We often forget that tyres are the sole point of contact between your car and the road. Therefore, the condition of tyres is vital to our safety while driving. A well-maintained set of tyres will also indicate that they are in great shape which improves the performance of the vehicle. We have provided guidelines to ensure that your tyres are in good condition. 1. Tyre replacement What’s the ideal moment to replace your old tyre with a brand new one? A tyre needs to be replaced prior to the time when the tread depth falls below the tread depth that is recommended (Generally, 1.4mm for wet conditions). You may also see the tread wear indicator on your tyre, which will inform you if the tread is worn out. According to experts, a tyre should not be used for longer than 10 years in any case, regardless of the number of kilometres travelled because tyres get older and this impacts the reliability and increases the chance of failure. 2. Checking the pressure of the Tyre It is also necessary to have the pressure of your tyres checked every week. It is vital to maintain the pressure of the tyres at the levels suggested by the manufacturer. A properly inflated tyre reduces the chance of losing control over the vehicle and avoids irregular wear that could arise from overinflation or underinflation. 3. Rotation of the tyre Since tyres deteriorate with age and also wear out, it is essential to get in the spare tyre and turn the tyres in order to even wear every 10,000km. The first rotation is crucial since it sets the scene for wear on tyres. Rotating the tyres every now and then will ensure that all tyres share the load equally and that no tyre is exposed to excessive or underexposure. It is also crucial to have the alignment checked. One indication that the vehicle requires alignment can be seen when the car starts to pull towards the other side. It is best to get the alignment done prior to when you spot the signs, you can have it done every 15,000km, and also after you change the tires or wheels. 4. Tyre rim Make sure to wash the rim of your tyre to prevent it from getting covered in dust and dirt. Also, ensure there aren’t obvious bends in the rim. Additionally, the rim valve hole should be straight and smooth. 5. Take care using the Jack It is highly recommended to make use of the hydraulic car jack since it is a reliable tool and will ensure the safety of the vehicle. If a hydraulic jack isn’t in use then a standard jack offered by the manufacturer of your car should be used. Check that the base on which the punctured tire is replaced is firm and flat. 6. Valve care Valve caps and valve valves are crucial as they protect the tyres against dirt and dust particles. Make sure they are in good order to ensure an airtight seal as well as the correct pressure for tyres. 7. Alloys and Tyres If you’re looking to buy alloys for your vehicle it is recommended to measure the original tyre’s circumference. Properly fitted alloys with properly fitted tyres are considered to be more efficient. 8. Tread depth The tread’s thickness should be about 1.6mm. Replace the tyres in case it’s lower. This is vital for stable stopping, cornering, and high-speed driving. 9. Driving Smoothly The forceful braking process reduces the life span of the tyre, which causes premature damage and wear. It is important to drive at a consistent speed and to avoid frequent brakes. If you speed up and apply brakes frequently, it will lead to skidding off the tyre, which results in the tread on the tyre becoming worn more quickly. 10. Storage of Tyres The tyres should be stored in a dry and cool location away from sunlight or heat, as well as ozone sources like hot pipes or electric motors. Make sure the surface is free of grease, fuel or other substances that could cause damage to the rubber. It is also advised to wear gloves to protect yourself when dealing with the tyres. https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/how-to-take-care-of-your-tyres-with-these-simple-tips/

Every sit-at-home day in the South East comes with heightened tension and fear in the minds of citizens. The level of insecurity and violent activities within this region has left many disheartened. While states in the South East have to live with the constant fear of the unknown Gunmen, another situation that grows fear in the heart and minds of people in the East is the violence associated with the Monday sit-at-home orders. As many try to abide by the sudden sit-at-home orders that have become a way of life in the East, car owners and drivers constantly fear losing their cars and experiencing death these days. So, the resolution has become ensuring to sit at home. While there are high compliance rates to the orders, once in a while, someone falls victim. And, at the core of it are car owners and drivers. Does The Failure To Comply With A Sit-at-Home Order Result In Destruction & Violence? Sometime in September 2021, a bus driver whose identity remains unidentified was burnt alive at Oboma Nguru Mbaise. The incident happened on a sit-at-home day while the bus loaded with passengers came from Owerri. Passengers were asked to alight the bus before it was set on fire. Alongside the bus, a truck heading to Owerri was set ablaze by the armed task force at Ahiara junction, Mbaise. While the sit-at-home situation in Eastern Nigeria is gradually nearing a year, it’s been one rife with violence, damage, and loss of lives, of which most of them go undocumented. On Monday, April 11th, the official sit-at-home day, another violent car burning and the killing situation took place in the East. This time, Enugu state was the scene. Two persons and a Toyota Sienna bus were burnt in Enugu state by armed men identified as part of a task force for the sit-at-home exercise. The open fire ensued at the Holy Ghost Park Enugu at 8 am. The driver of the burnt Sienna bus escaped unhurt but, while narrating the incident, recounts that he was standing a few meters away from his bus while he waited for passengers to load into the vehicle. At first, he thought they were armed robbers, so he ran away. But, it turned out that the armed men that approached in a minibus were a sit-at-home task force. By the time he came out, the damage was already done, and his vehicle was in flames. Reportedly, two passengers at the park were hit by a stray bullet during the open fire at the park. This case of loss of lives and vehicles due to slight violation of sit-at-home orders, which is already crippling the social and economic situation in the East, continues to go unaddressed as there’s no one to hold accountable for the bloodshed and damages. Although, as Nigerians, people living in Eastern Nigeria have to worry about their lives and belongings, every Monday has become an extra day to carry more fear and worry in their hearts. https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/killing-and-car-burning-new-way-to-ensure-sit-at-home-in-eastern-nigeria/

If there’s one thing about Nigerians, they never run out of innovative ideas. Several Nigerians are modifying worn-out cars into exotic rides or building car models from scratch. Indeed, with adequate resources, access, and support, Nigeria could spearhead automobile innovations in the continent. The Man Who Transformed An Old Car To a 2016 Mercedes Benz Several photos appeared online of a Nigerian man who has transformed an old car into an exotic 2016 Mercedes Benz. The shared images have attracted the attention and admiration of many Nigerians. In the picture, the car used to be worn out. But, the unidentified man, who works as an automobile mechanic, turned it into something almost entirely unbelievable. The transformed car is painted white, which gives it the look of a brand new whip. Although this image surfaced on the internet and has drawn much attention, it’s not the first time Nigerians have transformed an automobile. The Keke Seat Looking Like The Inside Of An SUV Earlier this year, a picture of a Keke seat transformed to look like the inside of an SUV surfaced on social media. It quickly drew a lot of attention. With the picture, there’s hope that the designer will do more in the automobile interior if given a chance. The Youth Corper That Rebranded An Old Mazda During the lockdown in 2020, a Youth Corper, Oladele Ogbeyemi, rebranded an old Mazda into something completely different. According to him, he covered the cost using six months of his NYSC allowance. The Young Nigerian Man That Turned A Toyota Venza Into A Rolls Royce Another automobile transformation story that drew praise was a few months ago. Nonso Offor, an indigene of Anambra, showed off how he reconstructed a Toyota Venza into a Rolls Royce. How Can These Young Automobile Designers Be Empowered? One might wonder if there are any available resources and support to empower such creativity in the country. In 2019, Jelani Aliyu, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, NADDC, revealed plans to initiate an automotive design challenge for young Nigerians. In 2020, this project led Mr Jelani Aliyu to meet Abdullahi Aliyu Waziri, a young automobile designer in Sokoto. According to Mr Jelani Aliyu, a project challenge is an annual event. Still, there’s yet more information to determine how much the project will restructure the face of automobile design and building in the country. https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/meet-various-times-nigerians-who-transformed-old-and-worn-out-vehicles-into-exotic-rides/

The mention of the phrase “unknown gunmen” immediately ignites fear and terror in the minds of any Nigerian. While some regions of the country have been experiencing cases of unrest and insecurity, Eastern Nigeria is another place that is building dread in the minds of car users and travellers. While unknown gunmen have become prevalent in Eastern Nigeria, some parts of the East feel the terror and pressure more than others. Aguata/Orumba Axis of Anambra State, the boundary between Anambra and Imo State, has become the dwelling spot for their operations. In late February, a Nigerian man, Melie Ajuluchuku, took to social media to warn road users, drivers, and car owners about this new death spot within Orsumoghu-Azia-Ihiala road. He says, “Danger, Keep off Ukpor-Lilu-Orsumoghu-Azia-Mbosi Road, in Anambra State, it is a death trap.” He continues to recount how his brother-in-law, Chief Gab Ofoma (Ojemba Enweilo Nnewi), was gunned down in cold blood as his driver made a detour (due to traffic) from the Onitsha-Owerri highway en route to Port Harcourt. This area is a danger zone where unknowing drivers and travellers fall prey to the gunmen. Last Saturday, a Joint Task Force formed by the Nigerian Army and Navy led a raid into this danger zone, which resulted in the raid of the alleged hideout of the gunmen. During this operation, several items were recovered, including stolen vehicles, charms, and food items. The raid also resulted in the burning down of a stationed bulldozer serving as a block to the camp’s entrance. As though that exacerbated the rage of these gunmen, On Sunday, a church driver conveying members to Anambra fell prey to these gunmen. The driver, who survived the attack and preferred to be addressed as Sunny, gave an account of his experience. “The encounter was along the Aguata/Orumba Axis. We were headed to an Anglican church in Anambra state when the gunmen violently stopped our vehicle. “I was led out of my car and into a deep bush while the church members riding with me were led somewhere else by some of the gunmen. “I was led at gunpoint to see the leader of the gunmen. On getting there, the place was filled with several charms, weapons, and Indian hemp. I was asked to provide ₦150,000, which I fearfully told them I only had ₦150 in my pocket. At that moment, I felt it’d become the end of me. “After a long time of calmly explaining that we were en route to a church in Anambra, we were released but not without a warning to not return to this route. I couldn’t believe we left scot-free because not many people have passed through this ordeal without experiencing harm.” There’s no telling when this unrest will cease in Eastern Nigeria, but while it persists, drivers and road users are seriously abstaining from this area. https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/have-some-part-of-eastern-nigeria-become-danger-zone-for-the-vehicle-owners/

Just like how humans grow yearly and get to a stage where they can no longer do some particular tasks, cars have their lifespans. There comes a time when it no longer suits the purpose in which it was made and it becomes inevitable to change your car. At such times, you realise that the car no longer meets your professional, personal and lifestyle needs. It could be that the car is just no longer safe for you to drive and you have no choice but to get rid of it. It could even be that the car is just too old and you have advanced to a stage whereby you can get yourself a better and higher grade model. Whatever the reason, remember that when driving, safety should never be taken for granted or jeopardised. Therefore, if you discover the following signs on your car, you will be doing yourself a world of favour by changing your car instead of repairing it at expensive costs: Car repairers are starting to charge more than the Car’s Value: It is easy to get attached to a car that has served you incredibly well for years. However, the truth is that once the cost of repairs exceeds the current market value of the car, it is a top sign that you need to change your car. Bad Fuel Economy: In an economy such as Nigeria, this is also a top sign that you have to change your car. If the fuel economy is so poor and the car keeps failing. On a daily basis, the car market is constantly getting populated with cars that are more fuel-efficiency and even come at a lower price. You will, therefore, do yourself a financial disservice by keeping the old car that continues to take you back to the petrol station and your mechanic. The Check Engine Light is Always On: If this happens to your car regularly, it means that the sign may not be available to warn you when your car genuinely develops a serious issue since it is always coming on randomly. If the light changes with every bump in the road, then it is a sign to change the car. Also, if the engine block cracks, it could be a sign as well. This will continue to gulp your money in the long run. It is a sign that your car’s structural integrity has been compromised and would require repairs upon repairs with the passage of time. The Spare Parts Are Hard to Find: You don’t even have to be told this to realise your car is too old and needs changing. A car that is very old will not have spare parts in the market any longer. This is because a car with unavailable spare parts will mean expensive repairs and safety concerns. The Exhaust Pipe produces visible smoke that causes pollution: Have you ever seen those danfo buses on the road with lots of smoke coming out from their exhaust pipes? It means that their vehicles need changing and this is what could happen when you use your car for too long. This may be fixed, but if it is a recurring issue with your car and you cover a lot of miles with it, it is better you take the car off the road for your health and for the sake of other road users. Your mind is not at peace with your safety when using the car: You know your car is extremely old when you can’t even take it for a drive without having fears. Do you feel you cannot drive at certain highway speeds because you fear that your car may fail? Do the brakes require a ‘process’ before engaging them? These are signs that must not be ignored. They point to the overall conclusion that your car is no longer safe for travelling. The Trunk cannot open or Doors cannot close well: This is a common problem with cars that are due for a change. It may sound ridiculous, but some people hold on to their cars until almost everything around the engine and transmission is almost falling apart. While some, the car will begin to accumulate rust, which then affects other parts. Car rust spreads and begins interfering with the integrity of your car. So, if you are already losing chunks of metal do yourself a good one by finding a car that suits your needs and lifestyle and change the car. Breaking up with your favourite car may prove to be a tough decision even when it has shown obvious signs that it is no longer the car you once fell in love with but no matter how attached you are to your car, once it starts showing signs that border on safety, it is time to let go. This will save you money and stress and give you the peace of mind that a car that constantly breaks down car steals from you. https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/top-warning-signs-that-show-it-is-time-to-let-go-of-your-favourite-car/

The acting police Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that documents such as vehicle licence, driver’s licence, and certificate of insurance, especially for private car owners are the documents that need to be shown to the police on demand at any checkpoint or on routine patrol. This was stated via the official Twitter handle Sunday morning. “Any policeman demanding for more is a deviant and he must be dealt with. If not, many Nigerians will suffer from him and his likes. Don’t die in silence, speak out to save yourself and others. I will still be on this issue soon,” he tweeted. “No policeman should demand your customs papers. No. Except they are on joint operation, but not just on mere routine checks. And for now, we have suspended the issuance of tinted glass permits, so we don’t expect our men to disturb Nigerians on this.” Adejobi further noted that the police are to stop any vehicle with tints, search the vehicles, and its occupants, but not delay the driver for not having tinted glass permits. “Report them if you are so delayed so that we ask them questions,” he wrote on the microblogging platform. “Please take note that police don’t demand allocation of number papers, it is not necessary, since a vehicle has been registered, all you need to have with you as mentioned are vehicle licence, certificate of insurance and driver’s licence. Simple.” https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/three-documents-cars-owners-must-tender-to-police-in-nigeria/ |

The Senate has called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, declare a State of Emergency on the nation’s federal roads. These were resolutions reached on Tuesday by the Senate, following a point of order raised to draw its attention to the increase in airfare and the implication for Nigerian roads. The upper chamber also urged the federal government to immediately make good its indebtedness to FERMA in order to enable the agency to carry out its primary responsibility of rehabilitating federal roads, especially in the face of the astronomical increase in airfares. Rising under Orders 41 and 51 of the Senate Standing Rules, Senator Gershom Bassey (PDP Cross River) lamented that local airfares in Nigeria have risen by 63 per cent in response to a spike in the price of aviation fuel and the attendant cost of operation. According to him, the rise in airfare has pegged the minimum Economy Class ticket at around N80,000 for travellers buying a one-hour, one-way economy ticket. He expressed worry that the increase in airfares would increase the pressure on the neglected and dilapidated Nigerian roads and further worsen their state. The lawmaker noted that the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had a budgetary approval of just 20 per cent of the funds the agency requires for the rehabilitation of about 35,000km of federal roads in 2022. Senator Bassey observed that the sum of about N850 billion naira that is to accrue to FERMA by virtue of the 5 per cent User charge on the pump price of petrol, diesel and international vehicle transit charges provided for in Section 14 of FERMA (Amendment) Act No.18 of 2007 is still being owed FERMA by the Federal Government. https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/senate-declares-state-of-emergency-on-nigerian-roads-over-hike-in-airfares/

It can be scary to find your temperature gauge shift from normal to red while driving. It is even scarier to suddenly start seeing steam coming out from under the hood of your car. When this situation happens, the most probable explanation is that your car is overheating. Car overheating is a common problem experienced by most Nigerian drivers. The situation is more frequent with older cars than with newer models. When your car overheats, it could lead to great damage if the right care and action are not taken immediately. Many people are ignorant of the causes of car overheating or even know what to do when this happens. Panicking won’t solve the problem. In this article, we take a look at the common causes of car overheating and simple tips to fix it. What Makes A Car Overheating When a car overheats, it is actually the engine overheating. This happens when the heat generated by the engine is more than the normal operating temperature. Usually, there is a cooling system in a vehicle that serves to maintain its standard operating temperature by circulating coolant or antifreeze through the engine to the radiator. Car overheating can occur if the engine generates more heat than the cooling system is able to handle. Or if there are faults with one or more components of the cooling system needed to maintain the engine at standard operating temperature. COMMON CAUSES OF CAR OVERHEATING Leaks in the coolant system The coolant system needs antifreeze or coolant to do its work. The coolant reservoir tank is not meant to be empty at any point. However, in cases where the tank is empty, it might be caused by leaks. Car owners need to be observant about this. Leaks in the coolant system can be observed by spots or puddles on the ground. Damaged Water Pump The water pump is an important component of the coolant system of a car. It serves to circulate the coolant to all parts of the engine. The water pump can become damaged if the coolant is dirty or has lots of buildups that hinder free flow. When this happens, the car can begin to overheat. Too Little Or No Coolant Sometimes, drivers are unaware of the coolant levels in their cars. Without the proper levels of coolant, you might be creating problems for the coolant system of your car, and consequently making the engine overheat. Always ensure the coolant level in your car is at the manufacturer’s recommended levels. Thermostat Failure The thermostat in a car is meant to regulate the engine temperature. Thermostat failure can result in irregularities in the engine temperature thus not allowing the coolant to flow as intended by the car manufacturer. Damages To The Belts And Hoses In instances where the belts and hoses connecting the coolant are broken, ruptured or leaking; the flow of the coolant or antifreeze to maintain the normal temperature of the engine is affected. Issues With The Radiator The radiator and its fan are crucial in maintaining the engine’s temperature by reducing the coolant temperature. When the fans are damaged, it affects the radiator capacity to reduce heat, this causing car overheating. Insufficient Engine Oil Oil helps in lubricating the moving parts of a car, including the engine. Too little leads to friction which can contribute to engine overheating. HOW TO FIX ENGINE OVERHEATING Don’t Panic Yes, we understand the situation might feel scary, especially if this is your first time experiencing vehicle overheating. But, you have to pull yourself together. Steam coming out of your engine doesn’t mean your car is one fire. Pull Over Once you notice the usual smell and fumes coming out from the engine compartment of your vehicle, the wisest thing to do is to pull over and assess the situation. Open All The Windows. If your AC is on, you will have to put it off at this point. Roll down the window of your car to allow as much heat to flow out as possible. Turn Off The Engine And Don’t Open The Hood Immediately Once you have pulled over, it might be risky to open the hood immediately especially if there is steam buildup. This could potentially damage your skin. Turn off the engine and allow the car to rest for a few minutes. After that, you can open the hood. Call Your Mechanic. If there are potential damages, you might need to call your mechanic to help you. Check For Coolant Levels In most cases, low or too little coolant levels is the cause of overheating. You might need to top up the coolant level to recommended standards. TIPS TO PREVENT YOUR VEHICLE FROM OVERHEATING Here are basic tips to stop your vehicle from overheating: Observe your vehicle’s coolant levels as often as possible. Keep an extra bottle of new antifreeze and a gallon of water in your trunk always. Keep an eye on your car’s thermostat as you’re driving Refer to the vehicle owner’s manual to stay up-to-date on coolant service flushes https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/car-overheating-common-causes-and-how-to-fix-it/

Toyota Corolla is arguably one of the most popularly driven cars around the world. It has won the hearts of many due to its superb reliability and affordability. However, Toyota Corolla has its quirks and challenges. It will be good for you as an owner or potential owner to be aware of this so that you can be prepared. Or perhaps, choose to buy another vehicle. Toyota Corolla Reliability When it comes to reliability, the Toyota Corolla is one of the best you can find in the market. According to RepairPal, the Toyota Corolla scored 4.0 out of 5, making the 8th position out of 32 vehicles in its category. The Corolla has the ability to maintain steady performance through years of regular use. There is a standard 5-year/100,000 miles on the Toyota Corolla. To enjoy your Corolla for a long time, it’s important you maintain and service it regularly. In addition, the Corolla has a good resale value following years of use. This makes it budget-friendly and economical for many customers. Common Problems Of The Toyota Corolla Here are the common problems associated with different Toyota Corolla year models: The Engine Starting Slowly Starting problems are quite prevalent in various Corolla vehicles. Many owners have reported that their Corolla’s engine starts slowly or won’t even crank up. This was the major challenge with the 2015 Toyota Corolla model. Models between 1990-2014 had few reported problems along this line. This situation is usually common at about 100,000 – 250,000 miles. Starter failure is often the major cause of this problem. And it can be corrected by a starter solenoid replacement or a total replacement of the whole starter system. Other causes of slow engine start include the weak or corroded battery, clogged fuel filter, dead battery etc. A visit to your mechanic can help accurately diagnose the cause. Problems With The Evap System Leading To Check Engine Light On 1998 to 2016 Toyota Corolla models have a commonly reported problem with the Evaporative emission (EVAP) system. Defects in the evaporative emission system result in the lit of the Check Engine Light. Diagnosing the cause of this problem can be tricky. Common causes include faulty gas caps or a charcoal canister failure. If you observe any issues with your EVAP system, make haste to consult a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis of the problem. Failure to correct this problem as soon as possible could lead to further damage to your Toyota Corolla. Steering Drift Many owners of the 2010 and 2009 Toyota Corolla model frequently reported steering drift issues. The complaints drew the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which therefore prompted a quick investigation. Results from this investigation found out that stock calibration within the electronic power steering system affected on-centre steering. Toyota Corolla owners who suffered this problem had difficulty efficiently handling their Corolla. To resolve the issue, Toyota released a technical service bulletin for an optional recalibrated EPS electronic control unit that improved the on-centre steering feel. Problems With The Airbags Quite a number of Toyota Corolla year models had issues with the airbag, such that there were a lot of recall cases. 2003-2013 Toyota Corolla was recalled in 2019 for a possible airbag inflator explosion, which could cause injury to passengers by shooting small pieces of metals at them. Similarly, in 2014, Toyota Corolla produced between the years 2009-2010, were recalled because of an improperly placed Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). The FFC, if damaged, could deactivate the airbag, thus rendering it useless. 2010-2013 Toyota Corolla were recalled in 2013 due to challenges with the frontal airbags which wouldn’t deploy when needed because of untested passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration. That same year, 2003-2004 Corollas were recalled for faulty supplemental restraint system (SRS) circuits. Faulty SRS circuits have the potential to unnecessarily trigger airbags when not needed. Defective Mass Air Flow Sensor Defective mass airflow sensor reported in the 1998-2010 Toyota Corolla has the potential to trigger drag in acceleration, which can negatively affect the vehicle’s overall performance. If left unattended, the defective mass airflow sensor could also trigger the Check Engine Light. The solution to this is to have the sensor cleaned or totally replaced. Consult with a qualified mechanic to know which option is best for you. Problems With A Transmission Problems with the transmission system can be very annoying, and also dangerous if left unattended. In the worst cases, users have reported that their transmission totally failed in the middle of the road. This usually begins with an unusual grinding noise, which continues for a while until the transmission total gives way. To avoid accidents and crashes, consult your mechanic as soon as possible when you notice defects in the transmission. CONCLUSION Like every other vehicle, the Toyota Corolla is prone to various problems and issues. Notwithstanding, it remains a car that boasts reliability, affordability, and durability. https://www.carmart.ng/public/blog/toyota-corolla-reliability-and-common-problems/
