Travel / Re: Nigerians In Ghana Decry Exploitation As Govt Imposes $120 For SIM Card Registra by buffox: 1:15pm On Jan 14, 2023
Not true. The card is called the "Non-Citizen card" and applies to all foreigners in the country trying to access services - not just Nigerians.

GLeesMODEL:
Nigerians In Ghana Decry Exploitation As Govt Imposes $120 For SIM Card Registration

Nigerians resident in Ghana have accused Accra of deliberately exploiting and marginalizing them, urging the Nigerian ministry of foreign affairs, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM and other relevant agencies to intervene.

They said the government in Ghana has singled out Nigerians, estimated to make up the 80 percent of foreigners in Ghana as the only revenue generation means to fund its 240 million dollars.

It is estimated that about five million Nigerians are living in Ghana, including those studying in the country.

A Nigerian resident who does not want his name mentioned accused Ghana of imposing a $120 fee on all Nigerians to obtain Ghana national identification card which will enable them to among other things register their SIM cards in order to have access to telephone communication.

"Ghana government has issues order to block all telephone lines, mobile phones, businesses mainly belonging to Nigerians if they fail to pay 120 dollars.

"Many Nigerians can no longer access their families, loved ones and carry their daily activities and businesses through their mobile phone lines, making life difficult for Nigerians with hatred.

"Most Nigerian who have their Nigerian passport and ECOWAS pasport were denied rights to use their national identity to register their mobile phone lines, even those who have Ghana residents permit with Nigeria passport were also denied access to mobile phone line unless they pay 120 dollars", Jackson alleged.

He listed Britain, America, China, Turkey, Dubai, Egypt, Morocco among others as countries that recognize Nigerian passport as an ID to access mobile telephone line, wondering why the neighbouring Ghana has targeted Nigerians for exploitation.

While stating that the identification card is free for Ghana nationals, the Nigerian alleged that the communication giant, MTN has sued Ghana Government over the obnoxious policy which has cost it at least one million subscribers since the policy was introduced.

Ghana government he said Imposes on average Nigerian half a million Naira charge as fee to process residence permit for one year to officially operate business and live in the country.

He said a petition has been submitted to the Nigerian Senate for appropriate action.

All efforts to reach Ghana's High Commission in Abuja for a comment as at the moment of this report proved abortive.

And what is this move supposed to achieve. Galaxy has been in existence for over 10 years and has not been able to achieve 50% of its mandate; most civil servants still use yahoo mail to send confidential government documents.

Now the cake is baked and looks tasty, now they want to ‘takeover’...this should be resisted. They can make suggestions on how to host and manage the database due to sensitivity fo the information but the management should be left with current system custodians with appropriate NDAs in place.

I just tire for some comments here, they talk as if they living in America or UK.

This government is just giving them what to talk till the end of this week, I wonder how they even reason, does anything even work in this country?

They keep shouting recall, why not ask why they haven't start or finish the process all this while or is this the first time they are hearing about Dino recall case?

Typical Nigeria. Thats why we get the kind of leadership we have - we support it when it fits us. The people that voted in the main election that brought Dino is about half of those 'signing' recall register. It would all end in futility and money wasted. The governor is spending so much money to emphasize his authority over every politician in the state and to think there are people who would even speak for this illegality - when they forge their 2019 election result we would meet here and debate again - nansense!

He is no more a valid senator after the exercise but whoever is elected also is not valid until they are sworn in by the SP.

Even if Dino is recalled, he would go to court - we know judgement would be delayed. Saraki would harp on that and not raise the matter or swear in anyone. Inec needs a new timetable to conduct another election anyways. All these within 1 month of new primaries? What is all this worth except ego of a few people??

That is exactly what we are saying!
If there is a STANDARD RATE, that will serve as a basis for negotiation and both Client and COntractor can then engage in bargaining, putting into consideration, any peculiar nature of the job at hand.

But such difference, after negotiation, should not be too far from the standard rate.
Ofcourse, this would not allow the Contractor, who is more experienced, to cheat the Client, who is just a novice to such negotiation.

I dont see any Contractor, smiling at me right now! grin grin grin

They sure wont like you very much cheesy. But this discussion needs to be had and there is no shying from it. As I type, I have a quote of NGN 3.7m to plaster a 5 bedroom duplex (labour and material) staring at me! The built area of the land is only 126 sqm - scaffolding in this quote is 550k smiley.

I definitely know what I am doing with this one but I think this idea of getting a 'big' project is being taken too far. No need to roll the dice on every one that invites you to quote - its not free money with a lot of us.

ilebaami: You are so sure that you are right. However you are totally wrong. GEJ has been on the popular side with the people in each of the cases you mentioned. You are not from the SS so your view is coloured by a compromised press. I feel genuinely sorry that smart people like you are not allowed to know the truth. You soon will.

I dont claim to be from the SS and thus would appreciate some education: your reply infers the following:

- that GEJ was more popular in Delta state than Ibori.
- that GEJ had support of the masses in sending Henry Okah to jail.
- that GEJ had unanimous support in the battle with Sylva even though he had to eliminate the risk of him contesting primaries.

None of my interactions + any info out there in public connotes this. Perhaps you can help my little knowledge.
Politics / Re: Rivers' Speaker Impeached, Amaechi Storms Assembly As Fight Erupts? by buffox: 10:26pm On Jul 09, 2013
Out of all of this; I cannot help but ponder on this question Where would GEJ go back to as a home land after his dictatorial reign?

Here is a list of all those GEJ has decided to terminate politically and send to the gallows:

- James Ibori (Delta State - SS Region)
- Henry Okah (Rivers State - SS Region)
- Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa State - SS Region)
- Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers State - SS Region)?

There is life after presidency - that's the bit I cannot help but foresee a bleak one for him!

The gullibility and outright narrow depth of thinking on this thread makes me fear for these so-called 'future leaders' of our country. When we try to twist sensibilities to suit ourselves, then it exposes us more than ever. The earlier we realise we are booby trapped by a gang of incompetent and selfish leaders the better.

Food for thought.

- With all the security and army in abuja, BH is steadily carrying out attacks there, you think the south is really so difficult to attack for someone who is ready to blow himself up? It is clear someone somewhere has defined the operational area.

- Henry Okah has made some damaging statements that your sitting president coordinated the first ever bomb attack in the centre of the capital; who has said anything about that?

- I hear a lot of stuff about Buhari and his "bloody dog and baboon joke", but I havent heard anything our comrade who has ordered riggers to be killed at sight.

Choose your battles wisely, because in the end, when the next 3 years are finished, and there is no development in your home cos ur a christian or a southerner, your conscience if it has gained any maturity should feast on your mind. Goodluck with blaming all your problems on a section of the country.

I think it is right to give GJ or whoever operates that fb page the benefit of doubt that they are not techie people, and cannot immediately understand how mediocre what they are seeking is.

At some point, they would understand the details of what he wants to give them and throw it away - i hope.

How on earth can a phone without a GPS chip be tracked to a position of precision? Ajanle has gone through the details but me just think this man is just being a politician and it was supposed to be another "GJ listens to the people's stunt' or "GJ is very accessible"! Rubbish

Politics / N. Assembly Approves N 17 Billion For Independence! Our Screams Not Loud Enough? by buffox: 2:20am On Jul 26, 2010
Lawmakers approve N17b for independence anniversary

In a bizarre move, the National Assembly which previously criticised the budget for the celebration of Nigeria's 50th independence anniversary, calling it excessive, has turned round to approve a figure that is N7 billion more than the Presidency had requested.

The President had initially asked for N16.4 billion for the anniversary but later reviewed it downwards to N9.48 billion following severe criticisms from the public, civil society groups and even the lawmakers.

When the request for N16.4billion was turned down on July 7 and returned to the Presidency, President Goodluck Jonathan scaled down the request to N9.48 billion in a revised supplementary budget. However, the lawmakers have now approved N17.195 billion, an excess of about N7.715 billion for the anniversary.

The problem with MTN's 3.5G is that it is not really adequate, if our internet access is dependent on wireless access, then we need wimax or higher to satisfy the needs, unfortunately, the oyinbo man that is developing these technologies is not moving at a pace that we need, we are bound by technologies that are developed overseas. Frequency spectrum for rollout of these services too is another issue, the frequencies are expensive and not adequate, there is so much you can do with 5MHz of spectrum (if you like multiplex until you die). Peering among operators is another issue, why should my mail go all the way to south africa before it lands in the yahoo mail box of my colleague sitting down the hall (it is assumed we do not have a mail server at work), the government needs to do something about this, internet services will boom with proper peering arrangements.

^^ I know MTN is about to get on the WiMAX train and quick too; roll-out might actually begin by end of the year or early next year. But wimax is already new set of equipment, different network altogether, thats my point. The only economies of scale they can get with this is with their existing towers and shelters. The speed would come but still @ a price, especially when they know they are exclusive with speed.

But the coming of main one might mark the start of the competition for bulk bandwidth. All these people have fibre, but still use the competitive mentality. I know for a fact the MTNs and GLOs who have fibre coverage are very price-unfriendly with leasing circuits to the Starcomms and Multilinks of the industry, in order to stifle them. So they have to stay with the satellite people like gateway, who obviously charge them quite high too cos its satellite.

paddy_lo:

Your internet access up to now is dependent on wireless because there has been no submarine cables until now. . .

now the cable is there. . . .

I expect Nigerians to start switching to DSL through a home landline. . which is more stable and cheaper

The wireless being referred to is metro-networks. The submarine cable terminates at a landing point from where network operators take over. How they get the data to you is based on the infrastructure they already have or are willing to roll out.
Phones / Re: Main One Cable Goes Live In Lagos by buffox: 1:31pm On Jul 02, 2010
hercules07:

This is not going to crash any price, the problem we have with internet access is distribution and none peering of the existing providers. Our distribution system is based on wireless system, frequency spectrum is not cheap and not readily available, until we have a wired system, broadband internet access might be a mirage

^^Spot on! The problem is with the last mile distribution to the end users. We have done quite a commendable job to get trunk links to the internet highway, but we do not have any metro cable networks of any sort for this data to ride to the customers. Everyone needs some of wireless device at their premises. On the provider side, they need to roll out a network of wireless access points, another capital expenditure. All of these cost is spread over time on the bandwidth charge and passed to the customers!

So in earnest, the only people that can deliver any savings are a network like MTN who already have 3.5G network infrastructure on which their data can ride as well. Therefore, any savings on the trunk links to the internet can be passed on - but knowing the south african company, do not hold your breath just yet!
