PoliticsRe: Nigerian Army Officers Arrive Lagos Judicial Panel Venue, To Show Lekki Shooting by calberian: 12:29pm On Nov 14, 2020
techmo:
I believe this is different, State Governors are handling the panel of enquiries, and state Justice department and AG might prosecute the case further especially in States that want Federal Government compensation
Of course this is different. It is different in a worse way. Infact, the worst possible way. In the Obasanjo era, there was some latitude of freedom and nothing came out of the whole academic exercise.

In this dispensation, allegedly complicit entities are a part of the panel receiving complaints. Secondly, there are clear cases of intimidation of aggrieved parties who are supposed to observe and possibly react/give their unadulterated opinion of the process.

How can a governor who is being accused (through the use of proxies) of harassing (and possibly killing) people exercising their rights be the head of the panel which is investigating accusations levelled against him?

How else do you define conflict of interest?

So, I agree with you. This one is extremely different.

Maybe you should take another look at your piece and then look at the title again. You can do this 2 or 3 times. You just might notice something.

cool

Nigeria is slowly getting civilised, it might be slow, sometimes stagnant, but we are making progress

Judicial panel of enquiries is a step in the right direction

.
Panels only recommend actions. Implementation of the recommendations is purely at the discretion of the forces beyond Sanwo Olu’s power.

When they implement the recommendations of the Justice Chukwudife Oputa panel, maybe, just maybe I might start having a glimmer of hope in this panel.

To think that the country of origin of these geniuses is governed by the kind of people at the helm of affairs is mind-boggling.

It’s like trying to come to terms with a reality that the country Niger or maybe Chad is giving financial aid to the Swiss government to help the European country in their health and educational sectors.

PoliticsRe: Why The N1000 Note Needs To Be Scrapped by calberian: 10:55pm On Nov 12, 2020
thebosstrevor1:
Not always true.

A country experiencing high levels of inflation introduces higher denominations or re-denominates in order to meet the higher demand for currency.

Many products are not round figures especially when you buy them from the wholesalers
“ . . . especially when you buy from wholesalers”. Well, you might want to know that over 70% of Nigerians in Nigeria live on less than a dollar a day and a higher proportion have less than N500k in their bank accounts so most Nigerians won’t be dealing regularly with wholesalers anytime soon.

PoliticsRe: SERAP’s truckload of cases against the FG by calberian: 5:05pm On Nov 06, 2020
At the risk of overstating the obvious, the FG should endeavour to set the right precedents so as to have moral grounds to prosecute others. The FG should not be seen, implicated, perceived or so much as suggested as being the party in disregard of the laws of the society it has sworn to and was employed to serve. There’s probably no better recipe for anarchy.

Anyways, their stellar CVs show that they’re mostly well bred, well fed, well read and well wed so they’re not hungry or lacking in the basics which is what governance is about.
PoliticsRe: Army: We Won’t Disclose Identity Of Personnel Deployed To Lekki Tollgate by calberian: 4:51pm On Nov 01, 2020
SmartyPants:
Seems you didn't follow the news well then.

On that particular day so many attacks had already taken place around Lagos, and these are available in the public domain.
The fact of the matter is this:

The army claims that they were called upon to restore order and, more importantly manage the curfew (italicised emphasis mine) but I posit that the reverse was the case:

The curfew was introduced to manage the impending advent of a military exercise at lekki which, believe what you may, was admittedly beyond the powers of the governor.

This is so because, if the main instruction was to restore and maintain order, they’d have been deployed to locations where incidents of violence from civil unrest had been recorded. There’s no need to list them.

The Lekki toll gate never recorded any such incidence until the evening of Tuesday, October 20, 2020. The objective at Lekki could not have been to restore order because no such intervention was needed. Protesting at the toll gate or any other public location was fully within the ambits of the rights of the protesters so there were no grounds for such a move. Nothing was scratched, let alone damaged at that toll gate. Infact, there seemed to be a team saddled with the responsibility of managing the integrity of the toll plaza and evidently, their performance was stellar. So, application of such level of force at that place however, was most befuddling.

I’ll just say this to whom it may concern:
You can fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all of the time however, you can NEVER fool all of the people all of the time.

Absolutely!

The funny thing is, there’s usually a safe, locally available and usually organic alternative but if inferiority complex doesn’t discourage Nigerians, high retail cost will do the job.
