dru23: My brother if I tell you ....I understand ordinary Nigerians very well too well ,from personal stories to stories from others.. Let me tell you my own story ....story story story story o.... I started investing in Nigerian in the early 2000.. This is when the Lagos government was developing Ajar, lekki and sand filling the area. So I decided to invest in Tipper business and bought about 7 Mack dump truck within a period of 2 years. Mack trucks were cheaper during those times. It cost about 550k naira to clear a 20ft ton dump truck at that time ,now is about close to 1 million .
So I called my childhood friend and I explain to him what I wanted to do . So we set up a company and I made him a business partner. I gave him 40% of the company and I kept 60% of it . Long story short that business was a disaster, my friend could not manage the business, he complain that he needed a car to monitor the drivers. I bought him a car tokunbo car ,but stories kept coming, he couldnt account for the money , I went through hell during those period, because I collected loan for those trucks .... It got to a point that I had to get my family involve, for me to collect my leftover trucks. When my family found out I was mocked at and made fun at. I was told that you don't leave a business with Nigerians and expect things to go well. This your friends has never struggle for money before, how do you want expect a person that has never made a million naira before to handle that type of money . And at the time those trucks were delivering about 50k naira a day . Each truck delivering 50k naira a day times 7 ,you do the math..
So my family now got involve, before that I had to pay for a lawyer and he was arrested ..He slept in Jail for three days .. Than is older brother had to bail him out and sign an undertaken to resolve the issues. So when both family sat down to discuss the situation.. They ask him where are the trucks ? He said he sold them all and spend the money etc .. So the family said they will settle for 1million naira to give me .. Which is nothing, that 1million naira took about 1 year plus for them to pay. It got to a point that they stop paying money and I arrange for him to get locked up again. So in order not to give their mother high blood pressure and avoid policemen embarrassing them at their homes again. The two older brothers finally paid their last installment.
Now a lot of you guys might say this. That the guy was new into the business and there are Challenges in starting a new business etc. But few things that I found out during those period .. I will not get into details, but I hire an investigator to monitor him .. Stories were getting to me that this guy got a girl pregnant and had two kids etc . Which he didn't tell me , when he was dating his baby mama he bought her things clothes and showered her with gifts etc. He was known around the area has a big boy . He was telling people that he owns the business etc . And I was told he will just enter bar and pay for drinks for everyone.. They said the boy was a big boy o .
The one thing that made me to take action before I hired someone to spy on him .. Facebook .... Out of boredom I starting looking at his Facebook page. I saw in posted up chilling in clubs drinking and enjoying himself but mean while, his friends were telling me that this guy spends money anyhow .. He was the talk of town and he was a big boy o .. He was still in his middle to late 20's during this period.....
After the whole situation I had to lick my wounds like a wounded lion. I had to figure out how to pay back my loans and deal with the embarrassment. Before it to police matter I beg him to return my trucks. He kept coming with excuses , I spoke to the older brothers that I don't want my family to know about this. But nobody took me seriously, because I was not in Nigeria.
I had to use my connects and spy to monitor him and get him arrested. When his family house got raided by five policemen. His older brother now knew that I meant business.. They were surprise how a guy that stays in the USA was able to pull this thing off .. It was a huge embarrassment for the family ..
And doing the arrest period ,I had a lawyer standby. And before any of his family could bail him out he had to write a statement about what happen, which he than admitted that he sold all my trucks.. They family couldnt do nothing.. The brothers had to stand for his bail ,before that my lawyer made sure that she knows the addresses of his brother and work place . This whole drama was like a made for tv drama. Now till now the guys still stays with his mommy and he can't hold a job.. I was told by another source that he needs my help since am into the uber business. I told that source that I will think about and get back to him.
But as the saying goes ... " Fool me once shame on you , but fool twice shame on me ."
Conclusion: Mr. Mayor555 trust me I know how ordinary Nigerian behaves, I have experience and seen all those behaviors myself. And I have watched others go through worse.. @Mayo555 people like you will never understand people like me , but I don't expect you to.. But I clearly understand people like you .. You have never walked a mile in my shoes ... And after that incident I got to know dru23... |

In the Lagos state traffic law... Commerical vehicle isnt defined as to what COMMERCIAL entails. Fashola enacted the law ... Ambode visited the law and added only driving options for motorcycles which should b 250cc above. |

sexylassie:
1- Yes Yellow buses do have LAsdri because they are commercial buses BIG LIE
2-It is not a crime to ride share but know they when you start to ride share your private car for cash, you have now commercialize it, if arrested when picking up passegers, you will be asked for permit to operate a commercial vehicle... drivers of commercial buses and taxis are also tax payers. Wrong - no law says u cannot pick and charge who enters your car. Pls if you have that law bring it forward. Note: every word has to be based on the law in the state
yes, people have been ride sharing before uber all over the world but they needed a permit to operate, even private taxi operators in lagos before uber needed a permit to operate. It was never the govt that went against people using their private cars but the taxi union - Govt has played that part of involvement in transportation to the road unions
Best approach will be for Uber and others to come clean and tell the government that they are taxi operators and get the necessary permit instead of claiming they are connecting people. all uber and others stubbornness and deceit will lead to the suffering of drivers on their platform, lagos government has leverage, uber are at their mercy no mattter what they print on paper. they will have to bow down to government at the end of the tussle. Wrong approach again...that I develop an application that allows u ride-share doesnt make me a taxi service. We should embrace technology rather than find a way to roll the country backwards. |

sexylassie: 1-Vio can arrest Uber drivers if they dont have the necessary permit like hackney permit, they are empowered by the law because it is the duty of VIO to check commercial drivers like uber driver and others for Hackney/stage carriage permit 2-LASTMA can check if you have expired driving license and impound your car ( Driving without Valid Vehicle License LCG-13 2 5, 000 Impound Vehicle) 3-Police can also check your drivers license and arrest you if you dont have any, they can also arrest you for breaking traffic laws and over speeding.
know your laws. The Lagos state traffic law was brought into existence during Fashola era when Lagos state lost at the courts against the transport union. The court stated that lagos govt can not enforce witout an existing traffic law. The push to clampdown or enforce revenue E-hailing is one that should be looked at carefully. |

know your laws. Then the law states an approved color scheme for all commercial. So will we then say E-hailing will go Yellow (color of Lagos commerical) |

sexylassie: Trends and the future of ehailing business in Lagos state is all in the newspaper, any smart driver can gather all these info and see the future of ehailing in lagos state but many drivers here are short sighted instead of preparing for the future.
some drivers think that government officials are reading uber threads on Nairaland to create anti-ehailing laws..No, governmant oficials do not have time for that, they follow trends in other cities outside Nigeria to regulate the e-hailing business.
Uber and others has no operator license, the Lagos state government, under the Road Traffic Regulations on Taxi Operations, said that all taxi operators must get a license, classifying ride hailing operators under it. until when uber gets their operator lincense before Lagos state government starts taking them serious.
What ever you call yourself, ehailing or uber or taxify driver, you are a commercial vehicle drivers, and you must be certified by the Lagos Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) before you can operate in the state. The law is the law. what makes you special from others
If you like protest, go offline, nothing uber and others will do except making it a requirement to get LASDRI and other permits before you can sign on on their various plaform.
Lagos Government can allow Uber and others to go out of the state, they dont care, the lagos taxi union wins and they make more money for the lagos state government than uber , taxify and others combine. Now here is what kills the law. Yellow cabs or danfo buses do they have lasdri? Now following the trends in countries (developed and developing) the essence of uber is ride-sharing or pooling. As a tax payer is it a bad idea to ride-share my vehicle for a charge? I think the Lagos state government is combating a trend that is dynamic. So you know people have been ride-sharing before the coming of uber and co. I believe best approach is to make sure all drivers have a verifiable tax number and pay tax from income earned using the e-hailing apps. Apart from causing a surge of unemployment, it will also put money in the wrong hands by way of bribes if officials keep clamping down on vehicles. |

Chaos now the order of day.. clampdown on okada and keke hasn't finish now they are after technology driven hailing company uber, bolt and co.
Well this has been coming for a while and I believe this companies should have been lobbying powers that be for a favourable resolution.
When strike action may not b the way to go, meaningful dialogue and solutions providing should be the wayforward.
The Lagos state govt says there is a transport license coupled with other requirements that commercial taxi should have. Are they wrong to call uber/bolt and co 'taxi service's- NO... cause their is a payment receive and both parties (uber n driver) earn a fee.
Now the problem therein is what is govt getting from uber/bolt operation within the state?
A simple solution is not telling drivers to pay a 100k for transportation license which yellow buses and cabs dont pay (but they have a strong union which is govt approved), but every driver can pay a Tax on money earned to the govt. Now remember government role is to provide roads and other infrastructure, now this govt is telling me to pay a license fee to use the same road they provided for me - doesnt make sense. But if the tax identification number uber requests for during sign up is actually a verifiable one, every income by driver will be tax and govt gets their share to use for greater good of the state.
But goods news is that from reliable source from code of conduct burea ikeja, there will be a review of their transportation license and it may be reduce to benefit all parties. So watch out coming weeks |
