The Lagos Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has secured the conviction and sentencing of an internet fraudster, Olaniyi Ogungbaiye, before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos. The convict was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on receiving stolen property and fraudulently obtained property contrary to Section 328 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.Upon his arraignment, Olaniyi pleaded not guilty to the offence, thereby leading to his trial. During the trial, which commenced on June 8, 2020, the prosecution counsel, Franklin Ofoma, called three witnesses to prove the guilt of the defendant.Led in evidence by Ofoma, the first prosecution witness, PW1, Ayotunde Awoyemi, a foreign national Investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, told the court that in October 2018, the FBI and EFCC carried out a joint operation code-named ‘operation wire wire’,......following receipt of several petitions alleging the criminal activities of Olaniyi Ogungbaiye, Babatunde Oseifa and Lanre Moet.He told the court that in the email addresses of Olaniyi and Moet, there were conversations wherein Olaniyi told Moet about some mystery shoppers’ scam he carried out in the past and how to set the same up and get victims. In his further testimony, Awoyemi added that the convict defrauded unsuspecting victims of over Nine Million Naira. In his testimony, the second prosecution witness, Ariyo Murtala, an operative with the EFCC, told the court that following the petition by the FBI on the activities of Olaniyi, his team commenced investigation and wrote letters of investigation to Guaranty Trust Bank, GTB......and the response received showed that Olaniyi sent out over Four Hundred Million Naira to Freebony, a Bureau De Change, BDC operator, which prompted his arrest by the EFCC. The prosecution also tendered documents to further prove its case.Upon completion of trial, Justice Taiwo, on December 17, 2020, ruled that the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubts and found Olaniyi guilty as charged. The Judge sentenced him to five years imprisonment on the first count of the charge and three years on the second count. The convict was also ordered to forfeit the sum of N9,504,904,096 (Nine Million, Five Hundred and Four Thousand, Nine Hundred and Four Naira, Six Kobo) and a Four Wing Duplex to the Federal Government of Nigeria. https://twitter.com/officialEFCC/status/1377709580864618505?s=19

Phred1717:EFCC are not the one's responsible for the arrest of bandits, go and tag Nigerian Army on Twitter. |
Let me give you some instances. Many are dropout from school, they don't have any skills. A boy of 16 to 19yrs who's still in the University or secondary school are into it. How's that unemployment? Many people bribe their way out of school, they have nothing upstairs. Many will have the opportunity to leave Nigeria to a better place like you mentioned above, they will still go into fraud? Re we to blame Nig government for that too? Now if government are to provide Jobs. Can those dropouts who are already exposed to lavish life style work in a factory or farm as menial workers? Many of them have nothing to offer, they carry laptop around and can't even operate it to the fullest. I advised one to start a Uber business since he has raised money from his scam to buy a car. He refused. Unemployment is out there no doubt.. |
notym2chektym:How many have you seen? |

It was during my NYSC, a guy came to us after cds that he wants to join our yahoo gang. We told him bros we re not yahoo abeg o. Guess why? Cuz we normally dress well despite that it's the same khaki given to us we all wear to CDS. Bad youth spoiling the good ones are to be blamed. The percentage of Yahoo boys among the youth are not upto 30% . It's because the Yahoo guys are noisy that's we think all the youth are into it. |
Na dem sabi. |
grossintel:Do you know many Americans don't have $10,000? Do you know 4 to 5 Million can get you 2 to 3 cars to start Uber business? Some people end up sounding stup^d when trying to defend what is not right. I hate people with criminal mindset like yours.. |
Sm guys here talk say na because of poverty and lack of Jobs. Person wey don make 4 to 5Million for scam no gree stop. M not promoting fraud . Just saying it's not because of lack of job. It's greed. |

EFCC should create a database where employers, embassies, schools can check names of fraudsters. Maybe this will bring back a bit sanity to the society. For those that will blame government for crime, i pray these scammers wipe your immediate families lifesaving and give em HBP or stroke. No justification for Crime. Death to all scammers and corrupt politicians . |
christistruth01:Don't mind him. If ojukwu can flee with all his soldiers and bomb. Who's mr Sunday? No one can defeat the government. |
InvestinOwerri:Protecting our people is not bad. That's why the SW governors created Amotekun. Yorubaland affairs is not a one man show. |
To those clamouring for war and break up, we don't want any form of war again in Nigeria. Biafra war was full with regrets and sorrow, we can't afford to follow that path again. War destroys communities and families and often disrupts the development of the social and economic fabric of nations. The effects of war include long-term physical and psychological harm to children and adults, as well as reduction in material and human capital. Why should we fight a war that we won't achieve the aim of the war. After Biafra war we still have a country called Nigeria. To those of you shouting war. Pray you don't see one.. |
If the token you bought is giving you a reject message on the meter . Contact EEDC to give you the new tariff code to re-program the meter |
God has seen your pure heart. She lost a great opportunity just because of petty scam. God will surely reward you since your heart is clean towards her... That Yahoo boyfriend of hers will surely use her for ritual... |
charlesucheh:A criminal will always find a way to justify crime. Two lives were lost and you are typing this nonsense. If it was your family member that died during the robbery will you remember to type this? Trying to sound wise but end up sounding like a f00l. |
Amb1045:Is government the owner of wema bank? The way some people reason eh. E go show say dem be thief. Blaming government for everything. |
tot:She's right. U are shameless thief.. Do you know how those people you guys normally scam feel? If you have a business and some one stole all your capital and profit will you be happy. There's no justification for Crime... |
Why are some igbo women wicked? News like this always emerge from the Eastern part of the country. |
optionalY09:EFCC is used to fight southerners? Lol. I won't say much, go check people who are there in EFCC HQ in Kano and co. The Numbers of properties seized by Efcc in Kano alone not to talk of other Northern states. I can't argue further since you believed EFCC is used to fight the Southerners with the level of your education. |
optionalY09:51b? N you believed that? |
