@Cap28: I'm pretty sure u heard that saying "When u fight with a fool, people, from a distance, can't tell who is who. . . ." Or something to that effect. Run off and go take your pills, oh, and next time, maybe u wanna sniff that coke thru your nostrils instead if thru your aszzhole! Oloshi!
hahaha - yoruba coward what do you know about fighting, i can guarantee you that you would defecate all over yourself at the first hint of any immediate danger.  Your Awo did the world a favour by committing suicide.  The north understand you and use you accordingly - you are only good for one thing - bending over and taking it up the a.rse from the hausa fulani oligarchy, go back to keeping your yoruba face firmly buried in between the butt cheeks of the hausa fulani oligarchy where it belongs, anuohia.

It is obvious that Awo was an unmitigated power hungry coward who did not have the balls to form an alliance with Ojukwu. Imagine feelbly giving in to the north on the dubious grounds that the yorubas would have been decimated by northern soldiers (maybe not such a bad idea when you think about it). This old coward hedged his bets and decided to opt for an easy way out by pitching his tent with the barbarians in the north, thank god in the end he ended up never realising his dream for power.

This old coward was having wet dreams about seizing power but in the characteristic cowardly manner of a yoruba man wanted someone else to do the fighting for him, this is the same man who tried to overthrow the northerners by way of a coup d'etat in 1953 - apparently the charges of treason levelled against him by the balewa govt were true, he should have been left to rot in prison.

Baba nla oponu ni bobo Cap28 yi, men! I can't believe this kind of individual actually thinks himself intelligent. Always regurgitating nonsensical, irritating and moronic views! What a waste.
yoruba coward learn to disagree in english when you are not in agreement with someone who doesnt speak your language.

intelligent people who dont agree with a view normally state why, they dont resort to incoherent mumbling ,
i know cowardice is a major trait of your people this is why cowardly Awo ended up being used and dumped by the north as for that other wannabe historian called Katsumoto save your pretentious bull shi.t for those who give a shi.t about your opinions.

Taking a deep breath.
Perhaps. . . just perhaps for once in your lives. . . if you had united as southerners. . . including the abandoned property chasers of the South. . . with a common goal. . . the North would not have run rough shod unchecked all the way to Biafra. That set the tone for Nigerian politics to this day. There is always an excuse for cowardice. . . like the reason why Okpara and Ironsi (thanks to Ejor and co)were not killed during the first coup by the 'Igbo man' Nzeogwu. Or don't tell me the 'non-commissioned' Hausa junior officers were given this major task huh?

You aided in the starvation of the Igbos. True or false?

Now. . .thanks to y'all. . .the only killers with balls come from the North.

Gedddit?
killers with balls my arse - primitive barbarians you mean, the true test of a soldier is his ability to defend the soverign integrity of his own nation or the ability to invade and annex other nations - isnt it strange how it took these supposed soldiers 4 years to defeat biafra - and this was with the combined might of british, russian and egyptian support.  You see these illiterates who were mere infantry men did not even have the tactical skill to prosecute a conventional war, if biafra had had the support that nigeria had, these northern peasants would have been decimated in droves.

I am going to try to summarize this to keep things really brief here.
Nzeogwu started the plot. Period. I don't care what the reasons were. Nzeogwu is Igbo(real or fake Igbo=igbobuigbo)
You are a real fool - do you know that, only a fool could reason the way you do, what does it matter who the architect of the plot was , the point is it was done for a legitimate reason - to clear out those illiterate bas.tards who were intent on dragging nigeria backwards  ,  try researching a topic before making st.upid and baseless claims, even Obasanjo who was Nzeogwu's roomate at the nigerian military training college stated categorically in his book "An Intimate Portrait of Kaduna Nzeogwu" that Nzeogwu and Ironsi were not tribalists and that the coup was not an igbo coup.
If you dont care what the reasons were behind the coup why whine and complain about the current state taht nigeria is in, your illiterate basta.rd brethren succeeded in hijacking a nation that had so much potential and transformed it into an extension of their backward caliphate, you must be so proud of your illiterate brothers.

The Igbos, the Yorubas and the Urhobos. Except the 'puny' non-commissioned Hausas of course.

Because you are lazy cowards who can't fight for your rights in the face of oppression. Now we know a coup is not the best way to fight corruption right?
And you illiterate bastards who couldnt compete academically with southerners becasue you were still stuck in the stone age are the brave warriors? Brave warriors who targeted innocent defenceless igbo men women and children because of extreme jealousy and inferiority complex.

Has nigeria been coup free since July 66?  Were igbos responsible for the coups of 76,84, 85 and 93 - you are a prize fool in need of an education.

They became extremely paranoid of course. Do you blame them?
To describe them as being paranoid would mean according them human traits, how can a genocidal beast be capable of paranoia, how can a beast capable of splitting open a pregnant woman's stomach be categorised as a human being?

How could they understand that when the coup was ill-planned and poorly executed to make Okpara, Zik and Osadebey. . .mysteriously M.I.A?
Okpara and Osadebey were in the country during the time of the coup you fool - both of them were placed under house arrest- please go and acquaint yourself with your history as you are an embarrassment, only Zik was out of the country on medical leave, medical leave which had been approved prior to his departure by Balewa.

Too late.
ARABA could not happen because water had already passed the bridge and the British had stepped in. Oil had been discovered in Nigeria.
You must think everyone is as dumb and braindead as yourself - your illiterate subhuman brothers had been instructed by their masters the british NOT TO SECEDE - they were too st.upid to even understand that secession would leave them worse off, as a matter of fact the americans threatened to cut off any form of economic aid to them if they seceded because all they had to survive was arid desert - when they realised they could hide under the cloak of fake unity and also get rich off the wealth of the south they started bleating on about unity - you and them are complete scum.

Only one answer to all of the above.

The Igbos started the whole mess and when others joined, little did they know that there were saboteurs in their midst. What ever happened after that ill-conceived coup was not in anyone's control. Never mind what came after that. Why a few non-commissioned Hausas?

If the Igbos did not start that so-called anti corruption mayhem within the Nigerian army, others would not have had the reason to over-react.

So, the civilians were corrupt, the best thing to do was to go on a killing rampage? undecided

You guys never fail to amaze me. I will not even get into the details of the coup that subsequently led to the civil war(the result of the Nzeogwu-Ojukwu rivalry)

Nzeogwu started the coup and Ojukwu started the Biafra war. . . see where we are now.

Thanks to the Igbos.
let me get this right - the igbos "started this whole  mess" because a group of igbo, yoruba and northern soldiers decided to get rid of a group of corrupt politicians that had decided to place their own personal and selfish interests above the interests of the people they had been elected to serve?

These saboteurs who were in their midst - who were they? Are you aware that it was Aguiyi Ironsi who foiled the coup in lagos, since Aguiyi Ironsi was an igbo man and this coup was designed to enable the igbos take over - why on earth didnt he simply go along with it ? why round up and imprison all the igbo officers involved?

Are you aware that the northerners were given a parliamentary majority in the house of reps on the basis that they had the largest  population in nigeria, this later turned out to be bogus , however the damage had already been done, - this majority gave them more seats  than the combined seats for the eastern and western regions, why did this happen and why was this not redressed when it was discovered that the north had inflated their census figures?

YOu say what happened after the January 66 coup was outside anyone's control - why then did it take approximately 5 months for the northern soldiers to retaliate, 6 months is a long time in which to sit down and analyse events, surely they had had enough time in which to get to the root of why the January coup took place and why, its sounds to me as if this was a calculated attempt to embark on an ethnic cleansing programme - the intention being to wipe out all potential igbo opposition from the nigerian army once and for all.

by the way  after the relentless massacre of igbo officers and NCO's why did northern soldiers extend these killings to igbo men women and children living in northern towns - sounds again like there  was a concerted effort by northern soldiers to perpetrate the genocide of igbo men women and childdren

were the northern soldiers unaware of the corruption going on in nigeria or did they place ethnic loyalty to their sardauna and the caliphate above national loyalty to the nigerian people - if they were so aggreived at the loss of their sardauna why didnt they just secede from the rest of the country as initially threatened by murtala muhammed(a major participant in the massacre of igbo soldiers)?

Was it the Northerners that were killing twins in Opobo?
We all had our ethnic specialties right?
Of course they were the most peaceful then, despite the sectarian unrests in their regions. . . just like they still are in present day Nigeria.
Yet you Igbos still live and work there to this day right?
Yes, there are unrests here and there once in a while. . . like you have your armed bandits, kidnappers and ritualists all over the Southern parts of Nigeria.
Why do these same Northerners not cause the same problems in the Southern parts of Nigeria huh?

At least the Northerners did not commit any form of treason on the whole of Nigeria like the Igbos who showed them the way. . . Nigeria has never been the same. Then came coup after coup after coup till now.
Its really strange how your analysis of the January 66 coup focuses in on one day rather than throwing light on the circumstances that led up to the 15 january 66 coup.

I dont know whether you are deliberately being disingenuous or whether you are just ignorant of your own history,  - prior to the Jan 66 coup, igbos constituted the majority of middle grade ranking officers in the nigerian army , the bulk of the majors in the nigerian army were igbo  while the majority of the junior ranking officers were northerners.  This would mean that when superior ranking officers retired igbo officers would be next in line as  commanding officers to lower ranked northerners.  the igbo officers at the time were well educated, intelligent and very capable, by contrast many of the northerners were uneducated and were concentrated in infantry divisions.

Igbo officers made up the bulk of the officer corp, many northern politicians were very concerned about this and wanted this "imbalance" redressed as they were fearful of what they saw as "the igbos taking over".  Rather than compete honorably with their southern peers  they resorted to cheating - the northern politicians intervened and lowered the educational entry requirements for officers by making the entrance exam less rigorous they also introduced a "quota system". Northerners were allocated a 50% share of the recruitment quota while easterners and westerners were allocated 25%  each. the effect of this was that it became easier for northerners to gain entry into the nigerian army.

Many northerners such as IBB, sani abacha, dimka, jerry useni  and  murtala muhammed were beneficiaries of this quota system - funny how these people went on to become regulars in the execution of coup d'etats in nigeria which resulted in the clock being turned back in the economic and political development of nigeria.

Please, be truthful.
Igbos and Biafra SOLELY set the tone of distrust and acrimony in Nigerian history by preempting the first civil war in Nigerian history.
Subsequently, their oafish arrogance cannot let other Nigerians forget the insult.

Prior to the Nigerian civil war, the Northerners were peaceful creatures till the Igbos reared their greedy, ugly yam-like heads.
Till today, all they go about doing is beating their not-so-smart chests to be this and that.
Useless, cold blooded killers.
Now we have a place like Abia state with Aba as the headquarters of Kidnapping ventures according to your own Igbo sister Dr. Okonjo-Iwaela.
After shedding all that useless Biafra blood as rejected Osu sacrifices on behalf of Nigeria.

They should not blame anyone but themselves for the innocent Igbos that were killed on behalf of their stoopid actions that all started in 1966.

If they were so noble in their intentions, why did they not let the Northerners in, if indeed they wanted to cleanse Nigeria of corruption?
Blazay - can you answer a few of the following questions for me -

If the January coup was an "igbo coup" why did the likes of major ademoyega, lieutenant fola oyewole - all yoruba officers
and  the following n northerners - atom kpera, husa kanga, musa manga, lekoja gidan jibrin, bako lamundo, joseph goji, lagwin goshit, yakubu kaje and many other non commissioned northern soldiers participate in this coup?

Also if the igbo officers involved were doing so in order to take over, why did they plan on releasing Awo from jail once the coup succeeded?

You say igbos set the tone of distrust and acrimony in nigeria - if that was indeed the case why were the yorubas rioting over the appointment of Akintola as premier of the western region in 1962 which led Balewa to declare a state of emergency?

You have described igbos as being bloodthirsty but there were in total 9 civilian casualties of the January 66 coup and 12 soldiers, of the 9 civilian casualties 5 were corrupt politicians, lets contrast that with the casualties of the July 66 coup -  FORTY FIVE OFFICERS were killed and of those 45,  THIRTY SEVEN were igbo, in addition approximately 300 igbo NCO's were killed by northern soldiers - some of whom were their class mates.

I have not even included the thousands of innocent igbos that were massacred in the north, therefore can you explain to me how you have come to the conclusion that the igbos are bloodthirsty murderers while northerners are peaceful people.

have you noticed the recent trend going on all over the world ? countrys that were once all white are now getting a huge influx of black africans and other people of color into them ? places like italy, sweden, denmark, switzerland, luxembourg, hungary etc etc etc ? who do you think is in charge of this ? the jewish rulers of the world. they are using africans and other people of color as pawns to weaken the homogenous european countrys because what this creates is a situation like america where there is so much infighting between the races and this creates a diversion. the more you see, the less you know.
i dont think theres a deliberate effort on the part of powerful jews to encourage migration of africans to europe in order to weaken the racial dominance of one particular group, it would take a huge number of african immigrants to have any significant impact on the racial make up of any european nation and the chances of that ever happening are equal to zero based on the stringent immigration laws operated by european nations.

i think whats happening is that the economic destabalisation and enslavment of africa has created extreme poverty and suffering for many africans, this in turn has led to many africans having to seek (supposedly)  greener pastures  abroad.  The europeans have not exactly welcomed africans with open arms, despite masterminding many of the economic problems which plague africa, the EU has responded by building a fortress around europe designed for the specific purpose of keeping africans out.  this is why i said you should read that memorandum NSSM 200 it gives you an insight into western foreign policy with regard to africa.

on the contrary my friend, africa means very little to them. all africa is, is a place to get raw materials. nothing more nothing less. africa is not a threat. like i said the first cards to fall in the game are all white countries. nobody cares about africa. the few people you see infiltrating african govts are only doing this to protect their interests. nothing sinister. just to make sure somebody does not flip the script on them and decide to increase the price or to supply someone else (like say china ). the people in control are not necessarily whites. they are jews.
i dont agree - if africa meant nothing to the  west the US govt would not have spent billions of dollars setting up AFRICOM  - the US is now so desperate to keep China out of Africa that it is now prepared to deploy troops to the region - it doesnt get anymore desperate than that bro

China has surpassed the US in becoming africa's greatest trading partner and the US are very unhappy about this, they've tried economic threats against offending african countries and that hasnt worked now they're resorting to military force.

I can't even begin to comprehend how one can say that we "have to totally put ethnic differences to one side" and from the other side of one's mouth attack the Hausa-Fulani oligarchy. The Hausa-Fulani oligarchy might be part of the reason (but not even the main reason) for the backwardness of much of the North, but the military is the main reason for Nigeria's ills and only a minute number of the major characters in that structure were of Hausa-Fulani oligarchic extraction. The rest, whether Gowon or Obasanjo or IBB were commoners.

And if Thomas Sankara had been born in Nigeria, we would be calling him a Hausa-Fulani, the same way Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was considered one. The North is a burden, but not for ethnic reasons.
i meant the nigerian masses of various ethnic groups who are not affiliated to the northern oligarchs need to put ethnic differences aside, the hausa fulani oligarchy are nigeria's ruling elite and they are the root cause of the problem we have in nigeria today, they are the ones who have hijacked the economic and political future of nigeria.

Gowon, IBB  and OBJ may not be ethnically hausa fulani but they are members of the hausa fulani oligarchy or northern cabal which control nigeria.

These people's rise to power can be traced to the July 1966 coup which placed nigeria on the downward spiral that we are currently in.

there is no distinction between soldiers of northern extraction and civilian politicans also of northern extraction they are both serving the same interests, both are corrupt and work to perpetuate their hold on power.  I dont make a distinction between the two.

Thomas Sankara came from a totally different mindset from these criminals - he was a revolutionary hero  who intended to bring about real change for his people, how on earth can you compare him to these lowlifes that we have been burdened with for over 50 years?

Whether you want to accept it or not Tafawa Balewa and his northern cronies were all part of the problem, corruption, nepotism, thuggery and election rigging were all rife during his tenure in office.

dude, the mistake you are making is in thinking this is a black and white issue. this is a rich vs poor issue. the rich elite who control the world. countries like iceland, argentina, greece, and ireland have all fallen victim to this covert subjugation of the world by the rich elite controlling the world. these are all white countries that have being seized by the banks. argentina belongs to the banks now. iceland belongs to the bank. thats the NEW WORLD ORDER bruh. not a black or a white thing. but still within this new world order you can thrive if you work as a cohesive unit, plan wisely, and use your money wisely. stop stealing all the money and taking it to foreign banks. bruh ? i think you need a lesson in how the world runs. black man is black mans problem.

read up on the rotschilds. the big jewish banking family that owns like nearly all the world lol (ok maybe a slight exaggeration but you get the point )
what you have said regarding the international banking elite is correct, yes the banking elite do  control sovereign nations and have actually been in control of the US congress and its economy for over 100 years, however the situation with regard to africa takes on a particularly sinister twist mainly because there are other agendas at play.  The banking elite have always been advocates of eugenics which is the beleif in a master race (the white race) who they beleive are destined to rule the world till eternity.  In that regard africa and its people have been regarded as expendable, if you look at US and european foreign policy there is a common thread running through it - one of domination, subjugation and oppression of african people and our resources.  I would advise you to read a declassified memorandum prepared by the former national security advisor during the Nixon administration which highlighted US concerns in respect of several emerging economies in the so called third world - all of these nations shared similar characteristics - they had high populations of non white people, they  were rich in natural resources and were regarded as possible economic competitiors to the US, for these very reasons these nations were deemed national security threats to the interest of the US.  The plan was to "neutralise" the development of these emerging economies.  VArious methods of neutralisation were discussed and recommended - some included: internal wars, famine, economic sanctions, biological warfare or all out external military intervention.  I woudl advise you to read this memo its called NSSM 200 and it was declassified in 1989 - it lists several countries of concern - nigeria is one of those countries.

funny you should mention the  Rothschilds, i was reading about how they have been manipulating and controlling the US congress, sovereign nations and the international  banking system for centuries.  No its not a slight exaggeration they actually DO own the world, according to an article i read they are worth in the region of
USD $500 trillion!!!

but thats besides the point. that was a different era. this is a new era. other parts of the world have experienced meteoric rise in the span of less than 50 years while we keep retrogressing not because of the white man but because the black man loves himself too much and loves his wealth too much. thats the bottom-line.
no , you've got it wrong - that era of exploitation and appropriation of our wealth and resources is still very much with us, albeit under a different name.  Instead of colonialism what we have now is "globalisation" do not be misled or deceived into thinking anything has changed.  Instead of the in your face era of white supremacy and african subjugation you now have white men in business suits with fake smiles and handshakes  who are officials of the world bank, imf , shell, chevron, exxon mobil, total and elf coercing african nations into the devaluation of their currencies, the cutting of their public spending on social services, the taking on of loans at crippling interest rates and the selling off of their entire public sector at bargain basement rates to predatory multinational corporations.

The slave master has merely undergone cosmetic surgery, the outward appearance has been upgraded but the intentions and objectives remain the same.

The black zimbabweans and south africans have not yet returned the favour - in order to return the favour they would have to kick out all whites from south africa and redistribute the wealth and natural resources of their respective countries and then nationalise the whole of the mining industry, has that happened yet - of course not.

Similarly the zimbabweans would have to completely take back ALL of the land currently in the hands of white farmers who stole it from them - has this happened? i think not

Look at what happened to Mugabe when he started the process of land redistribution - look at how he was dealt with - the US in collaboration with the EU froze zimbabwe's access to international credit facilities, froze their export markets, preventing zimbabwe from trading with the outside world and forced zimbabwe into economic meltdown.

thanx bro, we cannot resolve our problems unless we go back in history and identify the origin of those problems.

unless nigerians can overcome ethnic differences and understand that the common enemy here are the nigerian elite, controlled by the hausa fulani oligarchy then we are doomed.

If we want to move forward as one nation we have to totally put ethnic differences to one side, based on our track record this looks like a near impossible task.

If we can do this and produce a revolutionary leader of the calibre of Chavez, Nkrumah or Sankara then we just might be able to defeat the west and their hausa fulani puppets- if we choose to carry on with the inter ethnic hatred then we can forget about ever becoming a great nation, the other alternative is for us to split along ethnic lines - however the odds will be severely stacked against each independent state, my prediction is that the west will once again get behind the north and there will be a repeat of the nigeria/biafra civil war.

good read. i have read all 4 pages and found it all to be hysterically funny. this whole idea of the west exploiting africa first off is 'relatively' absolute bollocks.
Can i ask you a question? do you think the carving up of africa by europe in 1885 was "absolute bollocks" ?

how about the amputation of limbs of congolese men, women and children by belgian colonial officers during belgium's colonial rule over Congo?

Are you aware that it was standard practice for belgian soldiers to cut off the hands of congolese  men and the br.easts of their wives  if their husbands  came back from the forests without collecting enough rubber for the lucrative rubber exportation business that Belgium was engaged in at the time?

Are you also aware that german colonial soldiers massacred thousands of rebellious namibian tribes who refused to voluntarily give up their fertile land to make way for german settlers - did you know that many of these tribes were  decimated almost into extinction and many were driven into the Namibian desert where they died of dehydration and starvation?

These are just a few of many atrocities that were comitted by white colonial soldiers in africa in the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century all in a bid to get their hands on our land and the resources in the land.

Do you consider those incidents to be "relatively absolute bollocks"?

These things called resources are in the ground and will continue to be in the ground if the west have no need for it because lets face it, africans wouldnt know what to do with those resources let alone how to mine them let alone know what they are. for me, i think the only issue is the environmental damage that is left behind when they mine for the resources. the ecosystem is polluted and made toxic. as per the resources ? its like someone coming to your house and seeing a stone on the ground that you have ignored for all your life and considered dirt, then me informing you that the stone is some good stuff and i will pay you 30 dollars for it. shyttt thats a plus to me. and those resources are needed to make stuff that even africans enjoy. the television you watch, the cars you drive, your mobile phones, your generator, etc etc. so i dont see the 'exploitation' as a problem because we are getting paid for those resources. its not like they are taking them for free. nigeria makes 29 billion dollars annually from oil alone.
why does this sound like something a white south african or white zimbabwean would say and not a black african?
this argument sounds ominously identical to what white supremacists use in order to excuse their genocide and brutalisation of non white people, actually this argument is normally referred to as the "white man's burden argument" - this is an argument in which the white man states that he had to invade, annex and murder thousands and in some cases millions of blacks for their own good because blacks are naturally uncivilised and need to be brought up to the same standard of civilisation as the superior race (the white race).   The argument goes something like this:

" Every abomination that we perpetrated against them was done "for their own good", had we not done what we did these heathen people would still be living in a primitive subhuman state.
At the end of the day they should be grateful that we allowed them to become "independent" states.  So what if we handed power to a group of brutal puppet leaders, what does it matter that these puppets are merely our collaborators who are merely ripping off their own people, we couldnt care less, after all africans are not fully human and are used to living in a state of squalor and extreme poverty.  The main thing is that we can continue to have access to cheap raw materials and cheap labour.  Democracy does not apply when you are dealing with africans as they are too childlike and inferior to appreciate the benefits of such a system.  The main thing is that we retain our position in the world and if it means a few million people have to suffer as a result so be it.
Lets face it,  without us they wouldnt even know that they were sitting on billions of dollars worth of black gold".

This is the mindset of the average white supremacist - and it seems as if you and them look at black people in the same way.

The problem with your analysis is that it sees everything through the eyes of a white man, in your eyes the white man's way of looking at the world is the correct way, every other way is backward and primitive.  According to you the black man should be grateful to the white man because left to his own devices he would not have appreciated the value of crude oil, i would argue that this is an incorrect way to judge a black man's world view,  prior to the invasion from the white man the black man had a different civilisation which was serving the needs of his people adequately.  The white man perceives the world in terms of money, plunder and exploitation ie capitalism, this is why he left his own country, there was a need for him to  venture out into the world, his own countries were poor and therefore he had to explore, occupy and appropriate the wealth of other nations  - this is what drives him, but this did not apply to the black man because he already had a land rich in resources, on this basis he had no need to think or behave like the white man.  What you are trying to do here is blame the black man for not initially adopting a capitalist outlook which the white man had to adopt out of necessity but which was not necessary for the black man.

Prior to the discovery of crude oil in Oloibiri in 1958, people in the riverine areas were engaged in the palm oil trade with europeans, actually palm oil was one of south eastern nigeria's largest exports, the whites refined it and used it as a  lubricant for machinery and also for soap products, did the white man teach us how to grow and harvest palm oil produce ?

africas problems lies squarely on the shoulders of africans. nigerians are very unpatriotic, un-resourceful, worship wealth almost to the detriment of their own existence, very disorganized, non long-suffering, no staying power for completion of projects, always look to others for validation, dont know how to transfer knowledge from one generation to the next, very possessive of information and will not share it for the greater good of the community, misplaced priorities, lack of critical thinking, very corrupt, extremely myopic,  and thats just the beginning. thats our problem in a nutshell.
i am forced to agree with you that we nigerians are unpatriotic, worship wealth etc etc however there is a reason for that and it is primarily because we have adopted an alien culture ie the white man's love for materialism and unadulterated consumerism.  As a conquered race our culture was destroyed and replaced with christianity/islam  and capitalism.  We were brainwashed into beleiving that our own culture and religion was backward, heathen and primitive, we were told to aspire to be more like our masters, this mentality is now ingrained in the average nigerian and will take extensive re education and reprogramming in order to put us in a mental state where we are capable of thinking in a manner which is devoid of inferiority complex, greed, consumerist and materialistic obsessions and extreme selfishness.

The other reason behind our current backward state is that we are not really a nation, we are merely just a group of diverse people who have been forcefully thrown together and who do not have a common purpose or goal , the northerners want a country governed under sharia law, the igbos do not want to live under such a system and i m pretty sure the non muslim yorubas and other ethnic groups dont want that either and yet we are told that in the interests of "unity" we must remain as one entity for better for worse.  Where have you ever seen a country that can progress where all its citizens do not have a common purpose and vision for their country?

if nigeria were to split along ethnic lines i believe that this would engender a spirit of nationalism in each respective ethnic group, with each group wanting to work towards building up and developing their own  country.
look at how resourceful the igbos were during the biafran war - they were able to make their own improvised weapons, run schools, courts and markets and even operate their own currency - all this acheived during a state of siege!!!! - it was that nationalistic spirit that kept the igbos going even in the face of so much adversity.  Imagine what they would have acheived under normal circumstances.

now in another thread i commented about exploited resources and hence run the risk of sounding like a hypocrite but if anything is being exploited by the west, it is our humanity as africans not our resources. the fact that they feel that they can push us around, infiltrate anywhere they want and take whatever they want is an assault to the humanity of africans. i think this is where the problem lies. our humanity is being exploited
You can not separate our humanity from our natural resources the two go hand in hand.
The thing you seem to be forgetting is that before the discovery of crude oil many of our people were fishermen or subsistence farmers, this land that has now been appropriated by the FGN in cahoots with the IOCs was owned by indigenous people, therefore by right any resources found underneath this land should remain the property of the landowner.  If you appropriate land which was serving as a means of livelihood to a people without giving them any form of compensation and then to make matters worse pollute and devastate that land, surely you have taken away their humanity.  Land is a form of wealth and anything in, under or on it is part of the land therefore taking it away from that person without compensating them is not only theft but an abuse of a person's basic human rights.

many of our people regard land as an integral part of their identity without access or rights over your land you are a dispossessed people, the first thing the apartheid south african govt did to the black south african people was disposses them of their land and "resettle" them in barren isolated townships, this also happened in kenya where the british stole fertile land from the kikuyu people and dumped them in overcrowded ghettos, zimbabwe - again the british farmers appropriated the most fertile land and again resettled the indigenous people in ghettos, these are all forms of human rights abuse and should not be defended.

Nigerians have absolutely nothing, I mean nothing to learn from a mentality that makes a certain segment of American society the biggest joke of the world. Every single group of migrants to this country consider that segment of America with the worlds most terrible mentality the absolute biggest joke in humanity.

The idea of some "white" man stopping you from being useful to yourself is un-abriged stupidity. What so-called "white" man are some people talking about sef?

Our problems have absolutely nothing, I mean nothing at all to do with anybody's skin colour including ours. It is stupidity for us to be even discussing such rubbish

Japan is a country where Westerners are loved to death regardless of Atomic bombs and all. They are more developed than virtually all Western countries. Stop bringing skin colour into issues that it has no relevance in. It makes us a caricature in front of the world
You should not lump everyone into the same category, in every society you have differing levels of intelligence, you have intellectuals, academics, entertainers, ordinary working people etc, the same goes for nigeria, to dismiss an entire group of people as being a joke is wrong and totally misses the point.

African americans will go down in history as producing some of the greatest radical minds and intellectual thinkers of the 20th century.

Many radical african intellectuals believed in the philosophy and ideology of radical thinkers such as Malcolm X.

look at the calibre of young men who shook america in the 1960s - Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, H Rap Brown, Huey Newton these were all young black men in their 20s and 30s who dared to challenge the monster that is white supremacy.

The nigerian military are 100 times more brutal than the white supremacists in america.  The reason i say this is because in a way you can understand a white man brutalising a black man, when he looks at a black man he cannot relate to him because he does not see himself in a black person,  with the nigerian military they look into the faces of their own people and STILL brutalise us DESPITE being of the same race as us - its tragic.

During the civil rights marches of the 1960s african americans were still given some semblance of protection from their govt as the federal govt ordered federal troops to escort black students to all white schools to protect them from lynch mobs, contrast that with the way in which Obasanjo ordered troops to rampage through the niger delta in response to peaceful protests from demonstrators.

The big elephant in the room which you have failed to even notice is the superior military might that the US and other european nations have over africa , military might is the ultimate determiner of power, when you say that we are merely making excuses you fail to understand that the reason we were conquered and remain a conquered nation is not due to our inability to develop but our inability to defend our sovereignty, nigeria cannot prevent any military attack from an external power, therefore even if we were to suceed in kicking out the kleptocrats and refused to carry on with the destructive economic policies of the  IMF and world bank we would STILL be at risk of military attack from the west, it is not simply a case of getting your economy on track as i have cited a few instances where democratically elected govts were subsequently toppled because they were not the "right type of governments".

Japan was rewarded with a place at the table of the G8 nations because the US wanted to create pro western countries  in south east asia, these countries acted as buffer zones and helped to prevent the spread of communism within that region, as a reward for staying loyal to the US they are allowed to develop economically.

The US operates what it calls spheres of influence - this means that nations lying within certain regions of the world are under US control, all of this was decided between the US and europe in 1823 under what is known as the Monroe doctrine the agreement was that europe would not interfere with or colonise any part of the western hemisphere, by the same token the US was also not to interfere with any regions of the world already colonised by europe.

It should therefore be clear to you that control and domination of world resources had already been shared out amongst europe and the US  with everyone else playing the part of a pawn on a grand chess board.

The entire continent of africa was and is still seen as a source of cheap raw materials for europe and america.  What you have totally failed to understand is that africa remains a possession of europe, all the nation states of africa were created by white men in the berlin 1885 conference.  those artificial countries were created for the economic benefit of europe, the resources contained in those nations remain under the control of western govts and western owned multinationals.  The only difference being that the europeans have appointed handpicked collaborators to oversee the exploitation process, that is the model that europe designed for africa and that model remains in place.  Notice what happens when any nation tries to break free from that model - remember biafra, remember how britain immediately came to the rescue of nigeria and crushed the secession of biafra, that was because europe will not tolerate a deviation away from this model.
there are other examples - southern sudan has been trying to secede and form a seperate nation from northern sudan for over 30 years, angola was at war for around 30 years in order to free itself from portuguese control the list goes on.

They say the beginning of wisdom is to know who  your enemies are, conversely the mark of foolishness  is to remain blissfully ignorant of who your enemies are.

Since you seem to think that the white man is our best friend who has all of our best interests at heart, i would appreciate it if you could explain to me how it is that nigerian politicians after looting the national treasury are able to electronically transfer billions of dollars in funds to switzerland, the UK, germany, and various other foreign banks, how are they able to do this without any assistance or co-operation from foreigners.

How about the arms trade - why is it that the US and the UK provide billions of dollars in military aid to the nigerrian govt and for what purpose?

Can you explain the following for me as well,  why was  Hugo Chavez  kidnapped and flown out of Venezuela in a US sponsored coup detat despite being his country's democratically elected candidate - why did this happen.

Also why  was Jean Bertrand Aristide of Haiti also kidnapped in 2004 and flown out of the country again by the CIA and dumped in Congo until he was eventually taken to South africa where he remains to date despite being the democratically elected president of his country?

I would appreciate responses to the above, thanks

Are you saying both sides are right?
Are you saying it is normal for our leaders to kowtow without asking questions?

You have not proferred any way out.
Nope am not saying both sides are right at all - im saying both sides are part of a criminal conspiracy designed to exploit the nigerian people.

Our leaders are not in a position to ask questions because they depend on the west for military aid and export markets, if nigeria starts getting too uppity with the west all the west needs to do is :

destabilise the country internally - very easy to do in multi ethnic nigeria -where ethnic groups are forever at each others throats - remember what happened in Jos?

impose economic trade embargoes - remember what the US and EU did to Zimbabwe and are still doing to Cuba, North Korea and Iraq?

cut off military aid

cut off oil exports to the US and the EU (Iraq)

if any of the above fail to acheive the desired result, launch a military attack (this is what they eventually did with Iraq when Saddam started trying to export his oil to the EU using the euro instead of the dollar thereby undermining america's control of international oil prices

You guys simply do not understand that the nigerian govt will not and cannot challenge any foreign multinational because they will  be crushed.  You should try and read up about what BP (british oil company) did to a former Iranian president when he nationalised the iranian oil industry.

The only way out is for a revolutionary grass roots movement which is militarily equipped to combat any internal as well as external attack - no mean feat but possible, Venezuela has managed to do this but they could not have done it without Chavez, we do not have a Chavez yet but thats not to say we will never have one.

As it stands the FGN can not and will not bite the finger that is keeping it in business, Shell and the FGN are like a mafia run crime syndicate, the FGN allows the IOC's in to loot and plunder. They are even allowed to cause massive environmental devastation without having to worry about the cost of cleaning it up - this is all part of the deal.

In return the FGN is allowed to keep recycling the same old criminals who are guaranteed security and protection with a beefed up army, mobile police and other security operatives which protect these crooks.

I dont know why this is coming as a suprise to anyone, this is standard operating procedure for ALL multinationals and foreign govts that appropriate natural resources from third world countries.

This same method was used in the democratic rep of Congo in the 1960s, the belgian govt fomented internal uprisings and encouraged the mineral rich sections of the country to secede because they wanted to make it impossible for the democratically elected but revolutionary leader Patrice Lumumba to govern the country.

Eventually Lumumba was assassinated by the belgians and american CIA and replaced with a puppet leader - Mobutu Sese Seko who was kept in power by the americans for 35 years.
Fashion › Re: Africa Not Fashionable Enough. Seriously ? by cap28: 9:13pm On Dec 14, 2010
the pics are professionally done and the models are beautiful, the only problem is no white publication will bother with them because western society does not promote the beauty of black women.  This is the reason why Naomi Campbell despite having very european facial features and body shape STILL faces discrimination in the modelling industry.  The western modelling and beauty industry has been established to promote and extoll the beauty of white women, all other races are expected to aspire to be as "beautiful" as white women not the other way around, this is why an african vogue will never be permitted.

Until very recently black women were not even considered a viable market to target when selling beauty products.

I think we need to look at doing our own thing and not always seek to copy and promote western ideals of beauty, many of the clothes modelled stil retain the style and aesthetics normally associated with white women - the white ideal of beauty is not the same as the black ideal of beauty therefore we should learn to have the confidence to be our own people and build on the god given attributes that we have.

This editor sounds extremely naive - is he saying that up until these disclosures by wikileaks he had no idea that nigeria was crawling with foreign intelligence operatives?  I find it very difficult to believe that a journalist would be totally clueless about how the IOC's operate in nigeria.

Also he seems to be unaware that nigeria is a police state and therefore in any police state the media is always heavily censored by its govt,  this is actually demonstrated by the fact that majority of the nigerian newspapers and other media outlets are owned by corrupt nigerian politicians - this indicates that there is a conspiracy on the part of the nigerian elite to keep nigerians in the dark about what is really going on in their own country.

To be honest the only uncensored news that i have read about nigeria from a nigerian journalist is news from sahara reporters, the western corporate media like CNN, bbc, msnbc is also censored - notice how they conveniently never mention anything about their own involvement in the ongoing corruption in nigeria.

Non mainstream western media will report the truth but these are usually provided by independent freelance journalists, many of whom provide this info at great risk to their lives.

The reason that nigerian politicians willingly provide foreign journalists with confidential info is not because they (the nigerian govt) are stupid but because the foreign media and the IOC's are the senior partners in this criminal partnership , the nigerian govt owes its very existence to the west, is it not the same western countries that help them into office by assisting them in election rigging, isnt it the same west who provides the intelligence reports that enable them know the right time to stage coup d'etats?  Isnt it the same west that provides them with military aid which ensures that they are armed to the teeth in order to ensure they retain their stranglehold on power?

The idea that the nigerian govt is in the dark about what is going on is a complete and utter joke.  What you have here are two criminals who both have vested interests in the current set up, the nigerian kleptocrats wish to continue stealing from their own people and the western IOC's wish to have access to cheap oil - you scratch my back i scratch yours.

lemur:
Thanks for your post cap28.

I was just doing some research and I can confirm that you are correct on many of the points you listed. However, a few amendments:

1. There are actually only 3 Shell companies actively operating in Nigeria: SPDC (the mother company), SNEPCo (the shell company that operates the offshore Bonga field) and a relatively small operation Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) which largely handles gas supplies to the domestic market.
2. SPDC is indeed owned based on the formula you listed and both funding of its operations and profit sharing is done based on the ownership structure. However, they only share profit after the federation has taken rotalties and taxes and the cost of all licenses go to the federation, and is not shared as you stated. Shell is the operator though.
3. While SPDC is a joint venture, SNEPCo is also a joint venture with Shell owning the majority of shares and maybe just Exxon Mobil owing a few more. SNG is fully owned by Shell it seems.

It thus means that whatever we accuse Shell of, we must remember that the FGN is their partner in this.
thanks Lemur, and your amendments are noted.

You are right the FGN are culpable in the blatant ra;pe and exploitation of the nigerian people, however the culpability is shared - shell and the FGN have collaborated in the economic and envionmntal destruction of nigeria.

just to add to my post:

shell nigeria or shell petroleum development company (spdc) comprises the following companies:

shell nigeria exploration and production co

shell nigeria gas

shell nigeria oil products

which are all jointly owned by the british and dutch.

In addition shell has a 25.6 % stake in nigeria liquified natural gas (NLNG)
the nigerian govt has a 49% stake, Total has a 15% stake and Eni 10.4 %

Does anyone have an idea about the ownership structure of the Shell venture in Nigeria? Out of all our oil that they produce, how much goes to government and how much to Shell and others in partnership with them?
shell nigeria is a subsidiary of royal dutch shell which is jointly owned by the british and dutch.

Its nigeria operations are known as shell nigeria - it carries out its operations by way of a joint venture with NNPC.

NNPC as you know is owned by the FGN - the FGN has a 55% stake in the joint venture arrangement, shell has 30%, Total (France)10% and Eni (italian) 5% .

Which means that the nigerian govt receives 55% of all rents, royalties and licence fees in respect of oil exploration.

I have already explained above the royal family's links with the international banking elite, if you want to educate yourself you can go and research more on that issue.

Nobody is dragging racism into the discussion - all i did was state a fact which is well known to most informed people ie that - the royal family are supporters of fascist and racist ideologies - they were supporters of hitler's nazi germany during world war 2 - the fact that you do not know this indicates that you are the one that is walking around in a haze of ignorance.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-379036/Prince-Philip-pictured-Nazi-funeral.html

Prince Phillip - the queen's husband was a member of the Hitler Youth movement when he was a boy, and his inlaws were all senior ranking members of the Nazi Party.

http://american_almanac.tripod.com/naziroot.htm

Despite knowing nothing about the background of the british royal family you jump to their defence, isnt that the sort of behaviour which is normally associated with stu.pidity?

the british royal family are of german origin and changed their surname to windsor in order to be accepted by the british during the nazi onslaught against britain in world war 2. -their original surname was saxe coburg which is a german name.

Also the queen's father King George vi and her uncle - edward viii (who abdicated the throne)  were very close friends of Hitler and beleived in Hitlers philosophy of the uber mensch (super man or master race),  the belief that the pure blooded nordic or northern european people were destined to rule the world.

I assume you do know that Hitler beleived in eugenics ie race hygiene or the genocide of the so called lower races in order to guarantee the aryan race world wide domination?
