You are correct. I took C++ in school as part of my course completion requirement. I scored above 85% in the course but I just didn't enjoy programming. I can't see myself building a career in that field. Programming is not easy or fun for many people.

I’ll chip in and say programming is definitely not for everyone , you have to be able to think of problems in a very unusual way But I’ll always encourage everyone to at least give it a shot . Reason being I started out in a non IT degree , took a programming course by chance , found it pretty intuitive and I knew then I was gonna switch degrees . No harm in trying it and if it’s not for you , you lose nothing
Also no one should feel discouraged learning syntax , it’s probably the easiest part . With any programming language , I learn the basics in a few days and the rest you just check the docs . Most things are already done for you , wanna Sort elements , there’s a method , wanna find max or min that’s a simple method call , you just need to check the docs .
If you can figure out how to solve the problem , translating to code is just a matter of searching stackoverflow.com

Thanks again bro.
Seems like there is so much to programming than just using c++.
At least you have given me some insight into the field.
Much appreciated.

To add to what’s already been said , nowadays there is a lot of emphasis on learning “programming” . I believe a better approach is looking at learning the Software Development cycle which typically involves Requirements Gathering (basically what you expect from what you’re building) -> Analysis (UML class diagrams, Sequence Diagrams , User Stories/ Use Cases) > Implementing/ developing using a technology stack depending on what is being built > Testing ( unit testing / integration testing etc > Deployment)

Once you start looking at software problems in terms of the above , you start producing software that not only works but is well structured because at the end of the day it’s not too hard making software that does xyz but employers are very interested in things like efficiency, robustness , scalability and performance which your software will lack without following that sequence .

For each of those steps , you can research to learn what it involves in terms of Programming languages , Libraries or Frameworks.

Do you have any sample letter/similar. The only issue I have right now is that my BSc admission is conditional pending if I complete ESL. So instead I plan using a certificate course I got admission at a polytechnic to study Telecom Networking.

I already paid 8000 dollar part of the tuition fees.

To be honest if I were you , I’d try to do GCE or something and pass English and then apply for a 4 year program . Most times so long as you’re 17-19 and applying for a Permit for a bachelors with funding from parents you’ll be approved

In my opinion doing ESL is a waste of money

Please everyone

Seneca College has 2 courses im interested in..

One is 2 years and the other is 3 years
They have almost the same curriculum and yearly fees but the 3 year course has Co-Op attached to it

My question is will the years used to complete study make any difference towards getting PR?

As for The Co-op option, will it help towards Canadian work experience later on? As I know Canada and Australian employees will always want someone who has a bit of Homegrown experience

Please advice

Thank you

The answer my friend is a big bold yes . A COOP program gives you tremendous advantages.
1. Exposure to the canadian work culture with “training wheels” .
2. Valuable experience for your resume
3. Familiarity with Canadian style interviews

Regarding permanent residency:
Length of program has no direct impact but most people use the canadian experience class stream which allows people to apply for PR after working for 1 year minimum . This work experience must be in canada and the Post Graduate work permit provides the easiest way to get this experience .
Post Grad work permit is issued based on length of program ; 1yr program = 1yr work permit , 2yrs+ program = 3years work permit .

Now length of program could be beneficial for citizenship , every day spent in canada as a non permanent resident e.g student / worker counts as a half day BUT you need 3 years in total in canada to qualify for citizenship and 2 of those 3 years must be as a Permanent Resident

Hope this answers your question bud

Wanted to add my 2cents on this racism issue . I’ve lived in Canada for close to 7years and in three different cities .

Are there individuals who are racist ? Absolutely. But the reality is they’re very irrelevant, sure you may have someone on the bus make a rude comment (although this has never happened to me) but really does that stop you getting a job or earning a living ? The answer is no

My advice is come here with an open mind. Its one of the biggest keys to success . Too often I see our naij folks come here and only stick to naij folks perhaps for fear of racism . This is the wrong approach , a lot of opportunities I’ve had some of which are life changing have come from networking with Non Nigerians and Non Africans .. and the funny thing on several occasions I’ve been asked why nigerians sometimes don’t like to interact and socialize with non nigerians .. you can imagine we are complaining of racism and yet we are the ones refusing to interact with other people

In fact I know people whose first interaction with a non nigerian is at a job interview and of course they mess up . people need to realize when employers mention communication skills it’s really not just whether you can speak English , it’s also does this person key in on certain jokes and how social will this person be if hired. To buttress this point , my very first internship I had the typical nigerian mentality of go to work , work hard and mind my business . At the end of the internship , my boss had to do an evaluation , he was full of praise BUT the only area of improvement he noted was “keeping to myself / not socializing enough “ .He was the one who told me here in canada you need to open minded and social because promotions and all aren’t necessarily based on who works the hardest but rather who is liked the most .

I know I digress a bit from racism but point being let’s all be open minded

What about C# programmers? Are they not in demand like ones you listed?

You can definitely still get a job as a C# programmer but for every 10 postings , only about 2 mention C#. The point is as a programmer / dev you shouldn’t care too much about any specific language . Almost every company uses a different tech stack so you need to be willing to switch it up , all you need is solid grasp of the fundamentals. in fact in a lot of interviews for the technical challenge they usually give you the option to code in any language you like. Unless the position is like Java developer or Javascript developer then they limit you to that

I know I need to do a lot about my LinkedIn profile. I used to be so interested in the Telcoms industry and I interned with one of the equipment manufacturers so my profile was built around that.

Now that I have switched to software development full time, I have not made changes to make that reflect on the page.

Moreso, I want my profile to really stand out not just writing about skills without any project(s) to show for it.

So I plan to build something using my preferred languages (Php and JS) and put it on Github/BitBucket. I have not decided what to build yet; I just know I want to build with React or Vue or both and I've not even started learning any of the two! More importantly, I would want to use both projects to hone my Git flow workflow skills.

So when I said I'm about to, I actually meant in like 2 months time. And whatever I'm looking for has to be remote!!! And yes, I'm in Nigeria

Ah gotcha . I don’t have too much xp with remote jobs but I know there’s a couple sites where you can register as a freelance programmer and charge people hourly for projects such as a “Simple” Task Management system or even better there’s a ton of students looking for people willing to do their programming assignments for them . you could get 100bucks/ assignment , pretty sure that’s the rate .

Yeah definitely work on updating linkedIn and in our career personal projects are always a big plus . Try to add Continous Integration to whatever you build , it’s another in demand skill ( Travis CI , Jenkins)

I quite appreciate your thoughts... I'm currently writing a curiculum for someone who wants to learn web development. He was surprised when he saw CS50 (Harvard's Intro to Computer Science) in there. He was puzzled. I also included the Fundamentals of Programming learning track by Lynda. Dude didn't understand why he has to learn all these first.

My point: most people just want to learn a programming language. Tell them to learn language independent principles first and they won't understand. But for those who learn those principles, picking up a language is like taking a walk in the park. And every web developer (at least those that follow the yearly StackOverflow survey) know that JavaScript is taking over.

I'm bout to start searching for them remote jobs or internships so if you get info on any, kindly give me a heads up. Thanks

Where do you live bro and what’s your major ? I see posting alerts for software / web developers in toronto almost daily . Ottawa isn’t as poppin but also has a good tech base in Kanata. A lot of the big companies are almost always hiring (Shopify , IBM, amazon but their interviews are tough )

I have glassdoor and I see lots of postings through that . Example attached

How’s your linked In profile looking ?

Believe me, programming takes time to master as there are so many things to learn. So if you're looking for a stress free something, please kindly look elsewhere.

For instance, let's say you want to develop Salesforce applications, you'll at least need to know what a MVC architecture is. To have a deep understanding of MVC, you'll need to learn at least a framework that implements MVC pattern for a backend language.

Below is a list of some backend languages and some of their frameworks
a. Python (Django, Flask, web2py)
b. Php. (Laravel, CakePhp, Phalcon)
c. Node.JS (Express)
d. Ruby (Ruby on Rails)
e. Java (Spring)

Can you learn a framework without learning the language it was based on? Yes!

Should you? No!

The advantage of learning a language then one of its many frameworks is that you will
have all the basics of programming covered, so porting to another language or framework of the same language would be a breeze.

Then no one tells an intending programmer how much they are going to need to know about databases before they start learning how to program. Then there's Version Control that you will almost never hear about until you start reading job descriptions and you'll start wondering how you never heard it before. But if you're intrigued by the prospects of it all, please take the jump and be ready for the time of your life!

N.B: I'm not trying to scare you; just telling you as it is... Good luck

As someone who studies software eng here and has worked at a few tech companies , I’ll say programming is 50% interest and you’re good

For most of the tech jobs Ive had , sure I had an overall familiarly with software concepts , principles and software patterns but the actual tech stack I always pick up on the job and at time of the interviews I didn’t know.

So what i’m saying is if you’re new to it rather than dive straight to a language , understand the fundamental principles , design patterns , and architectures and learning a language or framework would be very easy.

If anyone coming to canada will be looking for a software developer or designer or programmer job , I can let you know what the interview style for tech jobs are and what the interviewers generally want to hear .

Also lastly the most in demand tech stack right now : Ecmascript 2016 (updated Javascript) , Node JS , React JS , Express , MongoDB, Angular JS , Python and Ruby .. my fellow tech bros and sis focus on these if you’re tryna pick up a new skill and you can be sure of at least 70k cad at least in ottawa and toronto

Pls if your sponsor resides in the Uk and the account for sponsorship is a UK account, does it have any negative effect. (A reason for them to say you did not prove that you will come back because of your family ties)The sponsor travelled and didn't come back but is now a legal permanent resident?
How can someone request for a GCMS note?

To be honest , this would depend on the relationship to your sponsor. A close family member like parent or sibling wouldn’t dent your application , if it’s a distant family member or friend irrespective of where they are that generates more scrutiny. Make sure you show as much as possible the sponsor is truly willing to pay for your expenses and not just a front for the purpose of securing a visa

Hello house. Please does Canada give study permit for Co op undergraduate programs? My daughter gained admission for a co op program (it involves both work terms and academic terms).

A Coop work permit is a spearate document from the Study Permit. You can apply for both simultaneously , the only extra documentation needed is a letter from the Schools coop office that the student is in a coop program and as such a coop work permit is required . Last I checked , it’s free to apply . Alternatively , your kid could apply for the coop work permit after receiving a study permit. Validity of coop work permit is same as Study permit

Hi guys, please i m in a bit of a fix, so I need good advise. My father who wanna stand as my sponsor doesn't have good cash in flow in his account. Now a uncle whose surname is way different from mine now volunteered to stand as my sponsor just because he has a very good cash low in his company's account, but he is not giving any money in any way cos he has 3 kids in Canada already. But he is ready to give all necessary documents that will be needed. And he is well traveled too. So please advise me on how to go about it.

Especially the documents I am going to be needing from him if I should him and how it show show legit that he is sponsoring me.

Thank you all

Hey bro , most times relatives sponsoring is a tough sell, even tougher in this case if your uncle can only provide company statement of account . If he’ll be acting as the main sponsor, he should submit a personal account statement as well OR maybe take a few extra months to build up cash flow in your dad’s account ? Expantiate on what you mean by “cash flow isn’t good” ? lump sum deposits or ?

Hi fam greetings and happy Valentine's day

Am here to seek you all advice

I graduated with a very low Bsc 3rd class, last year i applied for undergraduate admission plans was to switch from the undergraduate science program to Pharmacy(Pharm D) after 2years

So I got admission to study Undergraduate chemistry then applied for student visa in my Sop i wrote how i like chemistry as a pure science and how i want to go back to it for undergraduate studies as it has been a desired program from childhood I never stated I intend using the program to move to Pharm D.

Now my visa was denied the V.O stated why do i want to go for another bachelors degree when I already have one also with work experience that I should explain and re-apply.

So I didn't since then i was so heart broken being that's my first visa application.
Now I just applied to a school undergraduate studies and got Scholarship of $7,500 out of $15,700 tuition

Do you think this time if I apply also stating that I will be switching to Pharmacy do you think there might be possibility with the visa issuance??

Sorry for the long stories cheesy

Be careful with your consistency . Whatever you stated in your SOP for the first application is probably still available to them so as much possible maintain your first story . You were denied for trying to do a second undergrad ,so provide strong justification as to why as asked : maybe blame quality of education in 9j and that you feel you’re not fully equipped for a postgrad ..

That is just a thought , another option is to get a postgrad acceptance at a school here that accepts 3rd , your new SOP could say you previously wanted a 2nd undergrad because due to your grade (which again you can blame quality of education in nigeria / strikes if you went to a fed school )you didn’t think you’d get admission but after further research you found XYZ uni . and then that way you can still stick to your love of chem story

Thats the issue most likely.

You didn't submit any statements showing liquid financial assets.

As far as I've heard corporate accounts don't count for much even if theres 50million there unless your sponsor submits a personal account as well.

My advice : resubmit with both personal account and company account. Maybe pay all the tuition completely if you can.

Also , make sure there is steady cash flow into the personal account for the duration of the statement , no unexplained lump sum

please help me correct my sop incase....correction are welcome

Paragraph 2

Mentioning things like social and economic growth as well as standard of living kinda makes it look like you’re considering the country for permanent relocation . Maybe i’m being overly cautious but might be safer to change the paragraph to why Canada is a good country to study , cite quality of education / teaching e.t.c

Second to Last Paragraph

Second sentence is kind of hanging . “Found xyz institute is really the best place “. Best place to ? .. might be better to restructure the paragraph highlighting you’re aware of the challenges of the program and emphasizing your desire to work hard and succeed .

Good day house,

Please I need advise on how to respond to the VO's comments and want people to also learn from it.

Attached is an extract of my GCMS note.

I applied for TRV in Sept and got denied in Dec as a result of purpose of study.

My first degree Accounting
2nd degree - Mba
Status - Married
Family size- 5
Applied alone
Working experience - 10yrs
Field of experience - accounting and finance related
Self sponsored
First semester fee paid
Resumption is May.

Course applied for: Global management
Schl : RRU

Issues:
1) Some people are of the opinion that I shld focus on d express entry. My response. I have been in the pool for a while now and my highest score is 367after 4 ielts hence my option of school route.

2) Why global management and not accounting? My response. Mid career change and accounting is relevant to global management

3)Active EE profile. This is where I really have a problem. I need to know how to respond and explain to the VO's concern.

Elders in the house, kindly assist.

In my opinion one issue that might look off is you said you already have an mba , are your pursuing a higher level than that ?(PhD?) .. cos otherwise it looks odd that you’re spending all that money to get another degree at the same level as what you have .
At what stage did you create this EE profile ?

Hello house, I have sumbitted my application to three colleges in Canada for PGD but still expecting my official admission letter. I completed my NYSC in 2016 and have already tried my hands on the GMAT on two occassions, Can anyone assist me on how to fill this gap in my SOP/LOE? What other thing can I prepare as I wait for the admission Letter. Thanks

To fill the gap You could say you took a break from school to refresh and do some travelling within nigeria and spent the time improving your skills by taking online courses in XYZ. If you did any kinda volunteering , you could also add that. There’s always the option to just straight up say you tried the Gmat in that timeframe

Hi everyone, I have been a silent reader.
I will be applying for my study permit to Pre-university next week and I wanted to check if my documents are complete and your opinion on what else to add. I also have two brothers studying in Canada, they took the program first before they got admitted in University.
Transcript, Waec, Waec Certificate and Neco
Secondary school leaving certificate (2016)
Prove of German language (Certificate) (2017, for educational gap explanation)

offer admission letter
letter of acceptance (LOA)
Full tuition payment of ($17000)
Birth Certificate and Siblings birth certificate
International passport
Passport picture
My 2 brothers enrolment letter in Canada university (Undergraduate program)
Their school fees receipt (24000 CAN AND 25000CAN) (They are in 2nd year)
Their first year school fees receipt also.
Their house lease in Canada
-My mom's bank statement for 6month (16m naira after all tuition has been made)
-Affidavit by mom (She is the one paying)
-Company's document, Tax-payment etc
-Asset such as Land, properties etc documents
-Mom's Marriage certificate
-Dad's death certificate
-Reference letter from bank
-Police character report
-Upfront medical
-My Affidavit for change of name

-Please kindly reply telling me what document to add, God bless

Hey , as someone who also went through a pre uni program couple years ago , you look set but I agree with the person who said the info about your brothers is not necessary.
As a general rule only add docs that are highly relevant as the more documents you have , the more documents they have to potentially verify and the longer your application could take .
