PoliticsNLC Vows To Resist Removal Of Petrol Subsidies by catchfun(op): 12:23pm On Aug 27, 2015
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the new Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, appear to be at odds over his recent comments suggesting the need to fully deregulate the country’s downstream petroleum sector and remove government’s subsidy on petrol.
This Dayreports that while speaking at its national leadership retreat in Calabar, the President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, accused Kachikwu of failing to comprehend the extent of the job for which Buhari employed him to do at the NNPC as he was beginning to contradict the stance of Buhari on the controversial issue of petrol subsidy removal.
He noted that President Buhari has consistently said he is not convinced that the vast majority of poor Nigerians can afford to bear the negative effects of the removal of the so-called subsidy on petrol. As such, he vowed that the NLC and its affiliate unions would continue to resist any attempt at removing fuel subsidy

PoliticsAPC Sets Up Committee To Monitor Buhari’s Compliance With Manifesto by catchfun(op): 11:59am On Aug 26, 2015
The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has put measures in place to access and keep track of the implementation of the party’s manifesto by the by President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government as well as the fulfillment of other promises made by the party to the electorate during the campaigns.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this in a paper he presented at the ongoing 55th annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Abuja, where he explained that the assessment team which will also serve as an advisory committee to the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, is to comprise mainly of technocrats.

It would be recalled that ahead of the 2015 elections, the then opposition party had promised to among other things, tackle spiraling unemployment, as well as insecurity, the fight against corruption and the welfare of the people, especially payment of allowances to the unemployed and the aged.

It also pledged to directly address the deficits arising from the failings of past governments.

But since it assumed power at the federal level, the APC-led government has come under criticism by the opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which has continued to demand the fulfillment of campaign promises by the APC and President Buhari.
Speaking on this, Lai Mohammed stressed that the setting up of the assessment team was to ensure that the government meets regularly with these critical sectors, and that there was a two-way communication between the government and these sectors.

“My party has also set up a mechanism for assessing, continuously, government’s performance and tracking whether or not the government is meeting its electoral promises. An Advisory team to the Chairman of the party, made up of technocrats, will track how the government is faring and also make suggestions to the chairman in this regard,” he said.

Mohammed, who revealed the move by the party in a paper presented he presented at the conference, said that sustaining the gains of the last general election have been made easy by the realisation that Nigerians now have the opportunity to elect a leader of their choice without any hindrance.

In the aftermath of the elections, the APC spokesman said political parties must ensure that there was no disconnect between them and the people, adding that “there must also be constant interaction between the government and the people.”

He said his party, the APC, has organised an induction course for its members in the National Assembly, so that they, as representatives of the people, can have symbiotic relations with their party and the executive arm of government.

He stressed that notwithstanding the existence of separation of power, the relationship between the legislature and the executive should not be adversarial but complementary.

“Constant rapport between lawmakers and their party will ensure that they key into the party’s agenda. We have given every one of our members in the national assembly a copy of our manifesto, so they will see what laws need to be passed to ensure the implementation of the manifesto.

“Then there is the national conference for the party as well as its members in the legislature and in the executive to deliberate on how far the party is meeting its electoral promises.
“It is also important that, through the instrumentality of the party, the government continues to engage the critical sectors – youths, NGOs, Women, people living with disability, the organized private sector, organised labour and other groups, he said.

CrimeNigerian Vigilante Mob 'burns Man Alive For Stealing Soup' by catchfun(op): 9:00am On Aug 25, 2015
A man in Nigeria has reportedly been stabbed repeatedly and burned alive by a mob for stealing soup with his charred remains left outside a secondary school.
The unidentified victim's corpse was left after his death on Sunday in the south-eastern port city of Calabar, the national ThisDay newspaper reported.
The man was one of a group of three who smelt the soup warming in a private residence before dawn, according to Nigerian newspaper ThisDay.
As the three men took the pot from the stove, a woman who was present shouted for assistance and the men were chased by neighbours.
When the man was caught, the mob attacked him with machetes and set him on fire.
ThisDay quoted a local policeman as saying "every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty".
Vigilantism is a source of debate across Nigeria. In the early 2000s, the government created crime-fighting militias to ease the strain on the country’s thinly stretched federal police force.
The growth of Islamist group, Boko Haram, in the north of the country, has seen the Nigerian military further encourage militias.
Since the groups’ introduction, rights organisations have warned of the dangers of mob rule. One militia, the Bakassi Boys, executed 36 suspected thieves in Anambra state, in southern Nigeria, in 2001

PoliticsLalong Begs Buhari Over Suspension Of Immigration Boss, Parradang by catchfun(op): 8:51am On Aug 25, 2015
Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau on Monday met President Muhammadu Buhari over the recent suspension of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr David Parradang.
Parradang was on Friday directed to immediately proceed on suspension while the service’s deputy comptroller general, Martin Abeshi, takes over.
Paradang, who was sighted in the Presidential Villa in company of the governor, was on Friday directed to immediately proceed on suspension.
The Deputy Comptroller General of Immigration, Mr Martin Abeshi, was directed to take over the mantle of leadership of the NIS on acting capacity.
Lalong, who briefed State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with Buhari, said that although investigations into the issues that led to the suspension of the Immigration boss had commenced, it was necessary for him to show concern.
“I came to see the President on some issues affecting my state.
“These include the prevailing issue of the suspension of the comptroller of general of immigration who incidentally is from my state. When you have issues like this in a political period, you must find ways of looking for reasons and possible solution.
“If anything affects any part of your body you must show concern.
“Paradang’s case is still under investigation. A man was suspended and he is from Plateau, it is my concern because I am the governor of the state.
“For every appointment, we must show concern no matter how small. The President is handling it.
“At the end of the day whatever is the outcome I will agree with it, but I also need to get some explanation as the governor of the state.
“I feel comfortable with the response I got and that is why I am smiling. I told him what we are doing on insecurity in our state.’’
On insecurity in the state, the governor said that he set up a 13-man peace committee to address the problem of communal crises across the state.
He said that the measures put in place by the state government to arrest social unrest in the Plateau had started yielding results as trouble makers were being apprehended by relevant security agencies in the state.
“We still have cases of cattle rustling and farm destruction going on in the southern part.
“But, in the last one week, we have taken very good measures and security agencies are working very well in terms of arrest,” he said.(NAN

CrimeMan Spends Six Years In Jail For An Offence He Didn’t Commit by catchfun(op): 7:58am On Aug 25, 2015
Saka Adebola, a 35-year-old bricklayer from Kogi State, is a sad man. With a sombre look, he trudged into the conference room of the church where he was meeting with the reporter that hot afternoon.
“This world is wicked,” he said as he took his seat. “I pray that no one that I know will suffer for a crime he didn’t commit.”
The young man claimed he spent close to six years at the Ikoyi Prison for a crime he never committed. Adebola described himself as a victim of circumstance.
He was charged with the murder of Jide Moses, a fellow bricklayer at the New Market Settlement Area, Oniru Estate, Lekki phase 1, Victoria Island.
He was alleged to have stabbed the deceased in the stomach with a broken bottle during a fight.
But according to him, he was wrongly attacked and inflicted with a deep head wound while trying to protect a food vendor and her baby from being harmed. He said he was sad that the young man died from the scuffle, but he insisted he would always stand up in defence of any woman or child whose life is being threatened.
The event that altered the course of his life, and led to his incarceration started on September 11, 2009, while working at a construction site. He said he was working with the same construction firm, Modulus Construction Company, with the deceased, informing that himself and the deceased, alongside others, were assigned to work on the site where the incident took place.
According to him, on that fateful day, a food vendor known as Zainab was having a fight with her husband and during the scuffle, ran for protection towards where he was sitting with other workers. He said the woman had a baby on her back, but that the husband was still coming after her with the intention to continue the beating. Adebola said he tried to stop the husband.
That move, he recalled, didn’t go down well with the deceased who, according to Adebola, hit him on the head with a big stick.
He narrated that a fight ensued between him and the deceased but that they were separated by other workers. But he said after he was being treated for the wound inflicted on his head, the deceased again charged at him with a bottle and broke it on his head.
“He attacked me with a bottle of gin, broke it on my head and injured me more. With blood all over my body, I grabbed him, collected the broken bottle from him and stabbed him in the hand. I then left the place and went to the hospital for treatment because I was bleeding seriously,” he recalled.
He said the deceased later engaged in a fight with some of his friends who had gone to accost him over the matter. He said he learnt that the deceased died after his argument with the other workers spiraled out of control.
“When I left the hospital the next day and reported at the site, I went to report the incident to the site engineer, who was not around when the fight took place. The man told me to report the matter at the Maroko Police Station. I didn’t know that the man I fought was dead,  and that the police had been to my house and arrested my brother because they did not see me. When I got to the station, the policemen detained me and released my brother. I was handcuffed for four days despite the deep wound on my head,” he told the reporter.
Adebola disclosed that he was later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) where he was detained for three years before he was charged to court for murder on July 3, 2012. The court ordered that he be remanded in prison till December 19, 2012 before his case was revisited.

PoliticsWith The Obstacles In Buhari’s Path, Can Nigeria Still Be Salvaged? by catchfun(op): 7:40am On Aug 25, 2015
By Frisky Larr.
President Buhari’s own health seems to be one of such obstacles that is likely being suppressed and kept a palace secret amid the long battle in its infancy stage. No one but the President himself openly expressed regrets on the heels of his inauguration, that he was elected President only this late and not in his more youthful days of buoyant health and bouncing reservoir of zest for action.
Anyone who has the privilege of engaging former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a casual political conversation involving the future of Nigeria will always be struck by one of his favorite comments. The former President never relents in stressing his optimism about the future of Nigeria. “Never mind the current distractions. Nigeria survived Abacha. She will survive anything. Nigeria will be a great country,” the President would always say.
Today more than ever, I am forced to question the source of President Obasanjo’s optimism. With every passing day, all hopes seem to be dashed whenever a ray of light flickers through the dark tunnel. No event could be more momentous to mark the dawn of hope than the election of former General Muhammadu Buhari, who has now long been installed President of the country. Since his inception however, the nation has faced mixed signals on the prospects of ever making meaningful progress in the battle to redeem the country.
If anything, the cluelessness and aloofness with which the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan handled the affairs of governance in Nigeria ended up elevating the objective value and public perception of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who at least, had a clear idea of what to do with governance and was hands-on all through his tenure as President. Even more strongly elevated and valued by a huge majority of Nigerians is the present leader of the country Muhammadu Buhari, whose intended policy direction in the handling of governance has been no secret to Nigerians since the day he was deposed by a rival General from the seat of power as military head of state.
In a field of leadership aspirants in the 2015 contest that was conspicuously short on candidates with the requisite credentials to fight and wrest Nigeria from the grips of political hyenas, Muhammadu Buhari was the last hope of sort, to save Nigeria from itself. The nation had been set on a seemingly fast descent to the abyss.

PoliticsNigeria’s Buhari Starts Probe Of Weapon Purchases Since 2007 by catchfun(op): 7:28am On Aug 25, 2015
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari ordered an investigation into the armed forces’ procurement of military hardware and munitions since 2007, the latest move in his anti-corruption drive.
Buhari’s National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, opened an investigative committee to look for irregularities during the period and suggest recommendations for “streamlining” military purchases, spokesman Femi Adesina said in a statement on Monday.
“It comes against the background of the myriad of challenges that the Nigerian armed forces have faced in the course of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the northeast,” said Adesina. The probe “is in keeping with President Buhari’s determination to stamp out corruption and irregularities.”
Buhari, who took office in May, has pledged to crush the Boko Haram Islamist uprising, re-equip the military and clamp down on graft. The government is struggling to contain attacks and bombings by the militants, who have killed thousands and displaced more than 1.5 million displaced in its six-year insurgency.
During his election campaign in February, Buhari told a conference that he would audit how the military spent
$32 billion
in the past five years, despite little success against the rebels.
Military Deficit
Anti-corruption groups such as Transparency International say spending by the Nigerian armed forces
is opaqueand soldiers have complained of being under paid, poorly equipped and overstretched.
Adesina acknowledged there was an “apparent deficit in military platforms” causing low morale among troops.
The Nigerian military has also struggled to obtain arms, after the U.S. blocked the sale of helicopter gunships over allegations Nigeria’s military
committed human-rights abuses. Nigeria abruptly ended a U.S. mission to train its troops to fight Boko Haram in December.
The probe will “investigate allegations of non-adherence to correct equipment procurement procedures and the exclusion of relevant logistics branches” when previous administrations secured weapons, Adesina said.
This has “very often resulted in the acquisition of sub-standard and unserviceable equipment,” he said.
Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman declined to comment when contacted by phone.

Unconfirmed reports indicates that former Nigerian head of state , Gen Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has allegedly returned ‘part’ of $12.4bn Gulf oil windfall money.
According to a source within the presidency, the retired gap tooth general “secretly returned the money this weekend to the nations coffers”.Though our source could not elaborate on the details surrounding the sudden action of the retired Minna general.Daily Onus recalled that a Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the suit filed by civil society groups against the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.The presiding judge, Gabriel Kolawole, delivered the ruling on Thursday November 29 2012 in Abuja.
The judge averred that the applicants lack the locus standi to institute the case.Mr. Kolawole however said the plaintiffs should not be seen as busy bodies but patriotic citizens.Six civil society groups, including the Socio-Economic and Accountability Project (SERAP), sued the Attorney- General of the Federation (AGF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over the much publicised $12.4 billion oil windfall, which the country recorded between 1988 and 1992, while former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, was in power. The groups wanted the court to compel the government to release a report of a probe panel headed by Pius Okigbo which probed the spending of the money by the government.
The Federal Government raised many arguments against the suit including: that the report was missing, only the AGF could demand for such a report, and the court had no jurisdiction to entertain the suit.Former president Olusegun Obasanjo was reported to have returned $200 millions to the federation account, If Babangida’s case is finally confirmed he will be the second ex-president to have returned looted money back to Nigeria.
PoliticsRe: Buhari's Grand Plan: DSS Boss Ordered Visa For ISIS Cleric Ahmed Al Assir by catchfun: 4:46am On Aug 24, 2015
ArodewilliamsT:
[s]We have been able to uncover the motive behind the botched visit of cleric and leader of Isis, Ahmed Al Assir to Nigeria.

Sources said that, Nigerian government, through Lawal Musa Daura the DSS boss, directed the Nigerian ambassador to Lebanon to issue an express visa to the terrorist.
Ahmed Al Assir was to be received by the head of Buhari's personal security Abdulraman Dambazau at the airport, then flown to Kano immediately.

The Isis leader was supposed to revive a defunct secret Sudanese consulate in Kano, for the purpose of making it the seat of Isis in Nigeria.
This secret Sudanese consulate was open in April 1984 by Buhari when he was the head of state, then a radical Sudanese was placed there instead of a Nigerian, the Islamic fundamentalist consular started promoting the idea of spreading sharia in the country. Through this consul, many Hausa/Fulani young men have been sent to Sudan for Arabisation and Islamization. There They are exposed to different camps of Osama Bin Laden. Ambassador Bola Dada, former diplomat in Sudan once confirmed that Sanni Yerima and Sanusi Lamido Sanisu, who are now senator, and emir respectively, are products of such radical Islamic teachings in Sudan.
But President Jonathan put a stop to the illegal and dangerous activities of the consulate.

The grand plan for the Isis leader's visit was to formally perfect the admission of Boko haram into Isis, then make them stop attacking the north, but face Christians in the the south in a bid to push home sharia.

Don't forget that a former United States envoy Richard Grenell warned against voting Buhari, because of his connection with Isis. But the man was called unprintable names for saying the truth[/s].

PoliticsNDDC Diverted N183 Billion Niger Delta Development Money, Auditor Gener by catchfun(op): 7:38am On Aug 20, 2015
At least N183 billion that was meant for the development of Nigeria's oil rich Niger Delta, was diverted by those put in charge of the government development commission for the area, the Auditor General of the Federation, Samuel Ukura said Wednesday.
Mr. Ukura insisted on the veracity of his special audit report accusing the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, of diverting the money.
The Auditor General said his office stood by the report and directed those not satisfied to be prepared to defend their position before a special committee of the National Assembly.
"The Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation stands by the Special Periodic Checks on the NDDC and its contents. Any person or corporate organization not satisfied has the opportunity to defend itself before the Public Accounts Committees (PACs) of the National Assembly," said a statement by a spokesperson for the office, O.A.Ogunmosunle.
The auditor general had earlier made his findings about the money known to the National Assembly, as constitutionally required.
Following the reports, which urged the lawmakers to take immediate steps to recover the missing money, the NDDC took to the media to discredit the report, dismissing it as "very misleading and untrue".
The Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the Commission, Henry Ogiri, who described the report as "premature and misinforming", said the report tended to accuse the current NDDC management of being responsible for the alleged missing money.
"I say without fear of contradiction that the Auditor-General's report is premature," Mr. Ogiri said. "I say this because we are already putting together the responses to the queries which were directed to a period we were not in the Commission."
"I completely disagree with the Auditor-General on this issue. Some of the claims he made in his report are things that do not hold water as at today. I do not believe that there is any money missing."
However, the Office of the Auditor-General said it took serious exception to attempts by the NDDC to not only deny the allegations, but also casting aspersions on the integrity of the Special Periodic audit submitted to the National Assembly.
In a strongly worded statement in Abuja, the OAuGF said the reaction was compelled by the negative sentiments occasioned by the NDDC's condemnation of the Special report "calculated to demean the efficacy of the Constitutional mandate carried out by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation."
"It is noteworthy to state that it took NDDC16 months to grant the Office permission to commence the periodic checks beginning from 9th December, 2011 to 6th May, 2013," the statement said.
"Similarly, it took another 16 months and several reminders to the NDDC with effect from the 24th of April, 2014 to 12th August, 2015 before the final report was submitted to the National Assembly.
"It may interest the reading public to know that at the time of this Press Release (Wednesday), the NDDC is yet to respond to the Special Periodic Checks."
Reminding the public of the constitutional mandate of the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation to submit its reports to the National Assembly periodically, Mrs.Ogunmosunle said in doing so, due process is usually followed.
In the three special audit reports submitted to the Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, Mr. Ukura had noted that the N183.7 billion was discovered to be missing during the periodic checks carried out by his office on the activities and programmes of the Commission between 2008 and 2012.
While about N70.4 billion was paid as mobilization to various contractors that never showed up at to site to do the job, he said another N90.4 billion was discovered to be extra-budgetary expenditure "for Head and Sub-heads without approval by the legal authorities."
Equally, the sum of N10 billion was recorded in the books as tax deductions without evidence of remittance to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), while about N5.8 billion was said to have been paid to contractors for projects not executed, stalled or abandoned, in addition to N1.2 billion as taxes not deducted from contractors.
Again, the report said about N3.1 billion consisted of transfers to some unauthorized accounts, while N1.7 billion was outstanding staff advances never accounted for.
Also, there was no evidence that about N785million out of N1.1 billion budgeted for the supply of furniture to various schools in Delta State was spent on the project, despite being certified as paid.

Nairaland GeneralSix Unbelievable But True Stories by catchfun(op):
Have you ever heard the phrase"stranger than fiction"? If you watch the news regularly, you know how unbelievable real stories can be. From chance encounters with lost relatives to unexplained medical emergencies, strange incidents happen over and over again. The following stories may seem unbelievable , but they are true.

Laura's Balloons
In the first story , a young girl named Laura Buxtom was at her grandparents'50th wedding anniversary, where she released a bunch of balloons into the air. She attached a note to the balloons that asked the person who found it to write back to her. Less than two weeks later, she received a reply. A balloon had been found by another Laura Buxtom 150 miles away. They had other similarities, too. The girls were both 10 years old. Also, each had a guinea pig, a rabbit, and a three-year old black Lab dog.

Hospital Mystery
After 31-year old Gloria Ramirez complained of chest pains, she was rushed to Riverside General Hospital. She died shortly after due to kidney failure. However, the strange part of this story is what happened when hospital staff tried to treat her. First, they were overcome by strange fumes when they took a blood sample. Also, they found an oily sheen covering the woman's body, along with unexplained crystals in her blood. The people treating her were soon affected, too. A doctor caring for her suffered lung and liver damage, as well as bone necrosis. As many as two dozen other people were affected. Though further tests were inconclusive, investigators thought that Ramirez, who also suffered from cervical cancer, had taken a cocktail of drugs that combined to make organophosphate, an insecticide, causing her death and affecting those treating her.

The Curse of James Dean's Car
In 1955, James Dean was killed in a crash while driving his Porsche, a sports car. Because of the crash, the car seemed to be jinxed. For instance, as parts from the car were used elsewhere, they brought bad luck. When a mechanic removed the engine from the car after the crash, the engine broke loose and fell on the mechanic, shattering both his legs. Eventually, the engine ended up in the racecar of a driver who was killed while driving it. Similarly, another driver was killed while driving a car that had been fitted with the drive shaft from James Dean's car. Even the car itself seemed to be cursed with bad luck. When a mechanic began repairing James Dean's Porsche, the garage it was housed in burned down. Similarly, while on display in Sacramento, the car slipped off the block and broke a teenager's hip. In Oregon, the trailer that was holding the car slipped and smashed through the window of a shop. Finally, in 1959, the car mysteriously broke into 11 pieces while on steel mounts, meeting its end.

Separated at Birth

If you're interested in identical twins, this story will interest you. One set of identical twin boys was separated at birth. Unbeknownst to each other or the respective families, the boys were both named James: James Lewis and James Springer. The boys grew up without meeting each other. However, they developed similar abilities. They both possessed mechanical drawing skills and were adept in carpentry. They each married women named Linda. They both divorced and remarried, each of them to a woman named Betty. Forty years after being separated, they were reunited to tell their remarkable stories.

The 21st was a Bad Day

Early on in his life, an astrologer told King Louis XVI that the 21st was going to be a bad day for him. Because of this prophecy, he was to on guard on the 21st day of every month. He was so terrified of the day, in fact, that he never conducted any business on the 21st of any month. However, despite the fact he was almost always on guard, the 21st day did turn out to be a bad one for him. On June 21, 1791, he was arrested along with his wife while trying to escape France. On September 21, 1791, France declared itself a republic. Finally, on January 21, 1973, Louis was executed via the guillotine.

Haley's Comet and Mark Twain

Mark Twain, the famous American author, was born on November 20, 1835, the night that Haley's Comet appeared. In 1909, he predicted that he would die on the day of the Comet's next appearance in 1910. Twain said"I came in with Haley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it."In the end, he did, in fact, fulfill his own prophecy.

The world is full of astonishing coincidences that seem to defy all logic. You can chalk it up to being in the right (or wrong) place at the right time. Maybe you believe it is something more indefinable. You can be certain, though, that these unbelievable but true stories will always be stranger than fiction.

PoliticsWada Picks PDP Nomination Form by catchfun(op): 5:46am On Aug 20, 2015
Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, has formally announced his intention to vie for his second term in office on the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he had to bow to pressure from the party elders and stakeholders in state.
Captain Wada made the speech on Wednesday in Lokoja in a meeting with members of PDP elders and critical stakeholders.
According to him: “ The words of our elders are words of wisdom, I have come to appreciate in the last few weeks that before elders speak, they must have employed experience, patience, candour and courage.
“This latest gesture from our leaders has added to the weight of responsibility that I shoulder. My pledge and response is to surpass your expectations, God helping me.” He stated.
Earlier, the PDP stakeholders chaired by the former deputy governor of the old Benue State, Alhaji Sule Iyaji, called on Wada to seek re-election based on his track records of achievements in the state.
Also, the critical stakeholders from the three senatorial district, and the Elders Advisory Council, have unanimously endorsed the re-election bid for another term in office for Capt Idris Wada and also adopted him as the party’s sole candidate in the forth-coming governorship election slated for November 21, 2015.
The stakeholders have also adopted Capt Wada as the sole candidate of the party for the governorship election even as power rotation has been entrenched in the state.
The meeting added that after the tenure of the incumbent, power should rotate between the west and central senatorial district of the state.
The decision to adopt Capt Wada, according to Alhaji Iyaji, was borne out of his modest performance in the last three and half years.
Those present at the meeting were Alh Sule Iyaji, Chief Patrick Adaba, Prince Olushola Akanmode, the Speaker Kogi State House of Assembly, and a host of other party faithful.
Meanwhile, arrangement has been concluded by the Elders Council and the critical stakeholders to procure the nomination form for the governor at the PDP headquarters Abuja tomorrow.

PoliticsAmbode Cancels Concession For Falomo Shopping Centre With Elumelu’s Company by catchfun(op): 5:40am On Aug 20, 2015
The Lagos State Government yesterday terminated the concession agreement for the redevelopment of Falomo Shopping Centre in Ikoyi, stating that the agreement was detrimental to the interest of its residents.
The state government added that one of its agencies, the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), entered into the agreement in July 2013 to redevelop the shopping centre with Afriland Properties Plc, a member of Heirs Holdings Group founded by Mr. Tony Elumelu.
The state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, disclosed the decision in a statement to terminate the concession agreement with Afriland Properties Plc with a portfolio size of over N10 billion.
Giving a reason for terminating the concession, the Lagos governor cited the terms and conditions of the agreement, stating that they “are grossly detrimental to the interest of the people of the state”.
The governor also said the concession agreement with Afriland Properties Plc (concessionaire) was carried out in a hurry without taking cognisance of its costs and benefits to the interest of the people of the state.
The governor said only N50 million was paid by the concessionaire for a 50-year lease of the property belonging to the state government.
He explained that the state government as custodian of the interests of Lagos residents “is committed to the restructuring of LSDPC to ensure it begins to provide positive capital returns to the state government for the ultimate benefit of the people”.
When the contract for the redevelopment of the shopping centre was signed, Heirs Holdings and LSDPC said the new development would boast a state-of-the-art shopping mall, an office complex and luxury residential apartments. But no completion date was given for the project.
The old Falomo Shopping Centre was built by LSDPC in the 1970s and included a 10-storey building, which currently serves as the headquarters of MTN Nigeria, and an adjourning uncompleted building behind the complex.
However, the complex, due to poor facility management, lost most of its upscale tenants over the years, leaving behind only two original tenants – Quintessence, an art shop, and Glendora bookshop. Both shops eventually moved out when the concession agreement was signed in 2013.
Ambode, two months ago, relieved the former Managing Director of the LSDPC, Mr. Biodun Oki, of his appointment and appointed Mr. Jacob Agosu as the acting CEO of the corporation.
He said, the new appointment was meant to stem the tide of negative capital returns of the corporation.

PoliticsStop Calling Buhari ‘baba Go Slow,’ Dickson Warns by catchfun(op): 6:11am On Aug 19, 2015
The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has said it is wrong for some Nigerians to call President Muhammadu Buhari “Baba go slow,” adding that such a derisive appellation demeans the office of the President in the eyes of the international community.
Speaking during a news conference at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday, Dickson said that calling the President derogatory names was bad politicking.
He also condemned those who referred to former President Goodluck Jonathan as “clueless,” saying it was wrong to demean the occupier of the highest office in the land.
The governor, whose tenure expires on February 28, 2016, has yet to formally declare his intention to seek re-election in the December 5, 2015 governorship election coming up in the state.
He said, “What are you saying when you call President Buhari ‘Baba go slow?’ In what light are you putting the President before the international community? When you refer to someone as ‘clueless’, what do you mean?”
Dickson explained that politics must be played with honour, dignity and integrity, stressing that the best way to develop the country was for the opposition and the ruling party to interrogate ideas and put the interest of the nation first always.
“We should pray for our leaders. We should support them. Bad politics is not good,” he said.
He dismissed the insinuation that the wife of former President Jonathan, Patience, was sponsoring a candidate in the All Progressives Congress against his governorship ambition.
“Patience Jonathan is not my enemy. I’m not aware she’s sponsoring any candidate against me. Former President Jonathan believes I should be re-elected. He is my elder brother.”
Dismissing the wave of defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in the state, the governor said the defection was inspired by greed, ambition and personal interests.
He said, “All those who defected are my contractors. Would you call someone who gave you a contract your enemy? They are positioning themselves for federal appointments, as my party cannot give them that.
“I have faced stiffer opposition in the past and I came out victorious. The PDP is solidly on the ground in Bayelsa and nothing can shake it. In the past 16 years, Bayelsa has always been with the ruling party. That is why some of them are going to the APC. It’s all part of politics. The defectors are not my enemies.”

CrimeVietnam Court Sentences Nigerian To Death by catchfun(op): 5:30am On Aug 19, 2015
A Vietnam court has commuted a death sentence previously handed to 33 years old Nigerian, Ejiogu Benjamin Ikechukwu, for bringing methamphetamine into Vietnam, to life imprisonment.
Ikechukwu was in June 2012, apprehended with 3.3 kilograms of the banned drug concealed in metal tubes and a laptop charger in his luggage as he flew to Tan Son Nhat in Vietnam.
When he was arrested, Ikechukwu said he only planned to come to Vietnam to buy clothes to resell them in Nigeria and had no idea about the drug in his luggage.
According to him, a man asked him to carry the tubes and the charger to Vietnam and that someone would pick them up.
A Vietnam court heard the case brought against him by Vietnam police in August 2013 and sentenced him to death, but he appealed the verdict. Vietnam Supreme Court then cancelled the verdict, ordering a new investigation. Investigators could not track down the people who had used him as a drug mule.
According to Vietnam law, anyone convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine in Vietnam would face a death penalty

PoliticsKachikwu Pledges To Open NNPC’S Books For Public Scrutiny by catchfun(op): 5:19am On Aug 19, 2015
The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has stated his resolve to usher in a new dawn of transparency through the periodic publications of the Corporation’s financial transaction, insisting that transparency must be the watchword of every staff in the new NNPC.
Dr. Kachikwu, who stated this at his maiden Town Hall meeting with the staff of the Corporation at the NNPC Towers, Abuja, said the new NNPC of his dream is a Corporation anchored on the foundation of transparency.
Charging the staff to break away from the old culture and bring creative solutions to the numerous challenges facing the Corporation, the GMD said with the kind of change he has in mind the staff could not afford to continue with business as usual.
He challenged staff not to obey any directive from him or any superior officer that runs contrary to the rules, adding that President Mohamadu Buhari will not ask him to do anything shady just as he himself would not ask any staff to carry out any unlawful duties.
“I want transparency. Beginning from next month, I want to be able to publish what the company makes. I have told the President that as from next week I will be sending him weekly reports,” he said.
Speaking further on the culture of transparency, he said it should begin with establishing the current financial status of the Corporation and that he would sign on auditors “to do a proper forensic audit to tell us where we are.”
He promised to revisit old processes that used to make for efficient operations, adding that staff should see themselves the drivers of the changes required to bring about the new NNPC.
“You are the best consultants there are. While there may be need to refer certain issues to consultants, ultimately you are the ones who will implement whatever recommendations they come up with; you are the ones who have been around and who understand the system and so you are the ones who should drive the change,” he charged the staff.
He said the change would be anchored on three key issues of people, processes, and profit, adding that the people element was key to the success of the other two elements which was the reason personnel motivation was dear to his heart.
He dismissed reports that he was out to sack 1000 staff and that nothing could be farther from the truth as he needed quality staff to drive the processes and business in the new NNPC.
Speaking on behalf of members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association, PENGASSAN, Comrade Francis Johnson, pledged the readiness of NNPC staff with the GMD to achieve the Federal Government’s reform agenda for the Corporation and the oil and gas industry at large.
Echoing the position of the PENGASSAN President, Comrade Igwe Achese, President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, said that as a group, the union has implicit confidence in the ability of the new GMD to deliver on the President Mohammadu Buhari reform agenda in the oil and gas industry.
