salford1: I’ll chip in and say programming is definitely not for everyone , you have to be able to think of problems in a very unusual way But I’ll always encourage everyone to at least give it a shot . Reason being I started out in a non IT degree , took a programming course by chance , found it pretty intuitive and I knew then I was gonna switch degrees . No harm in trying it and if it’s not for you , you lose nothing Also no one should feel discouraged learning syntax , it’s probably the easiest part . With any programming language , I learn the basics in a few days and the rest you just check the docs . Most things are already done for you , wanna Sort elements , there’s a method , wanna find max or min that’s a simple method call , you just need to check the docs . If you can figure out how to solve the problem , translating to code is just a matter of searching stackoverflow.com 4 Likes 1 Share |

TheCongo2: To add to what’s already been said , nowadays there is a lot of emphasis on learning “programming” . I believe a better approach is looking at learning the Software Development cycle which typically involves Requirements Gathering (basically what you expect from what you’re building) -> Analysis (UML class diagrams, Sequence Diagrams , User Stories/ Use Cases) > Implementing/ developing using a technology stack depending on what is being built > Testing ( unit testing / integration testing etc > Deployment) Once you start looking at software problems in terms of the above , you start producing software that not only works but is well structured because at the end of the day it’s not too hard making software that does xyz but employers are very interested in things like efficiency, robustness , scalability and performance which your software will lack without following that sequence . For each of those steps , you can research to learn what it involves in terms of Programming languages , Libraries or Frameworks. 7 Likes 4 Shares |

Omonoba1981: To be honest if I were you , I’d try to do GCE or something and pass English and then apply for a 4 year program . Most times so long as you’re 17-19 and applying for a Permit for a bachelors with funding from parents you’ll be approved In my opinion doing ESL is a waste of money |

hustla: The answer my friend is a big bold yes . A COOP program gives you tremendous advantages. 1. Exposure to the canadian work culture with “training wheels” . 2. Valuable experience for your resume 3. Familiarity with Canadian style interviews Regarding permanent residency: Length of program has no direct impact but most people use the canadian experience class stream which allows people to apply for PR after working for 1 year minimum . This work experience must be in canada and the Post Graduate work permit provides the easiest way to get this experience . Post Grad work permit is issued based on length of program ; 1yr program = 1yr work permit , 2yrs+ program = 3years work permit . Now length of program could be beneficial for citizenship , every day spent in canada as a non permanent resident e.g student / worker counts as a half day BUT you need 3 years in total in canada to qualify for citizenship and 2 of those 3 years must be as a Permanent Resident Hope this answers your question bud 1 Like |

Wanted to add my 2cents on this racism issue . I’ve lived in Canada for close to 7years and in three different cities . Are there individuals who are racist ? Absolutely. But the reality is they’re very irrelevant, sure you may have someone on the bus make a rude comment (although this has never happened to me) but really does that stop you getting a job or earning a living ? The answer is no My advice is come here with an open mind. Its one of the biggest keys to success . Too often I see our naij folks come here and only stick to naij folks perhaps for fear of racism . This is the wrong approach , a lot of opportunities I’ve had some of which are life changing have come from networking with Non Nigerians and Non Africans .. and the funny thing on several occasions I’ve been asked why nigerians sometimes don’t like to interact and socialize with non nigerians .. you can imagine we are complaining of racism and yet we are the ones refusing to interact with other people In fact I know people whose first interaction with a non nigerian is at a job interview and of course they mess up . people need to realize when employers mention communication skills it’s really not just whether you can speak English , it’s also does this person key in on certain jokes and how social will this person be if hired. To buttress this point , my very first internship I had the typical nigerian mentality of go to work , work hard and mind my business . At the end of the internship , my boss had to do an evaluation , he was full of praise BUT the only area of improvement he noted was “keeping to myself / not socializing enough “ .He was the one who told me here in canada you need to open minded and social because promotions and all aren’t necessarily based on who works the hardest but rather who is liked the most . I know I digress a bit from racism but point being let’s all be open minded 46 Likes 3 Shares |

Saintp: You can definitely still get a job as a C# programmer but for every 10 postings , only about 2 mention C#. The point is as a programmer / dev you shouldn’t care too much about any specific language . Almost every company uses a different tech stack so you need to be willing to switch it up , all you need is solid grasp of the fundamentals. in fact in a lot of interviews for the technical challenge they usually give you the option to code in any language you like. Unless the position is like Java developer or Javascript developer then they limit you to that 2 Likes |

simiolu1: Ah gotcha . I don’t have too much xp with remote jobs but I know there’s a couple sites where you can register as a freelance programmer and charge people hourly for projects such as a “Simple” Task Management system or even better there’s a ton of students looking for people willing to do their programming assignments for them . you could get 100bucks/ assignment , pretty sure that’s the rate . Yeah definitely work on updating linkedIn and in our career personal projects are always a big plus . Try to add Continous Integration to whatever you build , it’s another in demand skill ( Travis CI , Jenkins) 6 Likes 2 Shares |

simiolu1: Where do you live bro and what’s your major ? I see posting alerts for software / web developers in toronto almost daily . Ottawa isn’t as poppin but also has a good tech base in Kanata. A lot of the big companies are almost always hiring (Shopify , IBM, amazon but their interviews are tough ) I have glassdoor and I see lots of postings through that . Example attached How’s your linked In profile looking ? 2 Likes 1 Share

simiolu1: As someone who studies software eng here and has worked at a few tech companies , I’ll say programming is 50% interest and you’re good For most of the tech jobs Ive had , sure I had an overall familiarly with software concepts , principles and software patterns but the actual tech stack I always pick up on the job and at time of the interviews I didn’t know. So what i’m saying is if you’re new to it rather than dive straight to a language , understand the fundamental principles , design patterns , and architectures and learning a language or framework would be very easy. If anyone coming to canada will be looking for a software developer or designer or programmer job , I can let you know what the interview style for tech jobs are and what the interviewers generally want to hear . Also lastly the most in demand tech stack right now : Ecmascript 2016 (updated Javascript) , Node JS , React JS , Express , MongoDB, Angular JS , Python and Ruby .. my fellow tech bros and sis focus on these if you’re tryna pick up a new skill and you can be sure of at least 70k cad at least in ottawa and toronto 16 Likes 6 Shares |

GIFTY11: To be honest , this would depend on the relationship to your sponsor. A close family member like parent or sibling wouldn’t dent your application , if it’s a distant family member or friend irrespective of where they are that generates more scrutiny. Make sure you show as much as possible the sponsor is truly willing to pay for your expenses and not just a front for the purpose of securing a visa |

bosaniger: A Coop work permit is a spearate document from the Study Permit. You can apply for both simultaneously , the only extra documentation needed is a letter from the Schools coop office that the student is in a coop program and as such a coop work permit is required . Last I checked , it’s free to apply . Alternatively , your kid could apply for the coop work permit after receiving a study permit. Validity of coop work permit is same as Study permit 2 Likes |

femiart: Hey bro , most times relatives sponsoring is a tough sell, even tougher in this case if your uncle can only provide company statement of account . If he’ll be acting as the main sponsor, he should submit a personal account statement as well OR maybe take a few extra months to build up cash flow in your dad’s account ? Expantiate on what you mean by “cash flow isn’t good” ? lump sum deposits or ? |

lonelyhrt: Be careful with your consistency . Whatever you stated in your SOP for the first application is probably still available to them so as much possible maintain your first story . You were denied for trying to do a second undergrad ,so provide strong justification as to why as asked : maybe blame quality of education in 9j and that you feel you’re not fully equipped for a postgrad .. That is just a thought , another option is to get a postgrad acceptance at a school here that accepts 3rd , your new SOP could say you previously wanted a 2nd undergrad because due to your grade (which again you can blame quality of education in nigeria / strikes if you went to a fed school )you didn’t think you’d get admission but after further research you found XYZ uni . and then that way you can still stick to your love of chem story |

Thats the issue most likely. You didn't submit any statements showing liquid financial assets. As far as I've heard corporate accounts don't count for much even if theres 50million there unless your sponsor submits a personal account as well. My advice : resubmit with both personal account and company account. Maybe pay all the tuition completely if you can. Also , make sure there is steady cash flow into the personal account for the duration of the statement , no unexplained lump sum |

drdamy: Paragraph 2 Mentioning things like social and economic growth as well as standard of living kinda makes it look like you’re considering the country for permanent relocation . Maybe i’m being overly cautious but might be safer to change the paragraph to why Canada is a good country to study , cite quality of education / teaching e.t.c Second to Last Paragraph Second sentence is kind of hanging . “Found xyz institute is really the best place “. Best place to ? .. might be better to restructure the paragraph highlighting you’re aware of the challenges of the program and emphasizing your desire to work hard and succeed . |

Jpandjp1: In my opinion one issue that might look off is you said you already have an mba , are your pursuing a higher level than that ?(PhD?) .. cos otherwise it looks odd that you’re spending all that money to get another degree at the same level as what you have . At what stage did you create this EE profile ? |

mhoosah: To fill the gap You could say you took a break from school to refresh and do some travelling within nigeria and spent the time improving your skills by taking online courses in XYZ. If you did any kinda volunteering , you could also add that. There’s always the option to just straight up say you tried the Gmat in that timeframe |

Ivan12: Hey , as someone who also went through a pre uni program couple years ago , you look set but I agree with the person who said the info about your brothers is not necessary. As a general rule only add docs that are highly relevant as the more documents you have , the more documents they have to potentially verify and the longer your application could take . |
