Politics › Prove You Are President Of All – NUJ Tells Buhari by catchfun(op): 8:49pm On Nov 19, 2015 |
The leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) day challenged President Mohammadu Buhari to live up to his inauguration promises by giving due consideration to the multi-racial and religious composition of Nigeria in filling his cabinet and other political positions. Speaking during the union’s ‘First Quarterly Briefing’ in Abuja, the National President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Odusile, said the call became necessary in view of the concern expressed in certain quarters over the composition of the federal cabinet by the President. He urged the President to as a matter of necessity give vent to the federal character principle in the exercise of his constitutional and discretional powers without sacrificing merit. ‘‘It is necessary at this juncture to add that in filling other political positions, Mr. President, in the exercise of his constitutional and discretionary powers, should, without sacrificing merit, give due consideration to the multi-racial and religious composition of Nigeria. ‘‘As a President that belongs to no one, but to all, he should give vent to the federal character principle, as a way of giving a sense of belonging to the component units of Nigeria,’’ he said. Odusile also urged the president to ensure that the newly appointed ministers rise up to the challenges ahead of them on time to address the numerous issues undermining the economic advancement and national peace of the country. “Although it took a while for President Buhari to constitute the Federal Executive Council, we hasten to enjoin the president to make the long wait of Nigerians for him to constitute the executive council worth its while by making the ministers hit the ground running by addressing the myriad of problems facing the country especially in the areas of security, job creation and infrastructure development. While commending the efforts of the present administration to stamp out corruption resulting from leakages in finance establishments through the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Odusile called on the government to monitor the implementation in order to ward off abuse of the process. “We acknowledge the bold initiative by the federal government and lend our total support to this and other efforts that will minimise if not completely eradicate corruption in our nation. We however call on government to monitor closely the implementation of the TSA to guide against its abuse by unscrupulous elements who may want to profit unnecessarily from the policy at the expense of the country.” Security On insecurity, the president also urged government to step up Intelligence procedures adding that religious fanatics who stir up violence be dealt with promptly to forestall irreparable damage to the mind and psyche of adherents and the larger society. Kogi election Ahead of the governorship elections scheduled to hold in Kogi State, the NUJ President cautioned politicians against making provocative statements capable of leading to the destruction of lives and properties during and after the elections. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/prove-you-are-president-of-all-nuj-tells-buhari/lalasticlala |
Nairaland General › Black Market Hits Akure As 10 Litres Sold For N3,000 by catchfun(op): 8:25pm On Nov 19, 2015 |
As fuel scarcity continues to persist across the nation, black market dealers have flooded the street of Akure, the Ondo state capital, selling 10 litres of fuel at N3000. Our reporter, who monitored the situation today, observed that the few fuel stations, which opened for business, were selling at the rate of N140 per. Despite the fuel stations selling above the official price of N87, their stations witnessed long queues as buyers struggled for hours before getting fuels. Also, some young men have taken this as opportunity to make quick money as they struggled to get fuel at the fuel stations and later sell it at high price to motorists. A banker, Mr. Olawale Badmus said “you can’t believe that I have been finding it difficult to get fuel for so many hours, until a guy approached me with 10 litres of fuel and asked if I would buy? I don’t have a choice and I bought it at N3000”. It was learnt that those who are in dire need of fuel normally stormed fuel stations that may likely open for business as early as 5.a.m. A taxi driver, Mr. Olarinde Bolu said “I have been at this particular station since 5 a.m just to get fuel for me to work for some hours; it is so painful that I am still struggling to get fuel as at 8 a.m. “I have just been informed about a guy selling black market and I think I will go to him and get fuel but the passengers will pay for it”. Bulo, who is a graduate of business administration urged President Muhammadu Buhari to remove the fuel subsidy. “Until government take that bold step to remove subsidy, Nigerians will still continue to experience the issue of fuel scarcity. Let the oil market be freed. Oil price has dropped but Nigerians are still paying high prices all in the name of fuel subsidy and scarcity”. A human rights activist, Mr. Morakinyo Ogele asked Buhari to look for means of breaking the fuel cartels. He particularly blamed the petrol marketers for the scarcity of fuel nationwide . http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/19/black-market-hits-akure-as-10-litres-sold-for-n3000/ |

Politics › Jonathan Symbol Of Democracy In Africa – Carter by catchfun(op): 8:16pm On Nov 19, 2015 |
Former United States President Jimmy Carter has poured encomiums on Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan. The 39th US President described Jonathan as a symbol of democracy on the African continent. He made the remark while receiving Jonathan at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum located at the Carter Center in Atlanta. They were said to have held a fruitful meeting at the Carter Center where they held a wide-ranging discussion on global issues and shared views on how to promote peace, democracy and good governance in Africa and the world. Speaking on Jonathan’s time in office, Carter said: “President Goodluck Jonathan is the symbol of democracy in action. You set an example that other African leaders should follow.” The former American President also praised Jonathan for organizing a transparent election and easily conceding defeat and handing over to the opposition. By so doing, he said that Jonathan showed his deep democratic commitment. Responding, Jonathan said that his actions while in office were informed by his belief in a peaceful, transparent and people-oriented governance, adding that Africa can only move forward through democracy and good governance. He commended President Carter for the exemplary manner he had in his post-presidential life, adding that he was inspired by Carter’s commitment to causes that advance the path of humanity. Jonathan and Carter share a common experience as one term Presidents and have both retired involuntarily from politics while rededicating their lives towards making the world a better place. They both agreed that peaceful and stable government increase foreign direct investment and sustainable development. The Carter Center is a nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter and guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering. It seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health. Jonathan has been visiting many strategic pro-democracy institutions where he had been invited to share his experience in office as a promoter of democracy and advocate of good governance in Africa. He had so far been hosted by the Presidential Precinct in Virginia, John Kennedy School of Government, King Center as well as the Carter Center. While visiting the Presidential Precinct in Charlottesville Virginia, last week Jonathan assured the international community that African leaders were displaying more commitment to democracy and good governance, as a means of engendering sustainable development an improving the lives of the people. He is scheduled to speak a long side with Former US Secretary of State Johnnie Carson about elections, peace and democracy at the National Democratic Institute, and Howard University in Washington DC . http://thenationonlineng.net/jonathan-symbol-of-democracy-in-africa-carter/ |
Education › Nigerian Scholar Solves 156-year-old Problem In Maths by catchfun(op): 1:03pm On Nov 15, 2015 |
The 156 years old Riemann Hypothesis, the most important problem in Mathematics has been successfully solved by Nigeria Scholar, Dr Opeyemi Enoch. With this breakthrough, Dr Enoch, who teaches at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), has become the fourth egghead to resolve one of the seven Millennium Problems in Mathematics. The Kogi State-born mathematician had, before now, worked on mathematical models and structures for generating electricity from sound, thunder and Oceanic bodies. A statement in Ado Ekiti yesterday said Dr Enoch presentation of the Proof on November 11, 2015 during the International Conference on Mathematics and Computer Science in Vienna, Austria becomes more symbolic coming on the exact day and month 156 years after the problem was delivered by a German Mathematician in 1859. The Riemann Zeta Hypothesis is one of the seven Millennium problems set forth by the Clay Mathematics Institute with a million Dollar reward for each solved problem for the past 16 years. According to the statement, “Dr Enoch first investigated and then established the claims of Riemann. He went on to Consider and to correct the misconceptions that were communicated by Mathematicians in the past generations, thus paving way for his solutions and proofs to be established. “He also showed how other problems of this kind can be formulated and obtained the matrix that Hilbert and Poly predicted will give these undiscovered solutions. He revealed how these solutions are applicable in cryptography, quantum information science and in quantum computers,” it stated. Three of the problems had been solved and the prizes given to the winners. This makes it the fourth to be solved of all the seven problems. Dr Enoch had previously designed a Prototype of a silo for peasant farmers and also discovered a scientific technique for detecting and tracking someone on an evil mission. Enoch has succeeded in inventing methods by which oil pipelines can be protected from vandalism and he is currently working on Mathematical approaches to Climate Changehttp://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/nigerian-scholar-solves-156-year-old-problem-in-maths-gets-one-million-dollars-reward/ lalasticlala |
Crime › Femi Fani-kayode: The Carnage In Paris And The Great Paradox by catchfun(op): 7:39am On Nov 15, 2015 |
In the light of the horrendous events that took place in Paris last night I believe that it is time to eliminate and exterminate every single Jihadist terrorist on the face of the earth. We must show them no mercy and we must hold no quarter. We must also acknowledge the fact that America and her European allies made many mistakes in their handling of the war against terror. For example Saddam Hussein of Iraq, Muammar Ghaddafi of Libya, Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Bashir Al Assad of Syria, despite their despotic ways and many shortcomings, suppressed the jihadists, the terrorists and the Islamic fundamentalists more than anyone else in the Arab world. Despite this the Americans and the west fought against them, destroyed their countries and removed them from power. Out of them all only Al Assad remains standing and even at that he presides over only half of Syria and that is by the grace of the Russians and the Iranians. Whilst the Americans and her western allies hate, despise and seek to destroy the secularist leaders of the Arab world they appear to adore the ruling families, kings and despots of the Arab Gulf states who fund Islamist terror, who promote the Wahhabi philosophy and who export the violent and relentless Salifist tendency more than any other. It appears to me that this is the greatest paradox and contradiction of the modern age and frankly it is as inexplicable as it is inexcusable. The fact of the matter is that the most powerful and deadly Islamic terrorist organisations in the world today, including Al Nusra, ISIS, Al Qaeda, Al Shabbab, Boko Haram, Islamic Jihad, Hamas and numerous others are funded by America’s greatest allies in the region, namely Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar. The mess that we are witnessing in the world today, the terrible carnage that we witnessed in Sharm El Sheik two weeks ago, the slaughter in Ankara three weeks ago, the mass murder in Beirut two days ago and the butchery in Paris last night were acts of evil and manifestations of bestial savagery that were wrought and made possible by years of doublespeak, subterfuge, weak, ineffectual and counter-productive Middle Eastern policies and leadership by the administration of President Barack Obama. That is the bitter truth. He condoned and pampered the Saudis from the outset, he turned his back on Israel, he wined and dined with the Iranians, he supported Al Nusra, he refused to confront ISIS and instead he supported the destruction and murder of the Arab leaders that were prepared to do it for him. Yet in all of this the people that I pity the most are the Nigerians. I say this because every single day for the last six months since President Buhari has been sworn into office there has been an obvious resurrection of the power, might and confidence of Boko Haram yet the people of Nigeria have failed to recognize or acknowledge it. They are still studying what they describe as Buhari’s ‘’body language’’ and they have chosen to ignore the fact that the economy is collapsing, regional and ethnic tensions tensions are boiling, food prices are going up and human rights and civil liberties are being trampled upon. They have chosen to ignore the fact that a full-blown dictatorship has now evolved in our country where the rule of law is negated, where security agents act with contempt for the law and impunity, where court orders are ignored by government agencies, where perceived enemies are subjected to all manner of persecution and evil and where those that saw through the bogus mantra of ‘’change’’ are ridiculed, humiliated, criminalized without any credible evidence, declared guilty until proven innocent, threatened and molested and, in some cases, hounded into exile, detention or death. The despicable way that Buhari is treating Colonel Sambo Dasuki, the former National Security Advisor, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the pro-Biafran movement and Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Senate President confirms my fears about him. He has lost touch with reality and he believes that he can do anything to anybody simply because he is in power. Yet his inability to curb Boko Haram and his reluctance to even acknowledge the fact that the war against terror is in a much more dangerous place than it was towards the tail end of the Jonathan administration is the most glaring testimony of his insensitivity. The bitter truth is that the events that took place in Paris last night, with its massive civilian casualties, occur in one Nigerian town or the other in the north-eastern region of our country virtually every other day but such events are ignored by our local media, covered up by our government and no longer even get a mention on Al Jazera, BBC or CNN anymore. Despite the gallant efforts of our courageous soldiers, from town to town the atrocities of Boko Haram are legion and they have slaughtered almost 8,000 innocent souls since President Buhari came to power almost six months ago. Worse still the bombings and killings have also returned to Abuja and other towns outside the north east such as Lokoja and Okene and the terrorists appear to be slowly making their way to the southern part of the country. Nigeria is saddled with a President who was a great defender of Boko Haram up until a few months ago and who was once nominated by them as their spokesman and negotiator in proposed talks with the previous administration. Rather instructively he is the life patron of the Fulani Cattlerearers Association whose members have been committing acts of terror by butchering, raping, pillaging and abducting many southerners and Middle Belters over the last few months. He is also a President that is implementing a clearly northern and Islamic agenda and who sees the southern part of the country as nothing but a colony of slaves. Under such a man it seems hardly likely that Boko Haram can or will be stopped. Worse still the Nigerian people have been left alone by the international community to fight that war on their own. Even though it is clear that not many in the international community empathise with us when our people are slaughtered by Boko Haram, it is gratifying to note that our people, as generous and as compassionate as ever, have expressed immense sorrow about the sad events in Paris and they have expressed immense solidarity with the people of France through the social media. This is very touching and that is the Nigerian for you. He is resilient, faithful, compassionate, generous, true, caring and always ready to sympathise with others and to offer words of encouragement in difficult times. Even though our blood is being shed by Boko Haram on a daily basis without the world seeming to care or batting an eyelid, we share their pain and mourn with them when their blood is shed and when their people are killed by the terrorists. I guess that is a testimony to our humanity: it is what makes us who and what we are. May God protect our nation from these evil and desperate beasts who kill the defenseless, the weak and the vulnerable in the name of their god and may He deliver us from them. May the souls of all those that were murdered in Paris last night rest in peace, may the blood of the innocents that was shed be avenged, may the Lord comfort their families and loved ones and may He be with the people of France at this difficult time.http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/15/femi-fani-kayode-the-carnage-in-paris-and-the-great-paradox/ lalasticlala |

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians displaced by insurgency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States that they would return to their homes soonest, saying his administration was doing everything possible to end the Boko Haram insurgency. Buhari gave the assurance yesterday while on a visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Makolhi, located after the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola in the company of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu and other top government officials. Buhari, who also visited troops in Yola, honoured seven soldiers who sustained serious injuries in ongoing operations against Boko Haram with the Purple Heart medal for gallantry. “My government is doing everything possible to rebuild your homes, schools, hospitals and roads to enable you go back to your homes. Boko Haram will soon be a thing of the past. “I know that most of you are farmers and your farmlands have been destroyed but let me assure you that you will soon go back and continue with your farming,” Buhari told the IDPs. He expressed concern that Boko Haram was killing people in markets and other public places without provocation. He said the fight against insurgency is not for the government alone, noting that everybody must be involved and give security agents the deserved support to enable them crush the insurgents who he described as the enemies of the country. SEE ALSO: Troops destroy Boko Haram camps in Kerenowa, Chikun Gudu The President commended the Adamawa State government for the support it has given the displaced persons. He assured the Adamawa government and the people that the Federal government would soon come to the aid of the state. There was however a mild drama during the visit when the Adamawa State, Governor, Umaru Jibrilla, told the President that the state was burdened by the number of displaced persons, saying: “Mr President, in the next one or two days, we are going to receive about 10,000 of this kinds of people here.” The statement angered the IDPs in the camp who protested that it was not only derogatory but also shows how they are regarded by people in leadership positions. One of the IDPs who spoke with The Guardian, Mr John Audu, said the governor’s comments was not only injurious to them but also reminds them of their sufferings and their present status in the society. “When you refer to people as ‘this kind of people’, it is the highest level of insult to every reasonable person but it is God that put us in this situation. So, we cannot blame the governor; it is the Creator that we can cry to,” he said with tears. cc:lalasticlala . http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/14/breaking-troops-demolish-boko-haram-guard-post-in-sambisa-kill-insurgents-photos/ |
Politics › Ex-nddc Executive Director, Aginighan, 2000 Others Dump PDP For APC by catchfun(op): 8:38pm On Nov 13, 2015 |
Says PDP disappointed Ijaw people on democracy dividendThe gale of defections from the leading opposition party in Nigeria might be far from abating with a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-South geo-political zone, Elder Power Ziakede Aginighan, announcing his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday. Aginighan, a Christian minister and erstwhile executive director (Finance and Administration) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), formally announced he was quitting the PDP, along with over 2,000 of his followers, at a ceremony held on Friday at Bomadi, administrative headquarters of Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State. The former Delta State PDP governorship aspirant said that he decided to quit the PDP mainly because the party failed to meet his expectation of a new lease of life particularly for his people of Ijaw ethnic nationality through accelerated development. Specifically, the one-time acting managing director of the NDDC said that the Ijaw nation has remained the goose that lays the proverbial golden egg but with next-to-nothing to show for it in terms of "dividends of democracy. He said that he could no longer stomach the suffocating disappointment after his membership of the PDP for over 11 years and with the party at the helm of affairs both in Delta State and at the centre in Nigeria for 16 years, because parties ought to exist for the improvement of the lot of the generality of the people. "I joined the PDP with the expectation that the legitimate yearnings of our people particularly the Delta Ijaw for better living conditions would be met", he said, adding, "Eleven years after, I have come to the painful conclusion that there is no tangible improvement in the lot of our people." http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ex-nddc-executive-director-aginighan-2000-others-dump-pdp-for-apc/225548/ |
Politics › Ex-nsa Dasuki: fayose Blasts Buhari, SSS Boss by catchfun(op): 8:11pm On Nov 13, 2015 |
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Friday said President Muhammadu Buhari should be held responsible should anything happen to the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki. A statement by his spokesman, Lere Olayinka, said placing the former NSA under house arrest and refusing to allow him seek medical attention abroad despite court order are violations of his rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria. “The Department of State Services (DSS) placement of the former NSA under house arrest despite court order that his international passport be released so that he can travel abroad for medical treatment is wicked, inhuman, dictatorial and a clear attempt to deny him of his rights to life as enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria,” the governor said. The governor hailed Friday’s Abuja Federal High Court ruling, ordering the SSS to allow Mr. Dasuki travel out of the country for medical treatment. “Nigerians, especially men of the judiciary must join hands to shake dictatorship off the body of President Buhari and his hatchet man, Alhaji Lawal Daura,” Mr. Fayose said. Mr. Fayose said he was particularly happy that Justice Ademola Adeniyi insisted that court order must be obeyed and that his order should not be flouted. “Nigerians who fought late General Sani Abacha to a standstill will fight this emerging Buhari’s ‘militocracy’, which is a clear threat to our hard-earned democracy,” he said. The governor said he was already vindicated on his earlier position that the Director General of State Security Service, SSS, Lawal Daura, was an instrument of political persecution. He likened Mr. Daura to Mohammed Rafindadi of the Nigerian Security Organisation, NSO, that, he said, was also used by Mr. Buhari as instrument of political persecution between 1984 and 1985. Mr. Fayose said the president should be reminded that the Nigeria of 1984 was different from that of 2015. “President Buhari seized late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s international passport and prevented him from travelling abroad for medicare in 1985, thereby leading to his (Awolowo) untimely death of 1987. “Buhari also hounded former Bayelsa State governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha to death all in the name of fighting perceived political opponents. “Therefore, it has become necessary to raise the alarm that nothing must happen to Dasuki. “The fate that befell Awolowo in 1985 must not be allowed to befall Sambo Dasuki in 2015 and Nigerians must rise against this Buhari’s dictatorship and his instrument of oppression, Lawal Daura,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/193119-%e2%80%8bex-nsa-dasuki-%e2%80%8bfayose-blasts-buhari%e2%80%8b-sss-boss%e2%80%8b.html |

The national leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has called on the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to join President Muhammadu Buhari as he strives to re-fix Nigeria. The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mai Buni was reacting to the claim by the PDP that the newly sworn-in cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari “does not inspire confidence.” The party advised the PDP to focus its energy and attention on rebranding itself after suffering defeat and not distracting it (APC) from governing Nigeria. He said the PDP should “face its rebranding pursuit instead of running down a performing government”. Buni, who just took over from ex-APC’s spokesman, Lai Mohammed, who had just resumed his official duty as Nigeria’s new Minister of Information, said the argument of the PDP was “warped and a product of defeat hangover,” adding that ”some ministers appointed under the government of the PDP, were miscreants thugs and mistresses. He said the leadership of the APC was very satisfied with the cabinet put in place by Mr. Buhari and urged Nigerians to support them to deliver. “We endorse all the portfolios, we have absolute faith in the new ministers and we know that the final hour of redemption is here,” he said. “The meticulous assigning of portfolios on Wednesday was also a signal to Nigerians that their electoral investment in our great party and President Buhari was not a waste. “The journey to economic recovery, meaningful democracy, and moral revolution in our great country has started. “For the umpteenth time, APC assures Nigerians of its desire to take them to the Promised Land. “The APC government will not fail the nation, Buhari will keep his words and salvage Nigeria for the benefit of all,” the statement said . http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/13/focus-energy-on-your-dead-party-stop-attacking-buhari-apc-to-pdp/ |

[s] MikelEleta: Pastor Uguru Usani Uguru from Cross River State was just sworn in as a minister of the federal republic of Nigeria, yesterday, but he already has a case to answer.
According to a petition signed by Jenny Iwara Osuaya, wife of one Mr. Iwara Osuaya, a Chairmanship contestant in May 1996, in Cross River State, Usani and others murdered her husband in 1996.
In a Wednesday report by Pointblanknews, a petition, numbered 673, on the allegation had been filed at the Oputa Panel in 2001.
Usani, who allegedly supported another candidate in the 1996 election, was said to have promised offsetting Osuaya’s election expenses. But when Osuaya went to collect the promised compensation, a fracas ensued which resulted in his death.
The assailants were said to have been arrested by the police but Mr. Usani who was a member of the Cross Rivers State Executive Council used his influence to suppress investigation into the matter. However, the preliminary investigation report indicted Usani and others but the police did not prosecute them. The preliminary report was admitted in evidence as Exhibit 2.
In view of this, the Commission reportedly ordered the Inspector-General of Police to constitute another panel to conduct fresh investigation into the matter. But as Pointblanknews reported, the case became a “cold case” after the Oputa Panel.
No dust has been raised yet by the revelation but with the anti-corruption and anti-impunity stand of the present administration, security agencies are expected to look into the matter and reopen the case if they find any substance in it.

Politics › Judiciary Workers, Anambra Govt Face Off: Who’ll Blink First? by catchfun(op): 9:29pm On Nov 11, 2015 |
AWKA—FOR the past three months, all courts in Anambra State have remained under lock as a result of indefinite strike action embarked upon by the state branch of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN. The union’s grouse with the state government was non implementation of the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure, CONJUSS, which was approved for all judiciary workers in the country. Though some states had since started implementing the structure, which places the judiciary workers on a separate salary structure from other civil servants, that of Anambra ran into a hitch because of the state government’s complaint that it is not in a position to implement it due to dwindling financial resources. To prevail on the government to change its mind on the issue, the judiciary workers went on strike three months ago, thereby paralyzing activities in the courts across the state. A visit to some of the courts in the state, including the state judiciary headquarters in Awka, shows that the entire area had been overgrown by weeds, while heaps of dusts have taken over the court rooms. The consequence is that practicing lawyers in the state have remained idle and most of them are complaining openly that they can no longer meet their financial obligations since their clients no longer have their cases mentioned. In fact, with the strike, the Judges and Magistrates, as well as private legal practitioners who have pending cases are on forced leave in Anambra Awaiting Trial Men, ATM, who are being detained in the various prisons, are languishing there, while dates of adjourned cases had since passed. Though officials of the state government and the leadership of JUSUN had met severally to resolve the issue, there has not been a way forward as both parties are still holding on to their positions. Last week, the judiciary workers held a meeting that lasted several hours in Awka and after reviewing the issues at stake, insisted that they would not return to work until the state government implements the new salary structure. At the well attended rally at the judiciary headquarters in Awka, the workers, who came from all the 21 local government areas of the state, said the condition given by the state government that it would implement the new salary structure when its revenue improves was unacceptable to them. They recalled that the agreement it signed with government in 2011 was that CONJUSS would be implemented in the state when the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, doubles, arguing that the state’s IGR has more than doubled. Even at that, the state chairman of JUSUN,, Mr. Mark Ifezue described as unfortunate, a situation whereby the state government attached the implementation of the new salary structure to improvement of IGR, for a salary structure that was approved for all judiciary workers in the country. Ifezue also wondered why the state government was keeping the workers in suspense, urging government to make it clear what it wants to pay, so that the workers would consider such conditions to enable them take a decision on when to call off the strike. He said it is only Anambra State government that is tying the implementation of the new salary structure to improvement of revenue, when states that were not as financially buoyant as Anambra, were already paying the new salary structure. “We are demanding our right and we are not concerned about IGR and its improvement. Anybody who is linking the implementation of CONJUSS with IGR is insulting us. Many of our colleagues who retired from the service have become beggars in their villages because their entitlements have not been paid. We do not understand why Anambra State judiciary should be different from that of other states,” the leadership of JUSUN said. South East Voice gathered that the state government on July 12, 2011 entered into an agreement with the state branch of JUSUN on the implementation of CONJUSS. In that agreement, JUSUN accepted what the state government offered to pay then, based on the promise that it would implement full CONJUSS when its economy improved. The argument of the workers is that the state’s monthly IGR has increased from about N500 million to N1.3 billion and wondered why the state government was still dragging its feet on the matter. However, the state government faulted the argument of the workers, saying the agreement was that it would implement CONJUSS when the revenue of the state improved. Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Professor Solo Chukwudobelu, who spoke on the issue, gave a graphic situation of the state’s monthly allocation from the Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, and wondered why JUSUN would insist on the implementation of CONJUSS by a government that had increased the salary of state workers by 15% in January 2015http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/judiciary-workers-anambra-govt-face-off-wholl-blink-first/ lalasticlala |
