LordofNairaland: Justdulla, how dare you call an unstable man as Nzeogwu the hero of democracy. A man who lost it and went on a shooting spree and leading the bloodiest coup the country ever witnessed. And who told you everyone killed in that coup was corrupt? He even killed the wife of one of his targets. Nzeogwu was mad. He wanted to change the corrupt system but he took it too far. There was too much killing in that coup. Too much senseless bloodshed. You are a bloody foool for calling a coup in which about 12 persons lost their lives the bloodiest coup in Nigeria. So what was the July 29th, 1966 coup? A coup in which over 800 officers and men of the Nigerian Army mainly Igbos & Easterners died in cold blood? A coup that went on to become a pogrom against the same Igbos and Easterners during which the Makurdi bridge was hijacked by Northern troops and fleeing Igbo soldiers were killed and thrown into the River Benue? A pogrom that led to the death of close to one hundred thousand Igbos. The coup in itself was meant to be a secessionist coup by the North until the British Establishment called the Northern savages to order telling them of the oil wealth down South and how their proposed Arewa Republic would be landlocked. My friend go and read! You are so sooooo dumb! |

olasaad: So you don't know the reason again. Well that's why the coup was tag tribalism. And you forgot the coup plotters also spare Nnamdi Azikiwe...lol don't be hypocrite So all the other coups that happened in Nigeria thereafter were what? Nigerian coups? For your information, Aguiyi Ironsi was tipped off by Yakubu Pam shortly b4 he was arrested and he was one step ahead of the coupists thereby slipping through their fingers! As for Michael Okpara, he had the President of Cyprus in his residence that fateful night and as such the soldiers couldn't shoot their way in. They however placed him on house arrest. Nnamdi Azikiwe was away in London for medical reasons. Also Lt Col. Arthur Unegbe an Igbo & Quarter Master General of the Nigerian Army at the time was killed by Major Christian Anuforo. All those killed were because of their strategic importance which they would have used to suppress the coup from gaining momentum and not out of tribal hate or considerations! The problem with most Nigerians is that they don't read and just make uninformed remarks on topical issues without knowing that they are adding more to the problems instead of solving them. You are such a daft young man, ur education if you ever had any is a colossal waste! Go and read literature on the Nzeogwu coup as well as the pogroms & the Nigerian civil war! They are in the bookshops and are very affordable. You could also download them online and stop disgracing yourself on social media. Anu ofia! |

TruthNigeria: By Vincent Ujumadu, Awka AFTER years of uncertainty, work has finally begun for the construction of the controversial 2nd Niger Bridge that would link the South –South and the South East geo political zones to support the existing one. Following a statement by the minister of labour and employment, Senator Chris Ngige Saturday in a television programme in Onitsha, that the federal executive council had approved N14 billion to enable Julius , the contractor handling the project, to commence work, Saturday Vanguard visited the site and found out that there were serious signs that work would begin in earnest.
Some people, who looked like construction workers were seen yesterday, surveying the area where former President Goodluck Jonathan performed the ground- breaking ceremony during the twilight of his administration. Many job seekers were also seen in the area, although there was nobody to attend to them yet. The bridge had been enmeshed in politics over the years such that it had remained on the drawing board for a period that spanned several administrations. Ngige had said during the television interview that in addition to the N14 billion, the federal government would release another N16 billion this year for the construction of the bridge, adding that the amount was accommodated in the 2017 budget. He said that the redesigned bridge would have a railway line that would connect Asaba in Delta State with Onitsha in Anambra State to ease the pressure of heavy duty vehicles using the bridge to transport goods. However, one nagging issue facing the project is the payment of compensation to people whose property would be affected by the bridge. Though arrangement for the compensation had been made, Ngige urged the people not to stand in the way of the project by making what he called unnecessary demands. “This is a project that previous administrations played politics with and the present administration under President Muhammadu Buhari has decided to ensure its realization. Our people should not allow the issue of compensation to hinder the construction work because of its enormous benefits to the people,” the minister said. He said that apart from the 2nd Niger Bridge, work had also started on the Enugu-Onitsha and Nnewi- Okigwe federal highways, as well as the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway
Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/01/last-work-begins-2nd-niger-bridge/ Point of correction, that bridge also links the South to the North not only SE to SS. Please you guys should stop all these politics! With regards to compensation, thought that should have been factored into the cost of the bridge from the start? So why is Ngige talking nonsense? SmartyPants: What you have presented is an official account of history as told by some of those involved. But there are several reasons to advance the theory that this was indeed an igbo coup:
1. The ringleaders were majorly igbo and almost exclusively southern. Note that the Nzeogwu was a very late addition to the coup and while he seemed to have executed his role with precision and some patriotism, it is thought that his own goals may have differed from those of the original plotters.
2. Aguiyi Ironsi was theoretically to be killed by Immanuel Ifeajuna who was particularly ruthless. Why was he spared? One possible answer is that he was in on it all along. The coup plotters showed very little restraint at bloodletting on that particular night so why didnt they go after Gen. Ironsi?
3. in the aftermath of the coup Igbos in the north openly taunted their hausa counterparts. In fact, a song was made mocking the sardauna's manner of death. The aftermath of the coup was certainly much more pleasing to the Igbo part of the country than to any other.
4. President Nnamdi Azikwe who traveled for health reasons far overstayed the planned duration of his trip because he knew of the coup, having been warned. Yet he refused to tip-off the Prime minister, Sir Abubakar Balewa, his northern counterpart.
5. In the final analysis, an Igbo dominated group of officers executed a group of non-igbo military, political and cultural leaders, taking care t protect their tribesmen of similar political, military and cultural standing, much to the joy and celebration of large numbers of the Igbo population, culminating in the installation of an Igbo officer as president.
How was this not an Igbo coup? Why do you people always like distorting history? Go and read Adewale Ademoyega's WHY WE STRUCK. Nzeogwu, Ifeajuna and Ademoyega were the originators of the coup! Stop misinforming the public ok? On the question of Igbo coup or not, don't the Igbo have a right to stage a coup or revolution in their own country? Or are they not Nigerians again? So all the other coups that occurred in Nigeria were what? Maybe the Dimka coup was a Plateau coup, Orkar's coup was a Tiv coup, Vatsa's coup a Gwari/Nupe coup abi? You people are just mad! Let it be on record that the Nzeogwu group never planned to eliminate any particular tribe, all the killings were done to facilitate and enable their coup gain momentum. Just a twist of fate that Ironsi slipped through their fingers! You guys should stop hating the Igbos unduly, it's becoming nauseating! Go read Why we struck and Nigeria's Five Majors by Ben Gbulie another of the Nzeogwu boys. Get informed! Knowledge is power my friend! While ignorance is bliss in stupidity! Shalom! |

zendy: You are not answering my question. My question is, in the event that Nigeria never restructures, what is the alternative? Do you accept the status quo?
People have been talking about restructuring since Aburi in 1967, guess what? It has come to nothing. The restructuring you are talking cannot be achieved without constitutional change. To change the constitution, you need a a 2 thirds majority vote in the national assembly. With the North controling nearly 63% of the national assembly vote as opposed to just 37% for the south, how will restructuring ever happen? Or you believe the North will one allow anyone to control their resources, particulary Oil & Gas. This is not about Biafra, this is about the reality on the ground. God bless you my brother! But the big questions I want to ask every true and patriotic Nigerian are; must Nigeria divide into so many various countries? Why can't we simply divide into two as we were prior to the January 1st, 1914 Amalgamation by Lord Lugard? Why is it so sooo difficult for the Southern tribes to demand for a Southern Nigeria Republic? I think it would make more sense to the General Assembly of the United Nations if such a demand is presented to it. All this Biafra, Niger Delta, Oduduwa Republics to me is bullshit. Let's just split Nigeria into two with Lagos as our capital in the South! PERIOD! |

RockHard: Crap. Everyone knows that even that 2006 census was a fraud. Nigeria has always politicized population censuses for obvious reasons. But Thank God there are other data sources that give a ballpark extrapolated estimate of current states populations, like the one below gotten from the Telcos, courtesy of the same NBS, where you can easily deduce the most populated states in the country. The good thing about these sort of numbers is that they're devoid of ethnic/tribal, political or sentimental colorations that have always plagued national censuses. These are reliable enough data that points to the actual estimated population of each state as at today, whichever way one chooses to slice or dice it (you can choose to add 1 or 2 million to any of those numbers, doesn't make much difference in the end):
http://www.nigerianstat.gov.ng/report/486 God bless you my brother! The table gives a truer and fairer view of the population of the various states. Even then, when you want to go into the nitty gritty of ethnic origin, the SE States are depleted heavily because the Igbos travel a lot and are scattered all over the country and beyond in their millions! For instance, the Igbos make up almost half the population of Lagos, close to 35 percent of the population in such Northern cities like Jos, Kaduna, Abuja and Kano. So the Northern establishment shd stop this population war as it were cos it's of no use! The Hausa/ Fulani are not more than the Igbos in numbers so they should forget that pipe dream unless they are planning to reenact the pogroms of 1966! It's high time our population census documentation forms carry such things as religion/ Faith, tribe, tongue or ethnic group, state of residence and state of nativity that would be wired and saved permanently in a central data bank in Abuja with back up in Lagos, Kaduna and Enugu just in case. This way, we can better analyse our population figures for more meaningful development instead of making wild guesses with regards to our population and its various components like number of Christians, Muslims, Yoruba, Tiv, Igbos, Hausas, Efiks, Ijaws etc. all the time. We need to know our population in and out for proper planning and futuristic forecasting. The major problem we have is that our leaders are parochial and unpatriotic! Till we get patriotic leaders at the helm, we will continue going around in circles. A case of so much locomotion yet no movement! An ironical paradox if you ask me! |
Politics › Re: By NBS Estimates, Nigeria’s Population Now 193.3 Million. Kano State Leads by ceejay4real(m): 11:32am On Dec 30, 2016 |
Buyeradvertcom: National Population Commission (NPC) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have put the current figure of Nigeria’s population at 193,392,517. This is just as the Federal Government proposed a total budget of N9.799 billion for the NPC in 2017, which, according to the sources, is a little above the United Nations’ estimate of 186,988,000.
It will be recalled that the national population census was last conducted in Nigeria in 2006 when the total figure was put at 140,431,790.
According to the latest population forecasts released by NBS, in its website www.nigerianstat.gov.ng, Kano remains the largest state, by an estimated population figure of 13,076,892 than the population of Lagos which is put at 9,113,605.
However, there exists a sharp contradiction in the actual population figure of Lagos, as both the United Nations and Lagos State government put the population of Nigeria’s commercial capital at about 22 million.
The 2006 census figures put Kano population at 9,401,288 and that of Lagos at 12,550,598.
Some highlights of the latest estimates indicated that there are 98,630,184 males with 94,762,333 females.
Also, the population figure of infants within the age bracket of zero to four years, according to NBC and NBS, constituted the largest percentage of the population with 31,116,156, followed by the figure of those between five to nine years with a population of 27,549,964.
An analysis of the figures showed that Nigeria currently had an estimated population figure of 78,971,690 of those between the ages of 15 to 39.
According to the analysis, there were 106,257,431 people within the working population of 15 to 64 years.
It also showed that despite Boko Haram insurgency, which has ravaged substantial parts of the North-East since 2010, the population figure increased substantially.
From a population of 21,614,789 in 2010, the six states of the North-East is currently put at 26,263,866.
Six south-west states of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti states, according to the analysis, grew from 31,533,821 in 2010 to 38,257,260.
The analysis also showed that Kaduna retains its position as third most populated state with 8,252,366 inhabitants followed by Oyo with current population estimate of 7,840,864, which outpaced Katsina now with a figure of 7,831,319.
In 2006, Katsina’s population followed that of Kaduna State while Oyo was in the fifth place.
Bayelsa maintains its position as the least populated of the 36 states of the federation with an estimated figure of 2,277,961.
Anambra is the most populated state in the south-east with 5,527,809 inhabitants while Rivers State leads in the south-south region with 5,198,716 people.
For the north-east, Bauchi is the largest state in terms of population with a figure of 4,653,066 while in the case of the north central, Benue leads with 5,741,815 inhabitants.
According to the details of 2017 budget proposal submitted to National Assembly, by President Muhammadu Buhari, NPC will fully commence preparation for 2018 population census during 2017.
A stakeholders’ conference to present the 2018 census instrument to gulp N50 million, would hold during the year while N41.7 million has been earmarked for training of staff in Washington, for data collection and interviewing techniques.
There is also a proposal for N1.950 billion to be spent on field demarcation and another N1 billion is expected to be deployed to acquiring satellite imagery.
http://tribuneonlineng.com/nbs-estimates-nigerias-population-now-193-3-million/ Why is the North always lying about Kano's population? The UN and World Bank estimate Lagos' population at about 21 million and the NPC is telling us 9 point something?
