PhonesDespite Whatsapp End-to-end Encryption, Your Whatsapp Can Still Be Hacked (video by callydon(op): 11:44am On Mar 16, 2017
WHEN WHATSAPP SWITCHED on end-to-end encryption for its billion-plus users last year, the move heralded a new era for messaging apps, one where foiling virtually all eavesdropping represents the new security standard.

But a pair of new attacks on the web versions of those “secure” messengers shows how just a few lines of insecure code can undermine even the most airtight encryption—particularly when they’re running in your browser.
On Wednesday, Israeli security firm Check Point revealed a new technique that the company says
could bypass WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, by hiding HTML code in a seemingly innocuous image. If a user clicks on it while using the web version of the app, the code runs in the victim’s browser, gaining full access not only to the target’s messages, but to any shared photos and videos, as well as their contact list. Check Point also revealed a similar attack on the web version of Telegram—another app that advertises end-to-end encryption—that the researchers say can hide malicious code in a video that a user opens in a new tab.

Weaker On the Web

While both companies patched the bugs with quick updates, the vulnerability may have left millions of users open to crypto-circumventing spies. And security researchers say the attacks point to inherent vulnerabilities in the web versions of any secure messenger. When privacy counts, the smartphone is safer ground.
“Unfortunately, this does highlight a weakness specific to web applications,” says Nadim Kobeissi, the founder of the applied cryptography consultancy Symbolic Software. Kobeissi has in the past lauded the ease of use of web-based crypto apps. But he concedes that Check Point’s findings are a strong example of why those web apps are prone to forms of attack that mobile apps aren’t. “It’s kind of heartbreaking to have to say this, but if you’re someone in a precarious situation and you care about your security, I’d recommend you use WhatsApp on an iPhone,” he says.
Check Point’s attacks take advantage of flaws in how the two apps perform “input validation,” the process that ensures an image or video is the type of file it appears to be rather than a piece of code that would run potentially dangerous commands in the victim’s browser. “Every web application, whether it’s Facebook or a bank application, has to make sure that anything you enter as an input or that you upload is the kind of file type they’re permitting,” says Oded Vanunu, a security researcher at Check Point. “Once you manage to bypass that validation, it’s game over. The browser will run whatever you give it.”
It’s a form of attack to which web apps are particularly vulnerable, argues Kobeissi. He points out that in a web browser, the components responsible for rendering different types of data—whether an image, video, or executable commands—are less distinct and isolated than they are in a typical operating system. And the web-based language Javascript allows so-called “just-in-time” compiling of new code, essentially the ability to receive new data that adds or even overwrites functionality in an app, whereas mobile or desktop apps have to be compiled before installation. “That’s why these vulnerabilities work, and why they highlight a particular weakness in web apps,” Kobeissi says.

Special Cases

That doesn’t mean that web-based bugs like the one Check Point discovered are an everyday occurrence. Check Point’s Vanunu and Kobeissi both argue that the WhatsApp vulnerability Check Point found represents a rare and uniquely serious flaw. “It’s not a new class of attack,” notes Kobeissi. “But this is an impressive and clever one.”
WhatsApp noted in a statement that it had addressed the flaw Check Point discovered in less than a day from when the company was notified. It nonetheless urged users to restart their browsers to make sure they’re protected. Telegram offered more resistance to Check Point’s findings, countering that the attack only works when a victim clicks on a video that’s already playing in Chrome and opens it in a new tab. “As you can see, the attack against Telegram required very unusual user interaction to succeed,” writes Telegram spokesperson Markus Ra. Ra called Telegram’s security issue “several orders of magnitude less severe” than WhatsApp’s.
But security researchers following the news argue it makes a broader point about the relative fragility of browser-based encrypted apps compared with those running on traditional operating systems. “Folks, especially those who work in security sensitive professions…Don’t use browser versions” of end-to-end encrypted messengers, tweeted Zeynep Tufekci, a privacy- and surveillance-focused professor of information and library science at the University of North Carolina. “Encrypted phone apps are for your phone.”
For those who see encrypted messaging as a mere privacy bonus, in other words, it’s not necessarily time to swear off web-based messaging apps. But for those who need the end-to-end encryption those apps offer, the extra security is worth waiting until you’re back on mobile.

Romance5 Things To Never Post About Your Relationship On Social Media by callydon(op): 8:04am On Mar 16, 2017
We are all familiar with social media in this 21st century where almost everyone is a digital/tech nomad or geek. However, due to its unhindered accessibility to all, many people abuse it.

And unlike in the past where social media is not on the list of causes of breakups, today it is arguably on top of the list. This is why it is essential for you to be conscious of what you post on social media in order to save yourself from potential relationship headaches. Here we with you 5 of these things. You may think it is harmless, but it can result in serious consequences.

Anything personal about your partner, without his or her permission
You know that your post is an important expose about your relationship, but you still went ahead to share it. Your partner will not feel good. This said, if you can’t control your cravings, you can ask your partner to be for permission before you post it. It’s safer this way.
Relationship Issues
If you and your partner get into a fight, you may want to rant to your Facebook fans about how much pain you are going through, if you do that, you are reducing your chances of resolving the issues. Constantly posting your relationship problems is information strangers don't need to know. Don’t be like Tiwa Savage.
Your nude pictures
No matter how much you love your body, the whole world doesn't need to see it. Always keep your nudes to yourself. Your partner will be embarrassed if others see sensitive parts of your body which are meant to be private.
Your breakup
Spare everyone the details of your breakup. If you and your partner break up, the emotional mess is enough to clean up without having to field comments and advice from the relationship advisors. Keep it simple. If it's over, it's over. No need to broadcast it to the world which many of us do these days.
Personal conversations
Don’t post personal conversations, not only is it wrong but it's rude. Even if someone messages you saying something nasty about them, don't put them on the hot seat. You should be matured enough to ignore, delete it and move on.

Share this post with your friends so they'll also know.

EducationUI ASUU To Commence Warning Strike On Friday by callydon(op): 8:51pm On Mar 08, 2017
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Ibadan Chapter, says it is awaiting the approval of its national body to embark on a one-week warning strike.

The union, at an emergency meeting presided over by its Chairman, Dr Deji Omole, on Wednesday in Ibadan, threatened to proceed on an indefinite strike to protest illegal pension deductions and shortfall of salaries.

Omole gave the management up to March 10, to address the issues or face an indefinite strike.

ASUU asked the Governing Council to mandate the Vice-Chancellor to present to the staff unions the budget, detailing the personnel cost, capital and recurrent expenditures as presented to the university Senate.

According to the union, all joint unions of the institution are convinced that pensions deductions hitherto are illegal, the university must be refunded since 2004.

“While ASUU awaits the approval of the national body of the union to proceed on its strike, its Non Academic Staff counterparts have also resolved to proceed on an indefinite strike unless the issues are resolved favourably.

“Failure to implement all the items stated above by Friday, the staff unions in the university, arising from the warning strike earlier issued in August, 2016, will embark on an indefinite strike,” Omole said.

PoliticsOnnoghen To Be Sworn In As CJN Today By Osinbajo by callydon(op): 8:24am On Mar 07, 2017
Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, will today administer the oath of office on the newly-confirmed Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen in substantive capacity.

Onnoghen had been sworn in as Acting CJN on November 10 last year by President Muhammadu Buhari when the then CJN, Muhammad Mahmud, retired on attaining the age of 70.

Osinbajo, who will perform the swearing-in ceremony at the Council Chamber of Aso Rock Villa, may also confer on the new CJN the National Honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the
Niger (CGON) as has been customarily done to his recent predecessors.

Apprehension and intrigues had trailed his confirmation as substantive CJN following Buhari’s reluctance to immediately forward his name to the Senate for statutory screening and confirmation.
The maximum three-month acting tenure of Onnoghen was on the verge of expiry when Osinbajo, in the absence of Buhari, nominated him for confirmation by the legislature.

This paved way for him to continue in office beyond the three months until the Senate confirmed him last Wednesday.

Buhari has been on medical vacation over an undisclosed ailment since January 19, 2017.

PhonesWhatsapp Update - How To Use Whatsapp's New Status Feature by callydon(op): 1:34pm On Feb 25, 2017
WhatsApp rolled out a Snapchat-story like status message feature earlier this week and, with this, almost all the entities owned by Facebook have incorporated features inspired by the rival image messaging and multimedia mobile application. Here is a quick guide on how to use WhatsApp status.

Once your app is updated to the latest version, you will see a Status tab on the top bar. Just as in Snapchat, you'll first see your own updates in the bar. Below that, you can see your friends' new updates and viewed updates.

You can add a status update by clicking the new update button on the bottom right corner which opens the camera. At the bottom, you will find all your recent photos, videos and GIFs in a strip as well. So you can either click a photo or hold for video or add an existing item.

Once added, you can tap on the status tab and see how many people have viewed your status, just as in Instagram. There are options to delete or forward the status as well.

Additionally, when you are viewing your friends' updates you can swipe up and reply to them as well. The functionality and execution are similar to Instagram.

WhatsApp has introduced privacy settings as well to control who can see your status. If you click on the three-dot menu on the top right, you'll see an option called Status Privacy. Under this menu you can choose all, 'my contacts except', or 'only share with' options to control status sharing.

Do bear in mind that all these updates will last for only 24 hours and disappear after that.

Facebook was once rumored to have tried to acquire Snapchat but the deal didn't go through. It almost looks like that the social-networking giant is trying to kill the fast growing startup by implementing similar functionalities in the apps it owns. First, it introduced Instagram stories which has grown to 100 million daily users in just two months.

Now, by introducing WhatsApp status, Facebook wants you to tell more stories to almost all of your contacts. The messaging app has over a billion users worldwide and so, right away, this new feature will have a larger audience than Snapchat for every post.

greatgod2012:
There is no one who do not like to get enough hours of sleep, but this life get as e be, especially this Nigeria. There are so many circumstances that can keep one awake even when there's a desire to sleep........ ranging from insecurity to economic downtown that is affecting virtually every business and entrepreneurs!

Apart from the above, there's a mystery on how human mind works......... especially in this country, if you're very rich, you'll have constant sleepless nights due to fear of robbery, attacks, business risks/losses, fear of returning poor, etc.

If you're poor, that's even worse, so many sleepless nights thinking about how to be successful, and so on.

I can bet it that, it's only a few Nigerians that can boast of enough medically approved hours of sleep, because of so many factors.

Waking up earlier than recommended to meet up with office work.

Keeping late at night due to heavy traffic problems

Waking up in the middle of the night to iron clothes since power is not usually available during the day time.

And so many other factors.

No wonder so many Nigerians are suffering from both mental and heart problems.

It is well!
Nice one
