Nigeria's oldest school pupil dies aged 83

A man believed to be the oldest school pupil in Nigeria has died at the age of 83.

Mohammud Modibbo was unable to go to school as a child because he worked as a trader, travelling around the country.
He decided to enter primary school in his mid-70s and had recently begun secondary school in the northern city of Kano.
His teacher, Abdulkarim Ibrahim, said Mr Modibbo was "easy-going and jovial".

"During classes, he was very attentive and asked questions when he didn't understand - either asking the teacher or a student sitting beside him."

Mr Modibbo had dreamed of pursing a university education, but his "sudden death" had robbed him of that chance, his teacher added.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records the oldest person ever to have enrolled at primary school, was Kenyan Kimani Marugeat the age of 84.
He passed away five years later

PoliticsBuhari To Investigate Allegations Of Ghanaian Involvement In Oil Theft by catchfun(op): 5:36pm On Sep 10, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has hinted that his government may have uncovered some Nigerian oil companies conniving with Ghanaian oil firms to steal crude oil from the country, Daily Trustreports.
Addressing members of the Nigerian community in Ghana on Monday during his one day state visit, Buhari revealed that he had received reports that some oil companies in Ghana were bringing Nigerian crude oil into the Ghanaian system and vowed to deal with the perpetrators.
“We are going to pursue this information and find out if it is legally done. We will try to get to the bottom of it and prosecute the companies or those persons, who are involved,” he declared.

PoliticsBuhari Has Kept Faith With Campaign Promises – Tukur by catchfun(op): 5:29pm On Sep 10, 2015
A former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for keeping faith with his campaign promises.
This is contrary to claims by the PDP that the President has derailed in the implementation of the manifesto of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Tukur, Buhari has hit the ground running in tackling corruption, insurgency and unemployment with the efforts already yielding positive results.
“As far as I am concerned, the President is going according to his agenda. So you can judge as well as I can judge. Buhari wants to confront corruption, he wants to confront insurgency and he wants to tackle unemployment. So for me, he is going the right way, he has not deviated.
“We must remove religion from politics. We must accept ourselves as Nigerians and not see ourselves as being from A or B state, or local government. We must ensure that culture, ethnicity, religion or anything we cannot change, we don’t bring to the table”, Tukur said.
Addressing newsmen on Thursday at his Abuja residence, ahead of his 80th birthday, coming up on Tuesday, Tukur cautioned the PDP against destructive criticism of the President and his policies.
“My advice is that they should not allow religion, ethnicity and other parochial considerations creep into the nation’s politics,” Tukur said.
The ex PDP chairman advised President Buhari to choose his ministers on merit, above any other considerations, saying “Buhari should not appoint those who want the job, he should appoint those the job wants.”
Such appointees, he said, must be credible, experienced and incorruptible with proven integrity to make a difference.
He counseled that politics should be built on justice, equity and fairness to deepen the nation’s democracy and governance.
The ex party chairman said the PDP would have recorded a better outing in the last general election if he had remained the chairman, adding however, that the Nigerian people got the change they desired.
He foreclosed the possibility of defecting to the APC at his age, saying in democracies across the world, there must be a ruling party and the opposition.
Recalling the circumstances under which he was forced out of the PDP, Tukur said some power brokers in the party found it difficult to embrace his principled leadership style.
“I preached what I believed. I wanted election and people in the PDP said they wanted selection. If the majority or the strong people in the PDP did not believe in it, then the choice or the next thing for me to do was to leave.

PoliticsOndo APC Tells Mimiko And The PDP: Fear Not If You Are Not Corrupt by catchfun(op): 8:23pm On Sep 08, 2015
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has lashed out against Governor Olusegun Mimiko and his cohorts in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop exercising unnecessary fear if they are not corrupt.
Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
In a statement issued in Akure on Tuesday by the Party's spokesman, Omo'ba Abayomi Adesanya. said "We are aware of the vigorous efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors' Forum Chairman, Governor Olusegun Mimiko‎, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, the PDP leadership and former Ministers under the Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan-led administration to voraciously rubbish and blackmail the anti-corruption crusade of the APC-led federal government by tainting and painting it as selective, witch-hunt, political attack and a mere time waster."
Mr. Adesanya described a statement credited to the Commissioner for Information in Ondo State, Kayode Akinmade, on 1st of August, 2015, as baseless. The statement said some people plan to bring a series of petitions through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the PDP leadership of the State.
He stressed that Nigerians voted for the government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 28 presidential election because President Buhari promised to nip corruption in the bud.
"Nigerians' passionate appeal to Mr. President is to be fearless, not to be deterred, and to intensify more efforts against the menace called corruption, in order to bring culprits to a screaming halt,” his comments read in part.
The Party also advised that the individuals to be appointed into government should be ready to show leadership by example as the Buhari administration would not spare anyone found culpable in a corrupt practices.

PoliticsAs Buhari Blazes The Trail For Merit: A Rejoinder To Reno Omokri by catchfun(op): 1:48pm On Sep 08, 2015
According to Mr Omokri, federal character is the ailment and corruption is the symptom of the ailment. His view is anchored on the premise that once federal character is eliminated and replaced with “merit”, all will be well with Nigeria.
“Merit”, the oft used phrase, has many meanings. It was used as a mask to justify tribalism under the former administration and possibly under the present one. The former finance minister of Jonathan ascribed the bizarre position where the Minister of finance, co-ordinating minister for the economy, central bank governor, DG of the budget office, DG of the Debt Management office, DG of Pencom, DG of RFMAC, DG of AMCON, DG of the SEC, CEO of the NSE and CEO of the Sovereign Wealth Fund all came from one tribe to “merit”. At that time, ‘merit” was the tune being sung to high heavens. The tribes at the receiving end of “merit” inevitably replaced the word “merit” for the word “marginalization” when the effect of “merit” based recruitment meant that it was absent from appointments when that same “merit” is employed (albeit determined by different people).
Merit, is easier and less controversially applied when recruiting an entry level graduate to his or her first job. At that point, one simply looks at the persons’ university degree grades, institution of graduation and general appearance and temperament of the individual at the interview. Matters become significantly more nuanced when one is recruiting for senior management positions. At that point, “merit” becomes a highly subjective proposition. Senior management roles in the private sector around the world are filled by reference to the following factors listed in order of priority. (1) relevant, direct and appropriate high level experience in a job similar to the job that is being filled; (2) in the absence of direct and appropriate experience, experience in a job that is not similar but whose skill set allows for the acquisition of skills that can be transferred to the job that is being filled, (3) great leadership and management skills, (4) temperament and good interpersonal skills, (5) Good communication skills and (6) Good university education.
It is fair to say that Nigeria has always been a country that does things back to front. It places undue prominence on educational qualifications and relegates germane experience when filling senior management positions. Granted, most senior managers have decent university qualifications in any event. Former president Jonathan appointed a hedge fund consulting sales man at Goldman Sachs with no macro fiscal experience as Finance minister (he was later moved to the trade and industry ministry) and a commercial banking CEO with no macro economic monetary experience as CBN governor (this appointee is on course to completely destroy Nigeria economically). He also appointed a lead researcher in semi conductors at an investment bank as CEO of Nigeria’s fledging Sovereign wealth fund instead of sourcing for Nigerians working as Chief Operating Officers at hedge funds or sovereign wealth funds across the world. It is fair to say that most of the appointments in the financial regulatory space were filled by people that lacked requisite experience in the roles they were appointed to fill. The current president himself followed that same path in the selection NNPC head and in his selection of Customs head. Appointing a compliance lawyer to operate as CEO of Nigeria’s major oil company at a most sensitive time was bizarre. Additionally, appointing a retired colonel from the military police unit of the army to head the Customs also mirrors the absence of thought that permeates the decision making process when appointments are being made. Former president Obasanjo hired a self promoting operations manager with no macro fiscal experience from a glorified commercial bank (known as the world bank) as Finance minister. At least he micro managed her. She was left to work unhindered by President Jonathan and later bankrupted FG finances and left the Nigerian state mired in debt.
To some people, the above mentioned appointments were “merit” based. To others, the appointments reflected nothing other than poor judgment.

PoliticsBad Debt: AMCON Seizes Buruji’s Properties Over N8.3bn Debt by catchfun(op): 1:26pm On Sep 08, 2015
THE Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has taken possession of properties belonging to Senator Kashamu Buruji over an estimated N8,292,432.67 billion owed seven banks.
The AMCON Act allows it to take possession of assets of recalcitrant debtors while the recovery action is pending in the court.
Recent reports on the social space indicating that AMCON had taken over Buruji’s hospitality businesses were confirmed by Daily Sun that the Senator may have forfeited his Best Western Hotel, opposite Lagos Bar Beach, to AMCON for a N5 billion loan he took from Access Bank some years ago, to build his business empire, which comprises Best Western Hostels, Hotel De Island, Island Motors, Nacoil and Kashmal Properties.
Although a reliable source at the corporation who spoke toDaily Sun on condition of anonymity on Monday denied AMCON took over the properties but confirmed that Buruji has failed to service his debt over the years, which makes him one of the delinquent debtors.
Buruji was among the delinquent debtors listed by AMCON in 2012 as a debtor to Access Bank.
Daily Sun findings showed that the Senator would have to abdicate his control and management of his Best Western Hotel so that proceeds derived by AMCON will be directed to offset the Access Bank loan.
Breakdown of the debts owed by the obligor, amount exposures, banks and the periods showed that Nacoil International Ltd is indebted to the tune of N391,228,042.78 in 2011, Nacoil International Ltd-N940, 723, 512.65 in 2010, Hotel De Island, Kasmal Properties, Island Autos and Nacoil are indebted to the tune of N6,122,312,551.47 to Oceanic Bank in 2010, Kashmal Integrated Investment Ltd, – N110,791,598.28, Island Auto International Ltd, – N118,106,984 – Keystone in 2010, Prince Buruji Kashamu N341,184,552.62, and N268,085,080.17 – Zenith Bank in 2011 totaling to N8,292,432,322.67.
The management of the corporation had said that it spent N1.7 trillion to buy non-performing loans of banks.
According to AMCON, it has so far recovered about 51 per cent, not the 15 per cent that was thrown out. And of the 51 per cent that has been recovered, AMCON has made a recovery rate of 103 per cent.
“So, AMCON has so far recovered more money than it put out for those loans than it has recovered till date. Our target still remains 80 per cent, which will be one of the highest recoveries in the world. And we know that as time goes by, it will become more difficult to recover,” AMCON further explained

Mr. Lalong made the disclosure to Journalists in Plateau on Sunday night at a media chat to mark his 100 days in office. He said the media parley was for citizens of the state to assess his performance since he assumed office on May 29.

He said the financial situation of the state was also the reason for the delay in making political appointments.
"Even those I have appointed so far have not been paid salaries.

"I myself have not received a single month salary as I speak with you; we want to settle civil servants salaries first," he said.
On insecurity, Governor Lalong said 150 additional mobile police officers were recently deployed to the state to curb communal attacks, particularly in Barkinladi and Riyom local government areas where violence has continue unabated.

On the recovery of public funds allegedly looted by his predecessor, Jonah Jang, Mr. Lalong said he has handed the matter to the anti-graft agency, EFCC, to investigate and bring defaulters to book.

"Since the two weeks grace I gave them elapsed without any response, I have written to EFCC to take over from where we stop, but if they delay in the assignment, I will remind them again," he said.

Mr. Lalong also said his administration has paid 5 out of the 7 months workers' salaries arrears he inherited.
"We will pay the 6th month tomorrow (Monday)," he said.

The governor also said that the Plateau crisis lingered because security operatives were owed 6 months allowances, which his administration has settled.

He explained that the state was yet to access the federal government bailout funds. According to him, Plateau will be in the next batch of states to receive the bailout funds.

Commenting on the allegation that his administration has already borrowed money, he explained that he took a loan of N4.5 billion to settle workers' salaries.

CrimeMan Dies Without Will, Court Orders Second Wife’s Arrest by catchfun(op): 11:51am On Sep 05, 2015
A society lady, identified as Princess Abiodun Folasade Madojutimi Omotade, has been issued a bench warrant by a Lagos High Court following her refusal to appear before it on contempt proceeding on Tuesday, July 21, 2015.
Princess Folasade is one of the two wives of late Mr. Olaseni Ayodeji Omotade who reportedly died in a plane crash on 22nd October, 2005, leaving the family without a
will.
As at the time Olaseni died, Folasade, who was the only woman then in the house, allegedly cornered all the properties and embarked on asset stripping, disposing all the properties and assets of late Olaseni without the knowledge of Grace, the deceased’s first wife. Hell was let loose when she attempted to dispose the family’s property at No. 5a and 5b, Kayode Alli Street, Omole Phase I, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to reports, the bench warrant was issued by Hon. Justice L.A.F Oluyemi, ordering all security agencies, the Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Customs Service, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, International Police, (INTERPOL) and all other security forces to arrest her and put her in prison until September 23, 2015 when the case will come up for hearing.
The warrant read in part:
“It is hereby ordered: Order bench Warrant to be and same is hereby issued against the first defendant/contemnor, Miss Folasade Abiodun Adesokan, aka Mrs. Omotade, for her arrest by any enforcement agency/agent in Nigeria; and to remain in prison custody when apprehended till the next hearing date which is 23rd September, 2015, for hearing of the contempt proceedings.
One of the wives with three children, Grace Omotade, who reportedly claims to be the only legal wife and a matron packed out of her matrimonial home in annoyance when her late husband, then in his prime, brought in Folasade whom she viewed as his mistress.
However, the defendant, Folasade, stressed that she remains the only surviving wife of the deceased with three children and that the first claimant, Grace, was a mere concubine and in the course of her co-habitation with the deceased, claimed to have had 3 children for the deceased.
Folasade said: “I she was three months pregnant when I lost my husband and I gave birth to a set of twins named Taiwo Oluwadamilare Omotade and Kehinde Ayooluwa Omotade on May 17, 2006.
“I currently have three children for my late husband,” she noted.
Reports say Grace got a hint of the development and filed Suit No: ID/183M/2006, seeking an order restraining and preventing Folasade and her agents from selling, disposing off and/or leasing the property at Omole Phase I and an order directing and/or mandating the Registrar of the court and or the Deputy Sheriff to put the property under lock and key and deposit same with the Honourable court pending the determination of the case.

PoliticsBuhari, Osinbajo Deceiving Nigerians With Their Assets Declaration – PDP by catchfun(op): 9:05am On Sep 05, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to present the copies of their assets declaration forms submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The opposition party described the declaration by an aide of the President as “a deceptive window-dressing to hoodwink unsuspecting Nigerians of a mere list of some belongings of President Buhari and Osinbajo, in place of the pledge made to Nigerians by the President as candidate of the All Progressives Congress.”
It said Buhari made the pledge on March 18, 2015, at exactly 5 pm during one of his campaign tours.
The party recalled that the President, in his own words, had stated to Nigerians that, “I pledge to publicly declare my assets and liability and also encourage my political appointees to publicly declare their assets and liability.”
The PDP however noted that President Buhari and his deputy failed to produce copies of their declarations, showing the exact nature and value of respective assets.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said “the release of a mere list of belongings falls short of credibility, transparency and anti-corruption standards as well as exposes the proclivity of the present administration for deception.”
“We have noted the release of a flimsy list of belongings of President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo by the Presidency, who want such to pass as the public declaration of assets as pledged by the President. Nigerians are not deceived by this poor attempt at window-dressing designed by the Presidency to hoodwink the unsuspecting populace in a desperate bid to shore up its diminished image.
“We ask, is the resort to a mere list, instead of true copies of the declaration, not a ploy to give the Presidency a window for denial in consonance with their widely observed inclination for flip-flopping, back tracking and brazen denials of their statements and actions?”
The statement also said, “All we want is credibility, integrity and sincerity of purpose. We are not questioning how a President, who by December last year, declared that he had only N1 million in his account, could suddenly now list N30 million in the same bank account by May 29, and after an expensive campaign; we are not yet demanding the public declaration of his assets in his wife’s name.
“We are not even applauding the multiplication of his cows from 150 to 250 in a space of three months, arising from his dual and conflicting pronouncements on this issue.”
“Mr. President, this is a mere list of your belongings and not a public declaration of assets in fulfillment of your covenant with Nigerians,” Metuh added.

PoliticsJonathan, gusau, Alison In N2.4billion Scandal Over ‘house Boats’ Rentin by catchfun(op): 8:00pm On Sep 03, 2015
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, his then defence minister, Aliyu Gusau, former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke and the immediate past Chief of Naval Staff, Usman Jubrin, an admiral, may soon have to answer questions on an alleged N2.4billion house boats rent scandal for the Nigerian Navy.
An ongoing investigation into the conducts of officials of the immediate past administration indicate that Mr. Jonathan instructed Mrs. Alison-Maduekwe to release funds from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to the defence chiefs to rent 13 House Boats to fight oil theft in the Niger Delta.
The boats were hired for N2.4 billion, an amount experts believe is more than enough for the country to buy the boats outright.
Authoritative security sources investigating alleged financial misdeeds of the Jonathan administration said their market surveys showed the boats rented for that princely sum could have been acquired for keeps at N100million each, bringing the total cost to N1.3billion.
Our sources said the decision to rent the boats was taken by the former defence minister, Mr. Gusau, and some of the recently retired service chiefs without seeking the advice of military officers familiar with such procurement, including those on the ground in the Niger Delta area, who were of the opinion that the cost of renting the boats was too high.
The funds to purportedly rent the boat was released at about the same time the federal government controversially postponed the presidential election from February 14 to March 28.
Although the request for the project was made in 2014, there was a sudden rush to make payment in mid-February this year.
It is not however clear whether a part of the money was used for electioneering-related expenses at a time “political cash” was ferried around the country by some contestants.
To kick off the transaction, Mr. Gusau initiated a memo to Mr. Jonathan on October 16 last year. Mr. Jonathan forwarded same to the former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
In the memo, the former defence minister argued that the deployment of the house boats, under Operation Pulo Shield of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, had been helpful in curbing oil theft and other criminal activities.
But investigators are contesting that claim, saying there was no significant drop in cases of oil theft during the period.
In fact, a top security source said “the claim that the use of the house boats checkmated oil theft is just a lie because this was the same period that oil theft increased”.

is this keyamo a fool or a mad man?
The manifesto of APC on which platform Buhari contested is vicariously the manifesto of Buhari. Keyamo should be reminded we practise a multi-party system with each party having it's distinct manifesto implementable upon it's flag-bearer coming into power and not a zero-party system where each contestant has his own individual independent manifesto.

PoliticsN27b Pre-paid Metres Yet To Arrive Months After FEC Approva by catchfun(op): 8:19pm On Sep 02, 2015
Months after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the administration of former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, approved a contract for supply and installation of prepaid electricity meters at the cost of N27 billion, the metres are yet to be supplied, The Guardianreports.
According to a document published on the website of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), the supply contract, approved on May 20,2015 was awarded to seven companies. The companies were said to have been mandated to supply 376501 each of single phase and 3-phase meters which cost N8.3 billion and N18.8 billion respectively.
However, there have been issues relating to the performance of the contract. According to a source at the Ministry of Power, there is a disagreement among parties to the contract, which is currently the subject matter of a case before a court. One of the companies that won the supply contract, Mojec International, also expressed disappointment at the outcome of the project. The chairperson of the company, Mrs. Mojisola Abdul said her company has not yet received any order from the Federal Government.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Ambassador Godknows Igali, was reported in May to have given assurance that the meters were still in the procurement phase with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) . However, over three months later, Nigerians are still yet to receive the prepaid meters.

PoliticsBuhari Never Made 100 Days Promise To Nigerians – Keyamo by catchfun(op): 7:23pm On Sep 02, 2015
A Lagos-based lawyer, Festus Keyamo has defended President Muhammadu Buhari over accusations that he made a promise concerning his achievements within 100 days in office.
Keamo said although his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), may have done so, Buhari personally did not make any 100-day promise.
Keyamo told Daily Trust that he was at Chatham House in London with the President when he was asked about what he planned to achieve within 100 days but the President was non-committal.
“On whether he promised anything within 100 days or not, I was at Chatham House with him when he went to London. I was there with him when he was asked the question about 100 days and he said he would never commit himself to 100 days. He just said he knows that there is a lot for him to be done”, he said.
Keyamo, who said while the President cannot fulfill all his campaign promises within 100 days, added that in the last 100 days, he had raised the consciousness about the war against corruption and committed himself to fighting insecurity in the country.
He said, “If you look at it critically, the first thing he has achieved is that he has raised the consciousness about the fight against corruption. No matter how you look at it, we are talking about corruption now. We are talking about the war against corruption.
“Before, there was even no debate at all, there was nothing to talk about before because there was no war going on. But now there is a war going on. So, that’s the first thing he has achieved, every body is now conscious again about the anti-corruption crusade.
“The second thing is that the President has taken security as his priority in the last few days, he has taken security as his priority from the day he was sworn-in, shuttling from one country to another trying to form an alliance with the neighboring countries against the insurgents. So that alone is a clear intention he has shown to give security a priority

CrimeMounted Boko Haram Militants Attack Again by catchfun(op): 7:16pm On Sep 02, 2015
Maiduguri - Twenty- six people were killed in Nigeria' s northeastern Borno state by attackers on horseback believed to be rebels of the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, witnesses said.
Ali Abdulqasim said his home village of Kolori and the neighbouring village of Baana-imam were attacked late on Tuesday.
"I ran and hid in a mango tree outside our village, from where I watched secretly how they chased the scampering villagers and shot at them," Abdulqasim said on Wednesday.
He spent the night in the tree and when he came down in the morning he saw many dead bodies, he said. "I counted almost a dozen [corpses], mostly the elderly and children," he said.
The death toll was 26, said Abbas Gava, a spokesperson for a civilian defence group.
Boko Haram's six-year-old uprising has caused the deaths of an estimated 20 000 people.
More than 1 000 people have been killed since President Muhammadu Buhari was elected in March with a pledge to wipe out the militants. Nearly 2 million have been driven from their homes by the uprising.
Around 75 000 refugees from Niger, Nigeria and Chad have been displaced from their homes in recent weeks due to Boko Haram attacks in the Lake Chad area, according to Doctors Without Borders. Nigerian authorities have warned that Boko Haram is trying to extend its violence across the country including Lagos, the country's largest city.
Earlier this year, troops from Chad and Nigeria drove the extremists out of some 25 towns held for months in what had been declared an Islamic caliphate. The displaced insurgents have returned to hit-and-run tactics and suicide bombings.
Hundreds have been freed from Boko Haram captivity, but none of the 219 girls abducted in April 2014 from a school in Chibok were rescued. Last week marked the girls' 500th day in captivity.

PoliticsOil Theft: NNPC To Deploy Drones In Nigeria’s Territorial Waters by catchfun(op): 8:22pm On Sep 01, 2015
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Tuesday, promised to tackle the issue of crude‎ oil theft with the deployment of drones across the nation’s territorial waters to monitor the inwards and outwards movement of oil vessels.

In a statement by the NNPC in Abuja, Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu‎, also lamented the ‎rising incidence of crude oil theft and its negative impact on the country’s refineries, and stated that the NNPC is working on a range of far reaching options designed to end the issue of crude and petroleum products theft within the next eight months.

‎Kachikwu, who stated this at the special conference on Security in the Gulf of Guinea organized by the Gusau Institute, warned that if left unchecked, the menace could invariably make it impossible for the NNPC to operate the refineries.

‎He said, “We are launching an armada of approaches which will include incorporation of drones to check movements of vessels within our territorial waters; We are looking at the current logistical nightmares of changing staffing at the loading bay of crude oil export terminals virtually every 90 days.

“We are trying to equip the navy sufficiently though they are very well equipped in terms of skill set but not in terms of arsenal for patrols within the maritime area.”

PoliticsStop Castigating Looters Publicly – Okogie Tells Buhari by catchfun(op): 8:26am On Sep 01, 2015
Renowned cleric and former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to invite suspected looters of the country’s treasury for dialogue.
According to him, the fight against corruption would be made easier if looters were allowed to return their loot privately without calling out on them publicly.
Speaking with Punch, Okogie said it was also cheaper to recover loot through dialogue than charging suspected looters of public fund to court.
He said, “I agree with the National Peace Committee that the President should thread softly and should set criteria that he is going to use. Corruption is endemic in Nigeria. That is why they are asking for caution: ‘Look at it properly,’” he said.
The cleric urged President Buhari to invite those suspected to have looted government treasury “to speak to their conscience.”
Okogie said, “People like that, when they go to court, they don’t look right and left before they do things. If I have a man like that and I know he has the money, I will weigh the options; ‘will it profit the nation if I take this man to court. If I take him to court, he is going to get a lawyer. The lawyer will be employed with part of the money I am looking for.
“The lawyer will now start to ask for adjournments and all what not. I may not get this money until after four years. And the judge too, in the mean time, is getting (part of the loot); you will not know. He won’t just adjourn anyhow.
“The lawyer will invite his brother (the judge) to come and get part of the cake until half of it will be gone. We have to look at the issue from that angle. And you may end up getting nothing.”
When asked if such would be possible in a sanitised judiciary, he asked, “Is it sanitised?”
According to Okogie, these are the areas the President ought to have started his anti-graft war by “sanitising and purifying” the judiciary first. “At least, you will know that three-quarters of the place is tight, and then you can start (the probe),” he added.
The fiery cleric, who decried the spate of moral decadence in the society, stated that it was the responsibility of the family to bring up the child well.
He lamented that parents were no more disciplined as before, saying, “These days, they don’t care anymore. That is not right; that is not how they were brought up.”
He said, “Look at the probe that is going on now, for example; how can one person manage to get (steal) one-point-something billion; not even million but billion, and very soon you will hear of trillions? Where did he get it from? That is how it is going on, and he is from a family.
“And if his conscience worried him, he will run to his pastor to say ‘I want to pay tithe — 10 per cent; this is my tithe.’ The pastor collects the tithe. Seeing that it is huge money, the pastor will ask him, ‘what can I do for you?’”

PoliticsBuhari, Fayose At War Over ‘lopsided Appointments’ by catchfun(op): 8:10am On Sep 01, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari and the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose on Monday engaged each other in a war of words over the former’s recent appointments into federal government positions.
While Fayose described the President as running the country as if he was the president of northern Nigeria only, Mr. Buhari said the governor’s outburst was capable of triggering ethnic clashes among the nation’s communities.
The governor in a statement, on Monday, said steps taken by the President since May 29, 2015, when he assumed office, were tainted with ethnic and tribal colouration, saying it was inimical to the unity of Nigeria.
But Mr. Buhari responded strongly, denying the allegation, and urging Nigerians to be wary of the antics of Mr. Fayose and the Peoples Democratic Party, who he said are bent on regaining what they lost by stoking ‘ethnic and religious fault lines”.
The governor, in a statement signed by his Special assistant on Public Communication, Lere Olayinka, depicted the actions of the President as the “Nothernisation of Nigeria”, noting that the appointments made by Mr. Buhari so far negated the principle of federal character and had taken the unity of Nigeria for granted.
Mr. Fayose argued that it was wrong for President Buhari to have made 31 major appointments,,with seven coming from the South while 24 were from the North.
“Under Buhari, are people from Southern Nigeria only meant to be hounded and harassed by anti-corruption agencies and the Department of State Security (DSS) while those from the North are meant to enjoy federal government juicy appointments?” Fayose queried.
“Apart from lopsided appointments being made by the President, I am worried that the construction of Lagos-Ibadan expressway has been slowed down while work has stopped on Lokoja-Abuja roads, which are the major roads linking the Southern part of Nigeria with the North.
“Also, we have been told by the Federal Government that the Second Niger Bridge project has been suspended and one is now beginning to remember how Buhari cancelled the Lagos Metroline Project in 1985 at a loss of over $78 million (then) to the Lagos tax payers.”
He maintained that Nigeria could only move forward if there was equity and fairness, highlighting that those who made the country’s constitution and enshrined the principle of Federal Character were mindful of the ethnic diversity of the country.
According to Mr. Fayose, President Buhari’s running of Nigeria as if he is a Northern Nigerian President was not in the interest of the country.
The governor further argued, “They said the President made the appointments on merit and I wish to ask whether there are no competent people in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southern part of Nigeria, especially South-East where no one has been appointed.
“Are they saying Igbo leader like Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who graduated with a first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos, is not competent to be appointed as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)?
