Fatigue is just one of many negative consequences of sleep deprivation An estimated 50-70 million adults in the world have some type of sleep or wakefulness disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With a multitude of adverse health effects, insufficient shut-eye is an important public health concern. But the quantity is not all that matters. You can be in bed for 15 hours, but if you wake up every 20 minutes, you won’t be rested at all. This would be considered less sleep than someone who laid in bed undisturbed for six hours. 1 - HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE Less sleep leads to higher blood pressure because of the body is working harder to produce cortisol, also known as the “stress hormone.” As your insulin level rises, your blood pressure rises. A study has shown that shorter sleep actually worsens hypertension. Research has indicated that people with hypertension suffer the effects of even one night without enough shuteye hours. 2 - WEIGHT GAIN Sleep deprivation affects the brain in a way that makes you want to eat more and not process food efficiently. It sparks a vicious cycle where you are left feeling tired, slowing your metabolism and playing tricks with your hormones. Research has shown a connection between short sleep duration and elevated levels of ghrelin, which is commonly known as the “hunger hormone.” Food choices are significantly associated with sleep duration, studies show. Short sleepers tend to drink less water and eat fewer fruits and vegetables than people who have normal and consistent sleep patterns. 3 - HARDER TO LEARN Lack of sleep harms cognitive function. Thinking becomes harder as research has shown. A sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention optimally, and therefore, cannot learn efficiently because receiving new information becomes more difficult. Without adequate sleep and rest, over-worked neurons can no longer function to coordinate information properly, leading to the loss of ability to access previously learned information, according to studies. 4 - WEAKER IMMUNE SYSTEM Sleep is crucial to prevent the cold, flu and other infections, doctors say. Past Sleep in America polls conducted by the National Sleep Foundation indicate that children and the elderly, identified as high-risk populations and first in line for the flu vaccine, are often sleep-deprived. You need restorative sleep to get the body back into disease-fighting shape, according to studies. 5 - GETTING OLDER FASTER The skin has its own circadian rhythm, which controls cell growth and renewal of multiple physiological systems. A study found that adults who didn’t get enough sleep were much more likely to be unhappy with the way they look because they noticed more wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. Sleep deprived women show signs of premature aging and a decrease in their skin’s ability to recover after sun exposure, another study showed. 6 - HEART PROBLEMS Coronary heart disease and stroke risks increase when we aren’t sleeping, research has indicated. Even with short term sleep deprivation blood pressure, inflammation, autonomic tone and hormones all are altered in a direction that is recognized to contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease, most importantly, atherosclerosis, according to a study. This is the build-up of fats and cholesterol on the artery walls. 7 - POOR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE Why do you think athletes stress the importance of going to bed early? You’ll be fine if you don’t get enough shuteye one night, but chronic sleep deprivation can hinder your overall athletic performance in the long-term. The longer period of time without you getting enough rest, the more your reflexive time will decrease. Even snooze time will improve performance, a study shows. Sleep deprivation also decreases the production of glycogen which is stored for energy use during exercise. 8 - YOU ARE EASILY ANNOYED Mood swings are not uncommon for people who don’t sleep enough on regular basis. Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to anxiety disorders. A study found that subjects who were limited to only 4.5 hours of sleep a night for one week reported feeling more stressed, angry, sad, and mentally exhausted. When the participants resumed normal sleep, they reported a significant improvement in mood. 9 - INCREASE RISK OF DIABETES If you’re on little sleep, the fat cells’ ability to react properly to insulin (the hormone that regulates energy storage) decreases by 30 percent. Such chronic disruption could cause weight gain, type 2 diabetes and other health problems, according to a study. 10 - NO S3X DRIVE S*x hormones drop as much as 15 percent in men who have slept fewer than five hours, according to research. Sleep apnea has also been linked to lower levels of testosterone, according to studies. This is due to the fact that lack of sleep leads to people lacking energy. Separate research found that every extra hour of sleep made women 14 percent more likely to engage in sexual activity. Microsoft appears to be planning to introduce a new Windows 10 feature in a future update that will automatically lock a user’s device as soon as it detects they’re no longer present. Evidence of the new feature was first spotted in build 15002 by users enrolled in the Windows Insiders program which is used to test features before rolling them out to the general user. Named, Dynamic Lock, the feature is present in the Sign-in options section of Settings and is described as, “Allow Windows to detect when you’re away and automatically lock the device.” Dynamic Lock appears just above the Windows Hello options which suggests that the option could use a Windows 10 device’s camera to visually confirm a user’s presence. WindowsCentral also reports that their sources say that the feature is being referred to internally at Microsoft as “Windows Goodbye” which further suggests a camera connection. Windows 10, as well as older versions of Windows, has had auto-sleep and shutdown options for a while now so this isn’t exactly a new concept. More information on Dynamic Lock will naturally be announced as its public launch nears. Would you ever use this setting? Do you even use Windows Hello? Let us know in the comments below. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, yesterday in Abuja formally launched the Federal Government of Nigeria Information App (FGN IAPP), saying government would not allow the media space to be dominated by those who are daily working to discredit it (the government) and obfuscate its achievements. The Minister, who stated this during the launching of the App in Abuja, also said “in addition to using the conventional and the Social Media, the government has introduced the Town Hall Meeting for Cabinet Ministers to interact directly with a cross-section of Nigerians in a no-holds-barred session.” “We realised early on that in order to get undiluted and factual information directly to the people, we will have to do things differently. This is because those who are opposed to this Administration’s Change Agenda, including the corrupt elements in our society who have chosen to fight the government with their ill-gotten wealth, have taken it upon themselves to distort our messages and obfuscate our activities to give the impression that the government is not doing anything. “Honourable Ministers, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, we must not allow those the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti referred to as ‘”Opposite People” to stifle the progress that this Administration has made. We must not leave the public space for naysayers.” He said contrary to its portrayal in certain circles, the federal government is making sure and steady progress. On his part, the App Developer, Mr. Olawale Wale-Falope, said the “App is a one-stop shop where Nigerians can get authentic information on all the three arms of government in real-time.” Other dignitaries at the launch included the Minister of Niger Delta, Pastor Usani Uguru; Minister of State for Environment, Malam Ibrahim Usman Jibril, and his counterpart in the Health Ministry, Mr. Osagie Ehanire. Breakdancing is moving from the streets to the Olympics... The spinning, twisting style of street dance is one of three new sports added to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, the International Olympic Committee said this week. Karate and sport climbing are the other two. The IOC periodically adds new sports. The organization said it is also trying to attract more interest from youth and sees breakdancing as a perfect vehicle, "a unique sport that embodies music and expression through movement to music." This is how it will work: Twelve male and 12 female dancers, ages 16-18, will compete over two days. Competition will be broken down into three events -- men's, women's and mixed-team -- with dancers facing off in a battle format that will be judged and scored. The move attracted attention on social media. Chaz Bonnar, a videographer and dancer from Scotland, tweeted: "Big uproar at the moment about having #Breaking as part of the Youth Olympic Games! #hiphop The IOC's decision is a clear sign that breakdancing -- and hip-hop culture at large -- continues to go global. Breakdancing originated in the 1970s among Latino and African-American inner-city youth in New York City. It grew as rap and hip-hop music became more popular. In fact, breakdancing is considered one of the four pillars of hip-hop culture, along with rap, DJing and graffiti. Breakdancing has since spread around the world and is now now a famous pastime in the UK, Middle East, Korea, South Africa and beyond. Karate and sport climbing were added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games program at the IOC meeting four months ago in Rio de Janeiro, Team USA reported. Breakdancing is new to Olympic competition. Gender equality is a key feature of the additions. "Dance sport will be competed as men's, women's and mixed team breakdancing in a battle format," Team USA said. "Kumite, a combat form of karate, will feature three events per gender, while the three climbing disciplines -- lead, bouldering and speed -- will be staged in a combined event for both men and women." Look for all this to happen October 1-18 at the Youth Olympic Games. SOURCE: http://www.fullgist.com.ng/2016/12/breakdancing-added-to-olympic-games-for.html
