Politics › Re: Again, CBN Raises Import Duty Rate By Another 4.4% In 24 Hours by Calitoscassius(m):
DeLaRue:
You think so, but that's not the reality.

There is a pain point at which demand for many imported goods will fall fast. People will simply start buying less and less of them. Whether that pain point is at N1500, N1800, or N2000 to a dollar, I don't know.

But the CBN will have the data. They know. If N1500 doesn't stiffle imports to the level they want, I suspect the CBN will not mind seeing naira close to N2,000 to a dollar.

In some ways, it is to the credit of Mr Tinubu's administration that it is willing to follow this extremely tough path to redirect the economy from import-dependence to greater local production. For a politician facing election in just over 3 years to follow a path that may not show positive results for a few years, is truly brave.

The Nigerian economy was heading for the rocks after over 40 years of mismanagement. Tough decisions are needed to correct long term over dependence on imports.

That naira/dollar pain point is the point at which local production of certain goods starts becoming more viable than importing the same goods. This should translate to us producing more of what we need locally. This will lead to more job creation, less pressure on the naira, and a stronger, more balanced economy in the long term.

But this approach comes with a lot of economic pain initially, as the country is witnessing now.

That's the theory o.

Whether things happen in practice like I stated above is a different matter, because Nigeria's situation often defy economic theory.
This sounds like hocus pocus, living in kukoo land. grin who will produce these local products? And what local products can Naigeeria produce? The dumb government wants to force citizens to purchase local products that are not available. grin grin

And, Soludo cannot stop the funeral trade, I don't think anyone can, because their services are very much needed but there should be controls/regulations etc as with every trade.
It doesn't matter! So funerals are wrong? Would you not want a funeral for yourself when you die? grin would you refuse a coffin makers money if he comes to your shop to purchase goods? What about shop who sells the coffin making materials? Should they be banned too? grin

Left for me, each community should have a local coffin maker who will make a coffin once death occurs not this open displaying of coffins. The day l passed Regina celi road I had an eery feeling seeing a big plaza being used for coffin sales alone. Quite disgusting
Feelings right? grin grin everything that hurts your feelings should be banned right? Did you know that your business or shop might be making other people feel the way you feel about coffins? Should your shop be banned? I don't know why some people are afraid of coffins, it is just a piece furniture, what is the difference between a coffin and a chair made outta woods? I don't feel the same way you feel when you see coffins, you and I are not the same. I don't even notice the display of coffins. Besides, it doesn't bother me. Being in denial of death would not stop people from dying.

You think banning the display of coffins will stop death? cheesy cheesy

Coffin making is just a trade just like every other trade, Cars killpeople daily in Naigeeria should the display of cars be banned? What about the shops that sells coffin making materials should they be banned? Would you refuse a coffin maker's money if he comes to purchase his needs from your shop? I bet you wouldn't. cheesy

Well... good thing! It isn't up to you to decide, you would have banned everything that hurts your FEELINGS.

People do not know it but when you do a flamboyant burial, it immediately puts psychological pressure on others who are your peers to want to match it or even do better, irrespective of whether your resources can even offset the cost.

The Nigerian society is structured in a way that coerces one to want to do just about anything to keep the pace with others. It's the major reason youths resort to crime and unwholesome methods just to make money these days.
You are absolutely correct!

You would find also that people celebrate wealth and wealthy people (nothing wrong with that if the wealth are genuinely acquired) rather in Naigeeria hence the obsession to aquire vast wealth by Anambra youths especially, this practise of spraying cash on people during events should be banned also it is a ridiculous practise. It senseless, today Mark Zukerberg is worth nearly $800 billion but he would never be seen spraying cash during events.

I think families should also question their youths how they aquired their wealths rather than sing praises of them. I remember when i was 12 i came home with a bicycle my father querried where it came from saying he didn't remember purchasing the bike for me, parents should do this often in Anambra especially.

A coffin market is a fine idea. Everyone who fabricates and sells them can have their work sheds and sales shops there. Then you who needs to bury a loved one will know there's a fixed market for it and take yourself there. We need to start deviating from the old ways of doing things.
Yes.

Hopefully, these things takes time.

Whether it's my money or not, the craze and frenzy that accompanies burials down South is totally stupendous and uncalled for. I assure you, this move won't end with Soludo. In the not too distant future, other governors and HOAs will follow suit.

It's time we do away with archaic and unnecessary practices.
You are right again, just because some people can afford to have flambouyant funeral events doesn't mean they have the right to inconvieniece or disrupt other citizens lives with their events.

But in Nageeria as it appears if you are wealthy you are free to do whatever da hell you want in any community.

I believe also as you rightly asserted, that other state may copy from Soludo's ideas.

It's even preferable for funeral homes to hawk their wares and services through television Ads. Not only is it an income spinner for the media houses concerned, it is a classy approach as opposed to sampling coffins by the roadside like corn and pear.

Well, death certificates are not free in Nigeria and they equally serve the same purpose. And with what Soludo has done by requesting that burials be documented, a family will find it easier getting a death certificate in the eventual run because you must have already documented the burial process earlier. All that's to be done in that case is a reconciliation of records, instead of you struggling to remember and present dates and details of when such death and burial occurred.
Yes, you are right, however, coffin making is a more than 100 years old artisan business, i am sure before this generation coffins were displayed openly in shops, if you have watched movies like cow boys and Indians, or D jango you d see cowboys displaying and making coffins openly in the streets.

It is just that some part of the developed world has moved on from such business practises. Year ago meat/chicken were displayed openly in shops in England but today meat are sold in packs in supermarkets.

But Naigeria or Anambra have not quite go to the level of such developement.

Someone on here suggested a coffin market/area similar to spare parts, tyre or electronic market and i agree to that.

Apart from the discomfort it brings, it is aesthetically inappropriate for people to display goods by roadsides, whether fruits, vegetables, on-the-spot consumables or even coffins. Any decent metropolis shouldn't have to be burdened with ugly sights as such.

Have you ever heard of the "death certificate"?
I agree. It is apauling, i always find it very difficult trying to navigate my way driving along Nkpor/Obosi or Enugu/Onitsha old road as a result of good and wares displayed along the roadsides, some one suggested a special coffin markets/areas similar to spare parts market, electronic or tyre market i think that d be a very good idea

Yes, i have, we register deaths here in England and it is free, the registeration of death are ussually for future and historical references and to mornitor populations.

Talk about discomfort, here in England funeral companies advertise their businesses atleast every 20 minutes on Televisions.

I support the ban on public displays of caskets. Casket sale is a business like other businesses out there. People who indulge in them should rent shops or warehouses where they can arrange their caskets and people can walk in for purchase. It is very discomforting to drive along roads and be seeing different shapes and colours of coffins by the roadsides. Get a shop, arrange your coffins within and put a signpost outside.

As for the burial registration of 1,500 naira, I don't see how that's a problem. If you can spend millions burying a loved one, what's a thousand five to document the burial of your loved one with the relevant government agency?
It wouldn't be fair banning the display of coffins just because it feels discomforting grin death is what every human will experience eventually, as i ve asserted earlier every other businesses are allowed to display their wares, every time i drive along Anambra major streets people are blocking the side roads with their wares, from bread sellers, fruit sellers, pure water, even roasting chicken almost in the middle of the road grin these are very hazzardous to road users and the environment.

Yes. Wealthy people obviously can afford it, but what about the poor who may be struggling financially with the burial of their dead family members, and they are billed 1500 for registrations?

We cannot just ban the display of everything we feel are discomforting

Good one, it is not aesthetic pleasing to see casket traders and builders lining across all roads seeking for the living to sell their product to.

However, I think the right thing to do is to open a designated area/market for all funeral trades.
But is is absolutely fine for canopy renters, chair and table renters, food and wine for funerals , MCs and music providers at funerals to display their wares. Right? It isn't the fault of coffin makers that people die, besides, it wouldn't stop people from dying banning coffin makers.

Yes. I agree with area/market, very good idea ,but Soludo just want a more than 100 years old artisan business like coffin making to end. Is he afraid to die or what? cheesy

And two months are not enough to put things in place for a burial?

Do you want to build an airport for the dead body? All these flamboyant burial traditions we have down South are just tantamount to wastage of scarce resources. Is it that the corpses buried in 24 hours in the North don't rest in peace?

If I someday get involved in politics and attain a significant position at the state or federal level, I'll put an outright ban on the burial traditions down South. It's stupid and unnecessary.
As much as i agree with you on the unnercerssary waste of money on burials and the 2 months storing of corpses. Soludo is also wrong for tyring to charge 1500 to register deaths and wrong on banning the display of coffins by coffin makers. It isn't their faults people die.

There are so many businesses who supply their commodities to burial ceremonies, from chairs, tables, musics, food, wine to canopies. Why did he not ban them too? Soludo is clueless on this one.

[sub]

Good. But APAMS just left the group chat. I think makers and sellers of caskets should be allowed to display their goods. Should their showrooms now be hidden?

[sub][/sub] Anambra men will use this one to flex money and political muscles. They will obtain the permission and block road to show they are connected. This is a new cash out update for local government authorities.
Absolutely! And the registration of death for 1500 is also ridiculous, dead people families will eventually hide and abandon corpses of their dead family members let it rot or even dispose them unhygienically within their communities.

The coffin makers should have the right to display their coffins on sale. It isn't their faults people die.

For some reason they are demonising coffin makers while every other businesses are allowed to display their wares. What about the caterers, who make funeral foods, or ther canopy people. The musicians. The MCs, the chairs and table renting businesses, the wine and beer suppliers to funerals? This is an achaic law. Besides, Soludo wants to make money from dead corpese.
