shymexx: Interesting.

Apparently, US and Kiev are also planning to send humanitarian aid there.
Don't you see that the game is getting more interesting? Hmm! I told some friends here in US that this is a moment of decision for America and EU and they were like Nothing is gonna happen... You know yanks and there chest-beating.

all4naija: You are perhaps correct but there are equally good number of those who don't find him interesting looking at the incessant bombing, resistant behavior toward his policies and protests in the past. If the Russian people are given the time to express themselves we might just see there could more people who are opposed to his views than those who accepted them. However, Putin has been suppressing those voices going against his government. How can one know if his people really like him in the right sense of his oppressive nature?

Being a nationalist on the extreme right wing is becoming more of a problem to that region. I think he should quit politic and let the younger generation of Russians decide their future.
Of course it's difficult to run a govt without opposition and certainly any govt that wants to change the lives of people has opposition to deal with. Certainly, president Putin has opposition, but then again we look at the percentage of those who oppose him to those who like him. Brother, 80% approval is no child's play!

If we tell ourselves the truth, Putin is not to blame in Ukraine imbroglio... I think it utter insanity for the USA to conceive the idea of trying to snatch Crimea from Russia, for crying out loud that can never never never happen. Even if the entire world is against Russia. Heck! Don't you know the significance of Crimea to Russia? A part of Ukraine that houses the Sevastopol where Russia has it naval base?

Russia has two naval bases in the world both in Syria and Ukraine and the USA with over 70 naval bases all over the world still wants to snatch the little 2 bases Russia has. Oh common if you were Putin what will you do? Allow the yanks to station there naval bases in Black Sea Sevastopol? Absolutely not!

For me, my concern is does this goings-on between Russia and west support Africa? And Nigeria in particular? If it does then let's catch this opportunity and enhance our leverage in global affairs.

all4naija: Oh, I see! You have systematically played down on my post with 'Comedian' and explain it to your best understanding while expressing your poor opinion. Whatever you have regurgitated in this very post is not related to what I said in my previous comment, whatsoever! You are a grandeur in misleading people as famous Russian KGB leader in his mischievousness and bullying tactics. The one who is bent on causing trouble where it is not necessarily required of him. That I am not going to accept in your formulation to misinterpret my words. Jeez!

Why would anybody take your post serious? When you are using a term like Lucifer to explain your view of a free world or what freedom is all about. No people in their right senses would want to be subjected to dictatorial government. That is very clear in my statement.
Putin is highly regarded by his country men, and I think that's what matters most - irrespective of what the west or anybody might say. He might haven taken some wrong steps, but he remains a nationalist to Russians.
Foreign AffairsRe: Russian Nuclear Bombers Keep Roaming Closer To U.S. Airspace by castrogee(m): 12:31am On Aug 11, 2014
shymexx: Honestly, it's not like I'm a big fan of Russia like that. I think I'm even more sympathetic to the American cause, because like everyone else in the generation, American culture influenced all of us subconsciously. And apart from the UK, I know more about America(and its history) than any other country in the world. However, I was opportune to read about the Soviet Union, Russia, and Putin a few years ago(the book was authored by a Prof. Emeritus from Oxford University but I can't remember the name now) and that changed my perception. Coupled with America's excessiveness and pseudo-humanitarian interventionism everywhere in the last two decades that has caused more problems, than actually solve anything. The Libya debacle was the tipping point....and the whole Ukraine thing is just senseless being that the country is a basket-case with absolutely nothing to offer anyone - and it's next to Russia. Even if Russia were North Korea, it's still an unacceptable behaviour since America will never allow that to happen next to its borders

In as much as the EPA thing needs to be applauded, there's still a lot to be done. Take for example the "Terrorism in Africa Summit" in Paris and the just concluded "US-Africa Summit" that yield a meagre $14billion investment. That just shows how clueless these folks are and we're still being treated like the colonial days. Once you go around begging for hand-outs, you have no leverage in anything. We need more and our leaders need to act fast as the global power landscape is shifting. Brazil and India are already putting their respective countries in advantageous positions. Ditto Turkey which is also part of NATO, but doing more productive businesses with the far east and Brazil. Even Germany has been taking full advantage of everything by expanding its market everywhere.
The highlighted sums up the reason why America is loosing steam in global politics and affairs...
Foreign AffairsRe: Russian Nuclear Bombers Keep Roaming Closer To U.S. Airspace by castrogee(m): 9:52pm On Aug 10, 2014
shymexx: I think Africa's foreign policy in the scheme of things should be about: no enemies and no friends. We've tried the west for so long and we've not benefitted anything from it. And sucking up to Russia or China would also give them leverage over us. So, to get the best bargain out of it and the bipolar world that looks inevitable, we've to play our cards right - go for the safer option.

There's no friend in international politics and every country out there is trying to protect its national interests, and maximise every opportunity available. Right now, the west is broke, and they have nothing to offer anyone. Evidently, it'll be wiser for us to align a bit more with emerging economies(countries that are somewhat like us, but still far better than us) in a lot of things.

Personally, I think America's game right now, since its fall from empire status looks more likely than ever(but I can't predict the timeframe), is to bring Europe down with it. Hence Africa needs to stay away from that, so as not to end up as a collective victim of circumstance.
Exactly, the point @OP. I'm no fan of America or Russia. But I think what's going on in Ukraine in all fairness is neither Putins fault or Russias'. The imbroglio Ukraine found itself is a lesson to all western suckers. Nations of the world should be allowed to develop independently without interference from anybody or any country under any guise irrespective of who's interfering.

I think there is wisdom in the present leadership of Nigeria. I understand that Nigeria recently refused to partake in the exploitative EPA agreement which could have suckle up our domestic manufacturing. Such an example should be applauded by Nigerians and other African nations should emulate it.

The way NATO carries itself is becoming of an aggressor rather than a mediator, and for once somebody is standing up to it. The final rhetoric is that Putin might have a long walk to victory but maybe he might achieve what he wants.
Foreign AffairsRe: Russian Nuclear Bombers Keep Roaming Closer To U.S. Airspace by castrogee(m): 8:08pm On Aug 10, 2014
Truly, I think the brouhaha between NATO (with America as the chief) and Russia will definitely be a bad end for the NATO. I understand that the USA wants to maintain financial and political hegemony in the world. And Just like Putin said in his 2007 Munich speech I don't think a UNIPOLAR world is possible today.

No matter how hard America tries - the rising of countries from east Europe and East Asia is absolutely inevitable. My only concern is where Africa stands in all these... And that's why I get screwed up when some Nigerians try to suckle up the west or even Russia. We should find our identity and follow it. For me I think a multipolarised world would be of immense benefit to Africa and that's if we are able to play by the rules. Having a single country; weather Russia, America or China dictate to the rest of the world, for me is monopolistic and I liken it to the same scornful communism that the west is against.

I thinks what's happening now is Gods design to bring Africa to the fore... If only we can grab these opportunities. Word! Western sanctions can Never bring down Russia without first harming Europe.

PoliticsRe: US Whistleblower : Russia Extends Edward Snowden's Asylum By 3 Years by castrogee(m): 9:15pm On Aug 07, 2014
Sometimes I get the feeling that the goings-on between Russian and the USA is just a blow of hot air. I think in the end everybody will either loose or gain. USA is a powerful country but stepping their bounds into Russia is absolutely risky, hence EU's reluctance to follow USA blindly. Albeit US just wants to harass Putin into playing ball in their quests for global dominance, but I don't think Putin will give-in an inch; even if the entire west rises up against him, because Russia wants its own independence.

Certainly, sanctions against Russia will serve the west no good as it will spiral into the entire global market and will cause a great harm to the entire Europe and NATO. Remember sanctions didn't crush Iran, - then let alone Russia which is a far bigger economy and a nuclear threat.

The Simple truth is that the world is becoming multi-polar and there is absolutely nothing any body can do about it!

Ikengawo: Why is the north opposed to state police and new states? The answers are more sinister than you'd think. New states is 50% about getting less allocation and 50% about freeing northern minorities. Most northern states are mixed, and the new states will give the oppressed minorities in the north, not just the middle belt, total independence from Fulani overlords that send their mercenaries to kill them at will. They use these minorities to inflate the population of the hausa fulani knowing very well that those people have completely different ethnic identities languages and culture and many aren't even muslim.

the fraud that the hausa fulani have been using to hold the country back is over. If they can't develop through honesty they should know what they're not bond to develop period.
Very good observations. I totally agree with your opinions!
TravelRe: Nigerians In Oslo, Norway by castrogee(m): 12:09am On Jul 07, 2014
StarFlux: A) Obtaining permanent residency is pretty straight forward. Study/work and apply thereafter as the easiest way. There's a 3 year residency rule, but they're open to exeptions if you make a strong case. You can see the full list here: http://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/permanent-residence/permanent-residence-permit/?c=nga#Adult-2

B) All/most jobs pay okay. I work in a grocery store to pay for my expenses and earn 3900N per standard work hour + additional pay for weekends/evenings/closing. That's more than enough to live a comfortable life. You wouldn't live very comfortably in the US with such work. Anyway, then you have the work which usually requires education/experience which pays even more, after that you have what you could classify as high paying work - with dedication you have good chances of getting such a job. The reason I used grocery stores as an example is because you start low and advance pretty quickly, eventually you'll have a shot at becoming a store manager, which is a high paying job and requires no education. So even the unfortunate ones have a chance in this country. It all depends on you.

C) I personally have not experienced any racism or hostility. Pretty much all my contacts are Norwegian and there's no tension. That's here in Oslo anyway, where there's plenty of immigrants, could vary from place to place. America is a country built by immigrants, so obviously it's not really comparable, but there's nothing to be worried about as a Nigerian in Norway.

D) The requirement for a visa application is 2,5M Naira the first year. It's not a fee - but it's required to guarantee your welfare.

E) Personal opinion. Couple of keynotes you can google: healthcare, social security, support organ, pension, human rights, free education, stability etc.

Take care!
Thanks so much for your answers, it is reliable and concise.

zerray: tnks bro i cnt thank you enough bt ill love highlight something here

1) im nt among the people that so keen on running from nigeria o lol,but i just want a place with limitless opportunities.limitless opportunities in the sense that when im through with my msc i can decided to get a good job in canada or nigeria.if i shld get a job in nigeria, ill definate return home.

2) ill love to ask if uk course work include internship?

3) my uk options are still very open.ill let you knw where i belong soon.
Dear sister,

In reply to your further concerns, I wish to advice your accordingly: there's no country in the world where you won't find opportunities even in Somalia. Also there's no country in the world that is a haven or a basket of opportunities not even in America. Opportunities are more or less 'individialistic' by this I mean while mr A might have the best opportunity in Canada Mr B migt find his in Nigeria, so opportunities are personal... I hope you get what I mean?

In direct answer to your question, let me first assume you are a science student, who wants to pursue her professional career abroad. The first thing you do starts with your decision of which is made up of; course and location, by this I mean for example while Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, 50% of our GDP comes from our oil sector and 30% comes from finance sector (The banking, the insurance and the stock or money market). Taking the above case as an example, if some one comes to you and says he wants to study space technology in Nigeria, what will be your reaction? Of course you will laugh and maybe you will recommend a psychiatrist for the person.

However, if in America where the American space programs is the biggest in the world, and your friend in America says he wants to go into space technology will you laugh at the person? Absolutely not! Because there are opportunities in that area in America unlike in Nigeria.

Conversely UK has small oil resources unlike in Nigeria, knowing this, if your friend in UK says he wants to go into petroleum engineering, what will be reaction? So from these examples I hope by now you should understand why I said your decision will be determined by course and location.

If for example you are into IT off course America or Germany is your best bet. Let me use myself as an example, I did Computer Engineering in my undergrad in Nigeria. I gained admission to study Engineering mgt in a USA university, coming to the US I discovered that IT is the ruling master in the country, I immmidiately switched to Software Engineering, so you now see how your course (department or discipline if you like) affects your decision of which country you want to go to.

UK vs Canada, dear sister I want you to know that no matter what people tell you about oyinbo country, it will always be different when you see your self abroad because then you will know better. But just know that England is the financial capital of the world. With more than 5000 banks and other financial institutions. Know also that every major international company in the world has it's office either head or branch office in England. Canada is not excluded it has one of the worlds biggest agricultural firms, and other big industries like the blackberry inc.

For me I think the major problem with UK is just that it is hard to get residency papers whereas in Canada it's a bit easy. Having said that, you have to ask yourself dear sister what is my life ambition?

Is my life ambition to work a little bit abroad and retire in Nigeria, or is it just to get education from the west. If your life ambition is the former then I think you may need a place where getting residency paper will not be a problem, but if your life ambition is the latter, definitely you need a place where you can do your MSc in shortest possible time and at low cost and return back to Nigeria.

You see my dear, why I decided to advice you is because I know this is the period in your life when you MUST get it right! Otherwise the consequences of wrong choices might spoil your entire life and you will become frustrated for the rest of your life, God forbid it shall never be your portion in Jesus name.

Don't be in a hurry to take a decision plan carefully and stragize intelligently, I know a lot of people in US who are so frustrated in life. Most of the friends you have posing or doin shakara to you that they are in America don't even know where to lay their heads this night. Honestly you won't believe me, but any sincere person will tell you that Oyinbo country is not rosy, let alone now that there economies are shaking.

Even in America, cities like Detroit, Pholadelphia, Bridgeport etc are worse than what you can imagine. The bottom line of every thing is for you to plan prayerfully, ask God to lead you aright, and I bet you will come out on top!

Remain blessed.

zerray: pls canada or uk where is a better place to have a masters interms of
-affordable accommodation
-where student can work while also studying atleast for allowance
-well recognised degree in nigeria labour market
thats all for now.
My dear sister,

From your questions and worries I can sense that you are passionate about your future, and you want to make the right choices! Granted, from experience no choice is entirely bad (wrong) or absolutely good (correct) but in the game of choices I think some choices are more rewarding than others. I suppose that you are in Nigeria right now and have the ambition of crossing over to the west to pursue your noble ambition.

Absolutely! When faced with this kind of dilemma of choices you hear a lot of advices both from experts, mediocres, and the downright novice. In regards to your questions I will like to chip-in my advice, which to the best of my knowledge might help you, because i was once in your shoes but now I think I know better.

Going to the UK vs Canada is synonymous with the simple Nigerian comparison of Lekki and VI which is better? The answer depends on the individual/s, but given that some people will prefer UK to Canada and others will do just the opposite tells you that both countries share a lot in common.

In terms of education I will advice you to go for UK and these are my reasons: first, I will categorize these reasons into subheadings which are duration, cost, adaptability, and opportunity.

An average MSc course in the UK takes just one year of two semesters, whereas in Canada it's basically two years of four semesters. Who wants to spend his entire life studying? If you have two assignments to do with different time variations I believe it's wise to choose the one with lesser time commitment.

Cost: remember in UK you have two semesters while in Canada there are four semesters to do. I know some Universities in UK, good universities for that matter where you can do MSc for less than 12000GBP, whereas a good recognized school in Canada will take at least 30,000 CAD in tuition fees alone and that's about 17,000GBP. I know you are looking for the opportunity to work and study but i will disappoint you with a revelation - as a student your work can only pay your house rent. I tell you this my dear sister, because I don't want you to be under the illusion that you will work and make millions, all those stories you hear na complete wash! Furthermore, getting a student job is simply luck and by chance both in UK and in Canada you might be lucky to get something but just know that it's not automatic anywhere and that's the more reason you need to make sure your tuition fees are reasonably low, so that you could have surplus to take care of yourself.

Adaptability: in this category I think I will still choose UK; this is because for someone coming all the way from Nigeria ( a tropical country in the sub Saharan Africa) cold is usually an obstacle and you have to know that the cold in Canada is no joke! Even here in America, the part of America facing Canada is called the New England and sometimes during winter the temperature can be -10 degrees So you should know what I mean now. Going forward the teaching technique in UK is quite similler to that of Nigeria unlike Canada where it's a totally different ball game. I thinks also that Nigeria shares a whole lot in common with UK more than Canada and adaptation will not be much of a problem for you in UK.

Note that the UK degree is valued very well in Nigeria and even in the west. UK remains the education capital and academic destination of the world! Canada's eduction is equally very recognized and valued.

As for opportunities there is a major reason why people choose Canada in preference to UK, and that's in getting residence papers and that where lies the whole difference in these two countries. While it is near impossible to get UK residence papers it's somehow less difficult to get Canada's papers. In fact when you finish your MSc in Canada they will give you a two year visa extension for you to work in Canada but in UK it's nothing. When you hear people shout Canada! It's simply because of the papers. I've a lot of friends in Canada and they complain to me how hard it is to survive in the country.

My sister I've taken out time to write this lengthy sermons to you because I don't want what happened to me to happen to you. I'm a software engineer based in the USA and when I came into America newly I thought all my problems have been solved, so I didn't plan very well while in Nigeria. In fact it was when I have landed in America that I started planning my life and re shaping it. I discovered immediately that all this things we used to hear while in Nigeria about the west na film trick. The reality is that things are as TOUGH here as it is in Nigeria.

Finally, I want you to take your time and plan very well. Cross check your facts don't just depend on the advice of people, but try to understand the reason why you want to travel abroad and plan accordingly. This is because people will tell you things from their own perspective and their own perspective might not be your lot. Another thing I want you to know is that at this your stage in life the sky is your starting point if you plan well. I want you to know that there is no way you can plan well without the Master and that's JESUS so I earnestly advice you to pray and believe strongly in God. I believe God is gonna see you true!

Be blessed.

Well, naturally they'll consider any research you may have done, letters of recommendation, work experience etc, but nothing out of the ordinary as far as I know.

Yes, studying and working is entirely possible, but for the first year at least, you should have some money. After you know the basics of the language, you'll be able to apply for jobs more easily. Though, you can never be too sure, and I recommend always having some back-up money.

If you want to settle down, Norway is the place. Norway has the highest standard of living in the world, and you have much better opportunities here than any other place. I really don't understand why so many insist on going to UK or USA when Norway is ahead of both of these two countries by a fair margin. It's a country full of social goods, high acceptance towards foreigners, and is generally the place you want to be considering the economic situation in the rest of the west.
Norway's definitely the place you'd want to raise a family. Free education for all, low unemployment rates, peaceful, but most important of all: stable.
Dear Starfux,

I've heard a lot about Norway and it's steady rise in global competitiveness, but never have I heard anyone speak so assertive like you sounded in your post. I'm a software engineer based in USA; with the current rumblings in the world (economic imbalance) America seems to be in the centre of another economic implosion. I've seen the signs that there may be a geopolitical shift of economic activities from the west to the east and Northern Europe, consequently Starflux I need to ask you for some clarifications and will be glad if you respond most respectfully.

A) please can you enumerate the steps in involved in getting a Norwagian passport or permanent residency in Norway.
B) from the angle of a professional I want to know the chances of getting a high paying job in Norway.
C) as far as immigrants are concerned, America is the best country for Immigrants, can such be said of Norway?
D) even if I have to go for an MSc in Norway what's the cost of such venture?
E) you did say in your post that Norway is far better than the ALMIGHTY USA and maybe UK can you please elaborate with some proven statistics?

Your response is highly anticipated!

I see all these pictures of transformation and I keep asking myself this question: What were all our other leaders doing for the last 30 years since 1983?

How come its Jonathan revamping the dead railways and building brand new tracks?

How come its Jonathan rebuilding our horrific airports and building 5 brand new ones?

How come it's this same Jonathan fixing the death traps we previously called roads?

How come its Jonathan who privatized the power sector and is overseeing its massive redevelopment?

How come every other leader forgot to properly base our economy and suddenly Jonathan comes in and we are now by far the biggest in Africa?

How come Agriculture has finally come back and why is it happening in Jonathan's era?

And to think that all this is happening in the midst of the greatest security challenge Nigeria has ever faced?

What on planet earth did our leaders do in the last 30years where we had extraordinary peace? In 3 years Jonathan is doing what they didn't do in 30 years? This for me is a massive mystery!

Me: From the result of the random searches I conducted online I discovered that UB has a good faculty ratio; a faculty ratio of 14:1 I consider it a good faculty ratio because it will give me quicker access to my college lecturers; also the tuition fee is affordable; a tuition fee of $16,000 to me is something that we can readily afford, furthermore UB is a good research institution with great laboratory like the renewable energy laboratory. But more importantly I had correspondence with some college professors such as Christian Bach, Neil Lewis and
V.O: (cuts in and started smiling and nodding his head approvingly) it ok; its ok …. Ehm so what course did you do in undergraduate?
Me: I did Computer Engineering.
V.O: Ok why did you change from Computer Engineering to Tech Management?
Me: Because Tech Management suits my career goals in the sense that it gives me the opportunity of writing the statement of work for all the personnel involved within the technology spectrum. Note also that as an engineer the knowledge of Tech Management will make me a hot cake in the labour industry because I will be seen as both an operator and also a manger. Furthermore Tech managers are in high demand in the market take for instance the revolution going on in the power sector when these power companies come fully on stream they will need the services of Tech Manager to manage their industries and turbines.
V.O: How many universities did you apply to?
Me: I applied to three Universities namely: UB, Howard University and NT&AT University
V.O: (kept nodding his head) ok good; good so why didn’t you want to pursue your MSc in Howard or NT & AT?
Me: First, Howard didn’t give me admissions it was only NT&AT that gave me admission. I choose UB because as an African I understand UB is amongst the most racially diverse universities in America.
V.O (nodding his head) ok good, so who will be paying for your tuition fee?
Me: My dad, do I show you his bank statement?
V.O: No, no; don’t worry (kept smiling and nodding) ehm you said your dad will be paying your tuition fee?
Me: Exactly both the tuition fee and the living expenses.
V.O: Good (at this juncture I was becoming certain that my visa will turn-out positive) ok what does your dad do for a living?
Me: My dad is a medical doctor with ……………………………as his clinic.
V.O: (he looked at me for some seconds say 4-5sec and started typing stuff in the computer) your dad is a medical doctor?
Me: Exactly
V.O: Pick up your passport on Thursday. Congratulations wish you safe trip! (handed me with the white paper)

One thing I like with GEJ is his steadfastness in his delivery of the dividennd of democracy to electorates. This he has demonstrated by his numerous achievement that cuts accross Infrastructure, Education, Healthcare, etc. GEJ is simply the best thing that has happned to Nigeria and the best PRESIDENT ever!!! 2015 is guaranteed
