brojoes5030:
A bright doctor from the West African country of Nigeria Babafemi Taiwo is leading part of a major study on antiviral drug Remdesivir appearing to treat COVID-19, the potentially deadly respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, which has killed more than 200,000 people around the world.

CNN interviewed Dr. Taiwo, whose name suggests he is a twin from the southwestern part of Nigeria, to discuss the promising results. Remdesivir, the antiviral drug made by Gilead Sciences, appears to help coronavirus patients recover more quickly than no treatment at all, but it does not significantly reduce death, according to preliminary data......

https://pepedem.com/coronavirus/nigerian-doctor-in-u-s-babafemi-taiwo-is-leading-major-study-on-remdesivir-covid-19-drug/

The person who reported this story is all shades of daft. Is Taiwo his first name or surname? How does it suggest he is a twin, if his surname is Taiwo?

And what does where he comes from in Nigeria have to do with the subject?

The man is a Nigerian! Period! Stop speculating about whether he is a twin or triplet or whatever....!

As a romantic Nigerian husband or single guy, you might want to get this specially produced car from the Japanese automaker for your heartthrob. On a serious note, since the trademarked corporate name of "Nairaland" was wantonly INVOKED by US law enforcement agencies in their official investigative reports about this notorious WAYO MAN, logic dictates that Nairaland's Exalted Chairman, the elusive and shadowy Oga-Patapata Double-Chief Seun, is now legally ENTITLED to generous ROYALTIES, copyright infringement SETTLEMENTS and auto-renewable annual SUBSCRIPTIONS for rights to publish the Nairaland brand name in the text of any FUTURE such investigative documentation, by any law enforcement or news dissemination entity worldwide.

Romance / Re: I'm Depressed. I Need Help Before I Commit Suicide [PICTURE] by CeterisXVIII: 3:21pm On Aug 21, 2019
iLegendd:
To those who don't know the reason I wanted to take my life via suicide, I'll explain.

I copied a thread I made here on Nairaland (that got me abused by men of "Depressed Association of Nigeria" — D.A.N) and turned it to a book on the month of July.

In that month, July, the book made me just 200k profit. The kindle version was priced at $9.99 while the paperback was $19.99.

This month, I decided to reduce the price (as an experiment) to $2.99 and $12.99 respectively.

By this time last month, it had already made N100,000.00. But with the price reduction this month, it made only $100 so far — which is 36k. I have lost 64k already this month.

Though, this is a new account which I'm using to conduct experiments because of my upcoming "12 Kindle Book Series" that teaches everything you need to know about book publishing business from scratch and from someone who had failed for 3 good years, then finally discovered the secrets most gurus don't even know about.

Book 1 starts by telling my stories and the journey.
Book 2 deals on keyword and niche research like a pro.
...
Book 3 (removed)
Book 4 (removed)
Book 5 (removed)
Book 6 (removed)

Book 7 (Greatest copywriting book description secrets that'll make even the devil want to read your book after reading your description)

Book 8 (removed)
Book 9 (removed)
Book 10 (removed)
Book 11 (removed)

Book 12 Audio book publishing

Bonus: 1, 2, & 3 (removed)

So, what you're seeing is the journey of creating this series. Before the series is ready, the journey must've generated a couple of millions itself.

My plan is to make 1 book generate 1 million or more per month. Most people who haven't failed like I did 3 years ago will think it's impossible, but in my world, impossible stands for "I'm possible."

Note: This 200k (last month) was made without a single review. Even now as I type, the book has zero reviews. By September or October, I'll make sure it gets 10 — 30 reviews and watch the dynamic of sales.

Review gives social proof, but this book doesn't have it, yet it's making sales without reviews, promo, or ads.

What is the secret? KEYWORD, Cover, and Captivating description with pro-copywriting techniques.

Oh, I forgot to say, "The content is lit and engaging."

Making millions from book writing is not hard. What is hard is just the initial stage of understanding the business. Those who don't give up will reap the fruit of their persistence and endurance one day.

Remember, Nigerian politicians won't make the country better even in 100 years from now (they're all self-centered), so the nation won't be great any time soon — and there will be hunger and lack of job, but too many degree and crimes.

This is an opportunity for you to become a millionaire while at the comfort of your home.

The reason you see some people attack me on NL is not because they hate me, but because they envy me and my persistence / resilience.

This is exactly what I want for you. I want you to keep pushing and don't worry about hatred or envy from D.A.N.

The more you show your success or road to success, the more depressed they become and the lazier they feel the are — which is true — they are truly lazy (just like me #smile).

You see how some people from Depressed Association of Nigeria, D.A.N, stalk me? Yes, that's part of copywriting.

You embed subtle commands and their subconscious minds pick them and start acting the way you want. It's not manipulation, but it's being ahead of the game.

Those ahead of the game are the kings. You can't be a God, but you can dine with the kings who have a direct contact with God.

When you have a direct contact with God, obstacles become miracles and miracles become blessings to humanity.

Don't be digitally wayward, but a blessing to humanity.
Who are those that do the review? Do you engage them to write the reviews, or do they just do it on their own? Are they paid to write the reviews?

Insightful analysis.

I think it's more on the lack of a proper succession plan and good corporate governance. It's not like there aren't enough qualified individuals to be at the helms of affairs but when you have persons who will not mind running the business down because "no be my papa property/business" or use the revenue to build theirs even while being paid, then the founders have no choice than to bequeath ownership to their children. I'm of the opinion that before ownership is handed over to the children, non-family members should manage the business for at least a decade. It's even better to employ foreigners as executives so as to forestall familiarity or tribal relationship.

Regarding children (foreign or local educated) not being interested in their parents' enterprises, well, they (children) have their dreams and aspirations to fulfill which might be in tandem with their family's business. The solution?

Recruit foreigners (other Africans included) as managers.
I agree that qualified professionals should be employed to run the business, but with what I have seen in many locally owned firms, the business owners often interfere in the business to a very large extent, even when such businesses are being managed by others. undecided

The best thing is to put the right structures in place, and give the most qualified professionals a free hand to run the company, while being answerable to the board and shareholders of the firm.

No one is saying that the children should forget their own aspirations to run the family businesses, but such kids can serve in an advisory capacity or recruit the best hands they can find to run their father's business after his demise, while they take on a non-executive board role. sad

I believe it is wrong for kids to just totally abandon the businesses their father's struggled hard to build, or just turn their back on it.

Who would then ensure that the father's business legacy is sustained?

Why are family legacies kept? Who does the keeping or sustaining of such legacies, if not the family?

In many parts of Asia and Western Europe, family businesses still thrive, long after their owners have departed. What are they doing right, that we have failed to see? shocked

Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer and most successful family business of all time. Rob Walton and John Walton took over their father's business and ran it successfully. The other children are not involved in the business, but retain their shareholding and voting rights, in the enterprise.

Lee Kun-Hee grew his father's business Samsung Group into a global conglomerate from the small industrial complex his father left behind. His family still owns most of the shares in Samsung Group till today and his children sit on the board, too.

Fritz Hofmann-La Roche founded Roche Pharmaceuticals many years back. Today, his family (the Hoffmann-Oeris) still owns a large stock of the company's shares, and his children are multimillionaires who have voting control at board level. The company is worth 254 billion USD dollars, today.

Roche founded a cough syrup company that today develops some of the best cancer drugs in the world. The Hoffmann-Oeri family controls the company through their voting pool. The family has at least eight billionaires, including Dr. Andreas Oeri and André Hoffmann who both sit on the drugmaker's Board of Directors. https://www.businessinsider.com/the-worlds-21-biggest-family-owned-businesses-2015-7?IR=T#3-walmart-19

I was surprised to read that too... Maybe the companies there need to follow the approach of Dangote, Flour Mills and other companies which they used to construct the Apapa-Wharf Road, they signed a MOU for tax holiday while they construct the road using their monies, imagine wasting precious time on a 10-20mins road to Lagos.
Honestly, that would be a good way to go! shocked I keep saying that successive Ogun State governments have not taken advantage of their proximity to Lagos, to jump start development in their state.

Even the Ogun waterside is just 20 minutes by boat across the waterways to Lekki area in Lagos. They can get private investors to partner with them to do this! sad

Naira was stronger than the pounds.. Several multi national companies were starting up and needed indigenous distributors to work with.
Banks would give loans if you had a genuine business they could finance, especially import business.
Very true! cool Yes.... the Nigerian currency was much stronger in the 70s and 80s. One naira was equivalent of 0.80 cents in the 70s. While the Nigerian Naira back then was as strong as the British pound.

People were far more honest, and sales on credit thrived, because of the integrity that many businesses exhibited in the old days.

Don't forget that many political figures also attracted foreign businesses into the country to set up shop, and became their local partners with a seat on the board.

The old Barclays Bank was also present in Nigeria, and had a good structured credit and loans dept, that gave loans to local entrepreneurs, once they had sufficient guarantee of product supply.

These days, local banks ask for an arm and a leg as collateral, and even include your great grandfather's head into the bargain, just because you need a loan. angry

People were more disciplined, honest and transparent in the past, so credit terms were less stringent. undecided

Unlike now, that people can collect goods on credit, and would not pay back but start telling stories, or dodging the owner of the goods.....some even disappear into thin air!

So why haven't the roads been renovated all this while?

I still can't believe that Igbesa to Isashi in Lagos is about 10 minutes, or Igbesa to Igando in Lagos is about 20 minutes drive, if the roads are well constructed. shocked

The govt should embark on a PPP partnership to construct these roads and put a toll gate on them, to enable the private companies recoup their money, like Fashola did with Lekki-Epe expressway toll gates! undecided

Then the Ogun govt should construct well designed markets, commercial centres and massive housing estates along those roads linking up to Lagos state, and see if people would not start flocking in there to trade. There is no better way to kick start development in an area, than by opening up good roads....

The point am trying to make is that most Nigerian business don't have foundation or critical manpower development to bring about sustainable growth. The growth you see most times is dependent on the influence of the owner which is tied to those peculiar factors I mentioned in my post. I know someone that took over his Dad's business but coundn't understand the tricks his Dad plays to get product. If Nigerian business are ran genuinely without corrupt practices you will see business that survive a 100 years. Look out for "CNN 100 club"
Many businesses lack the right critical manpower to bring about development, because their owners hardly recruit the right calibre of experienced personnel, to nurture its' growth to the ñext level. sad

They hardly have a talent development programme or training programme in place, to improve the skills of their staff.

Sometimes, they even recruit staff based on sentiments, nepotism or favouritism. Solid expertise and experience does not come cheap, and some business owners lack the funds to hire well experienced professionals, who can manage their businesses for them.

In cases where they hire such experienced professionals, then such owners often interfere in the daily running of the firm, instead of allowing the professionals to do their job properly. undecided

Even when the business has a solid foundation, if the man's relatives fight to take over the business after his death, and the person who eventually gets it lacks the right skills and expertise to run it properly, will the business not die?

All these local banks and their strange cards that are can fail at any time, while doing cross-border transactions, in a foreign country.

A few years back, GTB's MasterCard issued in Nigeria, was not accepted in Ghana, for their local transactions. Yet they were telling everyone that it was accepted internationally. sad

It took a long while before they could fix the glitches. In the meantime, many of their clients were stranded and embarrassed abroad, due to the poor performance of the card.

UBA too, did the same thing with their cards. Using their cards abroad, was guaranteed to launch the user into international embarrassment. undecided

Now, First Bank has launched a card that is likely to do the same. Many business owners have learnt the hard way, not to rely on locally issued cards for international transactions, no matter how colourful their adverts may be.

Majority of these CEO in Nigeria made their money by getting inflated government contracts, defrauding people, cheating the Nigeria system, laundering money for politicians and finally going diabolic to become invisible so they can enjoy their loot. How many Nigerian private business survive after the exit of the owner. Nigeria is a scam!
Nigerian-owned businesses don't succeed after the death of the founder, because such founders do not put a valid and structured succession plan in place, while they are still alive.

Another thing is that many of them are polygamists, with multiple wives and many children.

After they die, these wives, children and relatives start fighting for a piece of the property that the founder left behind. Before you know it, the business dies as everyone grabs a piece of its' assets, for themselves.

Others go to court and get a lien placed on the property, or raise a caveat against the man's will. The case lingers in court for many years, while the business eventually dies through lack of proper supervision. sad

The reasons are too many. The last one that always upsets me, is that these founders send their kids abroad to study and those kids eventually build their own lives abroad, instead of acquiring skills to come back home and run their father's business. undecided

Some kids even end up being strangers to their fatherland. And parents of such children indulge them, in their foreign pursuits.

By the time such parents who founded the companies die, the kids come back and are out of touch with all their father's built or laboured for, because they were not part of its' growth, in the first place. Those kids have no intention of staying back, and have absolutely no interest in the business. cry

Tell me, how will such businesses then survive?

United States is not Nigeria, if you can't take care of your children properly in the United States child services will give them to foster homes until you're financially able to take care of them again, that's how it works there they have children in their interests, unlike Nigeria where it's oyo lol so what she did is good because that way they can afford what they want without coming to ask for it all the time, and also here in the US you can't work until you're at least 14 yrs old, any age below that is termed child labor
United States is not Nigeria, agreed. undecided But giving my children cash to wash their clothes, or do household chores, is a wrong way to train them to get things done.

Children learn by watching real life examples, of how things are done. If you model the right behaviour for them to follow from a very early age, they would do it, without seeking for a cash incentive.

Not paying kids to do household chores, does NOT mean that their parents are not taking proper care of them. So your analogy is really not valid, here....

Madam, if you teach your children to be content with the little they have and to refrain from developing a greedy nature, then they will not be coming to you to ask for things, all the time....

Contentment is a great virtue.

When this bungalow was still 30 million, nobody bought it. Now you are calling it 45 million, as if it is made of gold. When you are ready to sell, you will fix a reasonable price, not an atmospheric one....

Schooling is not education. It's just a formal process. It's basically a scam these days because its purpose has expired with the internet taking over.

Read. Quit school if you have to. It adds no value to you as a person.

Every parent needs to tell their kids this every day. Your chances of getting educated are higher outside school than in school.

Books are everywhere. If you can read and write, you're very literate. In fact, you'll write books that PhD holders will read with delight.

Educate yourself. Do business. Acquire a skill. Build an empire. Join an empire. Evolve. You're a human being! The society doesn't define you. You define the society.
Only people with small minds and low IQ, think that schooling is a scam. Without education and the knowledge acquired in a formal school, can you make sense of the books on the internet, or can you apply what you read online, to create an impact in the real world?

If the Mike Adenugas and Tony Elumelu's of this world, had abandoned school and discarded education, would they have been able to build the companies they now have on ground?

Just because he won't be eligible for teaching practice. Wetin him wan go teach the students before? I keep saying it, formal education is not meant for everybody. If you can't cope with the stress, go learn a skill or trade and stop wasting precious time in school
Suicide was the totally wrong option. Having 3 carryovers just means he would spend an extra year in school, to study and pass those courses, before being allowed to graduate. undecided

What were the course advisers in his school doing? They should just have educated him on the way out of the whole situation...

It is so sad, really. cry

Is that an excuse to kill himself No matter how unfair life is, suicide is nt the remedy
