long term. The completed and ongoing projects are a testament to a determined effort to leave Anambra far better than it was found.”

‎He passionately illustrated this point: “Why shouldn't Ekwulobia join the league of major cities? Why shouldn’t Nnobi be preparing for that status? What stops Agulu from joining? And Okpoko—yes, Okpoko—why shouldn't it aspire to be a key urban center? I recently saw a sign that read, ‘Welcome to Mgbakwu City.’ This is now the new normal in Anambra State. Governor Soludo is done with the business of minting currency with the Central Bank, he is now minting emerging Cities, he is minting credible, sustainable cities towards the actualization of the dream Dubai / Taiwan as the gateway hub for Anambra’s economic and industrial growth.

‎Beyond the urban transformation, Odili highlighted that completed projects have already enhanced the state's economic and social connectivity. He expressed confidence that by the time Governor Soludo (Oluatuegwu) concludes his work, interconnectivity within Anambra will be unparalleled in the entire Southeast. He also assured that communities previously untouched by development will feel the impact of the Soludo-led APGA government in this second term.

‎Odili called for unity, urging all Anambra residents, including the opposition, to close ranks and offer the government the necessary support to build a truly livable and prosperous state.

‎Looking ahead, Odili believes that APGA government under Professor Soludo will position Anambra to compete favorably with major economic centers like Lagos. He pointed to the Governor's comprehensive approach, which has already addressed foundational issues like moral rejuvenation and sanitation while bringing development to every corner of the state.

‎He concluded by urging Ndi Anambra to remain faithful to APGA and heed its directives in future elections, noting that the party has consistently proven its commitment to the state's progress. Chief Odili cited the cumulative achievements of successive APGA governments as the bedrock of Anambra's steady development and called on opposition parties to quickly join hands in supporting the mega-development drive of Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Okunyeluife Ndigbo.

Steady Power: Anambra Issues Interim License to First Power Electricity Company Limited

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Anambra State government has issued an interim license to the First Power Electricity Company Limited as electricity distributor in the state.

Speaking at the event, yesterday, the Chairman Chief Executive Officer of Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC), Prof. Frank Okafor noted that the exercise is geared towards ensuring steady power supply in every part of the state.

Okafor observed that the State government of Professor Chukwuma Soludo is all out to make the state a choice destination by way of making power less luxury in the state.

According to him,
new issuance of a temporary license to First Power will last for one year, adding that the commission looks forward to improved power. He promised to ensure thorough oversight over the activities of the company to ensure that targets are met.

“Today, history is made in our dear Anambra State. A journey to adequately regulate the energy sector, in particular, the Electricity Business in Anambra State, is commenced.

“...We thank the Anambra State House of Assembly who brought the Anambra State Electricity Law (ANEL) into life. After the inauguration of ASERC Commissioners, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued an Order of Transfer of Regulatory Oversight of the Electricity Market in Anambra State, from NERC to the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

“The Commission, after due consideration, passed a resolution to issue interim licenses to companies licensed by NERC, and currently operational in the State, in order to legalize their operations in the State in line with the provisions of the Law.

“One such delicate operator is First Power Electricity Distribution Company Limited (FPEDC), and consequently, the Commission has deemed it expedient to legalize its operations in the state by the issuance of an interim license. We warn that there are terms and conditions for these, and we will regulate strictly.”

Receiving the license, the Group Managing Director of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, the parent body of First Power Electricity Distribution Company, represented by Dr Ernest Mupwaya assured that the the company will surpass the expectations of the state government in terms of performance.

He said: “FirstPower, our subsidiary responsible for distribution activities within Anambra State, is a product of that forward-looking strategy. Until today, FirstPower operated under the NERC licence issued to EEDC. However, the operating licence being conferred by the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission marks an important milestone in a transition that will ultimately deliver a vibrant, competitive, and dynamic electricity market in Anambra State.

“For us at EEDC and FirstPower, we can confidently say that we are fully aligned with the state’s development aspirations. Our growth plans for FirstPower are deliberately structured to complement the state’s industrialisation agenda, urban expansion, agricultural development, and SME competitiveness.

“We see in Anambra a transformation template that other jurisdictions experiencing challenges can study and adapt. FirstPower is ready to operate as a fully licensed entity under the state’s regulatory framework while continuing to uphold the highest standards of service delivery, safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence,” Mupwaya said.
Recall that Executive Governor Soludo had on the 9th of October 2025 inaugurated five distinguished professionals as commissioners to midwife the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC).
The certificate issuing ceremony was attended by officials of the Anambra State government, including the Commissioners for Information, Dr Law Mefor, and Power and Water Resources, Mr Julius Chukwuemeka.

Earlier in his reaction, Managing Director Firstpower Electricity Distribution Company Okechukwu Okafor, said the licensing was to formalise the company's presence and inform stakeholders that this is no longer EEDC in charge but an independent body saddled with the responsibility of distributing electricity in Anambra. "We are going to partner with the industrialists, the state government, and Ndi Anambra so that they will understand that our presence is geared towards a better solution to electricity. We want to change the narrative and target the customers to be happy. We need to take the message to them, provided there is goodwill. We hope that by the end of 2027, the billing rights of the customer will be metered for easy accountability.

Commissioner Nnake Gives Break Down of 2026 Budget Presentation

....Lauds Soludo

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The state Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Chiamaka Nnake, say capital budget makes up 79 per cent, recurrent 21 per cent, administrative sector increased by 12.5 per cent, economic sector increased by 27 per cent, health 12.2 per cent, infrastructure improvement by 27.7 per cent and environment by 138.8 per cent.

Nnake, who stated this while breaking down the budget during a press briefing at her office in Awka, said the core deliverables for the year include the Awka 2.0, development of new market, housing project, and land acquisition, among others.

'Our budget performance as of October was an impressive 61 per cent budget implementation. From November, it becomes a high point because of the dry season, and we hope that it will double. At least by December, we expect to reach 75 per cent.

'We have projected a N60bn revenue from Internally Generated Revenue. We had an N135bn budget deficit last year. One of the major sources of revenue for the implementation of this budget is taxation.

'What we are looking for is to scale up technology and expand the tax bracket to capture as many people as possible in the tax bracket. Taxation is not an Anambra thing. It is a universal thing. Revenue estimation from IGR is N72bn. Our budget is quite impressive.

'We won't borrow for consumption, but we could borrow for commercially-viable projects that should be able to pay back. For several years, our IGR performance has consistently fallen short of budgeted expectations and potential.

'In the coming weeks, we will be partnering to launch an aggressive, technology-driven renewal of our revenue system, blocking leakages, widening the tax net, supporting willing taxpayers, and enforcing compliance where necessary,' she concluded.

Some of those in attendance during the break down of the Budget included the State's Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, PhD, and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Planning and Budget, Lady Chinyere Nwabachili, among others

He stressed that the state has not borrowed since the beginning of his administration and may still maintain that record depending on 2026 revenue performance.

The Governor said the budget prioritizes security, infrastructure, economic transformation, and human capital development, which together take up more than 70 per cent of the proposed spending.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding the ongoing road revolution, dualizing major routes, completing new bridges, and strengthening mass transit systems through additional buses, new jetties, and improved waterway transportation.

He also highlighted progress on the development of three new cities: Awka 2.0, Greater Niger City, and the Aerotropolis/New Industrial City, alongside preparations for the commencementAnambra Mixed-Use Industrial City in 2026.

Efforts to enhance the Ease of Doing Business and attract both local and foreign investment, he said, would accelerate in the coming year.

On education, Soludo reported that the state will begin the construction of new public primary schools in 30 communities that currently have none while continuing major rehabilitation and upgrades across existing schools.

He added that two new specialist tertiary institutions will be established, and support for mission schools will remain strong through government deployment of teachers and additional collaborative measures.

In the health sector, the Governor pledged deeper interventions, including completion of the State College of Nursing, advancement of a specialist teaching hospital focusing on oncology and continued renovation of primary and secondary healthcare facilities.

He said that the free antenatal and delivery programme—which has already benefited over 161,000 women—will be sustained.

Soludo also disclosed that the administration will scale up the One Youth, Two Skills programme, which has produced thousands of young entrepreneurs and intensified digital skills development.

He said the Solution Innovation District (SID), designed as Anambra’s own Silicon Valley, is nearing completion and will serve as an innovation hub for young tech talents.

The Governor used the occasion to highlight achievements recorded since his inauguration, including major security improvements, over 900 kilometres of roads under construction, restoration of urban water schemes, construction of the new Government House complex, expansion of teaching and health personnel and the training of over 95,000 youths in digital skills.

He commended security agencies for restoring peace to Ihiala and other areas, noting that Anambra is now among the safest states in Nigeria.

Soludo thanked the legislature for its productivity, citing the passage of 11 landmark bills in 2024 and another 11 so far in 2025.

He urged the House to give accelerated consideration to the Appropriation Bill to sustain the development momentum as his administration entered the final stretch of its first term.

He assured lawmakers that his government remains committed to fiscal discipline, transparency, and the long-term vision of transforming Anambra into a livable and prosperous smart mega city as outlined in the Anambra Vision 2070 plan.

...Calls for Urgent Action

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Professor of Public Health Parasitology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and the Executive Director, Malaria Eradication and Safe Health Initiative of Nigeria (MESHI), Dennis Aribodor, PhD, says Nigeria remains the headquarters of killer diseases in the country, especially Malaria, HIV and Tuberculosis, bemoaning the lackadaisical attitude of the governments at all levels towards the health sector, even as he called for concerted efforts aimed at checkmating these diseases ravaging the nation.

Professor Aribodor made the declaration during a media meeting on the Global Fund Malaria Community-Led Monitoring Project being implemented by Malaria Eradication and Safe Health Initiative of Nigeria under the supervision of Civil Society in Malaria, Immunization and Nutrition, ACOMIN.

Speaking on the role of ACOMIN, the University Don said that ACOMIN plays a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s community health response with support from the Global Fund through the Principal Recipient to implement the Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) initiative under the GC7, saying that CLM empowers citizens to participate actively in identifying service delivery gaps, advocating for solutions, and holding duty-bearers accountable, thereby contributing to improving community health systems and outcomes.

'ACOMIN remains committed to supporting this effort, empowering communities, and promoting accountability to ensure better health outcomes for all.

'In Anambra State, the Community-Led Monitoring initiative being implemented by ACOMIN has yielded the following successes this year 1.Clearing of the Bushy Environment Around the PHC Through continuous advocacy to community stakeholders, including the traditional ruler, women leader, and youth leader, the SAT successfully mobilized community members to clear the overgrown bushes surrounding the PHC.

'This created a safer and more welcoming environment for both health workers and clients and helped restore community confidence in the facility.

'2.Improved Health Workforce Attendance and AvailabilityThe challenge of staff shortage was addressed following the SAT’s advocacy visit to the Director of Primary Health Care, Awka South. As a result of the engagement, a health worker who had previously abandoned his duty resumed consistent attendance. Additionally, a male staff member was deployed to support the Officer in Charge (OIC), helping reduce the workload and improve service delivery at the facility.

'3.Increase in Community Patronage and Support for the PHCLow community patronage was resolved through advocacy visits to the Women Town Union and other community influencers.

'These engagements encouraged women and families to utilize the PHC for their health needs. As a result, community support improved significantly, and more residents began accessing services at the health center Call to ActionTo move from shortages to sustainable solutions, ACOMIN urges all stakeholders to get involved, act decisively, and collaboratively to strengthen Nigeria’s community health system: Government Agencies: Federal, state, and local governments must prioritize health systems strengthening through increased and better-targeted investments.

'This includes recruiting and retaining qualified health workers, ensuring a consistent supply of HIV, TB, and malaria commodities also; renovating and expanding dilapidated facilities.

'Shortages to Solutions: Addressing Staff Shortage, Commodities Stock-out, and Infrastructure Gaps in Community HealthAcross Nigerian communities, it has been observed that our primary healthcare facilities are mostly under strain. From overworked staff due to inadequate human resources for health, empty drug shelves, and leaking roofs. These challenges threaten the quality delivery of essential HIV, TB, and malaria services that millions of community members rely on. The impact is not abstract; it is felt daily in the lives of mothers who walk long distances only to find no nurse on duty, patients turned away due to stock-outs, and communities losing confidence in their local health systems.

'The Triple Challenge: shortage of staff, commodities Stock-out, and Infrastructure Gaps Shortage of Health WorkersAcross several facilities, inadequate staffing remains one of the most significant barriers to quality healthcare. Many primary health centres operate with only one or two staff members who must cover day and night shifts, leading to fatigue, burnout, an unruly attitude to patients, and inconsistent service delivery.

'The absence of security personnel also exposes facilities to theft and vandalism. Commodity Stock-outsStock-outs of essential drugs and testing commodities continue to disrupt services for HIV, TB, and malaria.

'In the current and previous quarters, several facilities reported shortages of HIV test kits, antimalarial drugs, and rapid diagnostic tools, forcing patients to seek care elsewhere or abandon treatment altogether.

'Infrastructural DecayThe deteriorating state of many health facilities is an increasing concern. Ageing buildings with cracked walls, leaking roofs, and inadequate ventilation pose safety risks for both patients and healthcare providers. In some facilities, there are no functional toilets, power supply, or storage spaces for drugs. These conditions compromise infection prevention, discourage service uptake, and erode the dignity of care that communities deserve.

'Private Sector and Philanthropists: The business community and philanthropic organizations have a crucial role to play in bridging existing resource gaps. By partnering with the government and civil society, they can sponsor staff welfare initiatives, supply essential medical commodities, and support the refurbishment of healthcare infrastructure.

'The media remain a vital ally in amplifying community voices, spotlighting the realities on the ground, and holding decision-makers accountable.

'Journalists and broadcasters can help sustain public attention on health sector challenges, advocate for transparency in resource allocation, and celebrate success stories of communities driving change through the Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) initiative.

'Community, traditional, and Religious Leaders: these leaders play a vital role in strengthening trust and accountability within the health system. We encourage them to mobilize their communities to actively participate in monitoring the delivery of HIV, TB, and Malaria services, ensuring that identified gaps in staffing, health commodities supplies, and infrastructure are brought to the attention of relevant authorities.

'By leveraging their influence, these leaders can foster behavioural change, dispel myths about healthcare services, and advocate for improved government and partner investments in health facilities. Their united voice can inspire greater community ownership and sustain local action toward stronger, more resilient healthcare systems.

'These triple challenges across Nigeria’s health facilities require coordinated action from the government, private partners, media, and communities. Through advocacy and investment, we can transform these facilities into reliable centres of care,' he concluded.

In their separate speeches, the State Chairman of ACOMIN, Mrs Chioma Okeke; the Director of Public Health, State Ministry of Health, Dr. Afam Anaeme, the Programme Manager of Anambra State Malaria Elimination Programme and the traditional ruler of Umuawulu ,HRM, Dr Joel Egwuonwu represented Chief Nweke Sunday (Ochudo) collectively urged the government both federal and state governments to take proactive steps towards reducing the break out of deadly diseases in Nigeria to the barest minimum.

The compassionate and egalitarian Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Chief (Sir) Stanley Nkwoka (Ochendo Global) has actually lived out the Biblical injunction of Jesus Christ, where he stressed the importance of identifying and visiting the prisoners by worshipping with the inmates of Corectional Centre, Onitsha.

The Charismatic and influential Mayor was received by the Chancellor of Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, Very Rev. Fr. Prudentius Emeka Aroh and the Chaplain of the Correctional Centre, Rev. Fr Nnamdi and the prison warders.

Mayor's visit came the inmates the opportunity to praise and worship God again and also to make all manner of life changing vows and to partake in God's blessings and forgiveness.

FG Continued Neglect of Our Demands: Full Scale Industrial Action Imminent - ASUU Owerri Zone Leadership, Gives 21st November Deadline

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Following the alleged continued neglects of the demands of the members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, comprising Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam; Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO); Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU); and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, the leadership given November 21st Deadline as a day it will embark on full scale Industrial action.

According to the statement signed by the ASUU Owerri Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Dennis Aribodor and made available to newsmen in Awka during a press conference held at the ASUU–UNIZIK Secretariat said it has become necessary following what they described as total neglects of their demands.

'We have no alternative but to embark on full-scale industrial action from 21 November 2025 if the Federal Government of Nigeria fails to address their longstanding demands.

'This press conference was necessitated by the need to alert all critical stakeholders in the Nigerian university system and, indeed, the general public, that time is running out to prevent full-scale industrial action in our public universities.

'Please recall that ASUU, out of respect for students, parents, the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and other well-meaning Nigerians, reviewed the then ongoing two-week warning strike, declared on 13 October 2025, and resolved to suspend the strike action on 22 October 2025, five days before the expiration of the two-week period. The union gave a one-month window to the government to resolve all issues. Eight days to the end of this one-month window, where are we?

'ASUU Owerri Zone, regrettably, has observed with consternation the government’s continuous failure to prioritise education, as it perceives education as a commercial good that must be self-sustaining instead of a social good that guarantees peace, progress, and national development. The Zone further reviewed the progress made in the renegotiation process since the suspension of the warning strike over two weeks ago and rejected the proposed salary increment, which we consider an insult to Nigerian university academic staff.

'The proposal is not capable of bringing out the best among university lecturers and can not reverse the perennial brain drain syndrome that has devastated our universities for decades. The salary and conditions-of-service components of the renegotiation process remain a sore point that needs a radical approach to stem the tide in the system.

'To us in ASUU Owerri Zone, government functionaries are undermining the negotiation process by the subtle misrepresentation of offers and selective implementation of agreements just to score cheap political points. The part payment of promotion arrears dating as far back as 2017, and the release of third-party deductions—which are part of members’ salaries for years—are mere confidence measures and must not be construed as the substantial issues of the negotiation process. The framing of the government’s implementation is not a true reflection of reality, and this strategy portends great danger to the renegotiation as it casts doubt on the sincerity of the government. The government’s objective must not be to win the narrative but to solve the real problems. That is the way forward.

'Government is hereby advised to utilise the remaining days to the expiration of the one-month window given to achieve a holistic resolution of the issues, particularly to uplift the take-home pay of academics in Nigeria The surest way to protect the future of our country is to invest adequately in education. Education is a public good. Education, as the bedrock of any society, deserves special attention in Nigeria given the deficit in our educational infrastructure. Contrary to claims of paucity of funds and economic downturn, evidence shows that there has been a quantum leap in the revenue profile of both the federal and state governments.

'For example, in 2022, according to data from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee, the states received a total of ₦3.92 trillion, while the figure for 2024 was ₦5.81 trillion, representing an increase of over 62%. Similarly, the federal government received ₦3.42 trillion in 2022 and ₦4.65 trillion in 2024, an increase of over 70%. It is political will—or lack thereof—and not economic factors that have undermined the resolution of this renegotiation process, as the revenue profile above clearly supports this claim.

'The Nigerian Government should not be comfortable with lecturers being on the same salary for 16 years amidst all the devaluations and inflation.

'ASUU Owerri Zone is therefore calling on all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, students, the NLC, the media, and civil society, to urge the government to do the right thing and give lecturers a living wage within the remaining days of the one-month window period.

'ASUU Owerri Zone also expects 100% payment of all outstanding arrears, including the 25–35% wage award, three-and-a-half months’ withheld salaries, promotion arrears, and third-party deductions. These are our minimum demands to avoid the resumption of the suspended strike and to ensure industrial harmony in our universities,' the union concluded.

November 8: CTA is an Independent Civic Organization, We Are Here for Guber Election

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Lead Expert for Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) says association is an independent civic organization that has been actively involved in election observation in Nigeria since its inception and is an accredited domestic election observer group.

The Lead Expert Team for the Anambra Governorship Election, Professor Alex Asigbo, who stated this during a briefing in Awka, announced the deployment of 50 trained observers to monitor the conduct of political parties and electoral processes during the Anambra State gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday, 8th November 2025.

He explained that the
“CTA will deploy 50 observers who will send in real-time reports, allowing us to have firsthand information on events as they unfold on election day,” Asigbo stated.

He noted that citizens of Anambra State have expressed high expectations for a transparent and credible process, given the incremental improvements observed in other off-season elections, particularly following the introduction of technological innovations into Nigeria’s electoral system.

According to him, these innovations—first prominently deployed during the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections - have energized Nigerian voters, especially the youth, who have become politically active in an unprecedented manner.

'In line with our established practice, CTA has opened its Situation Room here in Awka. We have 50 trained election observers strategically deployed across the 21 Local Government Areas of Anambra State. These observers have been properly trained on election monitoring and adherence to INEC guidelines,” he said.
As Anambra citizens, known as Ndi Anambra, head to the polls, Professor Asigbo highlighted key issues deserving attention.

He observed that while no major security infractions were recorded during campaigns over the past three months, some flashpoints remain sensitive, particularly in Orumba South, Ihiala, Ogbaru, and adjoining areas.

He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for initiating disciplinary action against erring officials in previous elections but emphasized that more accountability is needed.

'Integrity should be the watchword for INEC staff. Ndi Anambra expects nothing less. INEC as an institution and its personnel must live above board. Electoral officers at the LGA level must ensure early mobilization of materials and personnel to polling units in collaboration with the NURTW,'he said.

Asigbo also called for stronger inter-agency collaboration among security bodies to guarantee the safety of citizens, election materials, and INEC personnel before, during, and after the polls.

Encouraging voters to turn out en masse, he reminded them of the importance of civic participation in shaping governance at the state level.

'We urge the citizens of Anambra to take this election seriously and turn out in high numbers. Vote buying and trading must be completely rejected. Citizens should conduct themselves peacefully and ensure their votes count,”he said.

He condemned the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media by “unscrupulous elements” seeking to undermine electoral integrity and create tension.

'We appeal to journalists and the mainstream media to remain neutral and resist amplifying unverified or misleading information. Media neutrality is crucial in mitigating the dangerous effects of misinformation during and after the elections,' he added..
