El-Rufai threatens to sue newspaper over story on assets declaration Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Wednesday, appointed a Special Assistant on Persons with Disability, apparently in reaction to threats by beggars in the state to bring down his government. The appointment was announced in a statement signed by the governor’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, stating that El Rufai has appointed Aliyu Muhammed Salisu as his Special Assistant on Persons with Disability. Salisu, an indigene of Sabon Gari, Zaria, holds a diploma in Special Education from Kaduna Polytechnic and another diploma in Guidance and Counseling from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. A member of the National Association of the Blind, Salisu has worked at the Kaduna State Rehabilitation Centre and is the chairman of the Braille Production Centre in Kaduna. We recalls that beggars in the state had threatened to bring the Kaduna State government if it refuses to reverse its order on the ban on street begging without providing an alternative means of income for them. “We decided to support El Rufai, because we were tired of the then Governor, (Mukhtar Ramalan Yero) who did not show any regards to our survival. We worked hard, spent money and prayed and God heard our prayers and brought down Yero. “Now, it would appear that we made a mistake. The new governor wants to bring us down. He does not want us to live. He has chased us out of the streets and has made no alternative arrangement for our survival. “We are asking the governor to rescind this decision now or find ways to meet our basic needs. “If he refuses to heed to this demand, we shall make sure we bring down his government. We are not going to pray that he dies, even if he wishes us so. We are not going to say that he should be impeached, because we voted him to power. What we will do is to hand him over to the Almighty God, and we know he will remove him the same way he removed the former person. We are servants of God, and he always hears our cry,” the Kaduna State Beggars Association had said in a statement on Monday. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/el-rufai-appoints-special-assistant-on.html cc: lalasticlala ishilove |

According to sources, police officers and soldiers were deployed immediately to Alagbado when the hotelier was murdered to forestall violence in the community. Police patrol vans also moved freely in the community incase his boys were planning to retaliate so that the attack could easily be curbed. Police vans were also stationed at the front of his two hotels and major junctions in the area. Sources said the police officers deployed to his hotels were still spotted there as far as Friday even though he was murdered on Monday. Continue... A lot of shop owners didn’t open in the area, especially at moshalashi bus stop, the area he was murdered till this week for fear of being attacked, a source said. So far a traditional ruler, the Baale of Temidire Alagbado, his son, and nine others have been arrested in connection of his murder. And like we broke the news of his death, we can still tell you authoritatively that Alhaji Tunji Alaso was stabbed to death and was never shot like many reported. Though a Muslim, he is yet to be buried, because the Police are still investigating the matter. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/nine-days-after-alhaji-gays-death.html cc: lalasticlala ishilove |

President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that there is not enough fire power to support ground troops to decimate the terrorists. Speaking on Good Morning Nigeria on NTA this morning, the President said, ''The Airforce is virtually non-existent. The fixed wings aircraft are not very serviceable. The helicopters are not serviceable and they are too few. ''We need Airforce to conduct reconnaissance and support the ground troops. The arrangement made by the former government will soon expire. We have made this clear to the Americans and we have made it clear to G7 and we need their cooperation. The President however, failed to disclose if Nigeria will be getting military equipment from the US. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/the-nigerian-airforce-is-virtually-non.html cc: lalasticlala ishilove |

It is well-known that Africa is a continent with a high potential and extremely rich natural resources. Can you imagine how rich African countries’ leaders are? The Africa Review notes that only a few countries make public what they pay their leaders and in many African countries, the first thing leaders do when they come into power is to increase their pay. “In Egypt, for instance, the president’s pay shot up from a paltry $280 per month, put in place by the austere Mohammed Morsy administration, to $5,900 per month just before General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi predictably won an election,” it states. The source says that some leaders take a disproportionate share of the national income for their personal use. “In Morocco, the Treasury spends, by one account, $1 million a day for King Mohammed VI’s 12 royal palaces and 30 private residences. That is on top of $7.7 million spent on an entourage of royal automobiles, and a monthly salary of $40,000 paid to the monarch,” the estimates show. According to the analysis some presidents have deceptively small salaries but have, personally or through family members, massive control over their countries’ resources. The source says: “For example, President Eduardo dos Santos has a modest monthly salary of $5,000 but is widely believed to control a lot of the wealth produced from Angola’s oil-industry, and his family members own some of the biggest enterprises in the country.” However, it should be noted that salaries do not tell the whole story and some of the presidents believed to have the highest personal wealth, do not even feature in the top 10. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/the-10-highest-paid-african-presidents.html

Just got photos from the scene of the accident that killed him. The accident happened just a few kilometers from his house. He got the news of his withdrawal from the medical school two days ago and told his friends he no longer had any reason to live. He then drank a lot, drove at high speed without wearing his seat belt, entered a sharp bend and straight to a curvet and hit a passerby. He and the passerby died on the spot. President Barack Obama of the United States will visit the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia on Tuesday. Upon arriving the AU headquarters, Obama, who will be the first US president to visit the AU, will hold a bilateral meeting with Nkosazana Zuma, chairman of AU, and some commissioners of the union. Obama is also due to deliver a speech to the continent from the Nelson Mandela Hall at the AU conference centre in Addis Ababa. “This is an historic visit to the African Union. And it will be my great pleasure to welcome President Barack Obama to the AU,” Zuma said. “It is also another concrete step to broaden and deepen the relationship between the AU and the US.” During the visit, the AU chairperson will take the opportunity to present Africa’s priority areas as articulated in the agenda 2063 framework document and the 10-year implementation plan aimed at achieving Africa’s vision for prosperity, integration and peace. In June 2013 when Obama met with some AU commissioners, he pledged to strengthen Africa-US relations. “We stand ready and eager to work with the African Union for the best engagement of the United States with Africa,” he had said. “If there is a strong African Union, any help that is provided by the US becomes more effective than us doing things on our own.” The visit will offer the opportunity for Zuma and Obama to further the discussions held two years ago. Among the important issues will be skills revolution to provide the youth with employment opportunities; industrialisation and infrastructiural development and agro-processing. In addition, expected to feature in both the bilateral and the speeches are issues around, but not limited to, education, youth and women’s empowerment, trade, investment, and peace and security, particularly the fight against terrorism and extremism. The AU commission will also be engaging and discussing with a delegation of senators and congressmen travelling with the US president. Obama will arrive Ethiopia after participating at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. Previous visits of Obama to Africa are: Egypt in June 2009, Ghana in July 2009, South Africa, Senegal and Tanzania in 2013. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/obama-set-to-visit-au-headquarters-on.html cc: lalasticlala ishilove |

Patrick Leahy, an American Senator who sponsored the Leahy Law says that President Muhammadu Buhari should not blame the United States for not choosing to support the Nigerian Army. The Leahy amendment prohibits the US Department of State and Department of Defence from providing military assistance to foreign military units that violate human rights with impunity. Owing to the fact that the Nigerian military has been accused of alleged human rights crimes in its war against Boko Haram, the United States had refused to give the country the required assistance. President Buhari had said on Wednesday, July 22, at the United States Institute for Peace that the law “aided and abetted” the campaign of bloodletting of Boko Haram. In a response posted on his website, Senator Leahy said he could not be blamed for the atrocities committed by the murderers and rapists in the Nigerian military. He said: “It is well-documented by the State Department and by respected human rights organisations that Nigerian army personnel have, for many years, engaged in a pattern and practice of gross violations of human rights against the Nigerian people and others, including summary executions of prisoners, indiscriminate attacks against civilians, torture, forced disappearances and rape. Rarely have the perpetrators been prosecuted or punished.” “This abusive conduct not only violates the laws of war, it creates fear and loathing among the Nigerian people whose support is necessary to defeat a terrorist group like Boko Haram. “President Buhari ignores the undisputed fact that most Nigerian army units have been approved, under the Leahy Law, for U.S. training and equipment. Only those particular units against which there is credible evidence of the most heinous crimes are ineligible for U.S. aid. And even those units can again become eligible if the Nigerian Government takes effective steps to bring the responsible individuals to justice. “I strongly agree with President Buhari about the need to defeat Boko Haram, and I have supported tens of millions of dollars in U.S. aid to Nigeria for that purpose. But rather than suggest that the United States is at fault for not funding murderers and rapists in the Nigerian military, he should face up to his own responsibility to effectively counter Boko Haram. He should direct his attention to the Nigerian military, and the Nigerian courts, and clean up the units implicated in such atrocities.” http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/dont-blame-us-for-not-supporting.html cc: lalasticlala ishilove |
